      @Josh Traffanstedt It was a tough fight to watch, Holmes wasn't easy on himself for that one, either. I don't think either of them realized how bad off he was until they were in the ring-- Larry knew Ali well enough to know he'd have to kill Ali before he'd give up, so he made the best show of it he could without really trying to hurt him. Holmes had a lot of ring rust here-- but he didn't retire until he was 52. Foreman's walk to a title shot took 5 years, Larry did it in a year and a half.
      He doesn't always get the credit he should. Larry Holmes was a bad mf.

    The last 30secs of this clip. From the call to the corners jumping in the ring. Complete pandemonium. You just don’t see this level of amazing chaos anymore. Sports before social media, and instant access to everything, was an epic part of our lives in a completely different way. Boxing, football, basketball, and even baseball (back then) in the 80s and 90s was bigger than life.

    • @clubberlang589
      @clubberlang589 4 года назад +11

      ArthurVandelay This version of Tyson would dismantle and eliminate Lewis and Holyfield on the same night. Don’t compare pre gaol Tyson and Post gaol Tyson. Holyfield did everything to stall and delay a Tyson heavyweight title fight in early 90’s. Instead defends it against Holmes and Cooper. An insult to boxing. Holyfield was not part of the conspiracy to take Mike out. But Mike was at this point in time with the right method of training, would’ve put Lewis on his knocked him down into next week. Lewis only claim to fame with Tyson is we where both fighters at same age and I beat him. Where was Lewis during mid 80’s. Yeah no where to be seen, instead he wanted to have another crack at Heavyweight Gold Medal in Seoul South Korea. What a noble piece of shit coward. He avoided this version of Mike at all cost. Mr Money so noble about a Gold Medal. That’s the biggest lie in history. He only emerged later on the 80’s hoping that he had developed enough skills to deal with a Rampaging Tyson. Tyson would’ve eaten him for breakfast if he implemented the fighting skills he did here with Larry Holmes. It was just convenient that Riddick Bowe and other soft cocks of boxing materialised after the systematic downfall of Tyson, which all began with damaging his training regime. But when old Tyson was coming back from Buster Douglas loss. Buster didn’t want a rematch and the only one with any balls was Ruddock. He thought he was capable. All the rest beat up on a washed up and mentally broken Tyson. Not a Tyson of this era in boxing.

      You can actually see the swelling on his left temple, the punch landed on almost the most delicate part of the temple and the swelling appeared almost immediately, that too visible even with 80's videos recording!!!
      Larry Holmes was much maligned for his fight with Ali, although I don't understand why so... It was Ali who was in no shape to fight yet he went ahead with it. And then again, one can see Holmes desperately hoping for someone to stop the fight so that he didn't have to keep hurting him, the only other choice he was left with was to throw the fight!

      I'm not really sure what you mean by that.. Tyson had a fast powerful ferocious fighting style that was only gonna work for a young fighter.. It's not like he was a 6'5 Lenox Lewis where he could just hide behind his reach and wait for the right oppurtinites to throw.. Nor was Tyson a one punch knockout guy like Foreman where he could just walk around the ring taking a million shots to the head with the hopes of getting a lucky shot in to end the fight.. Regardless of what Tyson did or who was Training him his style would never work effectively beyond the age of 30-32..

    To all you Millennials out there that don't know anything about boxing but Floyd Mayweather Jr. This is when boxing was at its most exciting. No disrespect of Floyd Mayweather Jr it's just that he didn't bring this kind of excitement nor did a lot of other Fighters and I'm talking about the great ones. Mike Tyson was special because he really used to destroy his opponents with speed and power and incredible boxing skill and aggression. A lot of people only remember Mike Tyson for biting Evander Holyfield's ear's off and that's sad that they only remember him for that or his losses when he was at the lowest points of his life. But let me tell you something, I was there living through these times and Mike Tyson represented these hard times in the eighties and nineties in Brooklyn New York. He represented us, that's why we love him so much and everyone around the country he represented them too because of their hardships. This was a beautiful time bc of Mike, during a time when it was kind of dark and the crack era was crazy in New York City and around the country and Mike came from Brownsville Brooklyn causing destruction throughout the whole world and exciting a lot of people and making us feel good when times were kind of rough for us. Mike Tyson the youngest heavyweight champ of the world. Salute!

      When the fight was made i automatically thought, bad idea, because by 1983, Holmes was already showing signs of age, and some wear and tear. That was obvious in the Tim Witherspoon fight, even more so when he fought another descent heavyweight in Carl Williams. So i thought this fight proved, nothing, if anything. it showed even more, that Holmes glory days were pretty much behind him, in terms of ever regaining a championship belt, back, and being on that level, again.

    Mr Mike Tyson and Mr Kevin Rooney, i salute you for this performance. It is a boxing masterclass that will be remembered in decades if not centuries to come.
    The commentary by Mr Sheridan is also a masterclass. If one listens carefully, Mr Sheridan’s voice changes dramatically upon the first knockdown, and it remains at that level. It is commentary at its finest. Should the viewer close their eyes, they are not left in any doubt that Mr Holmes is in mortal danger.
    Thank you for this masterpiece gentlemen, and thank you to the greatest boxing trainer to have graced the boxing art, Mr Cus D’amato (R.I.P).

    tyson's power was insane...he was a small heavyweight, and mostly punched above his shoulder level as opponents were taller. imagine the power he lost punching upwards against gravity.

      @braydenlupton154 2 года назад +1

      I agree but it was actually an advantage I always thought the same thing with them being taller I always asked my dad if it was true that being taller is better in a fight then he told me no its actually n advantage to be shorter, Tyson said it was his biggest advantage as he had alot of leverage, he didn't use all of his energy I his arms when he punched it was technique he used his hips legs as well as his punching power, also the momentum of dodging his opponents, so me hearing that actually made me more confident about my height I stand at 5'9 and still got a small gap of growth left hopefully :) funny enough my dad is the exact same height as Tyson lmao 5'11 3/4th

      roseforyoubabe you are a dreamer. he wasn't nearly as fast as Mike and he didn't have the defensive skills Mike had. Although he turned out to be an ear biting joke, in his prime he was arguably one of the best ever. No one had the combination of speed,. power, and defensive skills that Mike had.

      I hear oldschool boxing fans cry about Mike being overhyped all the time. Sure his record was nothing special. Sure he fought a bunch of scrubs. Sure he eventually tapered off to be a washed up former shadow of himself, but what great boxers don't eventually wash up? Mike hit a point in his career when he had the best guidance he could get, the best training, the best peak physical conditioning.. he was unstoppable. Maybe Ali could have danced 12 rounds with him but Ali would have left the fight more fucked up than playing rope a dope with Foreman.
