I get the chills, every time I take the Z8 out. I waited 3-4 years to buy the latest body, while I built my Z lens collection with the Z6 and Z7. The jump to the Z8 is indescribable- and I feel as if I have only started to figure out what it can do. I shoot both outdoor portraits and live sports and it makes both a joy so far. A huge thank you to Matt for "being our guide" through these past few years into the mirrorless journey. You helped convince me to be patient and not switch to Sony and I'm SO happy I stayed! Cheers, Matt!
After reading your post… I went took my Z8 out of my bag…. Gave it a nice look, felt the contours, the grip and then placed it back in the bag. And yes I got the chills too!!!
Sold all my Sony gear, and got the Z8 and 5 s lenses, LOOOVE IT!! NO REGRETS! I’ve shot everything and tried many systems, and I must say, this is my best camera ever!
@@amermeleitor Why would he? any professional photographer that has tried both systems extensively will tell you that the autofocus performance of the z8 and z9 is very up on par with Sony and canon offerings. While those 2 can edge Nikon AF in a few aspects , overall people that know how to operate their autofocus will still tell you that Nikon AF works perfectly and it does. People grew clinging so much to tech that they dont even learn their gear but are quick to go online and spew shit about Autofocus performance. Its funny because the pros are praising it and yet some youtube wannabes think Nikons AF on the z8 and z9 is miles below that of canon and sony
@@amermeleitor With firmware 2.0 and comparing both cameras I think the autofocus is about the same as the one of an Alpha 1, which is in my opinion pretty good. Yes, the autofocus of the A7rV is "smarter" (finding the eye more quickly and reliably than the Alpha 1 and the Z8), but tracking of Z8 and Alpha 1 is of course a lot better than with the A7rV.
I love my Z8. I picked mine up on the release date as well. I use mine at my church where lighting is a challenge photographing baptism and new members. I have also been using it for travel photography. I am amazed at the level usability. I love your work. I feel like I get a fair report on all the Z cameras and lenses. The "use case" approach you use is very helpful. God bless. Keep these video’s coming.
Yes, loving my Z8. I hadn't intended to get one as i was very happy with my Z9 and my Z7ii, however, a recent dual camera shoot at an airshow, i was frustrated by the 7ii with its different control layout, much slower performance and inferior autofocus so, a few days later, I sold the 7ii and replaced it with a Z8. Now, with the Z8 & Z9 I feel very comfortable with this pair. As I am now within days of turning 74, I think these cameras will see me out!!!!
@@Mike_Ferguson Now within days of turning 75 and the Z9 & Z8 both going strong (I also now have a Nikon F5 for my "Return to Film" project) and love both these cameras. The biggest issue is the weight of the lenses I use for wildlife photography - although light for what they offer, they are still a bit of a load - Z800 PF and Z 180-600!! 😅😅
I just got my z8 at photocon here in my home town in Oklahoma. Traded both my z6 ii and z7 ii and what I have seen so far, I love it. Just a great camera
Hi Matt! As we've discussed at length, the Z8 is a dream camera. If it hadn't been preceded by the Z9 and I hadn't had that experience, I might have said the Z8 was the best camera I've ever owned. Firmware: yes, there's a couple of things from the Z8 I'd like to see transferred to the Z9 -- portrait impression balance and skin softening, for instance; I NEED that! 😀 I do like the lighter weight and size advantage of the Z8 over the Z9, at the cost of battery life and minor overheating (that hasn't interfered at all in real world use). But, as you say, external power is facilitated by the PD USB-C input and is a no-brainer for video. Really, add any of the Z-mount S Series lenses on the Z8 and you have an absolutely top-notch rig. We're lucky fellas!
Having owned the Nikon D750, D850, Z6ii, Z7ii and now the Z8 and Z9, while they are all capable of taking wonderful images, to my mind the Z8 is truly the ultimate all-rounder.
I've had my Z8 for a Month now, and the Mount service is completed. I added a Smallrig cage and left-hand grip, and a top handle. Who cares about weight, this setup on the Z8 makes handling it so easy, I mean it's the best handling Camera I have ever had! Love it! Keep on Killen it Nikon!
I have a Z6II and seriously thinking of getting the Z8 for portrait photography, wildlife, and landscape shots. Thanks for your RUclips work Matt, always informative and beautifully produced.
Also have the Z6ii and recently bought the Z8. Agree this thing is at another level. But still prefer the Z6ii for real low light situations. Basically the Z6ii is now the 2nd camera. Just love the fact that it is all electronic sensor with a sensor shield. One day we will have a global shutter but this is pretty damn close
@@leedoyle1510I was thinking of going that route myself and keeping my Z6II for low light which I shoot more often than not. Glad to know it still has a place even when I upgrade to Z8.
Great video, thanks. I own a Z6ii for almost 3 years but still struggling with focusing sports events and birds in flight. Hopefully the Z8 will solve this neverending issue from Nikon.
Hi Matt, it is clear to me, you are the top specialist for such videos, with heart, soul and deep passion. Please stay with this for more of your spectacular descriptions for photography and video for all of us, always I see this with respect and pleasure. As an owner of a Z8 from the first selling day here in Germany and collecting before a range of glorious Z glasses, I must say this camera is my very best of all forever and I have a life time Nikon experience beginning in the sixties with a Nikon F Photomic. My serial number is affected as well, but no big deal, I had no issues and Nikon is fixing that anyhow. So I believe in Nikon and cannot be happier to report about my impressive use, it is a really unbeatable and unstoppable flagship camera.
