A few things to add... The World's Strongest Man used a very different scoring system in the 70's where only the top 4 athletes in an event would score points, so we've had to exclude those competitions from this list. We also corrected the scoring in years where the final event was worth double points for a fairer comparison.
This was a fun list! I wonder how much this list would have changed if we went by total points earned for the win (since there are a few finals where the top 3 were so far ahead of everyone else, meaning those spots were tight), but I also recognize that some finals have more events/total points than others.
Unofficial honorable mention to Magnus Samuelsson in 98? He was only 6 ahead of Jouko, but his 73/80 points has to be one of the only times someone got over 90% of total possible points!

I would love to see a top 10 with the best overall placing per event. With the different amount of points per year, this doesn't tell you who was the best. Like your video title, it shows you who was most dominant based on points. Like chamcellorruseell5946 said a percentage of possible points rate system would be great. Or if someone got 3 events first and 3 events second, they would have a 1.5 rating. Some years were dominated due to very inconsistent competitors. It would be awesome to see who was consistently on top and not who got points when it mattered. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.
I think scoring should still reward more winners and maybe whole top 3 in events.

Mariusz was the most dominant and he had the super hero body that we all wanted. He doesn't get the credit he deserves because of the controversial splitting of the athletes back then...but he was the best in the world at the time. If it wasn't for Mariusz being so strong...we wouldn't have Big Z.
See u have partly answered my question.. I always find it so strange how little I hear him talked about.. I mean with how he competed, his wins and how he kinda progressed the sport with his speed, I would expect him to be talked about all the time in commentary!
@@bruceMooseman this is partially becauase since 2009, when he end his carear, the sport grow very much, especially in Britain and U.S.A. Also Mariusz is absolutely top 3 for me of all time, but then you have Brian and Big Z who dominated the next era, after Mariusz and many People started following strongman during that time. And to be fair - 2005 -2007 era of WSM was indeed one of the weekest in the history and People are not referring that much to this period, when Mariusz got his 2 titles and second place. Since 2008 it started to be much more interesting, because of the guys like Poundstone, Ortmayer stepping in and also peak Ostlund and couple other great strongman. But remember 2009 WSM final was fantastic, there were no split anymore between federations, All the best athletes in the one place, and Mariusz end up at second place in front of Brian and just behind peak Zydrunas. And from my research, no doubt, he was not in the best shape and still he got strong second, won an event and was dangerous through the whole competing...amazing athlete, we can just Wonder what it could be if the split with IFSA never happened...
@@kostkaguitar cheers pal 👍 great reply and makes a lot of sense, I just think people seem to overlook how much he played a part in strongman and the new 'speed era' don't get me wrong there were amazing and explosive guys before him but the stuff he did really dragged strongman forward in my opinion. People also seem to overlook how he got good at even things he was weak at the attention to detail that on my opinion a lot of even elite guys seemed to miss, he brought the 'lets be clever and fast' into the sport rather than just whatever you where naturally good at. Anyway it just baffles me and it always will that he doesn't come up in wsm commentary more, I mean a lot of those guys were around when he was smashing it.. it seems like they are deliberately ignoring him in my opinion.
@@bruceMooseman for me he is TOP 3 right now of all time, probably still behind Brian and Zydrunas, but he dominated 8 years in strongman history and it is not his fault that the split between WSM and IFSA happened..."You can win only with the guys in front of you" - this is what Loz like to tell often and it perfectly fit in the Mariusz case. 😉 Maybe 2005 to 2008 he was not competing against everybody (because he could' t, except Arnolds), but we need to remember that he was absolutely the best Strongman in the 2002-2004 era and don t anybody even try to convince me that it is not true 😄 (I can underdstnd slight argument for Zydrunas, because of the Arnolds). He is 5 time WSM champion, 6 time Europe Strongest Man champion, he won multiple different shows all over the world and he beat every single athlete that he was able to compete against in at least a couple of shows 😉. And he has the most dominate performance in WSM history as well, like we just watched 😁.
Mariusz is the greatest of all time on my list. Not just because of his accomplishments and dominance, but because of his impact on my life. He was just coming into his reign at the top when i became a fan. My grandfather (R.I.P) was switching between channels and he told me to come sit down and watch WSM with him. I had no idea my life would change from that day on.
I was a teenage bodybuilding fan. Up until that point i had no interest in WSM. I looked at guys like Arnold, Haney and Zane as peak physiques. I was young and ignorant. I thought strongman was all about giants with beer bellies lifting heavy stuff. Then i saw Mariusz! Not only was he huge, vascular and lean like my heroes, he was also incredibly competitive, powerful, agile and explosive. He bridged the gap between the two different realms for me at such a young impressionable age. I've gone on to become a super fan of the sport, and love many of the strongman competitors of the last 20 years. But, i owe the entirety of my love for the sport to just one competitor.. Mariusz Pudzianowski.
Mariusz was very special, his explosive power was unique.

