I'm surprised you didn't mention how beautiful the game looks. This is a late era GBC game and it really shows. Compare this even against other late GBC games and this one blows most out of the water. The overworld and towns look significantly better than overworlds and towns in just about any other 8-bit RPG I can think of, even on Master System or GameGear with their high color depth.
You are right, it looks very good for a GBC RPG. But when this game came out, cartridge ROMs were much, much cheaper than in the old Master System times, so they could fit much more detailed sprites on GBC games.
@@cube2fox Really? This game shouldnt even existed! It shits on the story of Lufia 1 and 2 with this crappy misconception. Sadly the game wasnt ported to PS1 (due to lack of funds) which would be a lot more good, but it got ported to one of the most shitty consoles ever and the result is this...
Ah, my favorite GB/GBC RPG! A lot of people still don't seem to know how good this game is. Thanks for the great review -- This game deserves more attention.
i like the random dungeons. it gives you the opportunity to restock on various chest items in case u want one ancient text skill someone has and want another person to gain it. as well as collecting certain items u want a lot of like goddess tears for the beginning/mid point of the game before getting the stronger heal spells later on.
As someone who has yet to play the game (Tho I do own the 3DS VC version), the random dungeons remind me a lot of the Mystery Dungeon games, which is definitely not a bad thing to me.
Wow, for a Gameboy game those are some freaking *gorgeous* graphics. It's too bad the GBC didn't come out earlier, and maybe see some more widespread use.
I bought this on the VC and as a major PMD fan this is now my all time favorite GBC game. I strongly recommend it even to newcomers, and the music is one of the hidden gems of the GB library.

Underrated game in the series -- or in general -- for sure. Lots of interesting ideas, a good story and really great music for an original-GB-sound-hardware game especially. I wasn't a big fan of the 'ancient cave lite' direction for the dungeons, but everything else worked out well. I do wonder a lot about what the PS1 game would've been like though, I remember reading about it way back when I first got the internet in the late 90s then it just kinda disappeared and was replaced with this.
I remember picking this game up when it came out. The ending felt all too familiar after beating the first two, which didn't bother me at all. I enjoyed this game all the way to the end.
Snes Drunk you finally did it! I remember wanted this review since you review Lufia 2 (which is the first review i ever watch from this channels and stay loyal till now) And now Finally!,you reviewed it. :) Thank You so Much SNESDrunk. :) got to agree though, this game is grindy, but for time killer this game is worth it.
Trying to fill some holes in my collection, been filling my wishlist out for snes, genesis, turbo, etc.. and I run into your videos even for handhelds.
I had a lot of fun with this game it's very addictive. Very deep for a game boy color game. I thought it was better than lufia 1. I have no faults with the game I thought it was that good
Just started playing this 2 weeks ago. I like it a lot. The monotonous battle system doesn't bother me. It's perfect for portable gaming. I like grinding while walking to work.
My favorite song is litterally your hoke village, it gives you that “happy nice little home feel” then whips you with the heroic solo part of the Theme thats unexpected
Unfortunately, this game isn’t as cheap as you said it was, back when this video was originally uploaded. Even rough looking copies are going for upwards of $70 now, and it doesn’t help that the 3DS eshop shuts down this year. I was lucky enough to scoop up my copy for $5 from a pawn shop about a year ago.
I remember playing this as a kid back then as it came as a bundle with other games my cousin download on my dad laptop and was mad suprised by the huge party slot. Cuz i was used to ff 4 unit per team lineup
I have only played fortress of doom and rise of the sinistrals for SNES. But after enough research about the other Lufia titles, this is the only one I'm interested in trying.
This game was the shit. Story time... This was supposed to come out right before 9/11, so when 9/11 happened this game was understandably delayed. I remember thinking, damn there's nothing on TV with all this news, wish I had Lufia 3 to play. I'm kind of a dick I guess.
I played through this game some years back. For a GBC game, it's exceptionally good. It's definitely a hidden gem for the platform. The randomly generated dungeons are it's only flaw IMO. I actually love randomly generated dungeons, but the GBC is just too limited to be able to do them well. Dark Cloud and it's sequel did it very well, but they were PS2 games. In those games, the floors were quite large, the random generation was far more complex, and every dungeon had completely different themes. In Lufia III, the random generation is far more simplistic(floors are always a 3X3 area with 7-9 little rooms), and the dungeons all look the same(IIRC). They are allot of fun to play through at first, but you really start to tire of them around the halfway point. I really hated The Ruins of Lore. I don't remember exactly why I hated it, but I think it had something to do with leveling up later in the game. I just remember there was something about it that was a real bitch. I said "No fucking way I'm doing that!" and resorted to using a cheat code, but then I think something happened to my save file or something. I never finished it.
