I mean, it's not just Excite Truck that I've played, but including Need For Speed High Stakes+Hot Pursuit 2+Carbon+Hot Pursuit 2010 remake, RC Revenge, Excite Bots Trick Racing, Wave Thunder (arcade and home port), Coolboarders 4, Kirby Air Ride, and F-Zero to name a few. So I've been used to playing multitude of other racing games so, it's just that whatever is more advertised, customers will gravitate to products that their friends or other people find more fun than the other ones.
To counter the fighting game point: Arms was a new thing Nintendo was trying to launch, Smash wasn't on the Switch yet, and Pokken was a port of a Wii U game which itself was a port of an Arcade game.
It's the same with 3D Platformers, my favorite genre. There is now only Mario Odyssey and Kirby and the Forgotten Land (other than 3rd party titles). Look how many 3D Platformers were on N64 and Gamecube. I was really hoping for a 3D Donkey Kong game but nothing yet...
Yeah we are WAY to scarce in that department. You should probably also include 3d World + Bowser's Fury since that's 50% a new game, but even with just those 3 it's kinda disappointing. No Mario Odyssey 2, no 3d Donkey Kong game, no 3d Yoshi game, even Kirby and the Forgotten Land sticks to the 2d platforming formula a lot more than most other 3d platformers do (although the game is still one of the Switch's best hands down.)
I remember the days when Nintendo also had a foot race (Track and Field), a stunt race (Stunt Race FX), jet ski race (Wave Race), a winter board race (1080), a uni race (Uniracer), and a motor racing games (Mach Rider). The only few they had not tried are street race (like Midnight Club), horse race (like Final Furlong), and boat race (like Hydro Thunder).
I remember I really wanted a Mach Rider reboot during the Wii U days, after seeing Mad Max Fury Road. Exploring an open-world post-apocalyptic hellscape, doing missions and whatever you need to survive, customizing your motorcycle with alien technology, using the Wii U gamepad to track down people or means of navigation, maybe even have an online component where you could form gangs or race against other players.
I still love the idea of Star Fox Grand Prix, that weird rumor that kinda never really was a thing. If you take Star Fox as an on rails game, you essentially already have a racer. The level is as confined and linear as a racing track and the core concept is to not crash and burn. The difference is that Star Fox as a shooter is not focused on speed... but imagine if it was! Star Fox 64 is unique in that its levels occasionally branch and allow different level exits. That choice is usually made simply by moving in a certain position and you can take your grand ol' time to finish the level. I was always fascinated by the idea that a future game took this branching concept and gave it a sense of urgency. These branching points would close off if you took too long. If instead you performed very well, took out enemies efficiently and quickly, you could progress through the level more quickly, reach these branching points in time and take a new and more difficult level segment as a reward for skill mastery. A sort of combination of the shooter genre with the racer genre. I don't think that will ever happen, but especially in a time of speedrunning as a spectator sport and speedrunning focused games like Neon White I feel like there is something there to explore.
There is definitely a market for a fast pace space racer. I feel like flight is under utilized in racing games. "Star Wars Resistance" season 2 episode 9 "The Voxx Vortex 5000" is a great example of what a flight/space racer genre could be capable of. It's rather stand alone and well worth a watch. In fact you just made me want to go back and watch it again.
Starlink: Battle for Atlas has a racing minigame you can play on the Crimson Moon, if you want. Some people think they actual got the idea to do this FROM the Star Fox Grand Prix rumor.
@ruolbu oh, that's unfortunate. It's actually an all-time top 10 for me, though I haven't played it in a while so that's definitely subject to change next replay.
