- Tristán White and Sharon Crawford visit Alexandra Park and talk about the history of Alexandra Palace, from its grand opening in 1873 to its rôle as an internment camp during World War I, it's relevance to the history of television and the BBC in particular, and its dreadful fires. We talk about how it got its name, and what the future may hold for it, if the council get their way.
Do check out www.saveallypal... for a history of the campaign to stop the council from selling the Palace off to become a casino.
In this episode I mention the Ballad of Kurt Engler, by Maggie Butt. You can read it here, and buy her book of poetry at this link: www.maggiebutt...

The lyrics to "Television", the song sung by Adèle Dixon on the BBC's very first broadcast in 1936, are:
A mighty haze of mystic, magic rays
Is all about us in the blue.
And in sight and sound they trace
Living pictures out of space,
To bring a new wonder to you.
The busy world before us is unfurled --
Its song, its tears and laughter too.
One by one they play their parts
In this latest of the Arts,
To bring new enchantment to you.
And by your fireside you'll sit,
The news will flit,
As on the silver screen.
And just for entertaining you
With something new,
The stars will then be seen.
There's joy in store, the world is at your door,
It's here to pass you in review.
Conjured up in sound and sight
By the magic rays of light
That bring television to you.
lyrics: James Dyrenforth - music: Kenneth Leslie-Smith.
Fascinating insight into the history of Ally Pally, I realised that I knew nothing about it! Thanks!
Thank you! There's more to come next week about the Palace.
I really enjoyed that . Thanks for sharing that. Keep them coming !
Try and stop us :-)
Really well-written episode with a whole cavalcade of interesting facts. Keep this up!!
Very interesting. I knew Pink Floyd played there in a sort of be-in circa 1968. Just brought here via darts (eurgh!), realising I didn't even know where the Pally eas!
hello mate, we bukmped into each others this morning, thanks to the crow. Claud
On your way up the hill from the station, you should have looked at the old ROTC bunker built for monitoring of nuclear attack during the cold war. It's tiny and not much to see, but really spooky.
Thank you for that! A missed opportunity!
@@LoveYourLondon When you're standing by the bench at 0:55 you're right in front of it!
@@bertspeggly4428 LOL no idea! We're going to be in the same vicinity when we get to cover Bounds Green next year (or shortly thereafter). So we could potentially go back there as "something we missed". If you know anything else interesting of this ilk in Bounds Green/Bowes Park area do let us know!
Rebuilt in 2 years??? Yeah right. Absolutely totally utterly ludicrous. Anyone with building knowledge knows this is IMPOSSIBLE
It didn’t fully burn down. It was a part of it. (At least the second time )
