To me overrated means an actor that's not very talented but gets many jobs. An actor thats good who gets many roles ain't overrated. Imo Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot are very overrated.
I can't ever recall anyone comparing either of these two to Merryl Streep or Kate Winslet or Gary Oldman, etc. so I don't know that I could call them overrated. They get lots of work I suppose because they are extremely attractive and do a decent job in certain roles. That may be frustrating but its not being overrated in my book.
Overrated means someone that is decent or good at their job overall, but they get too much credit. Nobody is rating Cavill or especially Gal as being great actors. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are overrated.
Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose, Jurassic Park, A Perfect World, October Sky, Novocaine, The Master, Wild, 99 Homes, and Marriage Story just to name a few. Laura Dern is awesome in everything except Star Wars and Jurassic Park sequels.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing up Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman. I too thought that that was one of the strangest performances I’ve seen in a long time, and since seeing that I’ve had kind of a distaste for him. I’ll confess I haven’t seen him in much so I do need to see more. Also 100% agree with you on Laura Dern. Her 4 performances with David Lynch alone are all superb and very different
What's even Stranger about Pedro's performance is in the comics,MaxWell Lord is very manipulative, almost Machiavellian.Perhaps Pedro was trying to find the characters humanity.
That film was awful, but you can't pin that on Pedro alone. His body language in the Mandalorian is pretty great, and he's the reason The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent works at all.
I think Jenna Ortega is a charming young actress, but it might be time to pump the brakes a little. A lot of people build her up like she's the next Audrey Hepburn or something.
To be fair, Audrey was a little overrated as an actress as well, lol. (And I love Audrey, she was a great movie star, cool person, and was great in many movies). Watch "The Children's Hour" to see her get out-acted by Shirley Maclaine!
I think people who haven't grown up in Mediteranean families can't really appreciate just how right Brando was as Vito Corleone. He reminded me of so many people in my family that I was certain he had to be at the very least Italian. It's uncanny.
He's considered one of the greatest actors who ever lived,in case you didn't know...that opinion is from people who know acting, like other successful actors
It seems like an attack on popularity for the sake of being different, but Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya aren’t BAD actors, they’re simply unimpressive. If either of them looked like an average person, they never would’ve been in hit movies or shows. Hopefully one day, like Robert Pattinson in Good Time for example, they’re able to craft a genuinely gripping performance
Definitely watch Euphoria for a great portrayal of an addict from Zendaya. Her scene with her AA Sponsor at the Diner is legendary. Timotheé in Call Me By Your Name has a scene towards the end that nearly made me cry. That doesn’t happen often.
@@hymnofthenightingale the fact that euphoria is the only body of work people go too proves the point of her lack of range. He’s great but it’s still an extension off all her other roles were she plays a moody teenager. She has not shown range as Euphoria is constantly the only thing that’s brought up to prove her acting ability. Even Sydney Sweeney who is smaller in stardom shows more range when you look at her filmography. An actors skill is based on their portfolio diversity and how well they perform.
@@tds7078 but a small instance doesn’t mean he’s not overrated. Timothee has a lot of potential but Call me by your name is the one everyone goes too for his acting ability without looking at his whole filmography. Him in Dune and The King is basically the same performance. In ladybird he doesn’t have to emote and falls into the same aloofness in little women. He was outshined by miles in bones and all. His celebrity status has pushed his career further then his acting compared to an actress like Florence Pugh who’s performances and diverse portfolio are both matching in high quality regardless if the movie she is in is bad. Like I said I think timothee has potential and I’m excited for dune pt 2 and especially Wonka which I think can show his true stardom but as of now the huge “stanning of him” doesn’t match his performance. Timothee and Leo get compared a lot. Call me by your name would be Timothees what’s eating Gilbert grape and timothee is in his heartthrob “Titanic” era but like how Leo did he needs to distance his self away from that. I’m waiting for Timothees aviator, catch me if you can, the departed era.
@@dessmi9184 But many people believe her performance in Euphoria is a genuinely gripping performance. She has won two Lead Actress in a Drama Primetime Emmys for that show.
I wouldn't call him as an actor overrated but Robert DeNiro's performance in Goodfellas has always been super overrated to me. People always praise him for Goodfellas but I never thought he was that great in that movie and was just kinda playing the character in the most straightforward predictable way possible, which is especially disappointing when you see how much all the other cast members are totally bringing the heat. Standing alongside Liotta giving the performance of his literal career and definitely one of the most psycho Joe Pesci roles, you'd think DeNiro would do something a little more inspired, but instead he kinda phones it in. I'm ready to get skewered for this!
Yeah, Deniro coasted more than once by giving a patented, expected character portrayal that he already used playing past characters. It didn't hurt Goodfellas for me though, as Jimmy was supposed to be the older, smarter mentor figure for Tommy and Henry anyway, so his baseline performance fit what I perceived as the character
@@earlpipe9713 Hmm................very good point! Didn't think of that. But even if his performance fit this character, it still isn't one of my favorite DeNiro roles. Glad he's part of the cast, nevertheless!