I mean, to be fair, most traditional racing games are awfully similar to each other, and even the individual gameplay of most racing games is pretty repetitive since you can only race on so many tracks and always have a pretty simple goal. Nintendo doesn't want to release too many games that are so similar to each other. Plenty of people say that they don't NEED to make a new F-Zero game for this same reason, since Mario Kart already covers that genre as much as they need to. Now, as an avid F-Zero fan, I don't agree with that assessment. Even with all the similarities within the genre, Mario Kart and F-Zero are still plenty different (though I think if we do get a full new F-Zero after 99 then it should have quite a lot of singleplayer campaign content akin to GX and GP Legend, as to differentiate from Mario Kart which is typically much more multiplayer focused with the exception of F-Zero 99). But if we were to get something like a new Mario Kart, F-Zero, Wave Race, Excite Bike, and Donkey Kong Racing game for every Nintendo system, then the racing game market definitely get oversaturated and each of these individual games would have to do SO much crazy stuff in order to stand out in what is normally a pretty same-y genre. Maybe they could pull it off without making any of these games to similar to one another, who knows, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the risk or the effort. I think it'd be best if they just kept it to 2 racing games per system, a Mario Kart and then either an F-Zero or a Wave Race (as a fan, my preference is F-Zero, though the return of Wave Race would also be welcomed with open arms)
Great video. I think a lot of it has to do with Nintendo reacting to industry change as well. Racing games are still popular, but they were even more popular back in the 80s-2000s, so there were more games to cater to that genre demand. Now racing games have centralized into a couple realistic franchises (Forza, Gran Turismo) and kart racers. Nintendo probably doesn’t feel the need to put out multiple ones. It’s the same with sports games. They used to have multiple franchises (Ken Griffey Jr, NBA Courtside, 1080 Avalanche) and now centralized into Mario sports games now that they see there’s not as much demand as there was in the past. If there’s another breakout hit in the genre that wows players and makes the genre more interesting again, like what happened to RPGs in the mid 2010s, I think it’s more likely we’ll see a revival of racing games from Nintendo. Additionally, for a future video, could you cover the rights issues that arise from Nintendo collaborating with other studios. That’s their usual MO and people praise them for it, but I think it would be interesting to see the challenges and opportunities that come for franchises and games that Nintendo makes with outside studios. For example, I’m thinking of games like Baten Kaitos Origins and Bayonetta 2, which are owned by Nintendo but whose franchises are owned by another company, or games like Ogre Battle 64 which are co-owned by Nintendo but haven’t had a new entry in a while.
That's not exactly correct. Baten Kaitos Origins and Bayonetta are still owned by Namco and Sega respectively. The only thing Nintendo has over Bayonetta 2 and 3 is that they have the PUBLISHING rights.
The Sports games issue stems from licensing problems. EA owns a majority of sports licenses like NFL, NHL, and NBA. They used to have FIFA and MLB, but now MLB is now licensed to Sony, and currently, no one has the FIFA license (unless it's Konami).
Ok I do wanna say something about the fighting game point at the start: all of those (excluding arms because that thing was dead on arrival and even then it did its own thing) were different sub genres smash is a platform fighter while Poken is a more traditional fighting game
They could also just make a F-Zero GX remastered for the Switch... if only just to throw something at fans / people who would like to give the game a try without spending hundreds. And to just use again a saga that does still have some name recognition.
They need something akin to Micro Maniacs on the Switch, that game was crazy fun back on the PS1! Speed Freaks was also another great kart racer back then, I’d love a remake or new entry for Switch.
Nice vid. It would be nice if they made some more I feel like the genre has a lot of issues at the moment. The whole "The Crew" controversy on top of the constant push for realism and microtransactions tend to hear a lot of fans of games like Need for speed preferring the older titles. All the best.
What do you think about nintendo getting Ubisoft to port Trackmania (2020) to switch 2? The game is doing pretty well and got ports to xbox/ps5 last year, with the rumored power of the new console TM would be a great racing game to announce is coming, especially with its RUclips popularity and community driven content.
Re: Nintendo 1st party games on 3DS. I have seen Mario Sports Superstars listed in "top whatever number 3DS racing games" because horse racing is one of the playable sports. Haven't played it myself, though.
I truly think Nintendo is aware of all the fans that want more from this genre than just Mario kart. I think within the next few years we will get a new FZero game. I wouldn’t mind a new wave race or diddy kong racing tho 😂 maybe even a new kuru kuru kururin game! I can only dream.
