"I told you I'd shoot but you didn't believe me why didn't you believe me" that line stuck with me my whole life and it still makes me laugh to this day I'm thankful I grew up in the 90s
I didn't think Stimpy was smart enough to make a mind control helmet
Solid comedy gold. I still laugh myself silly with this line.
This never gets old. Definitely one of the best R&S eps, if not the best ep.
It's still hilarious to me
How old are you?
"I'll teach you to be happy"... That is a scary threat.
Tell that to the WEF.

You know, when I was a kid, I didn't know Ren was intentionally trying to get the helmet off. I just thought he was smashing it because he had gone crazy with happiness and once it was broken, he was back to normal.
That's surprisingly dark.

You've actually never heard of the happy helmet?
Ren's psychotic laugh I'll never get tired of it
It puts the Joker's laugh to shame
This episode was voiced by John Kricfalusi.
Most iconic Ren moment
I agree.
Same LOL. I love his laugh.
Years later do I only realize how dark this really is.
did I miss something? What is the dark part?
The dark part is that Ren is forced to be happy and couldn’t control himself, then he becomes insane.
Yeah, it's really kind of sick, but provokes a lot of profound thought, mainly 'What is happy?" and 'Is it acceptable to impose our own idea of happiness onto others?'
Everything is normal when you're a kid. I thought schools in the US were literally run the way they're shown in The Simpsons. Lunch ladies doubling as apathetic school nurses (my school didn't even have a nurse or a cafeteria). Or the new chairs that change the shape of their bones to eliminate slouching by the year 3000. I basically took everything in the first 5 seasons as being literal if it wasn't a blatant joke.

Give me an example of how to use it in a conversation.
As children, we relate with Stimpy. As we get older, however, we begin to relate to Ren more and more with each passing year.
Even as current child, I relate with Ren the most. My friends try to make me happy and when Ren begins hitting himself is when the suicidal tendencies take over
Even as a kid I was Rened out.
Inevitably, irrevocably... happy birthday? No such thing
As a kid, I just had murderous intent for stimpy.

Billy West, that insane laughter was the best icing on the cake of this show.

@@jstevinik3261 Oh i see and John Kricfalusi have not ashame for that
Just wanted to point out that John K voiced Ren himself, and Billy only took over as Ren in addition to Stimpy once John K was kicked off the show. That's not to say John wasn't abusive when they /were/ working together.
I was never allowed to watch this as a kid for obvious reasons, but I’d put it on when my mom would leave to run errands
My first words were happy happy joy joy🤪
I watched it once when it came on early in the morning on Nick. I was bored. I preferred the humor of Doug and Rugrats. My only happy memory of this show was that the best Math Tutor I ever had would go on and on about how much he loved this show lol
You know how parentsa ALWAYS walk in on the worst possible moment and they refuse to wait for context? My mom walked in at 3:16.
My parents were pretty easy going on what I could watch anyway most of the time, but also like many 90's parents I think they thought "it's a cartoon, so it's for kids" 😅
Same here lol
The fact that Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl has the Happy Happy Joy Joy dance as Ren and Stimpy's victory animation.
And the APC dance as their taunt.
That's right and I hope it was used again in All-Star 2
“I told you I’d shoot! But you didn’t believe me! Why didn’t you believe me?” One of the darkest moments in any western and it’s used for a solid laugh here. I don’t see Big County until much later, and I was amazed that was the scene they used here.
Whoa thanks for the info! I always thought that line was strange(ly amazing). Makes sense that it’s a reference.
Oh, I was do confused from that line. Figured it was a reference to something I didn't see

Anyways these early episodes are perfect... I think a reboot by someone else is a terrible idea.
I love how the singer gets more unhinged as the song goes on 😅
As messed up as this episode is, Ren genuinely thanking Stimpy at the end was pretty wholesome, because without Stimpy forcing Ren to be happy all the time, he wouldn't have realized what trully made him happy.
I like how Stimpy's eyes twitch, when Stinky Wizzletits says "boys". He's like "Oh boy, that's for me"

Okay for as dark and disturbing as the rest of this is I have to appreciate how wholesome that ending is.
In the 1990's I worked in animation and this became a helpful inside joke with co-workers. When things got tense we would say "Happy Happy Joy Joy" and immediately laugh and relax.

Best. Song. Ever.
Stinky's picture on the record is a caricature of Burl Ives, his voice is a (bad) impersonation of Ives, and the random lines uttered between choruses of "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" are extracts from childrens' records he made, Disney documentaries he narrated, and "The Big Country" a Western he had a lead role in.
