@runningtaters Alison won the Grand Master's Fiddle Championship -- so she's a fiddler first, a singer second! She actually started playing professionally in Tony Rice's band, The Tony Rice Unit -- played lots of this jazz-tinged "space grass" -- Tony took this genre to a high level himself, playing originals and standards, such as Nardis (Miles), Vonetta (Earl Klugh), Green Dolphin Steet (my fave), and My Favorite Things. Many others. Great, great music.
I don't know, but I've heard the same rumor. As you said, he's currently on tour with Dan Tyminski, but AKUS will be regrouping at the beginning of 09. Next year markes the 20th anniversary since the first AKUS album. Team that up with the fact that he's been on the road with Dan and Barry and I think the possibility of Adam joining in with AKUS could be real, even if only to celebrate the 20 year anniversary!
That "kid" is now in her mid-30's and one of the most successful artists of our generation. She has upwards of 20 grammies and a whole list of other accolades. She's still with Union Station, but they're on hiatus this year and are all pursuing solo projects. They will be together again next year, though. Alison is getting ready to kick off her tour with Robert Plant to promote their hugely successful album, "Raising Sand."
A diminished triad is R-b3-b5. A full dimished chord or diminished 7 is R-b3-b5-bb7(a double-flat seven which gives you the same interval as the 6. In C that would be an A. A minor 7th is minor 7th with a flatted 5th.
I love Tony Rice and Bluegrass in general but when you listen to those Gypsy Jazz guitarists from Europe (Rosenberg, DeBarre, Lagrene, Stephan)this actually sounds like it's a slow tempo. I'm not saying one style is better than the other but those gypsy masters are like magicians with their licks.
Good call BabaeLou. Just stumbled on to this one myself and the sentiments are the same. This is very motivating stuff. The BPM is also ridiculous. It looked like T Rice had to put some visible effort into the solo which is pretty rare. Rice can make it look so easy sometimes.
You seem to know quite a lot about Alison's contemporary music career, so I thought I might ask you. I've got the idea somewhere that Adam Steffey might re-intergrate Union Station when they all get back together for their next album, do you think there's any hope that it'll happen ? He's the former mandolinist from AKUS, and he's been playing with Mountain heart, at the moment he's part of the Dan Tyminski band I think. Let me know if you have any info.
See that bar running along the top with "Search" next to it? All you need to do is type something in there you want to see then click search and you can leave this "boring" video. That's the beauty of YT. You don't actually have to watch something you don't like then comment on how much you hated it below.
'We all know that jazz basically just sucks'? Um, no. You're entitled to the opinion that this music has strayed too far from its roots, so to speak, and you don't have to like it. But it does not follow tht jazz sucks, you may not like it, but millions do.
Man just the other day I started realizing I really love bluegrass now I just cant stop listening to it.
david grisman is one of the finest mandolin players ever. his taste is impeccable. and obviously skills! he is the friendliest monster ever.

Jeez!! Tony Rice can play! And most people completely overlook Alison Krauss' virtuosity on the fiddle.
Thanks for the great video!

this was also the theme song of ron howards first movie he directed
They did recorded it MANY MANY years ago. The video is as old as hell!
Meltdown.

john petrucci of mandolin
I agree. While the picking is hot it isn't what I call hard core bluegrass.

Anyone else see Jd give the fingers haha what a man
Wow! So Bluegrass stands for virtuosity!
Hyper country jazz at its best! Bet these guys have to change strings a LOT!
@donnyaldridge You mean Jerry Douglas? If so Hell Yeah!
sounds really good. i didn't think i'd like bluegrass. are they actually improvising their solos?

Stumbled across this video and seeing your comment from 13 years ago. Wouldn’t a Steffey reunion have been nice?!
HAHAHAHAHA YES! fucking genious man! fucking yes! AWESOME!
It has a very "speed metal" feel to the song structure and tempo. Add a little distortion in there and they would have a whole new audience.
This would probably sound great as a rock song.
I don't know, but I can tell you I was!
I'm seeing a lack of banjo solo. But other than that, these guys are badass.
Jd was like im too old to solo on this weird grisman tune

Does Alison fiddle much these days? I haven't seen it.

I'm sorry: A minor 7b5 is just what it implies. A minor 7 with a flatted 5th. Or C minor half diminished 7.