Well, difficult indeed?! Most of the time I use the S 24-120 as an allrounder, combined with the S 14-30 and the S 100-400. This combo is my travel kit in a 20 l backpack Zip version from peak design. For some occasions, especially when the light conditions are more important I change or add this with the 1.8 serie 20,35,50 and 85. I had fun also with the Macro 105, what an amazing stuff and the results in quality are awesome!
I have had the Z8 for three weeks now, and agree with your evaluation wholeheartedly! Paired with the 100-400, 85 or 14-30 it is the answer to all my dreams...
My Z8 is on order and I will be part exchanging my Z6 and D500 as the Z8 replaces both. I am looking forward to using it and am reading up on how to use it. These videos are really helpful.
Thoroughly agree with all you have stated Matt, I share your enthusiasm ! I have two Z6's, a Z6ii, and now a Z8. You have inspired me to become solely Z8 completely (maybe the Z6ii as a backup !) Thanks for the direct and dynamic presentation of the Z8 - it is such a special camera, it is my go-to camera, and has been for months now - think I may well need a second one (from Grays !)
Hi Matt - Nice summary of the current status! There is little doubt that Nikon has arrived with the Z8/9 platform. As this tech moves into the lower line up (Z5/6/7/50/70or90? etc.) there will be little logical room to say that Nikon is not at the forefront of photography again, and even more incredibly at the forefront of hybrid video for the first time as well! Now that the bodies have arrived (just a short matter of time for the trickle down), it again comes back to the lenses and the Z mount, which is by all logic due to the shear physics of the mount, the best mount among all brands of interchangeable mirrorless cameras in the market. We have seen that the Z mount has now produced lenses that are simply superior to the competition. A case in point is the 24-120 f/4 S lens which is a mid-level lens designed for both the consumer as well as some professional application - and the Nikon version is simply better than Canon and Sony's (not so equivalent) 24-105 lenses. It beats the RF version hands down in build quality and most importantly IQ (where there is little comparison), and it likewise is better than the Sony - not to mention it does this while at the same time being the only one to reach to 120mm, which is a really nice additional reach over 105. But this lens is not the only story: all of the Nikon 1.8 S lenses are top of class as compared to the competition - same for the 1.2 glass (we should be seeing a third 1.2 lens installment soon), and the same even goes for the low end where the 40mm f/2 literally smokes the RF 50 1.8 - it beats it in build, IQ and in suppressed focus breathing - there really isn't any way in which the Canon lens competes except it is less expensive (you get what you pay for, and the Nikon is still very affordable). There is likewise no Sony 50mm range lens in the 1.8 space that competes with the Nikon 50 1.8S. The list goes on and on - we could mention all of Nikon's vastly superior long range telephoto lenses released last year - there is not one among them that has a significant competitor and so on and so forth. I think this is where the gap will continue to widen toward Nikon's favor - the body issue is largely behind them now, but they will continue to bring out better and better and more and more unique lenses that the others will simply not be able to produce due to their inferior mounts with steeper angles of incidence than the Z mount. Ironically (or not) it was Nikon themselves that pointed to the Z mount in 2018 upon the initial launch and proclaimed that this mount was the reason that their system was special and superior... I guess they actually do know what they are doing!!! lol By the way, I wrote this entire comment not for your benefit as I know full well that you are aware of all of these points, but rather to help your very nice video with the YT algorithm and perhaps more importantly for the benefit of any of your viewers that might not fully (yet) grasp what Nikon has done... and continues to do... and will continue to do into the foreseeable (and perhaps even distant) future. All the best, -PD
Yep the z mount is certainly 'special' 😁 they f'd it up on the Z9 and again on the Z8. Then refuse to say what the exact issue is. They have no choice other than to repair the cameras. It is not as if they are doing anybody any favours. Fanbois will harp on about other manufacturers having recalls, as if this somehow mitigates poor QC from nikon or suggesting we should accept recalls as part of purchasing nikon products. nikon really need to sort out their QC and ensure it does not happen in the future & stop trying to penny -pinch on using plastic chassis in top-end products. A bit more focus on customer relations too. Only 'special' people get access to the PD liveried straps for example & us little people have to go without. A bit more of an apology to Z8 owners. Would it hurt them to enclose an apology letter & maybe a goodwill gesture with each camera they have to recall?