3:11 the reason is very simply, Mario Kart this is the reason, why Nintendo do others racing franchises in they consoles, why make a new F-Zero that will sell barely a milion, if they can do a new Mario Kart game that will sell milions and milions.
Quality not quantity. Nintendo tend to release titles when they have an idea for them rather than 'time to milk another entry.' They have an idea and they decide which franchise it suits. So they may have an idea that could suit F-Zero, but it might take Mario Kart somewhere new, which is much more of an important impact.
One of the reasons that Nintendo almost never makes racing games. It's because Mario Kart isn't just super popular it's Somehow More Popular And Sells Better Than the Main Series Mario Games. I like F-zero but it would always be overshadowed by Mario Kart In terms of sales
What an excellent video. I have been wondering about this for years. Nintendo Directs would come and go without new racing titles and I would be left disappointed ☹️ It’s sad to see Wave Race, F-Zero, 1080 Snowboarding and others neglected. Meanwhile there are scores of JRPGs and Metroidvanias clogging up the release schedules. Hopefully a new racing game isn’t too far off.
In the GameCube era, I wanted a sim racing game so badly. The PS2 had GT3 and 4, and the Xbox had Forza and PGR. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen and will never happen. Edit: you didn’t mention 1080°!
There was R: Racing Evolution, a Ridge Racer spinoff that aimed for a more real driving experience. It was a multiplatform release, with the GameCube being one of the platforms it released on.
Many have speculated that Mario Kart 9 has been waiting for Switch 2, but could the next F-Zero be waiting for hardware that could handle 60 FPS and not look bad? Never thought about it that way.
Even the GameCube F-Zero looked pretty good though, so I'd bet they could pull it off at 60fps if they really wanted to. But DO they really want to though? Idk, might be smarter, easier, and better for them to just wait, so I'm choosing to believe your theory. Mostly just because I want it to be true, but there's also some good logic to it.
There's still one way to make an F-Zero rather simple. Instead of making a new mainline game, they might as well try to remake their Legend timeline. While we already have Climax as a fanpatch, they could make one full game with proper story modes, newly designed tracks that looks a lot like the TV series, and rearranged music. They could also remaster the TV series and put it out for free on RUclips, much like Bandai with their Gundam series. That would be fantastic.
This is a somewhat tangentially related and kind of stupid question, but what are your thoughts on the possibility of Nintendo supporting the PC platform? I know the majority stance is that Nintendo would never do such a thing for historical and financial reasons, but there’s an irrational part of me that feels it might happen sooner than later. With the majority of Sony’s Helldivers 2’s success being credited to its PC playerbase, I’ve been more seriously considering what Nintendo could gain (or lose) by adding PC support for their multiplayer games (at least). A huge benefit I could see for a Splatoon or Mario Kart entry on both Switch 2 and PC would that it would be more accessible for regions where PC gaming is better established like China. There’s an argument to be made Nintendo branching out to PC would detract sales from the Switch (2), but honestly I think Nintendo’s in a unique position where they have more to gain on PC than either Sony or Microsoft. PS5 and Xbox Series have been getting closer to being PCs in both capabilities and functions, and I feel that overlap unfortunately causes competition between the two versions. The Switch and its successor will have a very unique niche and form factor that is very unlike PC, which could allow both versions to succeed in harmony (this reasoning might explain why Switch has been so financially successful in spite of its ease of emulation). That being said, I would definitely expect Nintendo to set up their own terrible storefront with nightmarish DRM attached were they to support PC. I apologize for the tangent, I’d be interested to hear others takes on whether Nintendo supporting PC would be disastrous or pretty good.
Unfortunately, Nintendo's way too stubborn for this. They won't port anything off of their own systems (or mobile devices, which I guess maybe sets a precedent?) unless you put a gun to their head. Also, considering how their systems substantially rely on their first party output, they might torpedo their success if they start putting big releases elsewhere. But, people often play some of their older titles on PC through emulation anyway, so they MIGHT AS WELL get something official on there for older titles so they can at least get paid for what people are already doing.
