The crafting, economy and commerce side of that game deserves a series of essays by itself. In 20 years that I've been playing MMOs I have yet to find one that would have the same level of freedom as the original SWG.
I miss that MMO every day. I would get back to it in a second. I did try a few private servers but it just wasn't the same. I had a Master Entertainer and my guild an I would tour the different cantinas playing and dancing for our fans. And we had a lot of them. We had even composed a few songs with the few musical cues that were available from each instrument. My main character was a Twi'lek, Tolad Der'wec, and there was one song I would play every night that earned my a lot of tips, Tolad's Lament.
Yes I did a similar thing, remember how we could custom build moves, flourishes - macro script dance and lightshows? Really, really interesting class the Entertainer - have yet to find another MMO that had a class like it. It was an amazing time, we became information brokers as well as we could relay info about hunting areas, Rebel, Imperial activities etc. I do miss it : )

It is Insane the List of Things you can say about SWG that would still make it a really stand out among MMOs today and of all time: 1) SWG had the biggest MMO world of any MMORPG i ever played. Just walking across one planet take hours and there was like 9 planets. 2) The best player housing and stores ever. Many different house styles, sizes, extreme customization to interior and decorations, and you could place your home almost anywhere that was not claimed. You could set up NPC vendors in your house(s) and some essentially turned a large buildings into a Mall with different rooms for different items. 3) Entire player built cities, there was even a 'governor' class who administered the city and player city votes. 4) The best/most intricate crafting ever; so much so there were entire jobs/classes based on crafting. Armorsmith, Weaposmith, Architect, shipwright. 5) One of the most interesting class systems before the revamp; a job system that allowed extreme diversity 6) An impressive hero class system with Jedi that was like a very difficult to unlock Hardcore mode; perfect in that it prevented Jedi from being too common. The requirements to unlock Jedi were to master certain professions but it was random which ones so it wasn't a straight forward grind. 7) An amazing Bounty Hunter system where you could accept missions to track down and fight player-Jedi characters. Jedi were a bit OP but only they suffered XP loss on death so it balanced out and it felt very lore/world appropriate. 9) Some awesome faction pvp mechanics like being able to buy faction NPC soldiers to follow you around (like an AT-ST as empire) and place faction bunker bases using faction rep points that would spawn/be guarded by faction NPCs. The bases would be permanent until destroyed and guilds would fight battles in attempts to destroy or defend bunker bases. Seriously SWG had only 2 real weakness: 1) It's combat system was very clunky with 3 different resources pools and class balance was very poor 2) Not much PvE endgame content
As a long standing Veteran of SWG, unlocked 2 Jedi. I can tell you why. John FCKING Smedley. First they hit us with the Combat Upgrade (CU), THEN they hit us with the New Game Enhancements (NGE). They revamped the game twice on us, stabbed us in the back over expansions and lied to all of us and because of that they lost their playerbase practically overnight. A lot of people only experienced the NGE and not the glory of what the game originally was, and to those Johnny Come Latlies, you really missed a hell of a fun time. That being said, SWGEmu is still alive and well and you can play the original game still to this day. (Not to mention there's plenty of other servers to choose from) NOTE: A lot of the footage here is mixed content between the 3 eras. You initially could not start as a Jedi, you had to go via an elaborate questline to even get the CHANCE to unlock Jedi for yourself. As a Jedi you had to "hide-in-plain-sight" as this is post Order-66, the Master Bounty Hunter players could pull your bounty if you were seen by humanoid sentient NPCs or Players using a lightsaber and/or force powers. Initially if you died your character was perma-dead and you became a force ghost as jedi was an extremely powerful "class" but it was later changed so you would lose force-XP instead.. thing is it took a LONG time to grind out the force abilities, so it was a decent balance. Also for reference: 3:14 This is Pre-CU (OG SWG) and at 2:00 this is the NGE they're essentially 2 completely different games. Pre-CU was turn-based, NGE was a point-and-click shooter-esque game. There was a LOT of missing information in that video. No mention of the expansions, CU or the Trials of Obi Wan fiasco. To do a proper video on SWG you need at least 30 minutes.
I did play the game Pre CU. And I agree that NGE was a disaster. But people really need to take their rose tinted glasses off when it comes to Pre-Cu. It had several flaws. Even for the time. Especially the combat. Which the devs admit was completely rushed and mediocre. And the lack of basic things to do. Even Everquest and Ultima Online had quests and more dynamic mobs than SWG. The game wasn't perfect and needed an upgrade which is why both the Combat Upgrade and NGE were made. They were both just done very poorly.