@@wibbley1 Interesting POV. To show that I am not speaking from bias - I do agree with you that QC should be addressed at Nikon - the same can and needs to be said for Canon and Sony, but that does not change the fact that Nikon could stand to improve here. Also, I agree that Nikon is not the strongest in customer relations. It think it is admirable that they go the extra mile to remedy their mistakes by doing free recall repairs (more than some other companies can say), but it is not easy to reach them sometimes and there is a feeling of distance between the customer and the company that I dislike. And yes, it is highly annoying to have the 2 recalls back to back - especially for someone like me that sent it in and right after it got back there was another recall so now it needs to go in again! So yes, this has been an unfortunate situation. That said, there is nothing cheap in the construction of the Z8 - It is very solid; much more so than the Sony A7 line or the Canon R5/6 lines - and yes I have used them all. I suspect that once these hiccups are ironed out that the Z8 will be a more or less bullet proof camera just as the Z9 is and has proven to be - having out performed Sony in arctic conditions for example. No fan boyism - just facts. It is a fact that the Nikons are the most rugged between these brands - if you don't think so, then you have not used them - nor have you compared them. Additionally, nothing you say about the Z mount changes anything in my initial comment. It remains the best mount in the full frame market. This is physics and cannot be denied - any denial is literally the height of fan boyism for another brand. Physics is physics - angle of incidence is real and effects optical design and there is nothing that will change that fact no matter one's inclination and deep desire to prefer something else. Your comment that only 'special' people have access to PD (Peak Design) straps - because that is what Matt was talking about, is also strange and ultimately not the case. PD straps and strap like accessories are quite affordable and are available to everyone. This is not to say that it doesn't matter that the strap lugs on a few Z8's failed (I think there were 6 failures world wide at the time of this writing), because obviously Nikon should have made sure that this was not the case, but it is true that many pros - myself included - rarely (if ever) use straps or when they do they do use straps, they do not attach them to these lugs. Still, if the lugs are there they should work - I'm sure that this will not remain a problem with Z8 - just the first batch and the rest will be perfect. I do understand your frustration if you are in fact a Z8 (or even a Nikon) shooter and not just trying to run Nikon down, but it is important to weight the pros and cons of these cameras against the competition and when doing so there is no doubt that the Z8 is the best camera at its price point and even at a price point far above its price - it easily competes with, and surpasses (in many ways) the Sony A1 which is literally $2500 more than the Z8, so all complaints are relative. The Z8 stands today as the best all around hybrid full frame camera ever made. Canon will have a response with the R5 II and Sony with whatever next A# iteration they make, but today there is no doubt that the Z8 is the top of class when all categories are considered. If Nikon can just take slightly more care to be sure there are less hiccups at launch, they are poised to get their position back as the premier full frame manufacturer. -PD
Matt, that was a great and appreciated commentary on the Nikon Z8 & Z9 - thank you. Would love to have a link to your selected external power bank or at least a brand / model mention & also, the right angle USB-C cable that was used to help save your Z8 camera from overheating. There are just too many marketplace options for these power banks for me to make an informed decision...
Just discovered your channel Matt, love your work and enthusiasm and enjoying going through your back catalogue. I had lost interest in photography the last few years but watching these videos is igniting that spark that I felt when I bought my first camera (Minolta x300) as a 15 year old. I’m about to sell my Nikon d800e and jump into the mirrorless world with a Z8 and 85mm 1.2 now. Feeling inspired and as a fellow melbournian looking forward to rediscovering this city through a lens again. Keep up the wonderful content.
Hi Matt, thanks for the great videos and updates. I am an aviation photographer and I have moved from my D850 to a Z8 as my main camera. I have had it since the beginning of June and taken 12,000+ photos, covering 10 days of various airshows and events. The Aircraft 3D tracking is excellent, moving to focus on the cockpit, whenever it can see it. My keeper rate has definitely improved due to sharp focus points. Battery life is not good (compared to the D850), but I have several EN-EL15C spares. I wasn't sure that the Z8 would be a major step up from the D850, but I can confirm that it is. I am using my F mount lenses (80-400mm and 200-500mm) with the FTZII with no issues and I would say even sharper results. I have the 180-600mm on order and I can't wait to pair them. Like you, I have a recall serial number but no mounting issues and I don't use the lugs with big lenses. Keep up the excellent channel, even though you are costing me a lot ;)
Your words are music to me..I love aviation pics and tomorrow I will receive mine..I will continue use my 200-500 for sometime and jump to 180-600in the future..any specific settings with this cam for Airshow ??
They work well because the Z8 is a Mini-Me of the Z9, as you point out lack of grip, GPS, and tiny battery are key compromises. But I agree especially for Videographers its the go to as you will need to spend the extra $$ on external batteries and rig setup. Keep up the great content, and love looking at your locations, some great inspiration there in my home town.
I got my Z8 2 months ago and I love it. I had a D750 which I also loved at the time, but Z8 is a signficant jump in abilities and speed. I also had no issues with 2 recall issues on my Z8 so far. I am still using my old F lenses with F2Z adapter and all is fine. My favorite lenses are holly trinity and 200-500. Thank you Matt for your great insightful videos ✌️
I jumped from the Z6 to the Z8 and I am so happy I waited! I do a ton of photos but my main use is going to be for making feature films and the internal RAW is amazing! Currently my favorite lens to shoot with on it is my 50mm 1.2 but that will probably change when they release the 35mm 1.2
I picked my Z8 on launch day, the first day of a 6 wee trip in Yellowstone National Park. I already had the Z9 and Z7, but the Z8 was the perfect complement to the Z9. I kept a different telephoto lens on each (one 800mm, one 400mm). It was great to be able to pick up either without having to think about different button layout or capability. The Z8 is essentially a Z9 without the extra weight and vertical group. I don't regret having a Z9, it is still the first camera I will pick up, but the Z8 is what I will use up if I'm trying to save space or weight such as hiking in the backcountry.
Mine is amazing but I think it’s fair to say that it’s had a few teething problems. I’m looking forward to getting it back from its second repair holiday, but I have to say that the way Nikon has been dealing with it has been respectful and comforting. Thinking about going down to the shop today and picking up a 105 macro.
