Ivanchuk does not have a chessboard. Other GMs too. For their level, the chessboard and pieces tends to get in the way of their fucus. Such irony. Chessboard and pieces are a distraction to calculating chess plans. They have a rather efficient board in their heads

With the top players, it's because they've played the game for so long that their mind has been trained to remember positions from their games and countless studies and other games they've seen.