Does anyone rember SWGFaces? was like an OG social media just for fans before FB and Myspace... i was a freshmen in HS playing the game, but the friends and experiences i had during my time with the game really left an impact on me. Pre CU SWG was everything, and yes i am still salty that they ruined SWG.
CU was better, pre-CU was pretty bad and most complained about it until it changed. They probably got used to afk gaming. NGE did ruin the game, that was a disaster. I'm laughing at you thinking pre-CU was turn based. You could either A) make a macro for combat and AFK B) upon starting to fight a mob, hit the same one button 20 times and then sit and watch
I unfortunately wasn't able to get the game when it first launched. Our computer couldn't handle it, and when we did get a better pc to play it, they had already shifted it from pre-cu to the combat upgrade and for me at least, the CU wasn't too bad. It was still pretty diverse and unique with the skill-trees and everything. I unfortunately was forced to take a break from the game for about six months. I had been working on unlocking Jedi (which I think you should do a video of!) and was like 3 months away from finishing the quests in the village when I was forced to take my break and when I returned it was the NGE and it pissed me off so much that all of my work went for nothing and the kick in the gonads was what SOE gave to the Jedi who had unlocked prior to the NGE (A 'unique' Master cloak, a lightsaber color crystal of your choosing, and an Elder Jedi title). I played NGE for a little while but I couldn't get into it any more and I was still aggravated at SOE for the change in the first place so I quit, then came back during the last year or so before it shut down for good. Made a few good friends on Starsider, I played an Entertainer but I never picked up a combat profession ever again. I was too stung by them getting rid of TKM and Combat Medic :/. I have also played quite a few of the SWG EMU private servers and had a blast doing it!
Pre CU was and still is waaay over rated. The nerd factor of the meta was off the chart and 60% of players were afk grinding. The pvp was a slog of over buffed so a duel could last up to 20 mins. It was a niche fanbase of super meta nerds and min maxing resulted in everyone looking like a red robo cop. It was not good, they had no foresight it was a company running alpha experimental gameplay on their customers. Im going to get heat from pre cu fans for this but they were a niche crowd. The CU was actually great but i excelled at NGE pvp. Yea i was one of the detested target audience but i played all versions, CU was the best imo after i saw a creature handler almost beat a jedi and my smuggler had a special called last ditch that could kill a jedy, the lower your health the more dng it dealt and we had feign death that we could opt out of the fight with. But the NGE smuggler was awesome, pistol whip was a knock down stun, and call a friend generated an NPC who was a medic, there was an item that called 3 troopers so that combined with call friend suddenly opponent is facing 1 player and 4 NPCs, the medic healed both player and NPCs. The nge smuggler had inside info that would tell him or other players how much bounty they had and we would charge like 5k for that. I was A viscious spy but smuggler was way more style.
I’d love to hear about both of the video ideas mentioned here. The Jedi in SWG have a long, messy history that I’d love to hear your take on, and I have’ve heard much about the initial failure of SWTOR that cause it to become free to play.
I was in early Beta for SWG. The player cities and crafting options were like no other game ever made. I went up every tree at some point, but my favorite was my Droid Engineer/Creature Handler.
The top two mistakes I remember that Star Wars galaxies made was: giving everyone two holocrons for Christmas 2003 and the combat revamp. Everything after that was just a avalanche of mistakes.
@@Euruk1 yea the CU wasn’t bad, but it just opened the door of “we need to revamp xyz “ and that’s the problem. I played until shut down, but when WoW came out in 2004 I remember my whole guild dropping galaxies for it. I still played, cause I got a firespray fully built in “Jump to Light-speed”… and the space combat/exploration was fun
"You were the chosen one" ~ (obi wan kenobi) The Greatest sandbox game ever created. When I played this game to me it did not matter that being a Jedi was hard to achieve because the rest of the game was so much fun. Im still very salty that it shut down for SWToR and I think there would be a place on the shelf for SWG CLASSIC in these modern times with other Classic MMo games doing so well.
RIP my jabba fighter it had pre nerf components, i still mourn its loss. It soloed star destroyer and destroyed fully crewed YT1300s. It was unmatched in CQC backed up by a master shipwright alt.
everytime you have a new video, I tune in! I really love your possitive attitude and how much you seem to love what you do man. Keep it up! Nothin but love and support for you brotha!
