    “All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost;
    The old that is strong does not wither,
    Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
    From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
    A light from the shadows shall spring;
    Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
    The crownless again shall be king.”

    Being that calm and in control ... yeah he knew he was the biggest rock star in the world holding the audience in his hand; this was Led Zeppelin at the height of their powers. The collective eyes of the rock music world were on Madison Square Garden for that three-night run in July of '73.

    When I was a freshman in college in 1975, my English class professor gave us an assignment to select a poem that gave some kind of personal meaning and to write one’s interpretation of it. The lyrics for Stairway to Heaven was on the inner sleeve of the Led Zep 4 album and seemed very much a poem to me, so I selected and wrote my interpretation of it. Got an A on the paper with a note at the top that said “Interesting choice”. Thanks Daniel for helping me to relive that memory and for your excellent analysis of one of my favorite songs.

    Stairway To Heaven was originally written and recorded on two different of Page's guitars a 12 string and 6 string acoustic and when recorded his 6 string Led Paul for the lead. In an interview with Guitar Player magazine Page said he didn't own a double neck guitar until Zeppelin recorded Stairway and he realized to perform it live he had to purchase a double neck and the rest was history!

    One of the greatest rock songs of all time. You're right they do play it kinda slow but you get that extra guitar time in there to make up for it. Up until a few years ago I never saw them live either until I came across this video and I grew up in the 70's. That's what's great about RUclips. There's a lot of groups like that who I never saw before until RUclips came along.

    When I was in middle school I had a really cool music teacher. She would have us listen to songs that are now classics and have us dissect and give our interpretation of the lyrics. This song was one of them. I think there were 25 students in the class and we all had a different interpretation. The teacher said that's the beauty of music and talent. All of our interpretations were correct and made perfect sense. These guys were in their early 20's when they wrote these lyrics! The song is a complete masterpiece! The music builds as if you're actually climbing the Stairway to Heaven. Depending on my mood determines my interpretation at that moment! When the paths of these 4 guys crossed - pure magic!

    All that glitters is not gold.....Robert Plant was a great lover of Tolkien, if you did not already know that. The Battle of Evermore draws from that...as well as Ramble on. Robert Plant has spoken about the meanings behind this song......as being something “quintessentially British and almost abstract” ......and the parts about nature are “about the coming of Spring....life renewing itself” life returning...”a Spring Clean for the May Queen”. The May Queen is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years in England where the arrival of Spring was celebrated on May 1st. A young maiden was chosen to be the May Queen. .......”There’s a feeling I get, when I look to the West, and my spirit is crying for leaving”......Robert has been a gypsy most of his life.....until just a few years ago...his heart always desiring to move on, literally and creatively. 🙄THE SHIT ABOUT SATAN IS JUST THAT...SHIT. Robert has sAid that the lyrics don’t mean anything like what Americans try to make it out to be. So many Christians in America tried to make Zeppelin out as Satan worshippers, which was ridiculous. Jimmy Page was fascinated by mysticism and magic for years, but was NEVER a worshipper of the Devil. And the rest of the band was never involved with his fascination.

    The guitar is a Gibson EDS-1275 it is a 6 string and a 12 string. Jimmy page needed a 6 string and a 12 string to do the song so what’s better than 6/12 double neck. I should add he needed a 6 and 12 string to play on stage (not I the Studio) and he didn’t want to keep changing guitars. If you watch the 1973 concert “The Song Remains the Same” when he plays “Stairway to Heaven” he only has milliseconds to change between the 6 and 12 string.

    Apologies if you've read this before. When I was a young lad in Epsom, Surrey, England I'd be waiting at the bus stop to go to school (I'm 76) when Jimmy the guitarist here, walked past me everyday with his guitar on his back. When he got to school he'd be made to leave his guitar outside the classroom. He was known in the town for being a great guitarist and if you were lucky he'd give you lessons. He was in a local church choir, went to a local art school, and was a boy scout. He was the scout leader of a good friend of mine. Epsom by the way is where the Derby is run every year, a big horse race, and note it's just called "the Derby". Has no town name in front of it as it was the first "derby". Epsom was also famous for it's salts !!! Hope that was interesting.