Haha 52 is only young I peaked in strength at 55, heading for 57 now and picking up strength again, bumped into a massive guy who had a physique like Samuelsson, unbelievably in great shape he was 72, totally insipiring
These comments bode well for me at nearly 42 deciding to have a crack at training for and competing in masters powerlifting in the next few years.
@@paulharper4196 go 4 it I could never train real heavy weights until 3 yrs ago as I was in the army 30yrs and it was nearly all fitness I'm retired now and I think it does make a huge difference if you're not working because you do a long day at work then go to gym it's hard to stay motivated

I feel like Pudzian is somewhat underrated among strongman fans. Yes, he won a few easier comps during the IFSA split but his most dominant win came before it.
I agree that 2005 wsm, he had a slightly easier win (having said that, none of the opposition were slouches) and Mariusz had a few injuries so he wasn’t fresh.
Where it gets harder to call if mariusz would have won or lost if there wasn’t a split is 2007 and 2008.
In 2007 (split ended later that year), mariusz was fresh and dominated top level strongman like terry hollands and Phil pfister (who used to compete in IFSA).
In 2008, he tore his calf and derek poundstone was dominating. He would later go on to win the Arnold classic 2009-2010. Mariusz still pipped him at wsm 2008.
It’s a shame that we’ll never truly know.
I totally agree that he is underrated, and I think the arguement that he had some easier comps is kinda redundant as over a strongman career most competitors will have some easier ones, all the greats will have had some easier competitions, where some guys are injured etc it's just the name of the game, if u look at all his results he's won a crazy amount and against some greats as well

One thing that really irks me about the IFSA years argument is that Marius had already beaten both of the IFSA champs and every competitor in the top five for all three years of IFSA at WSM at some point with the exception of Misha Koklyaev.
Another thing no one who talks down about Marius' 5 wins tends to mention is that the 2nd place competitor he was 20 points up on in 2003 was Big Z and 23 points up on Vasyl Virastyuk. Both of the IFSA champs.
Vasyl's win over Marius in 2004 was more endurance than anything given the one off format they had that year which was the one and only time Virastyuk placed over Marius Pudzianowski at WSM.
Pudzianowski came first or second in nine out of eleven events in that qualifier and came third in the final where he, like everyone else, was burnt out and still came first or second in half of the events, winning two and placing second in two events. Both Vasyl and Big Z won two and placed second in only one event but maintained higher placings over all in the eight event final.
It was a good win, don't get me wrong, but it's not like they whooped Pudzian's ass or anything.
Had it had been a standard 13 event format Marius would probably have 6 titles.
Worth mentioning as well is that it's a shame Magnus Samuelsson was so lousy at Deadlift and Squat or that could have easily been his second title.

And I don't just mean fans of him .. because everyone has a right to like who they want.. there are many reasons why I'm a fan of him not just his stats etc.the reason why I ask this is I barely hear his name mentioned in a official setting (commentary etc) in fact he is featured in loz's videos more than anywhere else on my opinion.

The Marius 5 Wins / IFSA split debate is definitely still a hot topic and has to be my biggest pet peev in the entire history of WSM. Let me attempt to put that to rest.
Marius Pudzianowski beat the entire top five of all three years of IFSA's World Championship with the exception of Misha Koklyaev, who didn't compete at World's until 2010.
The most dominant performance on this list is his win from 2003 where the 2nd and 3rd place contestants he beat by 20 and 23 points respectively were Big Z and Vasyl Virastyuk; the two winners of IFSA World Championship.
He beat Z first in the 2000 WSM Heat 5 for a place in the Final (which is fantastic and you should watch it if you haven't) and beat him in both the 2002 and 2003 Finals. He beat Vasyl Virastyuk in 2002, Raimonds Bergmanis in 2002, 2003, and 2004 and placed above Andrus Muruments in 2004 by a 15 point margin. He beat Derek Poundstone in 2008 and 2009. Vidas Blekaitis never made it to the finals in 2003. That's everybody in the top five from all three years of the IFSA World Championship.
Bonus scalps. He beat Geoff Dolan in 2003 and Travis Ortmayer in 2008 and he placed above Phil Pfister in 2000, 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2009. He beat out Karl Gillingham in Heat 5 in 2002, Erivn Katona in Heat 3 in 2009 and Jarno Hams failed to qualify for the final in either 2002 or 2003. That's literally everybody who was in IFSA that competed against Marius Pudzianowski at World's, ever.
The three times he failed to capture the title in his entire career at WSM was 2004, 2006 and 2009 where he placed 2nd, 3rd, and 2nd respectively. The odds of him losing the title in 2005, 2007 or 2008 given the events, even with all of those competitors present, is less likely than whether he would have captured 6 career titles had 2004 been the standard 13 event format as he placed 1st or 2nd in 13 out of the 19 events he completed that year.
The guy is a monster, dead ass. There is absolutely no reason anyone should try to take anything away from him. If anything we should be giving Phil Pfister more props for beating him in 2006 when he was at the height of his career.
As an old guy, I love seeing Magnis and Mariusz get their dues. If you never saw these two back in the day, they were electric. Especialy Pudz, as he seemed to have another gear. Loz, you said it well when you said it was like a "switch was flipped." He just ran away from everyone. Also, 5 wins? Best ever.