I will never forget when Julio Torres said they wanted to make the game more Star "Warsy". Search it you'll find it on one of those IGN G4TV interviews. I spent my entire High School years playing that game, loved it. Then John smedley tried to say welcome home to SWG fans with the launch of H1Z1 crap game, he said something like "you can come home now" as if zombies or H1Z1 was ever going to make up for what swg was. Just terrible such potential...
The biggest reason that SWG died/failed is the update that introduced the class system like so many MMOs had at the time which drove a massive wedge between the player-base, those that preferred the old skill-lines/trees felt like they got cheated out of all the skills and customization they spent hours grinding for and maxing, while others found the class system to be the much better system. Which also why most if not all SWG emulators these days use the skill line-tree system instead of the set class system, cause they know that it's the much more beloved system.
OG Star Wars galaxies was **** amazing. It was one of the first MMOSI played right after final fantasy 11. And I think right around the time I started playing Warcraft, it was a nice change of pace, you know, as opposed to, you know, magic and swords and **** like that. It was sci-fi with a bit of mysticism and magic and laser blades. I mean, it was just, and the combat was so much **** fun. You could literally hold down your right click button, and you would just do these amazing jedi moves. It was **** great. And then they decided to change the combat. I remember loving everything about the game, and then it just **** seemed to vanish and crash overnight. I mean, I still play Star Wars, the Overpublic, and I still love it and think it's awesome too. But galaxies was its own kind of special. The classes you could be, you didn't have to be a combat class. You could be a **** pub. musician, I mean, there was a lot of cool **** to it that had so much **** potential, and it was so sad to see it go. I've been looking for private servers to see if anyone still had any up anywhere, but haven't had any real luck. And I think I found one, but it wasn't really compatible for some reason with my operating system, so wouldn't play properly. And I was too lazy or too busy to just even really look into fixing it. But I digress.
Combat Upgrade makes me still cry. Please do a vid on the Jedi questline! I never did it! As always, great vid, dude! (EDIT: speaking of dead MMORPGs, do you remember Tabula Rasa and would you consider doing a vid on that? I thought it was a great game but was very much too....WoW'd up. But it had potential!)
SWG sold a world not a game. that is something MMOs forgotten about, building a world not a threadmill, eve online is the perfect example of world > game
to add; the Bounty Hunter being broken at launch and taking a long time for them to fix was a huge problem too, and there were no jedi for a while for the jedi missions. then the CU hit and killed a lot of what made it special, and the NGE was the straw that broke the camels back.
Mainstream modern MMORPG players could not survive in an MMORPG like SWG without a ton of hand-holding.Thinking of that period of MMORPGs just imagine the outcry if they introduced the original dead penalties found in EQ and AC into ESO or WOW. And the tantrums from so many over the rarity of becoming a Jedi in pre-CU SWG.
I actually dont think the NGE destroyed the game and I played since launch. My favorite update was the CU, But both the NGE and CU made the PvP better.
SWG was released way too early. The game was the most laggy and bug filled MMO I have ever played. Plus the only way to get XP was to grind mobs over and over again. The mission terminals were lacking and leveling was so boring. And after grinding to max and having your template ready, there wasn't much to do in game. Sure it had some nice systems, but I can only theory craft for so long. If there is nothing fun to do with your character there is no reason to play. It's no wonder WOW came along and killed it.
NGE was not the downfall, CU Combat Upgrade is what caused a mass exodus. People left and they shut down most of the servers. NGE was what sony tried to get people back after they had destroyed it. They ended up only making it worse. There is/was nothing like swg.
Yes I remember, I was there at the betas and retail release, I still to this day miss my entertainer, was a really engaging and interesting class. Star Wars Galaxies was not a failure, it was driven into the ground by one man Raph Koster, tons of forum posts begging him to change the economic model, resource distribution model, MMO design models etc. We were resource starved - whole planets had nothing because super guilds soaked up all of it. Raph was so busy jerking off to spread sheets with his religious worship of his simulation, he was hell bent on the design that if you just get his simulation just right then the whole SWG MMO would effectively run itself. The entire thing was a scam by him. After all the anger and pushback by the community SWG continued to decline by the time Raph Koster finally left -WENT OVER TO DISNEY to spread his shit show excuse engine model, too much damage was done by him to recover. Yes the MMO format became dominated by Blizzard, hopefully we will see changes in the near future where we can have some variety, I still head back to Old Republic from time to time but Electronic Arts has done a lot of damage to that MMO as well sadly. We love the Star Wars Universe! It is very sad so many are so hell bent on destroying such an amazing story and place to be. Seeing them so furiously destroying the past that made it all so great. I am grateful for the Private servers, I hope that some day we can get an official one with revamped graphics for SWG.