Love your video's. So far my experience with the Z8 has been spotty. As my first Mirrorless i found the transition, especially in focusing, quite the transition. The FTZII adaptor and use of F mount glass works on some not on others. 2 recalls has meant way too long downtime at the Nikon repair facility. To be fair the mount issue was done quickly ,my F Mount FTZ experience not good. Nikon says it was my 200-500 that was at fault. The lens works just fine on the D850 but not on the Z8.FTZII set up. Been over a month in repair, over a week after finish repair and waiting for a label to be printed and given to the carrier. In it's self the repair woes are a little separate from the Z8 as a camera, but very much an issue given the trips to the repair facility being needed.
I'm a Fuji user but the other way: GFX100S Medium Format. I bought a Z8 and it's an absolutely astonishing photography tool. Makes the Medium Format feel ponderously slow and clunky. OK 102Mp and the brilliant Fuji lenses help the resolution and dynamic range advantages of the bigger sensor but I'd say probably 3/4 of the time when i have both cameras with me, the Z8 comes out first. And if i could only take one with me, its a no brainer. Probably the best all round camera I've ever used.
My service advisories were both handled well. Courier rocked up at the door to collect the camera and it was returned to me within a week. Just had to make the booking online at Nikon. Well done.
Hello Matt, Yes the Z8 is a very good camera. I do think one of its strongest point is the Z glass. Yes having both the Z9 and Z8 just work so well. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy life.
I owned a z9. It certainly was loaded with features that made it the best camera I ever owned. However, it was a tank to lug around in the field. And, so many features were never utilized since I don’t shoot videos. So, away went the z9 and I purchased a z6ii. Sure, autofocus is now a challenge, but for 1/3 the price, I’ll accept that challenge and I still obtain some high quality results. Paired with the z20mm f/1.8 lens, astrophotography is amazing. So for the same cost of the z9, you can purchase a z6ii, a z20mm lens and a z100-400 lens! And like I said, results are extremely acceptable when shooting stills. I’m waiting for the next generation of Nikon cameras to see if there will be an improved z6iii.
It seems delightful but after investing in the z6ii only 2 years ago it feels insane to invest so much so soon. Especially with the specter of the Zf and Z6iii hanging in the air, idk. The idea of an even heavier camera (900g vs 700g roughly) is a hard pill to swallow. Especially with how much I enjoy shooting on the very light zfc
I have an even older camera - a D750 which is great (and lots of pro lens). The thing is you *don't* have to have more expensive gear. I could probably take some really great shots with my ancient D70 and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. New equipment is great if you really are pushing the limits like high speed sports in low light with a minimum of 1/1000 second or a concert in very low light or any other fast paced pro work where you need to get the shot. But often people who are not doing any of that kind of work feel left behind by new feature packed cameras. You're not! The best shots come from the photographer, not the camera.
I’ve had the Z8 and I love it. I use it on my professional work. Although I still grab my Z6II for personal walk around. I’ve grown to really love that body and can’t wait to get the mark III. Probably up to it to the Z7III because I do love the extra megapixels
Nothing is the ultimate all rounder. It’s what we have today and will only get better from here. It’s not like Nikon is going to stop. We will get the same expeed processor in the z6iii and z7iii next year. Then we’ll get something better the following year. The best part of everything Nikon is doing is not turning their backs on the loyal base and continuing to put out firmware and enticing users to upgrade to the latest and greatest. The z8 is an amazing platform but it’s still about the user. In the right hands you can create art.
Hi Matt, Kenny here 😁 uggg I have always been a Nikon buff 40+ years now but my last Nikon was a D80 and I absolutely love her 😍 in the very near future ( 1 to 2 months ) I’ll be able to upgrade to either the Nikon D850 with four great lenses or a Nikon Z8/9 with one lens… which one should I go for ? I know it’s a tough question but I need honest advise please 🙏 I’m mostly into wildlife photography with the occasional motorsports and happy snaps of my grandchildren and dogs oh and aviation 😁 we have two WWII Spitfires flying by our house every day ( I know lucky buggers eh 🤩 ) I live on disability pension so money is extremely tight for us but I’m looking at this being my last camera so… what would you’re recommendations be please and listen thank you for all the videos you do for us and the advice you give us, outstanding, your enthusiasm is heartwarming sir and I truly wish you every success for the future, thanks again, Kenny 😊🙏👍👍👍
Happy with my Z8. Just got back from a two-week trip to Iceland with it. Had to sent it back to Nikon after the trip tp take care of the recall. But, absolutely amazing camera!
What would be awesome is a full rundown on the menu bank settings, how to add items and make different "banks". Still havn't figured it out even after watching numerous videos.
Matt, I was hoping you can guide me on the below question. My D750 is giving me multi-fold sharper pictures on 50mm 1.8 and 24-120 1.4 lenses compared to Z8 with the same lenses. Thoughts on what I could be doing wrong?
Hi Matt. I am a staunch viewer of your videos. I have had a Nikon Z7 since its launch and over the years i have learned to work around the autofocusing. This was not the issue prior to the mirrorless. I want to ask which camera would you recommend between Nikon Z7ii or Z8 if i want to upgrade? Z8 would be the max of my budget. I just don't wish to deal with the same issue of autofocussing of the Z7. Does the Z7ii have the AI chip or just the Z8? Is the Z7ii that much better or just a ted better. My work is events/ headshots with occassional sports and a lot of leisure.
