  • Capture One 22 introduced native HDR Merge. The release notes suggest we use three frames - one properly exposed and two frames at ± 2 stops from properly exposed.
Join me as I evaluate their recommendation by merging different numbers of frames and levels of exposure bracketing. Does a three-frame ± 2-stop sequence work best, or do more frames or more exposure bracketing improve the results? Watch the entire 15-minute video to find out.
My videos and live streams demonstrate why I use Capture One for all my photo editing. They highlight specific tools or capabilities, compare Capture One to other photo editing tools, demonstrate how to manage catalogs and sessions, and help you past challenging situations. My channel is intended to illustrate why I recommend Capture One after having used other tools for nearly two decades.
I encourage comments and questions. I try my best to respond in a timely manner.

You indeed brought the evidence.. Good to see the recommended plus/minus 2 stops is the way to go..

It is only one scene and scenario, but others I tested had similar results. I think the highlights need much more aggressive mapping down during the HDR merge process so we don't have to be as heavy handed with HDR recovery.

In my testing, I found some halo artefacts both in specular highlights and in deep shadows. Exciting development from Capture One but I'm hoping it will be refined over time to perform better.

Hmm. I have not experienced this. Have you tested the latest 22.1 (15.1) update?

@@WalterRowePhoto Hi Walter. I'm on 15.1. The artefacts are usually appearing when I'm bracketing with Flash (Sony) - Better results when only using natural light, which I suppose, is to be expected, but still. Also getting green/purple fringing, which isn't appearing on the individual files, but perhaps this is because some automatic corrections are being disabled for HDRs. Will investigate further.

The common feature of this and indeed other analyses is that merged images are significantly over-exposed. I'd like to see the results of -1, 0 & +0.5 stops and -1, 0 & +0.67 stops to see if this gives and improved merge. However, I suspect the degree of over-exposure in the merged image is variable, depending on the actual dynamic range of the scene captured.

I have tested -2 and 0 and it still overexposed the result. We need more control but it’s a fair first release.

Hopefully by now you have downloaded CO 22 15.1 which is much improved in terms of retaining highlights. No additional controls, but better tone mapping of highlights.

Good start, but your analysis is incomplete. You should look at noise levels as well.

Good point. I just looked at the noise in the shadows and highlights. I saw no difference between the 9-frame and 3-frame sequences.

@@WalterRowePhoto Interesting. Seems like C1 is missing an opportunity to use additional information to reduce noise.

They have illustrated in Facebook groups that one can take multiple identical exposures and the HDR merge blend them well using the least-noise portions from each image to produce a much cleaner image. That may be beneficial for astrophotography, but certainly will help other forms of low-light imagery like night time / dusk city skylines and landscapes. I need to get out locally and try to capture some long exposure sequences like this and give it a try.

Thank you very much for giving such a well thought-out presentation about the upgrade of C1-22. I have seen other reviews that are contradicting your presentation. However, none of them has emphasized what you have kept reiterating about CaptureOne's specifics on how to capture one well exposed image plus two more images under & over-exposed images... No one is saying that. They are more emphatic about how bad the C1-22 new HDR and MERGE Features are...
Thank you for enlightening us on this issue. I normally use Affinity Photo for Focus Merge, HDR and PANORAMA Stitches. I use a Light-meter in order to achieve the absolute best exposure that I can get and then I Bracket Left and Right accordingly. I have a hard time comprehending why photographers feel that they need a volume of photos for an HDR shot which is highly likely to to be displayed on FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM or a Web Browser...
So it's nice to know that if I so choose that C1-22 can fulfill these needs...
    Great video!
    Cheers!

Thank you for the positive feedback! It is important to stress HOW to capture a proper sequence for HDR Merge, or for any shot for that matter.