SWG didn't shut down in 2011 because it was dead. In actuality, the game had been gradually gaining more players over the previous 2 years. It was shut down because Lucas Arts didn't offer to renew the contract, and since they owned the Star Wars IP, SOE had no choice but to shut it down.
I think an in depth series on this topic, would be epic. So many know not about this game. I was there in Kettemoor at launch. I was there until NGE. Then I came back to see them pull the plug. Had a crazy political upset when some rando tried taking our town. It got cut throat. There was bloodshed int he virtual streets by the end of that campaign.
Great game, loved every minute of it. Until the combat upgrade, then the final touch of making it a class game... totally ruined. OG game was best. SWTOR was great an is still good. Only complaint i had and still have is it should have just been a normal came with co-op not made as a MMO.
"Be whatever you want", sandboc MMOs will always fail, because, they only appeal to the "hardcore" a**holes. Despite how those a**holes see themselves, they are just a tiny, niche demographic. If an MMO wants to survive long-term, it has to offer play that's attractive to casual players.
"There was a catch: that you needed to have the original Star Wars Galaxies discs" official disclaimer. Is it true? Weeeelllllll...just take a second to look into the servers currently running. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Sorry dude, SwG is very much alive in 2023. On some servers there areas many as 27 species, new planets/zones, and new iconic professions. Don't be a baby playing Swtor, and NGE was just the EQ2 combat engine understand.
@@samsh0-q3a The playerbase was already bleeding heavily before CU / NGE were implemented. CU was an actual upgrade to PreCU and NGE was a weird knee-jerk reaction done to salvage it. However, NGE was still the longest running version of the game and by the end of the NGE it was the most balanced version of the game.
A game that still alive and thriving thru emulators even 20years later should let you know how good this game was.. still is.

I was
A viscious spy but smuggler was way more style.
I actually liked the CU. It was the NGE that I think just about everyone hated including myself.
@@XerocooYeah same. I quit not long after NGE.
Thank you so much for speaking about this long lost adventure!
"You were the chosen one" ~ (obi wan kenobi)
The Greatest sandbox game ever created. When I played this game to me it did not matter that being a Jedi was hard to achieve because the rest of the game was so much fun.
Im still very salty that it shut down for SWToR and I think there would be a place on the shelf for SWG CLASSIC in these modern times with other Classic MMo games doing so well.
I'm one who is back to SWG pre NGE....and I enjoy so much this unique MMO and not more the same.
RIP my jabba fighter it had pre nerf components, i still mourn its loss. It soloed star destroyer and destroyed fully crewed YT1300s. It was unmatched in CQC backed up by a master shipwright alt.
SWG was a niche MMO, when WoW launched SWG was already on the downfall. They took a risk and it failed.
everytime you have a new video, I tune in! I really love your possitive attitude and how much you seem to love what you do man. Keep it up! Nothin but love and support for you brotha!
Man I miss playing this game back in the day
I will never forget when Julio Torres said they wanted to make the game more Star "Warsy".
There hasn’t been an mmo that comes to mind that had such a good sandbox
The biggest reason that SWG died/failed is the update that introduced the class system like so many MMOs had at the time which drove a massive wedge between the player-base, those that preferred the old skill-lines/trees felt like they got cheated out of all the skills and customization they spent hours grinding for and maxing, while others found the class system to be the much better system. Which also why most if not all SWG emulators these days use the skill line-tree system instead of the set class system, cause they know that it's the much more beloved system.
You should try out some old school mmo's as well like Merindan 59. It would be nice to see these OG MMO'S flood up with people once again.
I never played SWG but as a Warhammer Online fan, I feel for those SWG players and fans
There is a very good private server where players from around the world play: warhammer reckoning. You should check.
Should of used footage from Swgemu pre-cu emulator server. It's basically feature complete now after 13+ years of development. Very few bugs left too.
