Thanks to all you release anglers. I'm sure I'v caught some of your released fish, and I'll bet you've caught mine.

Excellent tip about smashing the barb down in your fly tying vise I ruined a vice once by using the tip not knowing any better till it was too late

i think somehing worth mentioning is that barbless also makes it safer for the angler (i once had a big hook embedded in me, and had to push it through, cut it off, then pull it out, barbless since then) but also can actually improve hook up on fish with hard, bony mouths like tarpon and esox

I feel like smashing a barbed hook is kind of a happy medium. The small bump left after smashing the barb seems to keep the hook embedded in the tissue of the fishes jaws better than a completely smooth barbless hook while still limiting tissue damage to the fish and being easy to remove. Anyone else get that impression?

I fish all barbless hooks and I feel as though the easier penetration results in fewer lost fish when played correctly compared to barbed hooks. Generally speaking once the fish is in the net and tension is released the hook usually comes out all on its own. I practice strict catch and release and the fish can be released healthier than ever. For those of you who don’t use barbless hooks I would strongly urge you to start.

I'm more worried about the barb getting stuck in my hand, but it also makes it difficult and more painful for the fish when you try to unhook them. My dad and I just bend the barb until it doesn't exist anymore.

Even as I keep sometimes, I still always go barbless.

I also do catch and release. You don't destroy your fly getting the book out with barbless.

I'm not sure that barbed hooks "help" fish to stay hooked. The fish does not want to be hooked in the first place. It certainly isn't going to feel "helped" in any way.
