Hi there. I recently Purchased a Spa Ozone Generator Aquasun XL-80 - and it has standard 3 wire AMP plug buy my spa is quite old and has the JJ plug. Is this something that can be easily cut, resoldered and heat shrink the wires. Are the colours all the same? Hope you can help?
Yes you can cut that plug off and solder new connections, but usually it’s easier just to crimp the JJ connectors. Most come with 3 wires, the ground wire should be the obvious green the other two wires won’t matter what the colors are because it won’t matter which terminals you plug them into. The ozonator is not polarized.
Hello, if I use the ozonator, I still have to use dichlor every how often? I also have aquafresh with silver salts! i need dichlor every time is i used the spa? thanks
Yes, you should still be adding a disinfectant to the water after every use. The ozonator can only do so much.
How long should a Hot Spot Watkins Freshwater III ozone generator last? Mine is 7 years old. I read on another website they expire? Should I just replace it?
Typically 1-5 years is an average life span of an ozone generator, however it is not unheard of for them to last longer. Easiest way to know is to pull the 1/4” line and do a sniff test. If you can’t smell the gasses anymore then it’s time for a new one.
My hot tub is tripping the breaker occasionally. I read somewhere it could be caused by ozonator? Is that right? I have a hot springs rhythm hot tub. I did have the water level a little too high - would that cause the ozonator to trip the breaker? How can I test the ozonator to be sure its working correctly?
It very common for the ozone generator to cause the breaker to trip, especially when it’s only periodically. However you mentioned that you over filled your hot tub too, thus can also cause some issues, but first let’s address the ozone. One indicator is when the breaker trips after a filtration cycle. Typically the HS Rhythm is preset for 2 filtration cycles in a day. The ozone should be turning on during a filtration cycle. You can double check this by testing voltage at the terminals. You should be getting 110-120Vac you can then test the actual Ozonator by removing the 1/4” line from the check valve and sniffing the line to see if it’s putting out ozone gasses. It has a very distinct, strong smell.
The next thing we will want to look at is your water level. We need to keep enough water in the spa that it’s flowing through the filter freely but low enough that it’s not covering any valves such as an air mixture valve or the waterfall shut off valve. If the water does get too high it can cause the jet pumps breather tubes to siphon water back and that can be dripping on your control box, causing a short circuit and trip the breaker.

Great question. It is a device inside of your hot tub that helps maintain cleaner water by neutralizing bacteria growth.
Ozone gasses are created when an electrical arch happens. The oxygen molecules (O2) is given an additional molecule (O3) making ozone which kills bacteria on contact.