That depends on whether or not their next system is a sinking ship. Remember, Sega used to have a line of PC ports of various games from their dedicated hardware called Sega PC, which ranged from Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and Sega Saturn. Most of those games from Sega PC are derived from Sega Saturn, as those games and that system were selling poorly in the West.
Nintendo doesn’t *need* to do any other games in the racing genre, which sort of makes sense to me. F-Zero had the _speed_ but now Mario Kart is fast. Plus it has multi-player. You have tons of characters. Adding more games would mean that gamers are split up amongst multiple games, which makes matchmaking more difficult. There’s not a huge benefit there.
@@therealjaystone2344 Sure, but I'd bet the number of players who want to play 300cc but will play 200cc is smaller than the number of players who want to play 200cc and won't play 300cc. People who want to play fast are probably willing to play slower, compared to people who play slower being willing to play fast
I wonder if they would go for another party battle racer concept. It seems like every Kart racer that ever got inspired by Mario Kart decided to copy the concept of picking up items, throwing projectiles and dropping traps. I don't see Nintendo repeating their own concept like that. So what would be the hook? Make a racer that attempts to focus on the splatoon territory mechanic? Paint areas while racing that your team can benefit from if they driver over it? Try to cover the whole track and thus be incentivised to take unique lines instead of the perfect racing line? I think they would rather investigate these new concepts, and I'm curious what they could come up with.
An f-zero remake would be pretty cool if it was marketed as a Mario kart game but the speed is turned to 11 and u can just go faster than you ever could before in Mariokart
part of the problem with making your character super fast in racing games is that stages need to then also become bigger and require more theming for the backgrounds. Mario Kart would probably have a lot of trouble keeping up their iconic level design when you fly past everything instantly.
Speaking of genres nintendo mostly ignores, could you make a video on why prior to splatoon nintendo rarely made any first person or third person shooters, their past attempts at the genre, why splatoon became their first series truly dedicated to the genre, and why even after splatoon shooters are still rare among nintendo's catalog of games?
I have it on some authority that they're remaking Dillon's Rolling Western with the Kirby team, so that might have a racing multiplayer component. Although, that info is old and vague and it's very possible it was just Dream Buffet, and that came and went. Another possibility is that Dream Buffet is something of a tech demo or rather dev training for this Dillon game. My guess, therefore, is that the Dillon game has a Miiverse component and has been delayed alongside the Switch 2. It's not strictly speaking a remake but re-doing of the trilogy, along the lines of Link Between Worlds and Star fox Zero.
Would be the perfect time to release Majora's Mask alongside with it, if true. Perhaps use the renewed license of Toon Link in marketing, as a mascot of a new Switch sports Miiverse where the gimmick would be tha tyou use sort of like animal masks. This would also be a great way to make flexible use of new Miis, if their features can be used as a texture in any game, with a mask on the face of the polygonal models.
Imagine a new crossover racing IP ran on Isabelle, Dillion, Toon Goron Link, Kafei, and Fox McCloud, that has Hyrule Warriors mechanics. I admit I'm regressing purely into fantasy territory now.
It was touted as the first original Fighting Game IP in years. Given the success of Splatoon for the 3rd Person Shooter Genre, it's no surprise that Arms was successful (sort-of) in that regard.

No, they don't. It's the same reason why Nintendo doesn't outright own Donkey Kong 64 as the Source Code is with Rare, something which Nintendo has to get permission to utilize.
