    A good balanced review!
I used my 200-500 for couple of years and loved it on a D750 and I was happy with it on my Z8. I traded it for the native lens last week mainly because I now photograph fast moving greyhounds and found the zoom too cumbersome to track them running towards me. The first thing I noticed is that the new lens is it is noticeably lighter and that, coupled with the fast zoom action and better focus tracking was enough to justify the upgrade.

The 180-600 doesn’t need a focal length lock like the 200-500 because it’s an internal zoom and pointing the lens down won’t make the focal length change. I was going to pull the trigger on the 180-600 but instead a superb condition 500mm f/4E FL popped up for just a few hundreds pounds more so to me it was a no brainer. I knew I’d be using the zoom at the long end mostly, where it’s f/6.3 which is a lot slower than the f/4.

I had the 200-500 which I used on my D800E. I always thought it was a little soft at the long end and a bit slow. Thinking the D800E might have been a factor I got a Z9. It was a bit better but the zoom ring rotation end-to-end and the size when fully extended with the FTZii weren't ideal. I traded the 200-500 for the Z100-400 + 1.4x which I really like. I thought there might be a glut of 200-500s on the 2nd hand market reducing its trade in value so I traded it asap. The 100-400 is a very versatile lens but I may still get the 180-600 next year as a more specific wildlife only lens. Thanks Kon and Becky for your continued offering of useful reviews.

Hello Both, I think both these lenses are great. I only have one issue with either of these lenses (This is only due to medical issue I have) that is they are heavy lenses. For me just that one issue. Both are well priced and the reault I have seen are spot one. Thank you for all your great videos.

Really hard to admit, but with the introduction of the Z8 and the new superb Z mount telephoto lenses I feel like the F mount got completely obsolete. At least for enthusiast \ professional wildlife work.
I shoot with a D500 and a 300mm F4 pf and finally decided to move to mirrorless and not invest more money into F mount. For astrophotography the Z8 with the 14-24 or 20mm prime is also a killer combo.
The only reason would be to stay with F mount is the discounted prices on the used market.

Great comparison between the two! If you hadn’t put which lens was used on the static shots I wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference. Both are sharp. Thanks for sharing with us! 📷☕️

As a 200-500mm owner for a couple of years is see the 180-600mm as a slight upgrade for zooming internally, shorter throw zoom, lighter, and of course faster auto focus, but as you said th 200-500mm is a great budget option especially used, which isn't currently an option for the 180-600mm.

Great comparison guys! Thank you! I currently own the 200-500 and use it on a Z6ii and Z50. I have had the 180-600 on back-order for several months and was beginning to waver with impatience. Your review has shown me that the native mount lens probably has greater longevity with the Z-system cameras, so I have been convinced me to just sit tight and wait my turn!

Great comparison, thanks! I sold my 200-500 a while back, in anticipation of the 180-600 which I'll be ordering in early 2024. It's exactly what I hoped for, and will surely be a best-seller for Nikon.

A very useful comparison, thanks. I will certainly be keeping my 200-500. It can't take full advantage of modern AF and subject detection, and it's a bit more cumbersome, but I'm OK with that. I'd rather simply have the reach, the bit of zoom, acceptable sharpness at 500, and pretty good bokeh, which I got for a good price.

I would like to see a comparison between 180-600 and 150-600 tamron G2
I'm planning to use it with a Z6, and I'm wondering if the new lens is not a overkill for the Z6

What a timely video! I've been considering a 200 - 500mm lens to use with my Z 7II. Loved all the information from the comparison. Now I'm leaning toward the 180 - 600mm. Thanks for all you do.

Just got the 180-600 last weekend. Ordered it July 5 so it’s been a wait. I never owned the 200-500 but instead used a Tamron 100-400 on D7500 and now using the 180-600 on Z50 and Z5, and initial images look great. I’m impressed how sharp the lens remains through its zoom range to 600. Viewfinder looks very steady handheld with VR as well. I do notice that the viewfinder image will jump a little between photos with the mechanical shutter blackout on the Z5 and Z50, but the result image still looks sharp. It is a little awkward handling with the Z50, and I noted the Z50 is too light so the combo doesn’t balance on the tripod collar, but surprisingly the Z5 does. Nikon needs a chunkier Z80 ;)

Great video, but actually the comparison that I have been waiting for is between two "modern" Z Mount lenses, the Nikkor Z 180-600, and the Tamron 150-500 Z Mount lenses.
Questions that I have would be that on the Sony E Mount version of the Tamron 150-500 lens, the max frame rate for their higher end cameras (A9, A9ii and A1) is limited for 3rd party lenses. Has Nikon done the same, or can the Z8 & Z9 shoot at full speed? Can the Tamron exploit all of the Z8/Z9 AF features & modes? Are the weight and size differences significant in practical use?

I am waiting of the delivery of the 180-600. The 200-500 F-mount was not quite good enough for my uses. I already had a 500mm F4G and I still have it. I have however sold all my F_mount cameras and lenses except for the 500 F4G. The 180-600 has some features that have made me rethink my approach to variable aperture zooms. It is much closer to the 500 F4G in performance. Firstly the 200-500 was best at 500 but the 180-600 seems to be a very consistent performer at many focal lengths and offers me the flexibility of a zoom that is definitely good enough to partner the 500 F4G. Secondly, I now find that I really do need a much lighter lens for international travel. Thirdly, like the fact that it seems to have good image stabilisation for video. The improved speed of autofocus of a native Z lens for the Z9 also comes into play. I will keep the 500 F4G for at least another year to see how much difference having a slower aperture lens really makes. I also think that there 200-500 came out too soon for me to consider an alternative lens and the 500 F4G is showing its age a little bit. Have you noticed how a 4kg lens gets heavier as you get older?

I never had the 200-500 because I heard it was soft at the long end after 400 and it extends >> My new 180-600 I have only tested in the garden at 180-400 to 600 at fixed Plants from a distance.. Sharp sharp and it doesnt extend

Am I gonna be disappointed in picture quality if I now using Z70-200 with ZTC-1.4x, if I buy the 180-600??? 70-200 is f2.8 and only goes to 280, but I don't want to lose picture quality!

I doubt it. I use the 70-200 for closeup work and the 180-600 for reach. The image quality is excellent.