Matt always makes positive videos that are uplifting to watch 🥰 If i'm just too Happy, i'll go watch Jarrod and sink into a depresion, balances out the week
All this at a really competitive price, with the Sony A1 at a whopping £5,879, the A9 II at £3,999 and the A7 V at £3,999 and the Canon R3 at £5,659 and the R5 at £4,299 (UK Prices), the Z8 more than holds its own in the market. Some have better this or that, but none have the whole package that the Z8 does.
Product segmentation via firmware is fine... just as long as they bring any autofocus improvements to both cameras (and any future Expeed 7 cameras down the the product stack). That's been Nikon's Achilles heal for years now, and they're still a bit behind Canon and Sony. I think they need to do everything they can to make that public perception a thing of the past, and the best way to do that would just be to put top of the line AF performance on all their cameras.
Very nice job going over this camera! I very much appreciate your perspective. Am an owner of a D850 and a Z6. Am researching the viability and possible benefit of getting a Z8. Still a lot of questions. It took me a week to find information on cfexpress record times in 4.1K N-raw, 24fps high quality. With your help and the help of others, I'm getting closer to a decision.
The Nikon D850 will always be the best digital SLR ever made, that being said Z8 blows the D850 out the water, Matt you are right it's currently the best all rounder out there today and I expect it to be there for a long time. My wife and I have had our Nikon Z8 for three months now, we are so impressed with the colour rendition and the detail you can get out of that Nikon Z8 It is mind blowing, In post processing we can crop 200% and still keep razor sharp detail, we purchased two Peargear 512gb CF Express be cards after watching your video, which gives us about 10,000 frames I don't think we need to worry about the second card slot, but we do have an SD card in there just for back up. As for battery life we shoot about 1000 frames per battery on average.
Nikon were jeered by so many youtube brigade of Canon and Sony cheerleaders but it appears the Nikon is having the last laugh with the quality of the new Z mount cameras and lenses.
Great video Matt and you point out the essential fact; Nikon takes care of the lugs and it does not take anything away from the camaera as a tool. Noone misses a shoot because of the lugsd and everybody knows that there are ways around if, if youi need to carry them. Good on you for defending Nikon, when so many try to trash them for no good rerason.
So far so good w/ Z8 and both recalls, almost killed a commercial project. Functions so good, jpeg output already useable, still got many functionalites undiscovered...anyway flaws don't shade its well.
Wait, what's that, beep....beep...beep - the nikon money truck backing up 🤣 I agree with Matt's words, Z8 is a fantastic camera, electronic shutter is a game changer, no longer worried about mechanical stress shooting at a zillion fps. However, the heating issues should not be there. nikon should have leaned from all the fuss with other brands that cooked. Buying a chunky camera, weight is a secondary concern, so the few grams saved in using half plastic chassis? More like they could save a few yen. Should have been all metal and this extended to the outside, possibly using the base as a heatsink, either with built in fins, or optional bolt on for video use. Recalls, well yes, nikon are repairing the two recalls. Again neither should have happened with proper QC. Having a camera taken apart to be fixed really takes the shine of the product for many users. Not every region has multiple service centres, in the uk, nikon closed the only one, down. Repairs go to central europe (although it seems they are now using a tv repair company in the uk, for the recall work). nikon refuse to tell us exactly what they do for the recall work. Why? I'm sure the competitors have already pulled a Z8 apart for a look-see. If a production worker failed to put a blob of thread-lock on the lug cross-pin, why not just tell us? After the huge wait lists for the D850, and my jump to mirrorless being the Z8, I made sure to be on the day one release list. Have learned my lesson. Waiting five years to go mirrorless, wait a few more months to see how the product performs in the real world. Will not be rushing to buy the Df or 180-600. nikon have a huge dent in their reputation. Now known for 2 recalls in two months of their flagship(ish) camera. Whilst they are repairing the cameras (they have no choice, not as if they are doing anybody a favour) refusal to state the issue and offering no goodwill gesture towards the loyal Z8 customers is not good for customer loyalty or reputation.
Lol. Sorry are you getting a money truck? Ain’t no truck here. Recalls happen. The hand wringing to generate drama is more what this feels like. Overheating. So you shoot a lot of 8k for 60+minutes? Again feels like you are mining for drama. If it is a problem for you what is your usecase? The body is a composite carbon fibre nanotube construction. So you can come back to me on whether that is more robust or less. What goodwill gesture are you looking for? Sticker? Strap. Are you serious? I’d be far more concerned that Sony for example makes cameras and is not interested in firmware and an R1 might come more than 3 years after A1 and Z9. Can’t Canon make a flagship? Does Sony not support their customers after purchase. But hey keep trying to dig that drama out of somewhere.
Brilliant video. Well done. Plenty of useful solid info, I need one of these cameras in my life but I will not part with my D850. I have a question could you do something on dynamic range and explain to me the does and don’ts to achieve the best results. Thanks.
Matt, Great video, thank you. I have been holding off on going mirrorless and holding on to my D850 but NOW I am seriously thinking that when availability becomes easier it will be time to trade in my D850 for a Z8...