I been a Nintendo fan for a very long time, but I am personally disappointed with Nintendo decision to go with the Nintendo Switch 2. It just seems like an upgraded Switch rather then a new console, more like a Super Nintendo Switch or Switch U that will be coming up. Because Nintendo popularity and amazing games I am sure it will do well, but my overall disappointment is that in Nintendo first 3 consoles they were bolder and move competitive and innovative in their designs to develop the best consoles before they adopted a blue ocean strategy, focusing on using underpowered consoles instead and making family market and kid friendly and paying less attention to third parties. Eventually Sony took control of this and stormed away with the Playstation consoles and Microsoft also managed to get into the major market with the XBOX even challenging Nintendo as Nintendo Wii U tanked. I was just hoping they designed something revolutionary with amazing graphics, VR and AR with online and television gaming not a hybrid console that acts like a handheld at times. Sega and Atari the former heavyweight champions in consoles made great games, but their consoles could not compete with the heavy competition along with the games. Nintendo managed to stay in because they are the best in the world in making games, better then Sony and Microsoft. But Sony and Microsoft have been making a lot better consoles then Nintendo recently. Switch was a major improvement over the Nintendo WII and Wii U and a lot better then the GameCube although those systems where still pretty good if not exceptional. The last console I was super excited about from Nintendo was the Nintendo 64 because that was a revolutionary console ahead of all the other consoles as 64 bit console even though it used cartridges unlike Playstation and XBOX with their 32 bit systems. Sony did a much better job marketing the video game consoles then Nintendo and Sega at the time and managed to become the king of the console wars with the Playstation and Playstation 2 and so forth. The only company outside the major players that makes more money then these companies in video games is TenCent from China and they don't even have their own console but diversify in various aspects of video game.

@@shinra2755 I recommend Crash Team Racing as a successor to Diddy Kong racing.
To counter the fighting game point:
Arms was a new thing Nintendo was trying to launch, Smash wasn't on the Switch yet, and Pokken was a port of a Wii U game which itself was a port of an Arcade game.
@@calvinbrinenestoris2357 agreed.
Tangentially related, every time a new Nintendo console launch comes around I keep my fingers crossed for a new Pilotwings
If the new Switch can do ray-tracing, I wonder if they'd do something with Wave Race.
@@GAHAHAHH I recommend The Next Penelope, that game combines shooting and racing.
Starlink: Battle for Atlas has a racing minigame you can play on the Crimson Moon, if you want. Some people think they actual got the idea to do this FROM the Star Fox Grand Prix rumor.
@@calvinbrinenestoris2357 And I really scrapped my copy of Starlink, massively disliked playing that game. Here is one more thing I can check out now.
Arcade racers are more popular than realistic racers.
The Sports games issue stems from licensing problems. EA owns a majority of sports licenses like NFL, NHL, and NBA. They used to have FIFA and MLB, but now MLB is now licensed to Sony, and currently, no one has the FIFA license (unless it's Konami).
If Nintendo has a dozen 2D platformers then they can definitely have more than one racing franchise.
Ok I do wanna say something about the fighting game point at the start: all of those (excluding arms because that thing was dead on arrival and even then it did its own thing) were different sub genres smash is a platform fighter while Poken is a more traditional fighting game

I have never once heard of the 2000’s referred to as the “naughties” but I love it and hope I will remember to use it
If not naughties, then what? "Aughts"?
They could also just make a F-Zero GX remastered for the Switch... if only just to throw something at fans / people who would like to give the game a try without spending hundreds.
And to just use again a saga that does still have some name recognition.
They need something akin to Micro Maniacs on the Switch, that game was crazy fun back on the PS1! Speed Freaks was also another great kart racer back then, I’d love a remake or new entry for Switch.
I hope they make an excitebike reboot akin to motorstorm
I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! ... Sorry, I just want more Nintendo racing games..
There's Cruis'n Blast if you want that.
TIL Kirby's Dream Buffet is a racing game. I knew it existed, I'd just never bothered to look up any gameplay.
Nintendo could do a lot with excite bike, i can image them merging ideas from Freekstyle and with a twist
2:38 maybe Nintendo sees the fighting and tactics games as different situations
Quality not quantity. Nintendo tend to release titles when they have an idea for them rather than 'time to milk another entry.' They have an idea and they decide which franchise it suits. So they may have an idea that could suit F-Zero, but it might take Mario Kart somewhere new, which is much more of an important impact.