    Men and women alike watched Robert with their jaws open......charisma off the charts. Even if you do not wish to officially react to them you owe yourself the pleasure of watching them live. Definitive live performances you can find on RUclips are Royal Albert Hall 1970, Madison Square Garden 1973 ( the performance that makes up the movie The Song Remains The Same...which if you haven’t watched yet, DO IT), Earl’s Court 1975.....a Whole bunch of bootlegs like Blueberry Hill and Japan 1972......Knebworth 1979...(which is good, but the band was going through very difficult times then, and to me, it shows) and then the marvelous reunion one-off concert concert in 2007 which they KILLED. They went out to prove something and show people why they were the best, and they did just that. A performance for posterity. And John Bonhams son Jason, channeled his dad’s spirit that night and played so well........If you react to nothing else live, I would urge you to at least do Since Ive Been Loving You and Whole Lotta Love from MSG 1973, In My Time of Dying Earls Court 1975, Achilles Last Stand from Knebworth 1979 and Kashmir from 2007 the Celebration Day concert at the O2 Arena.

    Something for you to consider regarding "her Stairway lies on the Whispering Wind"
    "The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
    Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper."
    1Kings 19:11-12

    Re the Hobbit, this was the first “serious” book I ever read. I was around ten years old and it did have a profound effect on me at the time. As is almost always the case, the book is far better than the film. The visualisation I conjured up in my head even at that age could never be properly replicated on screen. I've always enjoyed the story of how they got their name. Because, of course, it involved The Who's drummer, Keith Moon. "The story goes that Page was keen on creating a new supergroup with Moon, Jeff Beck, and Moon’s bandmate in The Who John Entwistle. Moon remarked that the project would go down “like a lead balloon” and the legend began to swirl. Not happy with the punitive power of a balloon, Page and the group went bigger and added Zeppelin." Since lead is two words, to be lead or to lead, they dropped the a from the word. And, a supergroup was born.

    The original expression is, "Not all that glitters is gold" (I think it's a moral from Aesop's Fables). Meaning, don't get fooled by attractiveness.
    The Lord of the Rings poem reverses it with, "All that is gold does not glitter", meaning, what is valuable might go unrecognized, it could be cloaked in the ordinary.

    Spirits Crying for Leaving could also refer to the Grey Havens; in which the Elves leave Middle Earth to journey to, and for which Bilbo wishes to join his friend Gandolf. By the end of his journey; Frodo also longs to leave for the West.
    Two Paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on. In Disney's Original series; Marvel's Loki, there's a line that states; A good person is not 100%, and a bad person isn't 100% bad. Meaning; you can also change what you are doing, and make things right, or destroy all you created.

    The “bustle in your hedgerow” lines I always took as the “disturbance” in your inner thinking, ie you are evaluating what you’ve been taught and the path you are following (in this case the path of materialism shown by the girl buying her stairway to heaven). The “don’t be alarmed now it’s just a spring clean” part is the resetting or the perpetration of resetting this thought process to one that follows a more righteous, or spiritual path. I don’t know if it’s right but it always ties the whole thing in for me. This is empathised with the last line “to be a rock” as in to be stable and dependable, while “and not to roll” represents someone who does not have this stability, ie the girl who is following the path of materialism.
    As for all the backwards “sweet Satan” stuff, for me that’s a load of old hogwash. There was a similar case with Judas Priest regarding backmasking and it was proved in a court of law to be false. Priest were on trial because two boys tried to commit suicide (one succeeded) when they heard supposed subliminal messages when they spun the record backwards. Honestly it’s almost certainly a non-starter. Imo similar to the whole Dark Side of the Moon and Wizard of Oz thing.

      James Stuart do you want to know what Plant actually meant by those lyrics, or would you rather keep your own interpretation? I’m serious. If you want to know what he meant, I will happily supply a link to an interview where he speaks about those very lines. Sometimes Zeppelin was deep and metaphorical.......sometimes the lines can be taken at face value. It might be a generational thing here: My generation was always taught to search for what the writer actually meant when he wrote a lyric or poem or play or novel. We were taught that there actually WAS a definitive meaning. If we wanted to add our own meaning on top, well OK. I think, from what Ive read, younger generations have been taught that it doesn’t matter what the writer meant....the opinion of the student or reader or listener...YOUR opinion....is what’s most important. A completely different way of looking at creative art forms. So that’s why I ask if you want to know what the writer of Stairway meant by those lines.