I have never read any major praise for De Niro in Goodfellas - the movie's performances that get the most praise are Pesci and Bracco not De Niro, afterall he got nominated for Awakenings over Goodfellas.
Funny as I always thought his Casino performance was bang average, that has grown on me a bit in the last twenty years. I think with Goodfellas imo he somehow holds his own by doing less than everyone else on purpose
Zendaya is very overrated to me. When she’s in a show or movie you never see the character you only see her. She gives the weakest performance in “Euphoria” her characters never have any depth and all she does is squint her eyes at the camera and forces the emotions.
Here are some actors that I’d like to see more of: James McAvoy, JK Simmons, Willem Dafoe, Mel Gibson, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Won Bin, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Barry Keoghan, Samuel L Jackson, Johnny Depp. Actresses: Emily Blunt, Cate Blanchett, Frances McDormand, Hilary Swank, Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Margot Robbie, Florence Pugh. We need more movies like Gravity, Split, A Quiet Place, The Lighthouse, Whiplash, The Machinist, Black Swan. Movies that bring out the best in the actors. So much untapped potential even in these older seasoned actors.
I was just watching all three James dean films and when he emotionally breaks down in rebel and east of Eden ,I feel the vulnerability seems so genuine,I think his acting not only holds up today and goes beyond just being a presence but a tortured soul is rarely able to be done that honestly by almost all contemporary actors.
the thing is if you watch Brando and then watch Dean it's almost distracting how much he is trying to emulate him. he also couldn't help but pose for the camera in a way that comes across as blatant. he was very talented though.
Dicaprio is insanely overrated imo, and totally agree on that comment of Pascal.... he was very boring and monotone as Joel in Last of us, his accent was all over the place too.
" Dicaprio is insanely overrated" dog shit and unoriginally pretentious take that needs to be thrown into the abyss. The disrespect towards Leo is unreal and gives me a reason to dunk on more people like you...brother you don't know fuck all about acting.
I don't think so. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Aviator, Catch Me if You Can, Revnant, Wolf of Wall Street, The Departed, Inception. He's carried too many great movies, even as a child. He seems rated properly me to me. Takes challenging roles and at least seems to invest in them.
He's been great when casted right for me. When he's miscast though? Ugh, why'd he have to star in Gangs of New York mann😢 It would've been an all time classic+banger, if only his role was properly cast with a believably guttersnipe tough seeming actor who didn't sound like a speech therapy dropout when attempting an Irish brogue
re. Brando in the Godfather...I think part of the issue there is that it has become so iconic and imitated that it's impossible to see it with 1972 eyes now. But the last 2 scenes...I think they still more than hold up. No other actor who ever lived could have done those scenes better.
I was totally fascinated by Kristen Stewart in "Crimes Of The Future", I found myself rewinding a lot of her parts just to really take in the nuance of all the little micro expressions and mannerisms, I was very impressed, I didn't know she had that gear. She has my attention now.
Daniel Day Lewis on Robert Frost: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both and be one traveller Long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth. And that's where I'm going to bash your head in with a rock.
I will throw Keira Knightly to the wolves here. Easily the worst actor in any film she's ever been in, and always sticks out like "Keira Knightly playing a character".
She's humble as well, judging by my one encounter with her, wherein I saw her leaving a screening with Alexander Payne and told her how much I loved "Citizen Ruth," and she immediately pointed to her "Ruth" director to give him all the credit- class act.
Totally agree. Citizen Ruth, holy smokes. And man oh man, Wild At Heart....after doing Blue Velvet. She was great in Big Little Lies (I think that's the name of the show).
Check out Kristen Stewart in a movie called Speak. Very understated performance, and she was perfect for the role. It's a very lifetime movie kind of plot but I really think it's a hidden gem of a movie. Liked her a lot in Panic Room as well.
Since he only made 3 films before his tragic death, it is difficult to rate James Dean since he was still a work-in-progress and had yet to come into his own. For all we know he may have gone on to become a great actor, or just another flash in the pan. Like JFK's presidency, we will never know if James Dean was on the cusp of greatness, or became an icon only from the hope of what might have been.
Probably the latter. Dying at a young age tends to have that effect for celebrities. James Dean was a star, not an actor. As a star, he cornered the market in handsome but grumpy young men who are just so terribly misunderstood by society. As an actor, he was laughably bad and one-note in his performances. He might have seemed edgy and dangerous to 1950s audiences but not now. I defy anyone to watch Rebel Without a Cause - the movie most tied with the James Dean legacy - and not cringe at his performance.
