I have to make only one comment. If the London was straight up winning every player would play it. And if it offered obvious advantage we would see it in every world chess championship. But guess what, it has been rarely played (as far as I know, I might be mistaken). And since a world champion, or a challenger for that matter, contesting the ultimate tilte in chess would play a line to gain as big of an advantage as possible, we can safely conclude that the London system doesn't offer much advantage for the white side. Whatever Gotham does he can't change that (and anyone for that matter). In chess justice and objectivity do exist. All those videos with titles like "How do beat the London/Sicilian/Caro-kann" etc. are inaccurate because if it was that simple everyone would avoid the specific line/opening. This is what is overlooked or maybe intentionally skipped in those videos. Moral of the story: The London isn't the greatest opening objectively, it may offer good practical chances for white thought and am not in a position to discuss this topic as I am not adequately informed, but it is not trash either. And do your own research.

Stockfish says that d5 is the only positive response to c5, if you let it run long enough. At depth 48 It's +0.21, while e3, dxc5, and c3 are all 0.00. The normal knight move is definitely bad, though, as Nc3 is -0.35. Interestingly, if you let stockfish run for black after d4 Nf6 Bf4, it says that c5, d5, e6, and g6 are all even (depth 48). It takes it a while to realize, though. At depth 14 it thinks e3 is +0.27 and it actually thinks d5 is -0.27. At depth 16 it thinks d5 is even worse, -0.35. At depth 18 it thinks e3 is the only positive move, with d5 have dropped further to -0.42. At depth 20 e3 is still the only positive move, though dxc5 is now neutral and d5 is only -0.06. It's only at depth 22 that it starts to realize that there might be something to this d5 thing, as all of a sudden it's +0.13, but e3 still beats it at 0.42. It's only at depth 24 that it starts saying d5 is best. Does any of that matter to humans? No idea. But at least it's evidence that all those pawn moves are at least reasonable options, not losing positions.
Well, I stopped using the web version and threw way more compute at it. On depth *50*, after 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 c5, stockfish says these are the top 5 moves: +0.24 for d5, expecting black to follow with b5 +0.09 for e3, expecting black to follow with Qb6 0.00 for c3, expecting black to follow with d5 0.00 for dxc5, expecting black to follow with e6 -0.28 for Nc3, expecting black to follow with cxd4 And, if I got the UCI invocation correct, it says definitely don't play Nf3, as that's -0.39.
Ngl i prefer the queens gambit than london system for a casual, its way more straightforward and you gotta be crushed only if he calculates precisely at 7 moves or more. London is weird but if you have it prepared it can be tough to deal with it, if you know how to refute the london then you quickly be comfortable and have opportunities to trick them in the endgame. That is what agad showed
@@debarunbhattacharya7794 I don't like 1. e4 because it runs into too many openings. You could run into a sicilian, scandi, caro-kann, french defense, king's indian, italian, spanish. With d4 you can just play london every game.

I played 3 games over the weekend with a good friend who loves the london. I won 2 games playing unprepared openings and sticking to positional advantage ideas.. the game I lost I tried to play Agads opening... moral of the story is that chess is a 2 player game and trying to use someone elses ideas is probably worse than just playing using your own ideas and understanding of the game...
I can agree with that. But a big part of the issue here is that the London System has tons and tons of lines that you would need to memorize. Playing based on positional knowledge, calculation and feel makes sense if you don't have hours and hours to devote to learning this one system.
I think the point of Agadmator's video is just to create an unusual position that puts white out of their comfort-zone of a solid setup with established and simple moves, because usually the london player is a beginner to intermediate player and just learn that move order "cuz they saw on a video about easy chess learning or something", and they just never faced that move and panic. I as a beginner play the london for this reason, but i try to learn and explore new lines for each side to be prepared in future games and most importantly to learn the principles behind those moves, i think it's a good way to improve my knowledge starting from a quite solid base and simple strategy
at 29:17 in agad’s vid white can move rook on h4 to c4 and that makes for some interesting play. Black must be perfect and there is a hard move to see here and unlikely black spots it. Whites a2 pawn can be very dangerous very quick. This is why london counters don’t work that well against white if you get down to this position especially in a blitz game. Not sure why he didn’t cover this.
Really good video, I've recently started playing the London System after discovering your videos, and very often my opponent doesn't let me develop properly, and this video has given me some ideas to get out of problems. Hey, I am 1500 rated player on chess.com and Before The way I had beated London system is by playing a opening symmetrical to london not exactly symmetrical but it is called as cholle system or something and I didn't know wht to do against london but what i accidentally found was quite powerful and gave me many victories but its not all powerful and people have beated me with london on my refutation. & My friend who is candidate master told me long back that getting rid of white light squared bishop was key to winning against London system and I have tried it out a few times and won. Anyway thanks for the video and I appreciate your efforts for showing the weak side of Anti London. Now have to be extra careful around the London system.

Loved this video. I'm a beginner and play the London as white a lot, because it's easy to remember (the sixties weren't kind) and gives me a good starting position. Oh, I should have used Stockfish 15 NNUE, not just Stockfish 15. That one knows that d5 is best already by depth 14!
Depth 14: d5 +0.30, dxc5 +0.24, e3 +0.02 (Nc3 -0.17)
Depth 16: d5 +0.31, dxc5 +0.20, e3 +0.19 (c3 -0.26)
Depth 18: dxc5 +0.25, d5 +.023, e3 +0.01 (c3 -0.26)
Depth 20: d5 +0.35, e3 +0.16, dxc5 +0.05 (c3 -0.22)
Depth 22: d5 +0.27, e3 +0.20, dxc5 +0.18 (c3 -0.05)
Depth 30: d5 +0.38, e3 0.00, dxc5 0.00 (c3 -0.17)
Depth 34: d5 +0.33, e3 0.00, dxc5 0.00, c3 0.00 (Nc3 -0.37)
Depth 36: d5 +0.40, e3 0.00, dxc5 0.00, c3 0.00 (Nc3 -0.51)
So it looks like it gets to about the same place, just NNUE helps it realize sooner.

0.00 for c3, expecting black to follow with d5
0.00 for dxc5, expecting black to follow with e6
-0.28 for Nc3, expecting black to follow with cxd4

Hey levy! Can u please make a video on castling - more specifically the intricacies (when to castle same side, when to castle opposite, castling too early/too late etc.) Thanks!
Battle Begins for London System's Reputation.
Levi woke up and chose violence
Wait,in 9:51 the knight is in position which it can kill rook but it is defenseless and the king can eat it
5:21 what is the difference between the two knight moves? Don’t they both trap the queen?
Hey Levy, bought your E4 New style, loving it....Played the london for a while and i have too be honest,i keep going back to it.This video is exactly why,now im purchasing your london video as well.I have ginger GMs from chessbase with the tool box for the london and its spot on,but with this video and your london vid,i cant wait to see what happens next.Great video, all respect to aga hes got a great channel but you just threw the gauntlet down....
my only question is is the "london" called so because it looks like an old english house with the bishop and knight being a chimney
Loved this video. I'm a beginner and play the London as white a lot, because it's easy to remember (the sixties weren't kind) and gives me a good starting position. The only time this is not true is when black plays an early c5 (hate that). This video gives me a whole arsenal to counter with. Thanks.
The fact that the last position also threatens a mating position is very discovery channel of you. Impressed on your deep dive analy-thesis.
Shots fired. When's the Gotham vs Agadmator match?