      Helene Spaulding I’m happy for you to send me the link, I’m also of the opinion that it’s preferable to know the true meaning as intended by the artist rather than your own interpretation. I was always under the impression that Plant had never openly discussed the lyrical content though. I might be getting that mixed up with American Pie though, I know it’s one of the two

      James Stuart well.....it’s just that line specifically...”bustle in your hedgerow” because so many people are curious about it. The entire interview is about 12 minutes and is pretty funny, but if you want just the explanation, skip to about 10:30. Robert also speaks about the general meaning of the lyrics during the FABULOUS interview he had with Dan Rather on Rather’s Show The Big Interview on AXSTV in 2017. It’s in reruns and it’s great if you like interviews with fascinating musicians.... here’s the link ruclips.net/video/omxnvpis7Xc/видео.html

      James Stuart he has never gone through it line by line. His lyrics are often deliberately vAgue and abstract....he doesn’t wish to reveal too much of himself I think...being an intensely private person...so opposite of his stage persona.

    • @jameshunter7303
      @jameshunter7303 4 года назад +1

      Helene Spaulding he explains it as the beginning of a new season but you have to look at that in the context of the wider song - so for me that still ties in with my interpretation regarding how it is the beginning of a persons new outlook. And the “don’t be alarmed now” is testament to that as change is often hard especially ones that require a whole new outlook and an acceptance you were following the wrong path. Looking online it seems to be a common theory:
      "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May queen." Very poetic again, and very British. Some translation is needed. In rural England the hedgerow is the line of shrubs denoting the property line between your estate and the next, so a "bustle in your hedgerow" means something is changing in your life or your mind. The May queen was chosen by a village to represent youth, beauty, newness, and hope for a better future. So this line boils down to "if your old ideas start crumbling, don't be alarmed, you have new and better ideas forming in their place." It's also possible that the May queen is another reference to the lady, though significantly changed in her ways.” flyinbrianrobinson.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-meaning-of-stairway-to-heaven.html?m=1

    If you are a fan of Led Zeppelin, there is a band you DEFINITELY need to hear. Unless you already have. They are not a vintage band but they were heavily influenced by the classic 70's rock. Their name is "Greta Van Fleet" three brothers in their 20's and a drummer not related by blood. They are incredible .I know you have certain criteria of who you listen to ...but trust me here....this is one you need to listen to whether you do a reaction or not ..You won't be sorry ! "Highway song" would be a great one to start with .

      headrushindi most people my age get pissed at Van Fleet for their obvious copying of Zeppelin’s sound......although Van Fleet claim it’s more Aerosmith.....but we know Zeppelin influenced Aerosmith, so there you go, but I for one think it’s GREAT that Van Fleet is keeping hard rock alive. My generation wants rock to revive and then get indignant when it sounds like our favorite band. Well, Zeppelin will never perform again, so if we want that music to LIVE past our lifetimes and be embraced by a new generation, then we should be thrilled that such a band has come along to carry the torch. Robert Plant has said, tongue firmly in cheek, that he “hates” the singer....but actually he thinks he’s great. If Plant can wish them well, surely we old Zep fans can too? My only complaint with Van Fleet? Just stop denying that Zeppelin is your greatest influence. Just own it and say you are keeping rock alive. They’d get much respect for that.

I can't think of anyone better that Led Zep to admire and gain inspiration from. Their sound though vocally may be reminiscent ..the music is far from it . At least in technique . They are uncommonly talented fellas. Jake's Guitar style is very unlike Jimmy Page's . Jimmy's influences were people like Scotty Moore , Johnnie day and the like . Heavy 50's rockabilly influences but Page created something new with the sound. Jake's Guitar style from Fleet, is based on a 70's mosh Posh of influences with a bit of a harder edge , more of a flat picked power chord style. Their talent is undeniable. And they are taking a sound we love and are familiar with and doing something MUCH needed in the music industry right now. headrushindi I agree...,and it is mainly the vocals sounding like Plant that I referred to. The vocalist certainly doesn’t have the charisma and stage presence that Plant did, but that kind of testosterone driven rock isn’t PC anymore anyway.....I think the only place that’s still acceptable is in very heavy metal...where the majority of the audience is male anyway. Yes' Steve Howe would often play two guitars over the course of one song, one over his shoulder, one on a guitar stand. Chris Squire also had a double necked bass.

      In a bit of Yes lore I hope I'm remembering correctly, Howe used over a dozen different guitars in concert. I've often thought tht getting used to playing a guitar on that stand must have taken a lot of practice. Howe is a collector of guitars, and owns a great number of them. I hesitate to guess how many, but it could number in the hundreds. He loves his precious guitars so much that he preferred not to let them out of his sight, and he would not entrust them to luggage handlers in airports. I don't recall ever reading that Howe had or has a fear of flying. I think he had a fear of his guitars crashing. He had a good friend in the USA who would chaffeur Howe and his tour guitars from city to city in a station wagon with the guitars packed in the back storage area. He travelled separate from the other members of the band, just one of his many idiosynchracies. He suppposedly left the arena quickly, saw to the roadies loading his guitars into the station wagon, then left for the road to the next concert as soon as possible after than night's show had ended. Fans loitering around the arena loading docks were always reporting this sort of Howe sighting after concerts.