I find Laura Dern really underrated. I was watching a movie called Bastard out of Carolina. Really sad movie about child abuse/poverty in the south. But I kept getting pulled into the story by the narration. I thought, "That lady has a really nice voice/interesting accent. I need to look it up later and find out who that is." Turns out, it was little ol Laura Dern from LA. LOL And I remembered she was in that great Eastwood movie A Perfect World- which is set in Texas. That lady could fit in anywhere. I think Aubrey Plaza might be overrated. I think I like her as a person. She's really interesting, and funny. But there are some roles she's played where she just sticks out like a sore thumb. I think I feel the same about Zooey Deschanel. She's interesting, nice, funny, but her acting choices often feel off. Funny, when it's not supposed to be, inappropriate, underacted a lot of the time. She's a damn good singer tho. Big fan of her music career.
I think most appreciate Dern's excellent acting talent. The only reason she's underated, imo, is she didn't play the Hollywood game of chasing as many mainstream blockbuster roles as possible, while also not acting like an attention junkie on the endless pr and awards show circuit that too many actors over prioritize.
Little known James Dean fact: he played the Frankenstein Monster in a high-school play called Goon With the Wind. There are images online. In later years, the play would be nicknamed Rebel Without a Brain.
The worst type of poor acting occurs when the artist disappears up their own orrifice. Self consciousness can affect any performer from Meryl Streep (in The Deerhunter) to Madonna (in everything she's been let loose on)
I agree with you around 7:10 about Pedro Pascal's performance in WW 1984. I really think he was miscast for the part. The wig and the accent made him seem odd.
Tom Hanks, he has some great movies and has worked with some of the best directors of all time, but I don't think he's an all-time great actor. I think most of his performances could easily be played by other actors. Leo, same thing and I can't buy him as a tough guy. I laugh when he beats up people up in The Departed or Gangs of NY. I think he's a better scumbag wimp character like in Wolf of Wall Street or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Meryl Streep, I think she has been pretty boring since the 90's and I get that Hollywood loves her but I find other women in her generation like Glenn Close or Helen Mirren to be a lot more interesting and I think they have more range. Kate Hudson, She's a nepo baby which is fine but I don't think she has the charisma, looks or talent of her mom and I don't think she would've made it if she was from a family with no connections.
The best scenes in Rebel Without A Cause are those with JD, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. I always thought they captured the intense proto/preter-sexual nature of teenage friendships. Very much chaste but never more intimate and magical. That is where the film successfully shows the essence of being a teenager. Rather than the 'rebellion' stuff.
He's overrated and laughable as a tough guy but he can be great at times, I think he's better as the scumbag in Wolf of Wall Street like roles or the whiney wimp in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Actually that was entirely animatronics with a dash of CGI seasoning. Pascal delivered his lines from home, over a livestream that was synced with said effects
I'm a big Cronenberg fan and I'd been holding off on watching Crimes of the Future because of the middling reviews I'd seen, but you've remotivated me to give it a chance sooner rather than later. Thanks!
@@brianhaas1154 Eh, they're about equal in my eyes (and Brandon's most recent movie, can't remember the name of it, was AWFUL). Still keeping an open mind though, since he's kind of and up-and-comer.
If you’re attempting to judge the performances of Actors of the past. You must understand that era and the factors involved in film production. I believe you also need to see a decent amount of films in a given era. You must also understand your own taste, how things affect you and your own personal biases. Now this isn’t easy and for the most part I have found that I agree in part with many of the opinions I’ve read. I’ve only begun watching recently but the Host has been surprisingly well balanced, insightful and fairly knowledgeable of the art of cinema. Big Ups to her!! I will say that the industry is suffering from a small (very) talent pool and lack of truly original storytelling. I’m looking forward to seeing more here.
I really like Crimes of the Future more with every viewing. (I've seen it twice now) While the plot and themes are a little half baked, the atmosphere and performances from Stewart and Viggo are truly captivating. I hope it's not Cronenberg's last movie. He's always in my top 3 directors.
@@RealJeffTidwell That makes sense. I think it's apropos that he made the film when he did when all the debates about transhumanism and transgender surgery are heating up. It's interesting that his movies still have the sex binary represented without question lol.
Definitely agree with the Jared Leto take. He's had some really good performances, but his ego definitely seems to have gotten the best of him nowadays, and his performances always come off so smug and pretentious, even with a role like Joker.
Dwayne Johnson is an interesting one, especially since I grew up as a wrestling fan when he was on top in WWE. I'll be honest, as a kid, The Rock was never one of my favorites (I always cheered for the bad guys like Triple H to beat him), but as I've gotten older, I've grown to respect his natural charisma and entertainment skills a lot more. I don't think he always picks good movies; in fact, I would argue most of his movies range from crap to okay. But he doesn't seem to be a negative attribute in these movies; if anything, he has great self-awareness and a likability that aids the movies he's in. These days, I kind of like him more as a wrestling star than a movie star, but he's a worthwhile A-lister for sure.
Timothee Chalamet. Guy is kinda one note and not sure what it is but it seems that no matter how different the roles he’s cast in.. he’s been the same in everything.
