DAMN, I can't remember what year I did Monitors for the Tubes in Europe. It was the first European tour. It was when they had Prarie on Drums and Mingo Lewis on Drums and percussion. All the crew was waiting for the Tubes to arrive from America. We had the whole stage setup at Sheperton Film Studios south of London. Day three, the last day of rehearsals, they arrived. We had time for one run-through. I had never heard of them. They started in ..... First song, my eyes got real wide. For the next two hours my adrenalin kicked in. Disbelief and awestruck best describes my feeling. They finished the set. I slumped into a chair .... EXHAUSTED. WOW, what a fuckin band. They sold out every show. They added in 7 more shows at the end at Hammersmith Odeon in London. The very last show on the last note they dropped paper money (not sure dollars or pounds) from the heights of Hammesmith Odeon, so as the house lights came up it was raining money. They took Europe by STORM. Europe was their real home.
Eric, it had to be 1977. Tour started in early November, and ended at the Hammersmith the first week of December. How great that you got to do that run. What a time!
Amazing live shows. Saw them 6 times from '76 -'77, then again on the "She's a beauty tour". Changed my entire outlook on music. I must see them again before I die.
I'm a follower for 30 years now , and I 'm still trilled and amased. Sorry about the written words here , I 'm Norwegian. I Love This Guys , And so do my wife.
Saw the Tubes last night at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. The band was very tight, and the vocals pretty good, considering these guys are in their 70's! R.I.P Rick Anderson, Re Styles, and Vince Welnick. There will never be any greater performance than those this band delivered in '76-'77, with all of Kenny Ortega's brilliant choreography!
We used to see The Tubes play at the Town and Country Lodge in Boulder Creek. CA when they first started. Remember some really odd looking saxophones or something. That was 40+ years ago.
Is that the same Q from the Q guitar that hangs in Prairie's studio now? Big fan, my real first concert in Santa Cruz at the civic in 78 or 79, WOW! Love Them Tubes........Keith Graves.
I saw them at the L.A. Sports Arena (The Runaways with Joan Jett opened). It was by far one of the greatest concerts I've ever attended. There were costume changes and pyrotechnics, a marching band from Compton, and even an aerialist on a trapeze above the audience. The medley of Don't Touch Me There and Mondo Bondage was epic!
Great show. Was really great to be there. Incredible sets, great musicians. Alas, the sad part was that it was the last time I went out with my girlfriend of 5 years. We gone to a lot of Tubes shows. One of our favs was the Winterland show with the Turtles on the bill.
I don't care about the crappy video . I love the Tubes of the 1970s . They were A&M records experimental out in left field' house rock band" . A&M paid for all the dancers and other hanger ons , the low budget props . They had song writers along with the Tubes song writers. What most people don't know is that the Tubes were doing satire of "the me generation" and doing parodies of glam rock - Fee Waybill's Quay Lude Personna, makeup and extremely high platform shoes is one example of poking fun at glam rock . Even White Punks on dope was not a pro drugs song , but compassion for young drug addicts . What do you want from life is really a condemnation of the me generation and their selfishness, dog eat dog rise to the top to acquire material things like swimming pools . Now when they signed with Capitol records they were more commercial and the tubes made a lot more money . Under capitol the wrote songs like Talk to Yah later, she's a beauty and so on which gave them commercial radio air play and they sold a lot more albums and the band deservedly made a lot more money . around the late 1980s guitarist Bill Sputnik Spooner had enough and quit for good . But he gave the band a sophisticated recording studio when he left . nothing against the other guys but i liked Spooner the best . for the past 30 years he plays only acoustic guitar and teaches at a co-op or something school. He wrote a very sympathetic and moving song about the stresses put on women who work very hard in their careers . He plays some gigs by himself and with his son along with teaching guitar .
I have seen them. I have several of their albums. The 1st album the Tubes. Young and Rich and The Tubes Live! Hard to explain them to someone who is not familar.
Pearl E.Gates of Pearl Haorbor and the Explosions was onstage! Singing backup I guess. I must have missed that back in '77, just noticed it now. Isn't the internet a wonderful thing?
I saw them open for Led Zeppelin in 73 at Kezar Stadium and Fee was wearing this same costume. I was wasted on acid and they freaked me out. Those boots. Thanks for posting this vid. They look so mundane and comical now, but at that moment, in acid world I thought they were truly Satanic.
Saw them do this on their Outside Inside tour at the Kerrisdale Arena in Vancouver. As the band did an extended intro Waybill came on stage in a straightjacket. He was laying on the stage thrashing for a couple of minutes before he started singing. It was a great show in front of maybe 2000 people. A few years later I saw them in at BC Place in front of about 50,000. They were the opening act for David Bowie. That kind of venue wasn't too good for them.
at first i thought waybill so soooo fuck up he cant stand up ..lol but i think he was just trying to navigate those 12 inch pumps that kept crumbling on him ..lol
The Palace of Fine Arts is the one of the only remaining structures (and the largest) from the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Next to the marina and the Presidio, by the bay. It was built to house artwork at the expo, but it remains in use for exhibitions, wedding receptions, conferences, etc. The theatre is just under a thousand seats, and a nice hall for concerts. I saw the first and the last shows of the Tubes three week run there in 1977 (April 12 thru the 30th). They were so amazing.

eric chipchase They were brilliant musicians with a sense of humor rivaling Zappa's. One of the greatest shows I ever saw.

So effing awesome. Saw them at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in August 1983.

To this day I am a tubes fan.
I have met all those freaks of musical knowledge!
We used to see The Tubes play at the Town and Country Lodge in Boulder Creek. CA when they first started. Remember some really odd looking saxophones or something. That was 40+ years ago.
great post raw and real. great sound
A well known bassist here in Australia played me the first album in the 80s and I was hooked ever since.
Just saw these guys last night at the Coach House for New Year's Eve. Incredible. This band just keeps getting better.
Is that the same Q from the Q guitar that hangs in Prairie's studio now? Big fan, my real first concert in Santa Cruz at the civic in 78 or 79, WOW!
Love Them Tubes........Keith Graves.

Saw 'em at the Atlanta Fox back in '77 I think. Great show! My buddy from college and I decided to drive over last minute.

Go Quay Luden Go!!

The Tubes are awesome and everything, but they played at a "Fine Arts" hall? The Tubes weren't really known for being the classiest folks.
The Palace of Fine Arts is the one of the only remaining structures (and the largest) from the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. Next to the marina and the Presidio, by the bay.