SWG sold a world not a game. that is something MMOs forgotten about, building a world not a threadmill, eve online is the perfect example of world > game
SWG was the best MMO ever. What killed the game was making jedi a starting class and wanting it to look more like wow.
I acyually would LOVE to hear about the original journey of becoming a Jedi and what the NGE actually did to kill SWG,
There are only 2 mmos I'll forever miss. Vanilla and SW Galaxies.
This game had mechanics and gameplay that would shame even single player and mmo games of today
Man I miss SWG, still get on private servers every so often
I played from the Pre-CU days until the end. I still play on multiple private servers, some are really good.
to this day, the best crafting system of any MMO ever made.
to add; the Bounty Hunter being broken at launch and taking a long time for them to fix was a huge problem too, and there were no jedi for a while for the jedi missions. then the CU hit and killed a lot of what made it special, and the NGE was the straw that broke the camels back.
Never played them but excellent story telling my bro.
I would def like to hear about the Jedi grind.
SWG was my first mmo i joined after the NGE.
I still play it on Legends 😊 The day of the nge was brutal but became a great game the last few years on Live
SWG is probably more active than SWTOR right now
If there was ANY MMO out there that truly deserved to be turned into a remake, or a reboot, it'd definitely be SWG over Final Fantasy hands down.
Adding Jedi at all marked the beginning of the end for SWG. It was their first crucial mistake.
I loved swg back in the day! I would love to see you make a video on Earth & Beyond which was a MMO before swg or wow
If anyone wants to check out one of the servers, you have emu, legends, restorations 3 and I believe there are some others
I actually bought a copy last week.. its at the post office. The game is returning from the dead i hear.
Everyone watching this just completely ignore this video and go play SWG Legends, it's extremely active
i was in Galaxies, i loved bounty hunting
Were you there?
I got an old MMO for you to cover, DAOC - Dark Age of Camelot.
How to private service work how does someone create your own private server without the consent of the parent company?
I think an in depth series on this topic, would be epic. So many know not about this game. I was there in Kettemoor at launch. I was there until NGE. Then I came back to see them pull the plug. Had a crazy political upset when some rando tried taking our town. It got cut throat. There was bloodshed int he virtual streets by the end of that campaign.
It would be hard
@@neverstaydown3947 nothing worth doing is easy.
Greatest mmo there ever was and ever will be.
So Interesting!
It was the best MMO ever, still play it now and again. Restoration 3 is pretty good. Legends is NGE, so it's trash.
Hello you should speak about warhammer online. Fans keep playing it on a very good pserver
You clearly got curb stomped 1 too many times 🤣 the weak should fear the strong.
There are private servers for SWG out there now so if you ant to see what the game had to offer
galaxies was so cool you could have a rancor as a pet...
I loved SWG.
I played this game.....man....good times
The NGE destroyed the game.
Yea lol , lucasarts really was rough near its death
"There was a catch: that you needed to have the original Star Wars Galaxies discs" official disclaimer. Is it true? Weeeelllllll...just take a second to look into the servers currently running. You may be pleasantly surprised.
We are still playing emu
My boi Pyro getting clout in a Nixxiom video?
More SWG!!!
The fact that you used footage of Guild Wars when talking about games copying WoW instead of doing anything original is mind boggling.
Sorry dude, SwG is very much alive in 2023. On some servers there areas many as 27 species, new planets/zones, and new iconic professions. Don't be a baby playing Swtor, and NGE was just the EQ2 combat engine understand.
Early WoW friendly? LOL!!!! Not for a lowly undead mage.
Mage is the easiest class to level in vanilla/classic lol
You don't know what pain truly is lol
Why are you showing post NGE and CU footage this is literally what killed the game
wow killed it. well and sony lol
I gotta say, SWG always looked boring and janky asf. SWTOR is much better.
Easy, SWTOR happened
Nope. CU+NGE killed the playerbase.
@@samsh0-q3a The playerbase was already bleeding heavily before CU / NGE were implemented. CU was an actual upgrade to PreCU and NGE was a weird knee-jerk reaction done to salvage it.
However, NGE was still the longest running version of the game and by the end of the NGE it was the most balanced version of the game.
but swglegends wasnt the first private server. swgemu has been around since 06 but i get what you mean.
Yeah let’s get a video on pre ce pre nge Jedi unlocking
Good video!
ah yes, private servers.