Statham would make an interesting study as an actor/career. He's really good at Action-mocking comedic material, such as Snatch, Ghosts of Mars, the Crank films.
The Rock said 'i dont need to do those heavy psychologically roles, i save that for my therapist'. I would say his acting on Ballers was waaaay better than his film work. KStew is at her best when she has a great director who knows how to utilize her-her performance in clouds of sils maria totally turned me around on her. A lot of her bigger films though i think she is misused. i love deans subtler moments like in rebel when the gang leader is trying to goad him into a fight and just says 'man you read to many comic books' pretty insane to see that kind of effortless confidence in an actor so young
If an actor dies young, they always get way too much credit for their acting chops. Heath Ledger, James Dean, and Paul Walker are three examples of this
The thing is I don't understand why Pedro pascal is famous. He does not have one famous role, I just know by name. I guess executives just like him, he's a good actor but his acting doesn't justify getting jumped on every adaptation.
I am a huge believer in Kristen Stewart. It's kinda embarrassing because she got all that teenage love a decade or so ago for the Twilight movies (none of which I've seen). In fact, I think I've only watched her in two movies, Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper, but in both there was something magnetic about her. She really blew me away. It's her presence, like you said, her moment to moment nuances that mesmerize me. I bet I could watch her performing just about any mundane task and I'd be transfixed. To me it feels incredibly subtle and natural. That said, Olivier Assayas is a creme de la creme director. I wonder how she comes across in a special effects bonanza like Charlie's Angel? Would I still dig her? I don't know... Maybe I'm scared to find out... Haven't seen Crimes of the Future. Sounds interesting. Other off topic topics: just finished Paris, Texas. I've previously seen The American Friend (masterpiece! A favorite: 10/10) and Wings of Desire (overrated: 8/10). This one felt more personal than those two. The beautiful lines breaking across each wide open space had me in awe every twenty seconds. I enjoyed the metamorphosis from quirky surrealism to buddy movie to understated ending too. At first I was questioning the lack of chemistry between the former husband and wife. I thought it was bad acting, which I always hold the director responsible for. Then I realized, that's the point: this guy doesn't fit with other people. He's sacrificing himself to bring the kid and mother together again. Pretty cool. I got some heavy Lynchian vibes, especially since Dean Stockwell (loved his grounded performance) is in this and Blue Velvet. Guess me, Wenders and Lynch all have something in common: we aren't cut out for fatherhood 🙂. Also, I felt like the odd couple scenario driving the movie's first half inspired Rain Man. My rating: 10/10. Haven't watched your review yet. Will do that next. Please watch French Dispatch soon. It's a gem that happened to come out when nobody gave a damn about movies. You owe it Wes! Lastly, are you excited for Beau is Afraid? Ari Aster has got skills. I don't think he's a great director yet, but I could see him making the jump. Hereditary owns the ten most disturbing minutes in film history in my opinion. Too bad it turned into a typical horror film for the second half.
Kristen Stewart is amazing in Crimes of The Future. She clearly understood the repression of the character and the internal conflict, and she nailed it.
Kristin Stewart was indeed excellent in _Crimes of the Future_ , and as you mention, in the stunning _Personal Shopper_ (and to a lesser extent in _The Clouds of Sils Maria_ ), and I did like her in _Spencer_ , which was more unsettling dream than biopic. As for Lynchian, it's strange that musician Lana Del Rey released a new album just a few days ago, and there's a song on it with the title "Paris, Texas." I say strange as I've always found her music to be Lynchian, that off kilter, slightly disquieting Americana, so it's like a happy confluence of some of my favourite things.
Great show once again, agree on many of the actors/actresses mentioned. You had me pause your video and look up the Crimes of the future trailer by Cronenberg, I vaguely remember that coming across my radar will have to check it out now as it looks interesting with a good cast. On Leto, really had high praise for him in the early 2000s as I thought he was great in Requiem for a Dream and such a ground breaking film for that time, he was ok in Blader Runner 2049 with a small role , I just love that film anyway, wow! But the cult leader/god like thing is a bit over the top! But I still try to separate the artist and the art! I want to thank you, a few weeks ago you offered me a prize and I could not seem to IM you or get anything to work to claim prize and not for lack of trying, (don't ask or try to figure out) technically challenged or something😕lol! So thank you, I did subscribe to your channel and my real prize in the great content you create!!!
Absolutely everything you said is 100% for me. The Rock (charismatic), Jared Leto (good actor with a serious problem of self perception). Kristen Stewart (hit and miss, but committed to participate in interesting movies and explore, I love her), Jamie Lee Curtis (excellent actress but her Oscar for EEAAO seems more like a sympathy vote for her career), Pedro Pascale (good actor and likeable, but in WW1984…awful). Laura Dern (unforgettable in Blue Velvet) James Dean (incredible actor, but clearly from another era, his style is extremely melodramatic for today’s standards, still a legend).
