Yep, definatley throughout the cool britania/ brit pop era.
I mean the thing is though you can have both, especially when you grew up in one country but your ethinicity is somewhere else. Noel is definitely Mancunian which is very English working man area and thats great that he surrports the down to earth working man and his roots.
But sometimes all artists like to think they are something else and Noel has sometimes been very contradictive in what he says.

It is extraordinary how many of Britians greatest musicians and Britain's top comedians have Irish backgrounds. Nearly 250000 Irish people emigrated in the 40s and 50s to UK. Their children changed the face of the UK.
    UK musicians with Irish backgrounds
Oasis, The Smiths( Morrissey and Marr), John Lydon, The Beatles, The Kinks , Dusty Springfield ( Real name Mary O Brien), Kate Bush, Elvis Costello ( Real name Declan McManus), Pete Doherty, Ed Sheeran, David Bowie ( Bowies mother was Irish). Every top band from Manchester with the exception of Joy Division had Irish backgrounds eg The Smiths Oasis The Buzzcocks. For example Johnny Marr parents come from a tiny village in rural Ireland where Mani from The Stone Roses grandparents come from.
    Comedians/Entertainers with Irish backgrounds
Steve Coogan, Peter Kay, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Carr, Spike Millgan, Declan Donnelly ( Ant and Dec) , Michael McIntrye, Sean Lock, Jason Manford, Frankie Boyle , Micky Flanagan, Shane Ritchie, Dermot O'Leary and many more.
If you look at other areas of politics, sports, literature and science the Irish have made little impact in UK. Both in the entertainment industry from director Danny Boyle ( parents from same area in Ireland as Liam and Noel Gallager, Steve Coogan, Spike Millgan andJohn Lydon parents come from eg Connacht ) to Kate Bush ( Mother is an Irish nurse) the first and second generation Irish in Britain have had extraordinary impact. They are not Irish . They are British artists. But that so many have Irish backgrounds many social historians now believe the Irish immigrant is the main factor in the rise of British music. As Morrissey said Irish blood England heart. When the Irish and English come together it makes great art. For example at the start of the last century some of the greatest writers were Irish men with English backgrounds eg Yeats Beckett and Wilde. Now and in the last 50 years some of the greatest musicians have been English with Irish backgrounds eg Gallagher, Morrissey, John Lydon ,Lennon Mcartney and Elvis Costello.

Yes funny ain't it how Irish have been a part of British showbusiness and pop, their are loads more that you haven't mentioned for instance.
      Peter Kay
      Ant and Dec
      Paddy Mc Guinness
      Boy George
      Dusty Springfield
      Dermot Murnaghan
      Kathy Burke
      Catherine Tate
      Brian Conley
      Sean Connery
      Gerald Butler
      James McAvoy
      Billy Connolly
      Shona McGarty
      Mickey Flanagan
      Pauline Quirke
      Paul O'Grady
      Shane Ritchie
      Bradley Walsh
      Stephen Mangan
      Stephen Mulhern
      Amanda Donohue
      Dawn French
      Shane Ward
      Barbara Windsor
      Susan Boyle
      Elizabeth Hurley
      John Thomson
      Leona Lewis
      Caroline Ahern. RIP.
And many, many more. Even Tommy Robinson the far right EDL leader parents are Irish.
However I think that the most ironic of all is Wayne Rooney England's greatest ever goal scorer and the present England goal scorer Harry Kane and then we have Eoin Morgan a Dublin-man who was the captain of the recent world-cup winning cricket team. Looks like the Irish have invaded Britain without a droplet of blood being spilled. The irony is extraordinary!!!!

I agree with you to a point. Like the ones who aren't fully ethnically Irish have not much significance. They are English cause born in England and have half or more of English blood. They are influenced of what they hear where they live which is England. I can name numerous artists who have no Irish ancestry and are much bigger artists in England than them. But saying that alot of England has Irish blood and alot Ireland have English.

    • @crashingdown6924

@@martinsanchez4827 ya but u miss the point completely, some of the most influential musicians came from direct irish families where irish music was prevalent. That's all the point is trying to be made. It has nothing to do with where your born... the 2nd half of your comment in confusing... I not nit picking now but what artist are bigger than oasis that dont have Irish history behind them? The truth is pre 2000s alot of the mega rock groups have strong irish connections even in Scotland and Wales the same also... alot of top top groups from there have strong Irish connections.. Rock music originated on the u.s and came to the u.k and later Australia in all cases some of the first mega pioneers of this genre where irish. And going forward those that mastered this art where of irish ancestry Oasis Beatles not to be repeating names... simply because music was a part of life in the family/home this is not the case for your traditional english home. So when you say they are influenced of what they hear because they live in england is just not true. They where not influenced by english culture and much as they where influenced by being poor and irish in england. Even all their english influence is part Irish in itself going back to the 50,s 60,s Beatles etc etc

The quotes that feature here are hugely contradicted by Noel's actions. A union flag on his guitar during the Britpop era, a St George's Cross on the cover of the gig programme for Oasis's Knebworth shows in 1996, and Noel often appearing on TV talking about the England football team saying things like "we're not doing as well as I hoped we would" and "our players aren't really performing are they". He is English sometimes and Irish sometimes.