The Pokémon franchise in question:
Triangle Strategy is more so a Square Enid title since that eventually came out on Steam
I’m excited for Super Smash Kart :)
Great analysis I agree I hop to see more racing games from Nintendo 🙏
Excite truck was cool the second bug one was rubbish
I would love Nintendo to branch out of Mario Kart in the genre. There's just so much to offer.
Nintendo Directs would come and go without new racing titles and I would be left disappointed ☹️
It’s sad to see Wave Race, F-Zero, 1080 Snowboarding and others neglected. Meanwhile there are scores of JRPGs and Metroidvanias clogging up the release schedules.
Hopefully a new racing game isn’t too far off.
Aside Mario kart
In the GameCube era, I wanted a sim racing game so badly. The PS2 had GT3 and 4, and the Xbox had Forza and PGR. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen and will never happen.
Edit: you didn’t mention 1080°!
There was R: Racing Evolution, a Ridge Racer spinoff that aimed for a more real driving experience. It was a multiplatform release, with the GameCube being one of the platforms it released on.
@@X2011racer I know this one. I hate its slippery controls and the lack of anti-aliasing. Overall, it's just ok.
Kirby dream buffet is closer to Mario party or fall guys then it is to a racer imo
Racing game genre is hard to sell if there’s no big IP behind it. Mario Kart is the party game like Smash bros is.
As far as I know, Nintendo unfortunately do not hold the rights to all the anime based on their IP.
Even for third party, there is basically only nfs(the worst NFS I ever played) and burnout (from the same developer I think?)
Still sad we never got Excitebots in Europe. 😢
300cc is still faster than 200cc
@@therealjaystone2344 Sure, but I'd bet the number of players who want to play 300cc but will play 200cc is smaller than the number of players who want to play 200cc and won't play 300cc. @@JasonBoyce not too many players want to play 200cc either online but 150cc
After playing DKR, CTR and D-Zero, MK feels really slow imo.
Despite their related arcade origins, the appeal of fighting games and beat em ups (especially Musou games) is not really that similar.
I had a giggle when you said highly realistic and "forza" in the same sentence.
All I want is a Nintendo version of Burnout.
I think a Splatoon racing game is an obvious choice for a new racing game from Nintendo.
What about simulation sports like the nes days?
Forza exists, so there's no point.
@user-be3qc7re9o He meant stuff like World Class Track Meet, and the Ken Griffey Jr. games.
An f-zero remake would be pretty cool if it was marketed as a Mario kart game but the speed is turned to 11 and u can just go faster than you ever could before in Mariokart
At that point I’d much rather just have Captain Falcon be usable in a new Mario Kart tbh
CAProduction could make one if it's something like Kirby Airride and Bulk Slash. Or Earth Defense Force.
@@kaminari-Ife I’m surprised he’s not given that they’re f-zero tracks in mariokart 8
part of the problem with making your character super fast in racing games is that stages need to then also become bigger and require more theming for the backgrounds. Mario Kart would probably have a lot of trouble keeping up their iconic level design when you fly past everything instantly.

Yes but the micro transactions really killing the genre
Speaking of genres nintendo mostly ignores, could you make a video on why prior to splatoon nintendo rarely made any first person or third person shooters, their past attempts at the genre, why splatoon became their first series truly dedicated to the genre, and why even after splatoon shooters are still rare among nintendo's catalog of games?
I want Nintendo Kart
fun fact Nintendo's first video game was a racing game
I want a Star Fox game in the design of Mass Effect. Nintendo needs to lean on the epic space opera.
Hello good sir, may I interest you in joining the cult of Metroid?
I dont think racing games is any more popular then fighting games '-'
Lets be real I don't think Nintendo has a wide expertise on racing games.
Please explain to me why arms was successful?
It was touted as the first original Fighting Game IP in years.
Given the success of Splatoon for the 3rd Person Shooter Genre, it's no surprise that Arms was successful (sort-of) in that regard.

What the hell does graphics and performance have to do with those things?
Nothing if you wanna criticize a franchise criticize it on whether or not it delivered on the messages and themes it promised