I can't agree with Jared Leto being a good actor, dude is kiss of death for Any movie, even 2049 which is my favourite movie of the last decade, he totally s hits the bed
@@starwarsroo2448I think he has some fantastic roles, but recently his behind the scenes behaviour has become gimmicky and irritating. Ever since that Oscar, his performances have tanked. He thinks he got an Oscar because of his method acting antics, rather than the performance we see on screen. Now he’s been exposed as an all round weirdo who makes his costars uncomfortable and is involved with underaged girls. Gross. I hope his career dies off soon.
What you stated around 11:49 about Jered Leto is the same way I feel about Johnny Depp, thanks to his Capt. Jack Sparrow roles. Although I will admit, his performance as Whitey Bulger in 2015's Black Mass redeemed him for me in a major way. What do you think?
I love Depp’s performance in Murder in The Orient Express. Intense, nuanced, despicable and believable. It’s one of those instances when he shows his real talent. Black Mass was amazing.
I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, in my honest opinion, that Meryl Streep is so overrated. This woman could wake up in the morning, go to the bathroom, take the biggest diarrhea dump of her life, go into her kitchen, make herself a cup of coffee, make herself a bowl of cereal, and by the time she's done with all of that, there will be an Academy Award, a Tony, an Oscar, and every other awards in existence waiting for her on her doorstep. Maybe not the trophy but sure as hell a nomination. She's been nominated 21 times for an Academy Award, 15 for BAFTA, 32 Golden Globe nominations, 18 Screen Actors Guild nominations, I swear this woman sneezes and gets nominated 😅.
If anyone says “The Mandalorian” is Pedro Pascal’s best role obviously hasn’t watched Narcos where he was in his element without even saying much ever on camera.
I think there’s a difference between actors who are overrated and actors who are over exposed, there can be some overlap of course. I think Zendaya is a fine actress, she hasn’t been in many roles, apart from Euphoria that show some range. I think she’s over exposed so people hate her performances but she’s not overrated. In terms of overrated, I personally choose Bradley Cooper. I just never believe his performances and he tends to be outshone by his costars. I love silver linings playbook though so it might just be because I don’t like his other films or the characters he plays.
Again overrated to me means that someone is being consistently hailed as skilled beyond their actual talents. For example, I would like to see examples of critics etc praising Dwayne Johnson as a great actor? Not as a star or likeable or whatever. But please give me an example of an established critic claiming he was a great actor? Same for Kristen Stewart. I personally enjoy Laura Dern and James Dean I think of more as a movie star icon. He wasn't around long enough (IMO) to know whether or not he would have become a decent actor. The others I am not familiar with.
Mr Nobody is when I really started noticing him. Requiem for a Dream (I think the script & directing was the biggest star - acting was good, but not the star).
i totally feel you on Kristen Stewart!! she was great in crimes of the future. and I feel you on Pascal!! he’s amazing in the right role, having his Jude law/Gerard butler overexposure moment- good for him. Also love Laura Dern especially in Lynch’s work. She was great in Big Little Lies too. James Dean is like a vibe- it’s like that x-factor/star quality/‘it’ thing. yeah leto seems to be like out of touch
If you have ever seen Dwayne Johnson, or "The Rock", on the mic at WWE improvising the most ridiculous thngs live without breaking character, you would know he's a great actor for sure. Range doesn't make an actor great. And he does have great range. Dude has so much charisma, that he carried the WWE on his back for years. A natural talent as an actor or entertainer.
I couldn't believe that comment said he had no natural charisma. There's a difference between saying you don't enjoy something and just denying the actual reality. Charisma is the entire driving force behind his career. He may not be Meryl Streep, but that's where the excessive charisma comes in and makes him entertaining. Though I'd have to disagree about The Rock carrying WWE on his back. His high point coincided with a high point for the company in general. Steve Austin was a major figure when The Rock was still a major star on WWE, and Stone Cold was one of the most popular wrestlers in history.
He needs a movie like “The Wrestler” to really see what he’s capable of as an actor. Until he is given a different role & fails in that role I can’t say he doesn’t have range.
@Half-Baked Movie Podcast it can make an actor great, but it isn't necessary to be a great actor. Buddy Holly is a singer with 1 octave, yet he sings diverse songs and styles. Lots of actors do great work within a small working range.
8:37 if you want to see an amazing performance from Dern go see Smooth Talk. A truly beautiful, dark, hazy kind of coming of age tale. Few coming of age films about women match it.
Dwayne Johnson.....is an entertainer. He's not an actor. Kristen Stewart is a good actress. She's gotten so much better than her first movies.... it's simply ridiculous. Not overrated at all. Pedro Pascale is a good actor. Like it or not.... he's good. Laura Dern and Jamie Lee Curtis.... both are great actresses. Jared Leto..... has never been that good to begin with.
Dwayne Johnson has his moments, but no in the big movies he's done. Hobbs and Shaw was a wild ride with an excellent performance from Johnson. Kristen Stewart is becoming a better actor now that she's more comfortable in her own skin. Her off-beat movies are where she's the best. Laura Dern is finding her roles in the latter part of her career.