@@MattIrwinPhotography Currently I do Automotive for Fuelfed FTL social media pages, landscape and bird photography for myself. My D850 is hard to beat for the first two, however, for the bird photography, I think the Z8 with the 180-600 would be an upgrade from my D850 and 200-500. What do you think?
Mathew, I got misty when I first picked up the Z8. It felt and handled so familiar. The Z7ii didnt do that for me. A lot of memories are going to be created with this bloody camera.
I own the 200mm f2.0 AFS VR, and had it from new. To be able to purchase this beautiful Plena lens means it has to go. I’m undecided, can it really be as good? What do you think Matt? TonyH
Matt, on the Z8, could you go into more depth on rolling shutter? I shoot a lot of aviation photography particularly helicopters and am worried that the rotor blades will be distorted and other rolling shutter concerns.
A lot of people adapted old Nikkor AiS glass to Sony for cinema use, now you can just put it on an FtZ and pop it on a modern Nikon and get the same cinematic look.
Hi Matt, congrats for the video! I would like to know which app did you use to connect the phone to the Nikon and what accessories are needed. Thank you!
Matt, I appreciate your enthusiasm about the Z8 and Z9. Nikon has done a great job in developing these cameras. But don't forget, that state of the art in camera design is primarily dictated by the state of art in sensor technology. Nikon was smart enough to continue purchasing SONY sensors after 2019, when SONY decided to create Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corp. as a fully independent Company. This allowed them to deal with any Company, that is interested in their sensors, independent of SONY's camera division. This is a win-win situation, that allowed Nikon to get ahead of Canon and rival SONY's own camera division. I wouldn't be surprised, if Canon decides to chose SONY sensors for their high end cameras, as they did in the past for some of their lower end cameras. Having just 1% of the imaging sensor market and a declining R&D budget vs. SONY's 50% market share and 1 Billon $ R&D budget, it would make sense. Choosing a high end camera system is usually for the long term. As of today, you can't go wrong with either SONY or Nikon. With Canon, I am not so sure.
Planning to buy the z8. I'm very interested in landscapes but also capturing night sky and milky way shots. Wildlife is also something i plan to venture into in more depth and this camera seems to have the versatility for all of those things. What do you think about the lens they are selling with it? Any thoughts on using this for night sky/time lapse stuff?
Have you noticed that, even though they are the same sensor, the images from the Z8 and Z9 are just a little different? It is a little annoying as syncing settings across a bunch of images taken with the two cameras is not possible.
Great video as always Matt, only worsens my impatience, now 5 weeks since I ordered mine, thanks to the strap lug fiasco, wondering when I will ever get it
I want to buy one but it’s out of my budget at the moment. My lens purchasing is also on hold, even the 170 to 600 which I would love to get, because there’s no replacement for my nearly 5-year-old z6, and the z6ii, which will be 3 years old is not enough of an improvement now. The rumors seem it suggests the next camera will be a ZF which I think will be a scaled-down version of the z6ii as it doesn’t make sense for the retro camera will be more powerful than the current model.
"The Best" camera is a bit subjective, and I'm sure this was the intent with this video. Yes, the Z8 is a good all-around camera, but I wouldn't call it the best. It's perhaps the "best" semi-pro camera in the Nikon system, but it' s really about on par with the Canon R5/R5C and Sony A7R IV/V. But really, any of those cameras are good cameras, and really, if you pick up a camera from any of the mfrs (including OM Systems or Fuji) you're getting a good camera. It will primariy then come down to features that you need/want. That being said, I did go for the Z8 and can safely say that it will be a long time before I buy another body, as it ticks almost all of the checkboxes for me. The Z9 is a step up, but for me being an enthusiast, I felt that it was a bit more than I wanted to spend, and I'm personally not a fan of built-in grips, and I almost gave in and bought one but am glad I waited and got the Z8 (which replaces my Z6 II which I sold). Now with a Z5 (for low-light), a Z7 II and a Z8, I think I'm set for camera bodies for at least the next 5+ years (with the Z7 II being my landscape and portrait/people photography camera due to its size and weight), the Z5 is my low-light camera, and the Z8 is my "do everything" camera. Now it's focusing on trips, experiences, and photographic opportunities (and a few lenses perhaps mixed in, but I'm done with camera bodies for a while).
'but it' s really about on par with the Canon R5/R5C and Sony A7R IV/V' I'm sorry to say I have used both the A7 IV and A7RV, and there is nothing on par with either of those cameras. one is 33MP with a slow sensor and can't shoot 8K or 20 FPS RAW, and the other is 61MP with a slow sensor much slower FPS. Both don't have a sensor shield, firmware support will be nowhere near the same as Z8, and this is where the list of differences begins. Canon R5C might come close, but has a massive exhaust fan, so it does not over heat, which makes it larger, chew batteries, and not weather sealed, and the fan makes it ergonomically not ideal for in the field photography. Plus it runs seperate operating systems, one for video and one for stills, which means it takes a 8 seconds to switch, the Z8 is something like 1 second to switch. None of these cameras have shutters dedicated to protecting the sensor. Canon only ships HDMI micro ports, not fulled sized. These ports are much more fragile. Sure any assessment like this is ultimately use case oriented. But only one of your suggested cameras comes close the the Z8. In Sony land the closest is the A1.
