- Clint Eastwood's long and storied career has put him in the line of fire with a variety of different groups. Recently a clip from the Oscars in 1973 has received a new surge of attention as the actor makes a quip at the expense of Native American actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather after she makes a speech imploring for the better treatment of Native Americans onscreen in film and television and behind the scenes of the industry.

Eastwood's career, especially his later years as a director and producer, has been called into question, as claims of his output poorly reflecting minority groups represented in them has become a recent topic for debate. Movies like Gran Torino, The Mule, and American Sniper have all have received backlash at the time from the communities featured in them. Gran Torino's costar Bee Vang fears the casualness of the anti-asian racism in that movie encouraged real anti- asian racism disguised as jokes.
The Mule and American Sniper attracted attention for potentially normalizing the xenophobic attitudes in the movie by having the focus in the movie be so narrow it didn't do a satisfactory job of critiquing said attitudes.
Reaching 50 years in his relationship with Warner Brothers, Clint is being celebrated with the cinematic re-release of six of his movies, American Sniper, Gran Torino, Dirty Harry, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven, and The Bridges of Madison County.
The now viral clip of Eastwood is the most recent source of the debate about whether or not someone should be held accountable for what they've said or done in the past, especially when they're as old as Clint is. Eastwood's comments should either be dismissed given when they were said, or he should be more responsible than most for watching what he says.

Clint Eastwood is showing history at its best, good or bad. His movies show Americans will stand up and fight for those who are mistreated no matter their race.
When people see them self they want to blame someone else. Clint show it they way it is, I’m a black made and I can still things are not right and not equal. I spent 20 years in the military and racism was there to blacks and no equality for women. If Clint want to say it the way it is let him and those people who see them self need to take a long look in the mirror.

I remember watching many of Clint Eastwood’s movies when they 1st came out and remembering that unfortunately that’s how it was. Many of his movies are both Entertaining and Yes, do contain many racist sayings or comments. But to cancel something he’s doing now for something he said in the 70’s is ridiculous.

I live in Lao PDR. Most of my friends are Hmong and Lao. Great people. I saw Gran Torino for what it was, an old American man with new Hmong neighbours dealing with the good, the bad and the ugly. It's easy enough to say that a particular outlet says nothing wrong about side a but they don't mention that outlet B does. There's been so much noise about this 1973 Oscars incident in the past couple of years, surely Clint is well aware of it, but he says nothing. I love Clint Eastwood movies, but his silence on this as well as other criticisms speaks volumes about this guy. The Academy issued an apology to Sacheen Littlefeather, it opened the door for others to follow suit, but not this guy.
We should deal with the problems at hand and spend too much time and energy trying to re-write history !!