Kristen Stewart is hands down my fave actor under 40. But I get that us Americans raised on whizz-bang special effects wouldn't find her interiority compelling. She's not for everyone and doesn't have to be. It's just rare to see an actor take the time to think on camera.
You should make another video dedicated to the sopranos it’s the best show of all time and deepest characters on television they don’t make shit like this anymore
@deepfocuslens - I just found your channel and am really enjoying the movie reviews. I tried searching your Channel for a specific movie but came up empty handed in search results. With that said, Can I request a Movie Review of the title Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man?? Great Channel :)
I think Mark Ruffalo is overrated. He has played dramatic roles and comedic roles, but he doesn't seem to have a strength. So many actors have overshadowed his performances. It doesn't even seem like He's learned anything by working with these great actors. He's also in Scorsese's most forgettable movie, and I think Ruffalo is a big reason why that movie is forgettable.
Not sure why you're only surprised now; I've felt the video gameness, inconsistent and convoluted world building, and law of diminishing action returns thing since the first one.
When Dwayne Johnson was 'The Rock' in 1997-2000 all his wrestling interviews were legendarily funny. Easily one of the best entertainers on the mic. (Having said that I've never watched any of his movies.)
Pedro Pascal is so succesful because women absolutely obsess on him. He has got that rugged dangerous look but also comes across as almost fatherly. He is like Tom Hanks in a way, he just shows up on set and acts like Pedro Pascal delivers his lines and it works. There is a lot to be said for that.
Christoph Waltz, who often overacts, is overrated. Good example is 'Big Eyes', where his performance was grating enough to take me out of the movie. Even in Tarantino's IB, where he generally does well, the scene where he says "Bingo!" sounds too cartoonish. However, I liked him in Spectre, where he avoids his mannerisms; and maybe he was good in Carnage as well (I no longer remember).
off top my head worst performances that come to mind: - Antonio Banderas. in recent mall robbery & money laundering movies. - John Malkovich. awful moments in Mile 22, going through the motions. has others too like Clear Present Danger. - Janelle Monet. Homecoming was good, but her performance was pedestrian. - Adam Driver. Marriage Story was good, but his performances are usually very bland. his character in White Noise was one of worst I can remember of last couple years. that movie was torturous.
To me overrated means an actor that's not very talented but gets many jobs. An actor thats good who gets many roles ain't overrated. Imo Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot are very overrated.
But they're really attractive.
You true 😌🤭
I can't ever recall anyone comparing either of these two to Merryl Streep or Kate Winslet or Gary Oldman, etc. so I don't know that I could call them overrated. They get lots of work I suppose because they are extremely attractive and do a decent job in certain roles. That may be frustrating but its not being overrated in my book.
Overrated means someone that is decent or good at their job overall, but they get too much credit. Nobody is rating Cavill or especially Gal as being great actors. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are overrated.
Robert Redford
Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose, Jurassic Park, A Perfect World, October Sky, Novocaine, The Master, Wild, 99 Homes, and Marriage Story just to name a few. Laura Dern is awesome in everything except Star Wars and Jurassic Park sequels.
Inland empire is a underrated movie she was great in. Another david lynch movie
Nicely stated!
when was she in star wars
Inland Empire too
THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing up Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman.
Yeah my goodness, WW1984 was so incredibly bad. Such a childish movie, even for Superhero standards.
Also, technically his performance being weird/ not working is not his fault but that of director Patty Jenkins. I'm not going to blame him.
Watch him in last of us…He’s phenomenal in it…WW1984 was just a train wreck of a film, and a huge jumbled mess…Can’t blame Pedro for bad material
Very true, I think the actress that plays Sam outshines her in the Scream movies and I thought Wednesday was trash.
She's pretty hot though ngl. She's easy on the eyes.
I’ve seen someone compare her to Jennifer Lawerence like sis please
To be fair, Audrey was a little overrated as an actress as well, lol. (And I love Audrey, she was a great movie star, cool person, and was great in many movies). Watch "The Children's Hour" to see her get out-acted by Shirley Maclaine!
nah
I think people who haven't grown up in Mediteranean families can't really appreciate just how right Brando was as Vito Corleone. He reminded me of so many people in my family that I was certain he had to be at the very least Italian. It's uncanny.
He was so talented and versatile actor. Unique one and still relevant until nowdays
I believe he was of polish descent
He's considered one of the greatest actors who ever lived,in case you didn't know...that opinion is from people who know acting, like other successful actors
@@RaySierra yes he was the most influential actor of the century.
Zendaya is phenomenal in this show called Euphoria.
Not by me! Totally agree. Love DeNiro but he was a snorefest in an otherwise great movie. Liotta and Pesci were the ones who carried that one.