@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, have to agree with you, Matty. In hindsight, now that the R5ii has been released, it will be the closest competitor to the Z8. Z8 will be my pick for landscape, architecture and portraiture, whilst the raw pre-capture of the R5ii might have it ahead for wildlife and action. Again, there still is the matter of the buffer-size then, as the R5ii can probably do just over 3 seconds (93frames) at 30fps, whilst the Z8 can do over a thousand shots at 20fps. Just wishing for a raw pre-capture for my z8/Z9 bodies. Do you know if Nikon will eventually add this raw pre-capture to these bodies? I have seen rumours of a substantial FW upgrade for the Z9 coming, probably for better AF and hopefully raw pre-capture support for the Olympics? Any idea?
My camera fell into the range for the mount recall and decided to do a wait and see. Just before my trip the lug recall happened but took it on my vacation anyway - using the lugs - hiking and lumping it around the north shore of Lake Superior and etc. Got home and confirmed it was on the lug recall too. Oiy! Waited a bit but decided to send it in since I have a dead space in my schedule (with a Z9 to act as the fill in camera - who uses a Z9 as a backup camera?!). Just the other day Nikon said it was time to ship it, yesterday received confirmation they had got it so I expect it to be back early next week. Since you have several pro bodies I'd recommend getting them taken care of (say one at a time) because you just don't know when the time will come and you'll need to do something outside your typical use case. If the work has been done then you have cheap insurance you don't have to worry about it. If I had not bought the Z9 first (waiting for the mythical Z8 to come out) I would not have bought it after the Z8. Only keeping the Z9 (for now) for it's wonderful battery life and to have an excellent backup camera to the Z8. The Z9 is so much over kill for me it's not funny. :)
These are indeed amazing machines. I'm saving up for a Z9 as the Z8 is priced very closely to it in my region that it makes more sense to get the former.
Hi Matt , great video! I know there isnt any information out there but from your opinion, do you think Nikon will release a Z7iii eventually or do you think they will drop that model? I was going to buy a z7ii but it would make me sad to find out a few months later that nikon is planning to release a z7iii. I do landscape mostly so I dont really need a z8
one thing im noting so far when people are talking about coming cameramodels 'simpler' than z9/z8 the question 'will it have 8k?'.... is it just me, or wouldnt it be possible to provide 6k (given at least a 24mp sensor)? it would be more than 'only' 4k but wouldnt compete as much with z8/z9 video specs?
Hi Matt, I am a great fan of you. I like to purchase Z8 in the coming month. For the lens I have 50mm prime already and I like to go for 24-120mm Z lens.Whether this shall be my right choice. Pl let me know
great info thanks !! one question though why did u film with the sun (light source) behind you ? in the process of selling all my old dslr's to get the Z8 the first nikon mirrorless i would buy and man its been a long wait !!
I do weddings with the Z8. With the Z glass the photos are astounding. Couple of comments. The raw photos are not reading in any editing software I have(Not Adobe,Affinity,Luminar,Photoworks). Animal AF didn't recognize horses. Video mode has no exposure meter(How to turn this on).
The argument that 'SD cards are easily available just in case' really doesn't make sense to me. I'm hard pressed to think of a situation where you would 'forget' to bring a CF or have a backup for your 4k camera in the incredibly unlikely case of a failure and CF type B has been around for a bit and many of the big box electronic stores will carry them as well (Best Buy, Target, Was Mart). The reason why the Z8 has an SD slot is to differentiate from the Z9.
Hi there, i am using the vb 50 from smallrig to power on the z8. even with external power supply it gets overheated, i think its the warm climet In Greece. So, in my mind i have 2 questions. First, does the external battery powers on directly the camera or it goes throught the Enl15 first? And second if it goes throught the enl15 it means it is charging the camera and also powering on the camera so in this case you are building extra heat inside the camera from charging and powering on the camera, so the obvious work around would be to use a dummy battery. My next logical step was to search for one but i had no lack finding an approved one. I have tried to communicate with nikon in Greece about dummy battery but there responce was like 'do we even sell cameras?'
Cheers JB. Means a lot

Sold all my Sony gear, and got the Z8 and 5 s lenses, LOOOVE IT!! NO REGRETS! I’ve shot everything and tried many systems, and I must say, this is my best camera ever!
Don't you miss Sony autofocus?
Oh lord!!! You guys aremaming me full the trigger to buy Z8 THIS WEEK! Give me a sign!!!!!
😢😢😢
But nice cameras ❤
You were doing good until the "See me out!" Part! I'm 76😅
Definitely! D7100 --> D7500 --> Z6 --> Z8 a natural generalist progression. And the Z8 with the superlative Z glass ... wonderful
Totally agree
Mine is D3300-5200-7500 and tomorrow I will be adding Z8 to this…😀..it reached warehouse and tomorrow I can collect it❤
I just got my z8 at photocon here in my home town in Oklahoma.
I do like the lighter weight and size advantage of the Z8 over the Z9, at the cost of battery life and minor overheating (that hasn't interfered at all in real world use).
Cheers Mike, the Z6 II is a wonderful camera, but the Z8 is on another level all together. :)
Matt! You're making me pull the trigger to buy the Z8 now!!!oh my goshhhhhh... Give me a sign! 😊❤
Hi Elle, what are you most wanting to capture with the Z8?