I, as a Scottish nationalist take extreme offence to your comment, you believe that the gaelic language developed only in Ireland (in fact it came from celtic- a language family spoken from Switzerland to Scotland)

I don't really understand why there is a debate!?! In the first 3 minutes of his interview with Ryan Tubridy (search for it on youtube) he says the following: 1. 'I virtually grew up in Ireland in the 60s and 70s' 2. 'I had an Irish upbringing' and 3. 'There's no English blood in me and that's a fact'. Who are we to argue with the personal opinions of the great man himself? They are his opinions and we should respect them. I personally respect his views.

But ethnicity only makes you look diffrent it doesn't make you act or think diffrently, thats down to culture and Noel was brought up in an English culture making him English.

When was the last time the club even had English owners. What nationality is the manager again? How many English players compared to foreign players were ever at the club? He was offered to do 98 World Cup song for England, he turned it down. If Ireland qualified he would write Irish wc song. Noel sees himself an Mancunian. But he had a very strong Irish upbringing eg Irish music, Irish culture, Irish sports. Its the same with The Smiths Johnny Marr who doesn't consider himself English, he sees himself as Irish Manchester. The Irish in Manchester have a unique way of looking at themselves. You will find so many Mancunians with Irish parents feel similar to Noel. Noel has said this for 25 years. His first interview on Irish radio he said Oasis are the greatest band to come out of Ireland since the Smiths.
Noels very similar to many people born in English city with Irish parents. You will find at different stages of their lifes they feel more English, other stages more Irish. It depends in the person. Noel and Liam have different viewpoint on their idenitity. liam sees himself as English, and also Irish. He shouts for Ireland in soccer and for England. But he considers himself more English. Noel has a different viewpoint and its changed through his life. In his early life, he enjoyed Irish culture and sports. But in his teenage year getting into music and City, he started to feel more English. As he got older working with Irish uncles he feels more Irish in erly 20s. Then again he gets into music, joins Oasis, Britpop takes off, he feels English and Irish. This is how allot of English people born with Irish parents feel. Lydon, Gallaghers, Morrisey, Marr, Dusty Springfield, Boy George, David Essex, Kevin Rowland and kate Bush, they all have Irish parents mother and fathers and they see themselves their indentity as dual at times, but also many of them see themsevles as Irish. And in the last 20 years Noel has said over and over again hes Irish. But its with Manchester he idenitfies with more than England. Hes Irish Manchester, hes an Irish Mancunian. And many Mancunians with Irish parents feel this way also. Johnny Marr feels the very same. Morrisey is half Irish, half English eg Irish blood English Heart song. Liam is more like Morrisey half Irish half English. its a personal feeling, that is Noel and liams background. In England the English dont understand the whole Irish thing, that English born person with Irish parents can see themselves as Irish. 44 million Americans see themselves their ethnic group as irish American. In England, you dont have the term Irish English, but Irish Manchester Noel and liam are, Elvis Costello, John lennon, Paul Mcarthney, George Harrison were Irish liverpool and John lydon and Dusty Springfield ( real name is Mary O Brien) are london Irish, kevin Rowland from the Dexys is Birmingham Irish. Its the greatest cities of liverpool, London, Manchester that they very much feel apart of. But also as outsiders, because they sons and daughters of Irish immigrants. It complicated in one ways is not. Noel said it this week " I am not English, I am Irish with Irish parents". And we all Noel is not afraid to speak his mind. Thats how he feels.

At the end of the day, every son has to say....that's my ma you're talking about...whenever Brits slag off Irish. Marr once said he got called an Irish pig on the estates. Even if youre English, you suddenly say yeah well so what? Its about saying, Im not ashamed and being contrarian, and the Gallaghers LOVE contrarianism... though its clear that they're culturally Brit every step of the way. I think the marriage of culture and dual identities can bring healong and reconciliation after such a sore history.... when people ask these questions a lot, it means they are looking for the artists to express something that isnt being addressed in art that people would like.