Laura Dern in Wild at Heart is what Juliette Lewis wishes she was in Natural Born Killers
I disagree that Juliette Lewis was mediocre in NBK (if that's what you're saying).

Zendaya is very overrated to me. When she’s in a show or movie you never see the character you only see her. She gives the weakest performance in “Euphoria” her characters never have any depth and all she does is squint her eyes at the camera and forces the emotions.
Also, she's not very good looking. I don't care if this seems mean. But it's true.
Come she's amazing in Season 2.
I dont understand the hype with Zendaya

I think it mainly comes from Gen-Z guys that want to @@@@ her but I agree.
Now I’m itching for a whole 1 minute RUclips short of you doing a Kristin Stewart impression 😂 3:50
@@scoutwithoutclout don't forget titanic!

I’m so glad you had nothing bad to say about laura dern, I agree she’s one of the great actors of our time, love her so much
David Lynch brought out the best in her.
She's humble as well, judging by my one encounter with her, wherein I saw her leaving a screening with Alexander Payne and told her how much I loved "Citizen Ruth," and she immediately pointed to her "Ruth" director to give him all the credit- class act.

Check out Kristen Stewart in a movie called Speak. Very understated performance, and she was perfect for the role. It's a very lifetime movie kind of plot but I really think it's a hidden gem of a movie. Liked her a lot in Panic Room as well.
I liked her when I saw Into the Wild. She was great in Donnie Darko too
Yeah I agree. Considering how young she was in Speak it's a very good performance.
You tube has a lot of his television performances
James Dean was an actor, who became a star. He wasn't the Monkees, he was The Kinks.. His best performance was in Giant.@@thelegendarymvg7807
Also, 🗣Holla @t Aubrey Plaza yo. I've only ever seen one movie of hers, but she was adorable whenever I saw her on Letterman
Pedro Pascal is great in a 2018 indie film called Prospect. Really surprised me. Also Laura Dern in Smooth Talk is sublime
Little known James Dean fact: he played the Frankenstein Monster in a high-school play called Goon With the Wind. There are images online.
In later years, the play would be nicknamed Rebel Without a Brain.
The worst type of poor acting occurs when the artist disappears up their own orrifice. Self consciousness can affect any performer from Meryl Streep (in The Deerhunter) to Madonna (in everything she's been let loose on)
I thought Meryl was really good in that one.
I agree with you around 7:10 about Pedro Pascal's performance in WW 1984. I really think he was miscast for the part. The wig and the accent made him seem odd.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie for me
did you change the camera quality? it looks pretty great love the content as usual
Re: Kate Hudson...................I'll sum it up: SHE CAN'T ACT TO SAVE HER LIFE! (And how the hell was she nominated for Almost Famous??).
I've watched countless clips of Jurassic Park and Laura Dern often seems genuinely terrified. Great acting.
She was banging in that movie
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that pretentious " Leonardo DiCaprio is overrated" line.

Moreso than most of his films, I think the themes in COTF are meant to finish baking at home.

DiCaprio is overrated. Pedro Pascal is actually a good character actor. I saw him on stage once doing Hamlet. That is always a sign of an actor.
Dwayne Johnson is a movie star not an actor...like he doesn't try to be a thespian.
Kristen Stewart was brilliant in Clouds of Sils Maria. She won a César for that performance, and should have been nominated for an Oscar.
She was great in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper
I really though she was great in "Spencer"
She was good in Speak.
90 percent of actors or actresses nowdays
You guys still watch movies?
If an actor dies young, they always get way too much credit for their acting chops. Heath Ledger, James Dean, and Paul Walker are three examples of this
He actually was very good in Ballers on HBO…he stretched into the character and showed us he has more capability and complexity within him
The thing is I don't understand why Pedro pascal is famous. He does not have one famous role, I just know by name. I guess executives just like him, he's a good actor but his acting doesn't justify getting jumped on every adaptation.
People loved his character in game of thrones
Kristen Stewart is great in Spencer. My favourite performance from her
One word: Adventureland.
As a veteran of the Twilight Fandom Wars, I ride hard af for the Kristen Klan

Agreed about Stewart in crimes of the future. They way she spoke was so singular and mysterious

His style was pre Brando. He brought the realism to acting.
I said the same thing about Curtis. She was barely in it.
I can't agree with Jared Leto being a good actor, dude is kiss of death for Any movie, even 2049 which is my favourite movie of the last decade, he totally s hits the bed
The worst is one is when Jared thinks he is killing with his method acting. Bruh he takes himself too seriously.
@@starwarsroo2448I think he has some fantastic roles, but recently his behind the scenes behaviour has become gimmicky and irritating.

Now he’s been exposed as an all round weirdo who makes his costars uncomfortable and is involved with underaged girls. Gross. I hope his career dies off soon.
There's a distinction between " Pulling Power" and " Acting Ability" also typecasting plays a huge role..
For Pirates level money I would also wear mascara and braid silk into my hair

Please do an UNDERrated actors series.