      @@Yesquire0 There is a quick shot of Steve Howe in the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe documentary "In the Big Dream" where he is placing a guitar case into a spot between two other guitar cases --- by himself --- not the roadies --- himself, and it looks like he's trying to keep them in a particular order. So, I can see that happening.
      I was watching their performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, 1979 and they open with Siberian Khatru. He plays THREE different guitars in the song...electric, acoustic, and an electric slide guitar...not sure what they call it but it's on a stand and reminds me of a zither. It's on a roller so he pulls it towards him when he's ready to use it and kind of kicks it aside when he's done with it.

    There are different versions of "double neck guitars". Combos I've seen: one will be a six-string, the other a twelve string (where each string is doubled, like a mandolin); or one is a guitar and the other is a bass.
    I hadn't thought of two different tunings, but that's certainly another possible use.

    Dicon, haven't subscribed yet but have probably seen about 25 of yours in the last 10 days. Great stuff. I have enjoyed every one and your selection is spot on. Fyi (and I mean this humbly) I'm 54 and play a bit as well as just knowing and loving music. I know my shit. Through a longtime collection of great books and serious rock biographies in the vein of 1960 to the present, the backgrounds of all these musicians stories are told through friends and family, band mates, roadies, studio guys, etc. You mentioned you'd never seen Robert Plant before this video, nothing wrong with that, you're 16, you got time to soak it all in. But if you wanna go deep, start looking for some of these books and or books online. You will learn about these great musicians from birth to whatever happened to them after that. I read them because I truly want to go beyond the listening experience and find out what life was like back then in the music scene. It's fascinating to know what their lives and careers were like when I was born in 1966. I mean I was only 10 when 'We Will Rock You" came out let alone Hendrix, Stones, The Who, Doors, Joplin, Floyd, Zep etc . I didn't know shit from shit. Now I do. With all due respect, Cheers from the canadian Queen nut.

There are interviews where Page describes watching Robert writing it. If you would like to see that clip let me know, I will send it. There is also a recorded moving tribute that Plant gives to Page in 2007 that speaks of his writing lyrics to Page’s compositions. Each is about 5 minutes. If you are interested, let me know and I will post them. Watching clips of interviews with Page and Plant gives so much insight to the dynamics of the band and the fascinating, creative geniuses that they were...and still are by the way. One of the clear examples of it actually being useful is in Hotel California where Don Felder has a double neck guitar one used for the fugue part the song is best known for on one used for everything else. The recurring theme guitar isn't just tuned differently but has a strap on the neck which changes what the default notes are on that particular neck making it easier to do that part. He literally switches from one neck to the other without even a single note break.

    WOW! That is the version of this song I listened to the most. It is from "The Song Remains The Same" movie soundtrack that were all live recordings. I prefer it to the studio recording for a couple reasons, #1 because of the embellishments from Plant and Page's guitar work etc. and #2 because the studio version was just played so much on the radio. All of their live versions usually ran longer than studio recordings as they liked to jam and add bits and have fun with it, their live shows ran about 3 hours. In this case, as you can see, Jimmy Page switches from 12 string to 6 string guitar a couple times and he uses it on a few other songs as well. Alex Lifeson of Rush also uses a double neck with a 6 and 12 string. Yes it is from Lord of the Rings, Plant loved the books and used references in a number of songs including "Ramble On" and "Battle of Evermore". Very well done Daniel, check out more from "The Song Remains the Same" especially the title track , "Rain Song" and "No Quarter" and watch the film!! Sorry I Rambled On but I love this band.

    Figured I’d watch this one before Led Zep pulls it down, lol. Good job man. Live Led Zep is life altering. Btw, yes the double neck is a 12 and a 6. And NO, it wasn’t a “showing off, too much money” thing. Sure the guitar is hideously expensive, but Jimmy Page is without doubt THE master of electric guitar. His often sloppy onstage playing actually adds to his brilliance?! The double neck is a heavy, awkward, cumbersome instrument to play standing onstage, but there was a commitment to getting the ‘right’ sound out to the audience. When he switches off from the 12 to the 6 for the solo, you immediately hear the difference; Blissfully:)