I cringe when i see comments saying he would have no chance now? Lol it's a different era and mariusz would be stronger now if he was in his prime. No he didn't have the static strength of Z,proven at the Arnolds, but let's not forget he placed second in 09 to Z in a quite heavy comp, that had poundstone, Loz, Terry a young Shaw etc
Mariusz may not the strongest guy in history but imo he was definitely mentally the strongest and had no quit in him

Even before wsm 2003, mariusz was just unbelievable, despite only coming 4th in the Arnold classic that year. You can say with confidence that he was the best in the world by a mile in 2003
I was always impressed with how mariusz managed to improve at all events and even with things he wasnt good at he didnt just stick to focusing on things he was good at, the time he came back and smashed the fingles fingers sticks out to me as the year before he wasnt good at it at all
Fun fact: if Mariusz hadn’t dropped 1 out of those 2 points from the two second place finishes in 2003, he wouldn’t have had to do the final TWO events to win. That’s how insane that was, for context.

Pudzianowski is in a class of his own. WSM competitions have shifted towards more static lifts since his time, but he is arguably the greatest athlete in this sport who will ever live. The man had a body-building physique combined with world-class powerlifting strength, bundled together in WSM athleticism. We'll likely never see another like him. He's the Barry Sanders of WSM.

It's hard to believe that the man who holds the record for most WSM victories and the record for largest point disparity between 1st and 2nd place could be so underrated and under appreciated by his community, but there Pudz sits.
I remember Mariusz was leading by at least 10 points heading into the stones in 2007, but he fumbled one of the stones which placed him quite far behind in that final event. If not for that mistake, it would have been one of the most dominant performances at WSM

old Jouko Ahola the first guy had a incredible 3 year run. won the worlds strongman in 1997, 2nd place 1998, and as this video shows, won again in 1999. A great 3 year leader. I guess he had enough at that point and went into acting and films.

Pudzian is still strong today. Even though he practices MMA, he still bench presses 200 kg per set.
This is an interesting way to compare. I feel like percentage of possible points is the most accurate comparison, though. It eliminates the fluctuations that are only due to changes in the number of competitors and/or events. Plus, if someone has a relatively weaker year of World's (if such a thing can truly be said), then having them and one other good competitor could cause them both to benefit from the weaker overall level of the competition and making only a 1 vs 2 comparison not representative of the domination over the field as a whole (to an extent since the scoring is always based on a comparison to the whole field). It is a cool way to visualize a runaway, win, though. Great video. By the way, I believe using percentage of possible points puts Martins 2019 2nd behind Mariusz 2003, but I haven't gone through every year, so I could be wrong.
If Mariuz was able to compete against the Nordic competitors a few years early, there would have been no competition. The only early guy who could have been him with both men in their prime is probably Kaz. Remember after his last win he was banned by WSM because there was really no contest. Prime strength years gone by ego and politics. Shame

I did a spreadsheet once sort of the opposite of this--every year the WSM winner won by 2 or fewer points, and then a hypothetical overall list of winners if the guy in second had won instead on each of those years.

they did at the arnolds 2022. It was a cool idea but IMO not great for spectating since it took so long between attempts and with the rack/spotters in the way it was tough to see

I would love to see a very heavy squat for max reps, something like 400-410 kg.
Can be dangerous in multiple event show like wsm especially with such big heat and atheltes being dehydrated. Better suited to shows like Arnold's

The huge margin has to do with other competitors having large weaknesses which is a thing of the past now that we have pro strongmen. Total points is more impressive since if you get #1 on all events but someone else has #2 the margins is very small but you are both dominating.
Sometimes I struggle with the maths… but if there is a 3 way tie at #8 and there are still 2 more dominant wins listed below that… wouldn’t that be the Top 12 performances?🤔

Im always puzzled why mariusz is not talked about more, its like u never seem to hear him mentioned in commentary or when people are compering competitors or greatest winners, im talking about in general strongman commentary etc .. i mean hes won the most wsm !! He was always a hero to me, Is there something im missing? Was there a 'falling out' or something? I mean considering how much he dominated and did for the sport to make it faster and fitter surely u would hear hus name being spoken all the time 🤷🏼♂️ just always has seemed odd to me, when watching modern strongman its almost like he didnt exist for most people.
They did bill kazmier dirty, banning him for 2 years for bieng too strong in a show where u display your strengh.

Mariusz's english is hilarious :D You have to realize that when Mariusz was in school polish kids didn't learn english, there was an obligation made by russian occupant to learn russian, that's why this generation couldn't speak english very well, it's still funny though
