  • On Saturday, May 6, 2017 the new drop table at the Nelsonville Shops of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway was used for the first time, to remove the No. 3 driver from their Baldwin No.3. The Right side journal had been running warm, and after we removed the driver found out why. Bad pitting from years of static display, cracked crown brass and an oil groove with sharp edges that served to scrape the oil off the journal instead of drawing the oil under the bearing.
The axle will be turned, new brasses installed and No.3 will be back in service very soon!

Judging by the noise is that thing screw jack operated?

The screws are stationary and the nuts rotate, connected by shafts and bevel gears. Also operating in a giant concrete echo chamber doesn't help.

Totally slick: never seen anything like that before.

@@YoungstownSteelHeritage It's a great lift, I was also wondering about it, is there four electric motors geared down to turn the nuts?

Goo0d shoot. N/S had a roundhouse about 60 miles away but the last time I was by there it looked like they were tearing it out.

I vounteer there, and for anyone who wants to know the steam loco is a Baldwin built for a power company in WV, where I live, and later sold to Ohio power and donated with Ohio power no.2 a fireless Porter engine to hv in the 1980's

The perils of doing work on advertised volunteer work days!

true, but still could have marked off a bit of area so camera would not be blocked

I was there to work on the locomotive. I stuck the go pro to the building column and went to work. I could have left it in the car.