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hi Matt! Astrophotography, Landscape and Wildlife!
Great video, thanks. I own a Z6ii for almost 3 years but still struggling with focusing sports events and birds in flight. Hopefully the Z8 will solve this neverending issue from Nikon.
Autofocus is overrated for r6 II. Maybe its just me but i got more usable photos with Z6II compared to R6 II
Invest in Z lens. It seems its faster to focus compared to F mount
Hi Matt,
it is clear to me, you are the top specialist for such videos, with heart, soul and deep passion.
Thank you Klaus. What a journey you have had with Nikon. What Z lenses do you enjoy the most? Cheers Matt
I just upgraded from my Z6 and bought a Z8 today which I should get in 3-4 weeks and cannot wait!
Happy with it? 😊
You have inspired me to become solely Z8 completely (maybe the Z6ii as a backup !)
Thanks for the direct and dynamic presentation of the Z8 - it is such a special camera, it is my go-to camera, and has been for months now - think I may well need a second one (from Grays !)
I guess they actually do know what they are doing!!! lol
By the way, I wrote this entire comment not for your benefit as I know full well that you are aware of all of these points, but rather to help your very nice video with the YT algorithm and perhaps more importantly for the benefit of any of your viewers that might not fully (yet) grasp what Nikon has done... and continues to do... and will continue to do into the foreseeable (and perhaps even distant) future.
All the best,
-PD
Cheers PD, great comment and thanks for your thoughts and input :)

I hope your right Matt as I got rid of my gear and just ordered the Z8 😊
Loving my Z8! All I need now is for Nikon to announce that 35-150mm f/2-2.8 😁
You summed everything up perfectly, Nikon powa!
Totally agree
Z8 owner. Happy camper! Upgraded from Z6II. Bought R6II and sold it. I did not like the canon
Love using my z8. Z7ii is always left at home now because it feels so sluggish. Z8 is a massive upgrade in many areas
Well done Matt, Nikon keeps cranking out the good stuff !!!!
Matt always makes positive videos that are uplifting to watch 🥰 If i'm just too Happy, i'll go watch Jarrod and sink into a depresion, balances out the week
😂
Great info...has me drooling for one :)...Esp since I can adapt my Sony lenses....awesome..
Was using my D800 for 10 years. Got my Z6ii a year and a few months ago. I want a Z8 now that all the teething issues have been settled.
Love the Z8! It’s a fabulous camera!
So far so good w/ Z8 and both recalls, almost killed a commercial project. Functions so good, jpeg output already useable, still got many functionalites undiscovered...anyway flaws don't shade its well.
Wait, what's that, beep....beep...beep - the nikon money truck backing up 🤣
I agree with Matt's words, Z8 is a fantastic camera, electronic shutter is a game changer, no longer worried about mechanical stress shooting at a zillion fps.
Thanks.
Waited for the right time and finally picked one up at the EOFY sale for less than $6k AUD (plus a 24-120 F4 S)
Matt, Thank you for this video… I would like to ask what cage you use on the Z8 and what external battery you use for videoing… many thanks… S
Hello Matt , I just love may Z8 , sold al may Canon . And så happy
Matt, Great video, thank you. I have been holding off on going mirrorless and holding on to my D850 but NOW I am seriously thinking that when availability becomes easier it will be time to trade in my D850 for a Z8...
For sure Leo, it is all about your use case and I suppose if there are any Z lenses you are interested in :) Let us know how you go :)
I now want the Z8 even more currently on the Z6 which suits my needs well. I probably loan the Z8 and try it.
What battery pack are you using with your Z8? Thanks.
I shoot a lot of aviation photography particularly helicopters and am worried that the rotor blades will be distorted and other rolling shutter concerns.
it is nominated as the camera of the year
here in Switzerland the z9 is just CHF400 more expensive than the z8, which one would you choose?
Like that skateboard area in the background been there couple times and kids are cool with others taking pics
Thank you!
Très content de mon Z8 en complément de mon Z9. Merci Nikon !
I am trading my Lumix S5 and all of my lenses and buying a nikon z8 tomorrow.
Agreed - good job Matt
Have you noticed that, even though they are the same sensor, the images from the Z8 and Z9 are just a little different? It is a little annoying as syncing settings across a bunch of images taken with the two cameras is not possible.
Is the Z8 better in low light than my Z6?
Wow the details of some of those shots look almost as good as my D800 (which has a flash and Z8 doesn't).
Any idea?
Can seem to find the 8K 10bit setup in the menu.
I can only agree 👏👏nice ending and I love the cut at 5’38(so would my Dad 😉)
Fantastic. I can’t wait to hear how you go. 😀
GOOD~~~!!!
agreed, Z8 is a winner
Pl let me know
Just bought me a Nikon D700!
great info thanks !! one question though why did u film with the sun (light source) behind you ? in the process of selling all my old dslr's to get the Z8 the first nikon mirrorless i would buy and man its been a long wait !!
The reason why the Z8 has an SD slot is to differentiate from the Z9.
has definitely happened to me and I'm quite OCD
Thank you so much for Important and Informative beautiful review !!!👌👍
My pleasure 😊
Hi Matt can you please do a settings setup video for the Z8!!!!!
How many shots are you getting in normal shooting mode (all still no video) using EVF only?