Jared Leto received a well deserved Razzie for House of Gucci.
Mr Nobody is when I really started noticing him. Requiem for a Dream (I think the script & directing was the biggest star - acting was good, but not the star).
Dwayne Johnson did have charisma and star power, its just he never found his James Cameron or Paul Verhoeven to take him to the next level.
Ironically - I think the best performance someone ever got out of him was Michael Bay with Pain & Gain
@@erectopatronum6750 watch Snitch - he’s fantastic in that - easily his best dramatic role.
i totally feel you on Kristen Stewart!! she was great in crimes of the future.
and I feel you on Pascal!! he’s amazing in the right role, having his Jude law/Gerard butler overexposure moment- good for him.
Also love Laura Dern especially in Lynch’s work. She was great in Big Little Lies too.
James Dean is like a vibe- it’s like that x-factor/star quality/‘it’ thing.
yeah leto seems to be like out of touch
You forgot to mention 3 more overrated actors:-
1. Vin Diesel
2. Vin Diesel
3. Vin Diesel
I feel like Jared Leto plays Vincent Gallo.
WAS JUST THINKING THIS EARLIER TODAY YES
8:37 if you want to see an amazing performance from Dern go see Smooth Talk. A truly beautiful, dark, hazy kind of coming of age tale. Few coming of age films about women match it.
Leto should have been fired from "House of Gucci." Embarrassing performance.
one answer for me: Christoph Waltz.
I cannot stand him. He ruined Django for me.
Matthew Mcconaughey, Brad Pitt. Vanity actors with more stardom than talent.
Alright alright alright
Brad Pitt is forgiven for giving us Mickey.
@@EagleBeagle4886 Really? I thought that was another shallow gimmicky performance with a ridiculous accent like he used in The Devil's Own.
I was able to engage and enjoy Snatch bc I accepted that they were all cartoon characters
Plus I have a brother named Tommy that is awkward.
Heath Ledger, in The Dark Knight the dude just licked his lips for 2 and a half hours.
Kristin Stewart is so talented. I used to think she sucked but she’s great to me now.
James Dean was only in a few movies before he died. He surely would have grown into something even bigger.
How the second part of this video came 7 months before the first part??
Kristen Stewart is hands down my fave actor under 40. But I get that us Americans raised on whizz-bang special effects wouldn't find her interiority compelling. She's not for everyone and doesn't have to be. It's just rare to see an actor take the time to think on camera.
You should make another video dedicated to the sopranos it’s the best show of all time and deepest characters on television they don’t make shit like this anymore
"Donald Trump-esque villain." Okay, that's why 1/2 the country doesn't go to the movies anymore.
Fantastic opinions, agreed with across the board on all your actors takes
Pedro Pascal was very entertaining in Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
I really disliked that movie, but I like him in Mandalorian & the Pablo Escobar netflix Series (can’t remember the name).
Agreed. He was hilarious!
@deepfocuslens - I just found your channel and am really enjoying the movie reviews. I tried searching your Channel for a specific movie but came up empty handed in search results. With that said, Can I request a Movie Review of the title Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man?? Great Channel :)
Timothée Chalamet for me. Seems like he only gets praised because he’s pretty
He was pretty wonderful in "Call Me by Your Name".
Dune was a fecalith.
Even the French aren't even into him: as it seems mainly North Americans who praise him so much.
Yeah 🤭
For me, Katherine Hepburn...she's from the school of Jimmy Stewart....no idea how people like them in anything.
The best actors were in the 70s....De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson have not been surpassed. No on compares with their talent.
I'm just going to make myself believe I convinced her to re-watch and review Shutter Island because of the above comment.
You have gorgeous hair 😊
Pedro Pascal is so succesful because women absolutely obsess on him. He has got that rugged dangerous look but also comes across as almost fatherly. He is like Tom Hanks in a way, he just shows up on set and acts like Pedro Pascal delivers his lines and it works. There is a lot to be said for that.
"He's become an idea instead of a person." Haha! So scathing and yet totally right on the money...
Jared Leto, Mathew Macauhany, Bradley Cooper, Merryl Streep, Tom Hanks....
I'm not entirely sure how to evaluate actors performance at this point ... even the lauded actors seem irritating in a certain light ...
Funny I immediately thought of Dean's performance in Giant too. Stomping great flick.
Jared Leto is one of those actors where I'm like, how the hell is that guy still getting work. 😲
off top my head worst performances that come to mind:
- Antonio Banderas. in recent mall robbery & money laundering movies.
- John Malkovich. awful moments in Mile 22, going through the motions. has others too like Clear Present Danger.
- Janelle Monet. Homecoming was good, but her performance was pedestrian.
- Adam Driver. Marriage Story was good, but his performances are usually very bland. his character in White Noise was one of worst I can remember of last couple years. that movie was torturous.
laura dern?!?! even in her one-episode kimmy schmidt role, she literally killed it
