I did the same walk throughs with my daughter. I always asked about safety. I asked the person showing us if they would feel comfortable having a family member live there. If the response was stumbling around like you had it was a no go. I did however come across a person showing that said, " you know I don't live in this area but I have been working for this company for a while and I really like how they run their business and she said, I would check with the surrounding neighbors. Maybe introduce yourself and get a feel if it's a right feel for you.....ding ding right answer. She never directly answered the question but I felt that her response was truthful and genuine. We did talk to residents that were walking around and ultimately decided on that apartment. It didn't have everything updated inside but it was cleaned and obviously taken care of.

Hi Nicole I noticed but it’s not obvious on video. All I see is a gorgeous mom with her wonderful daughter. You are so alike. Especially your laughs. This whole process is scary. Please be safe Maddy. Every night before you go to bed always “LOCK” your sliding glass door to the veranda. Put a long thin stick in the door slide behind the door too.

Wow! Loved the video! OK, I had to laugh! I honestly, did not notice the “blemish” on the nose, until you mentioned it…. Lol! And then, I actually had to look for it, once you mentioned it!! And then, it was not that obvious to me… Lol! I was so laughing, because you all are so funny!! In a good way, I have to say… lol! Anyways, if apartments cannot explain their security plan, then that is a huge red flag for me. I enjoyed this video -you all are hysterically Funny! Thank you for taking us on this journey with you! We relate more than you know.😍🤪🤣

The safety question is one that is tricky. You are trained not to say anything that implies security because if something happen. Not only could the leasing consultants but also the management and owners can be sued. People have won major lawsuits where safety was assured and things happened. The risk of liability is something they stress. So if you say something to one, you have to say it to everyone or you personally can be sued.

    • @NicoleNorthgardenHomeandGarden

They should give them a legal-approved sheet with what the building does to promote safety or something! So they have a better answer than “Google it” which is what the fire lady said lol!

@NicoleNorthgardenHomeandGarden , that's just rude. I would let her manager know. Especially if it's the one who showed you an apartment that was not show ready. That person is not a good employee. I was in property management for over 25 years. Everyone knows you do not show a home that's not show ready. It's shows that the person doesn't care about their job nor the success of their community. This is just my opinion, though.🙂

It’s crazy out there. My son chose an apartment in the old RCA factory building in Camden, New Jersey. We weren’t aware at the time that Camden had the highest murder rate in the US.😳😳😳 Later, after a scary experience, he switched to indoor parking, too. Live and learn.
You’d think they’d stop getting carpet and put in better floors so you could stop getting the carpet cleaned. I’m not sure I could take my shoes off. But poop, yuck!

Prices are comparable to the suburbs east of Phoenix. My daughter and her roommate have a two bedroom for $1600, with a year lease. Month to month would have been $2400. I remember back in 1999 I had a nice one bedroom for $400 a month!

  • @Heyrizzo

I’m in NY so $1400 for a 1br in a building is considered cheap! Sad but true. The building reps that couldn’t answer safety questions need a script to follow. I’m thinking they fear someone will take their answer as possible discrimination, especially if an area is not so desirable due to safety/crime concerns. Good luck!

I used to live in Richfield and the East Bloomington. I worked in Edina. I enjoyed it. Today, you couldn’t pay me enough to move to the cities. Nobody can guarantee the safety of another. They can tell you it’s a security building, but they can’t protect you against the threat from an unknown third party. It’s impossible. Safety is the responsibility of the individual. That being said, avoid the obvious bad neighborhood. Good luck. Apartments seem rather similar as they all are. I’d look for individual laundry in each apartment. I’d avoid the common laundry area. At least you can find an apartment. In Duluth you’d be lucky to find a nice place under $2K and it would be small. My nephew just rented a little place for $1150. It’s a miracle. It’s near the College of St Scholastica so there will be students. I pretty much guarantee he’ll be moving again once he familiarizes himself with the city. Maybe not. Maybe he’ll love it. I always try to find a place close to my employer. Sometimes I buy, sometimes rent. I may sell my place in the not too distant future. It’s just far more than I require. I will miss the yard.

I hope you have luck finding a nice apartment in a good area. Safety is important. Thank you for taking us on your journey.

My best friend was in Vegas for years and the COL did rise rapidly but she was paid more than she was here in minnesota.
People are always like “IT’S SO CHEAP” but the pay reflects it. She was paying $1400 for a one bedroom in Vegas and $1000 in MN but the percentage of her pay was almost exactly the same. The Vegas apt was nicer too. Had washer/dryer in unit , dishwasher, gym in building and she doesn’t have those amenities here.
It’s not like she was able to move and keep her same wage.
This is the experience of the working class which is a big percentage of the workforce. I suppose if you’re a digital nomad and make the same wherever you live your experience will be different.

Hey, just a heads up, the reason the one leasing agent might have gotten weird when you asked about security is, saying the wrong thing can actually get her sued. You have to think of, say, she tells you "oh, we provide security cameras or controlled access buildings, "for your security" or "for your safty" Then...a month after you move in, some crazy person comes & does something weird, you then could go back to her and say "well YOU told me I was secure! You TOLD me all these things would keep me safe! You're liable for making me feel like I would be safe walking down to the laundry without locking my door!" Those kinds of things. Not that you would, but, this is one of the reasons agents get worried about answering any "safety, security" questions. It really is that, like you cannot tell someone you are providing any kind of safty or security for them or it can come back to bite you in the butt later, depending on how they wanted to interpret it or how far they would want to hold people accountable. You can tell somone the security measures you provide, like controlled access, gated entry, underground parking, cameras, but, never inply someones safety. You are taking on too big of a risk for yourself and the company. She is probably just scared to death of answering the question because of trining telling her it's dangerous to imply you are promising someone is safe or that you are going to make them safe. Properties generally don't want to take on that kind of liability. Could be she got in trouble before for saying something like that too lol.
She may have also wondered if you were a secret shopper after asking that question. Agents are often secretly "shopped" to ensure they do not violate any laws or do anything the company finds unbecoming. The property manager would get a copy (if it's not the property manager being shopped) and then the agent will be evaluated based on their performance. Could have been either of those things.
If you really want to know what the safety is like, call the local police dept and ask them, they will be more than willing to share if it's a good idea to live there or not. Some can provide a local police report summary for the city of public police calls, then you can just look over the reports for a place you're thinking of moving. It will include all addresses, so, you will have to just highlight the buildings that are in your complex and look at those.
