    Hi. The engine is a General Motors GT-22CU. Till some years ago, it was possible to make the whole trip from Salta by train. They say it's better now, because it includes different stops and it contributes to different sectors of the region's economy. That might work for regular tourists, but for a railfan the key element of the journey is the train itself and its outstanding work of engineering throughout the whole line.

    that's a General Electric GT22CU turbo diesel/electric engine. It has 2475 HP and 127 cubic liters 2 stroke diesel V12. A very strong old lady.

    I love how humble the trip is, the main character is nature, right?

    • @lucma1999
      @lucma1999 2 месяца назад

      Nature, in addition to the impressive effort and engineering work carried out for more than 20 years to complete the line at that time (1920's to 40's). However, this would be better appreciated if the entire journey could be completed by train.

    Hola amigo Garry!, en el año 2012, hicimos ese mismo viaje con el tren pero, saliendo desde la misma estación donde hoy toman los autobuses hasta San Antonio de los Cobres. La excursión duraba todo el día porque se demoraba mas de 7 hs en llegar hasta el viaducto de La Polvorilla y otro tanto de vuelta. Pero valía la pena solo por el viaje en el tren, ya que pasaba por una decena de "soluciones de ingeniería" ferroviaria para poder llegar hasta los mas de 4000 mts del viaducto. Túneles en espiral, trayectos en zig-zag hacia adelante y hacia atrás, viaductos y puentes para sortear los ríos y todo en permanente ascenso. Realmente me alegra que hayan decidido hacerlo, aunque solo sea esa mínima parte. Un gran saludo desde Buenos Aires !

      Que pena que el via del tren desde Salta al viaducto esta cerrado y no funciona. Parece que fue una experiencia muy genial!

    I got altitude sickness on this train. It was probably self inflicted because I drank a few cocktail during the ride 😂. Not even the coca leaves could rescue me. I ended up in the medical car huffing oxygen for about 20-30 minutes. Still worth it! The view is incredible and the live folkloric music was also great.

      bummer! yeah, there was a family sitting next to me and the daughter was sick and not having a good time. It was a real shame. Sometimes the altitude just gets you!

    San Antonio de Los Cobres was the capital of the Gobernación de Los Andes from 1900 to 1943. A Gobernación or Territorio Nacional was a type of political division that depended directly from the national government, unlike a province that is autonomous. This figure was used mainly in strategic areas such as bordering territory.

      I don't know, but the camera battery is a bit finicky and can't be charged from wall outlets, it can damage the battery. I have to charge it from my computer.
