In this video I take a weekend to freshen up an old truck. With minimal tools, skills and budget, similar results can be had with just a couple of days worth of work. Your vehicle can go from something you are embarrased to drive to something that you are proud of. It's easier than it looks and fulfilling. Every paint job is different but here are some steps I took to paint this truck.
Step 1: Figure out how in depth your paint job will be. There is such a large spectrum with painting. You could spend a couple of months and a couple grand or you can spend a couple of hours and less than $100.
Step 2: Figure out what primer/paint/clear you will be using. Make sure the base chemicals are compatible.
Step 3: Acquire supplies; Paint kit, paper, plastic, tape, sand paper, wax & grease remover, rattle can spray adapter, additional tips with a wider fan pattern etc.
Step 4: Stop second guessing yourself and get in there. You will be surprised with your results no matter your skill set.
Step 5: Remove everything you can in advance(lights, bumpers, mirrors..etc)
Step 6: Wash your car really good with a degreaser. I used Dawn dish soap.
Step 7: Fix rust or desired dents.
Step 8: Sand entire vehicle with 320ish to prep for primer. You just have to scuff the paint for the new primer or paint to stick. Scuff pads are also an option. (Wear protection!)
Step 9: Wax and Grease remover
Step 10: Tape everything that you don't want paint on including the floor, nearby cars, exhaust tips, the frame underneath.
Step 11: Tac Cloth, Primer(optional), then sand again with 400-600 grit.
Step 12: Follow the cans direction. Light coats recommended. If you burned through to the metal while sanding, make sure to prime with self etching primer before you paint so you can get maximum adhesion.
Step 13: Clear(optional)
Step 14: Wet sand/buff(optional)
Step 15: Stand back and enjoy your hard work. Thank you for watching and happy motoring!!!

Those D21 Navaras were such weird and cool utes. Nice work on extending this tidy examples life.
They were very interesting. Thank you!
Excellent transformation. They'll write books about you.
Haha, thanks
I could feel your exasperation when that bug landed. Good job, and a good video!
You just get in the zone and something like that can throw you off haha.
Great job truck looks really nice those are sweet little trucks. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun enjoy
Thank you!
Nice trucks, agreed, however I'm a fan of the 521 series Datsun/Nissan trucks. I love them the most!
Que bonita quedó tu Nissan!
Muchas Gracias!
Great job
Thank you!
Very nice job it looks great 😎
Thank you!
Me gustaría ver también la limpieza del motor buen trabajo 👍
id kill for a set of fender flares for my d21
I didn't know they were that special, I threw mine away
@conservation garage Well done on the restoration! Now I know what mine will look like as I have the same truck and looking at doing a paint job on it this next summer. What color red did you use? Like I said I have the same truck in the same color. Same year too. Thanks for your time.
Thank you! I'm sure yours will turn out great. I believe I used the rustoleum sunrise red.
Just goes to show you a straight truck with a little bit of a love in a little bit of money and you can make it look great again.
Exactly! With limited tools/skills/money/time, you can still make something pretty good.
Maybe I'll try that. I'm afraid to wash my 26 yr old hardbody because the original paint will come off.
Haha! That's awesome. Sometimes they look good in a nice dirty patina. Good luck giving it a go. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
First thing I would do is get rid of the fender flairs on this truck. They aren't needed. Fender flairs do nothing but hold moisture and helps rust out the fenders and the bed.
Here in AZ, we don't really have to worry about moisture or rust.
@@ConservationGarage It rains there doesn't it?
@@danbasta3677 It does rain in AZ.
@@danbasta3677 You dont understand. It rains like 5 times a year for like 20 minutes then its back to dry hot weather. Water doesn't stick around.
How many tins did you end up using????
Hey Pat,
I think I used about 6-8.
Tins??? What in a world is a tin?
Looks bad AZZ. What product did you use to wash it?
I used Dawn dish soap and then a wax & grease remover. Thank you for the comment.
Do the motor while it’s running!!!
Hi Joshoua,
I should have added a clip of it running but I no longer own it.
you should clear coat it
Thank you for the comment. I am thinking about it. Might give that 2k stuff a go. Any recommendations?
PLEASE!!!!!!! GET RID OF THE FENDER FLAIRS! Fender flairs will only hold moisture and rust out your truck. I know, I took them off of my S 10 which was also a 4 wheel drive truck to, and now I have a Dodge Dakota regular cab 4 wheel drive truck and got rid of the fender flairs. Looks better without them on both trucks, although I no longer own the S 10, however still have the Dakota, and I'm glad to not have the fender fairs. Please take my advice, PLEASE! The fender flairs will only hold moisture and rust everything out for you. Besides, when they were off, the truck looked 1,000 percent BETTER without the fender flairs on it.