I enjoyed the game and put in about 50 hours into it, yet the game felt unfinished and barely polished. I'm pretty sure, that if the ideas in it were executed properly (or at least completely implemented) or if the battle system was faster or if the characters had more dialogue and weren't some generic fucking kids that stroll though the world, doing their fucked up jobs as hunters while remaining silent until they start talking at a certain random point about obstacles they have to face that the game would be the best in the series imo. Also, about the leveling, there's a bug in the game that lowers your stats if they surpass a certain number with a new level up. One way to prevent that is to change jobs, when your stats are really high, so that you don't lose like 100 attack despite the fact that you're a swordsman.
I actually couldn't get into "The Ruins of Lore". Maybe i didn't get far enough, but the beginning of the game felt so different from Lufia 1 and 2 that it just seemed like a half-baked attempt at a Lufia title. I could be wrong if I gave it more time, but I was very disappointed. Lufia 2 is one of my favorite RPGs, easily top 5.
You're not the only one(i think it's Ok though, worst from the series besides Lufia 1) The attack animation is too long, the monsters are kinda the only good attempt in the game,Also the Ancient dungeon either would leave you breathless or make you load back the game, you never know what boss gonna appear next(without guide you are screwed, Hard) ,the character ain't much and the story is good(at most part)but if you had the patience to finish it,then you really deserve a big clap. :)
Chaser I loved the ancient dungeon, lol. It was also the first SNES game that had a story that I thoroughly enjoyed. The ending? Man. So good. (At least I thought so).
Imagine if this had been completed on the PSX. It was originally going to be actually Lufia III, and would have brought the series in to the next generation of home consoles- possibly extending its life for years to come. Instead, after this got downgraded to GBC the series would never leave the handheld or get a new main-series installment again, with only The Ruins of Lore (explicitly a gaiden game) on GBA and Curse of the Sinistrals as an in-name-only (it's an action RPG) remake of Lufia II on the DS. Sad to see the Estpolis series fall into such obscurity, but it's far from the only classic JRPG to just trail off and vanish for no real reason (why the hell did Grandia have to die anyway?).
I know what you mean. For some games like Grandia, Lunar, or Chrono even, it feels like even one title in the series that doesn't do as well as it's predecessors seemingly dooms any hope of future games in the series from being made. It's so frustrating and sad.
@@raina1848 it’s a shame amazing series’ like those got canned after one slightly subpar release while nowadays we have game series releasing mediocre almost identical releases year after year nonstop. Though I understand that the nature of the industry is different now.
Turns out, the original developer was Nihon Flex and the planned Title was "Lufia III: Ruins Chaser". According to promotional material and development documents that got auctioned off, it was intended to conclude the SNES storyline, was set 300 years after Lufia 1 and would have six playable characters, plus isometric 2D graphics similar to Neverland Company's Energy Breaker. The development documents also featured artwork of Capsule Monsters. Suffice to say, it would have been quite a different beast compared to The Legend Returns.
I think it's odd that all the characters all all one colour. They're all either all red, all green or all blue (except for the white bits of course). The Gameboy Colour could do better, so I wonder why they did that? Was it entirely a readability issue, to make sure you could tell everyone apart at a glance? With 9 party members that might make sense, but still...
Fast-forward on an emulator definitely helps. I don't beat every game I review though, I didn't beat 7th Saga for example, otherwise I'd still be sitting here playing it and no video would've posted today, or next week, or the week after.
Does anyone know if you battle Erim (the leader of the Sinistrals shown at the start of Lufia 2) at all? One thing that kinda bugged me about Lufia 2 is that you never fought the leader of the sinistrals.
Does anyone even use anyone besides Wain, Aima and Deckard? (And I suppose Randolph on occasion). I've just found everyone else just couldn't keep up in terms of damage output. Yes I know Ruby is basically a guaranteed one turn kill if you abuse savestates, but everyone else just seems to be... there. Melphis and Seena were always my healers and I never saw the need to give them any other role, their magic output just couldn't keep up with the damage my melee fighters were putting out. Dei has speed but not much else. Yurist is average in all roles, Isaac has a high INT stat he lacks the magic or IP skills to make use of. Ruby is only broken if you're on an emulator, Milka is another decent healer and Mousse is nice for some extra damage but I always found him unreliable with how little he used Tail Illusion (basically his only good move). Egg Dragon is nice for Ancient Cave runs, but otherwise doesn't feel like he contributes that much with how strong you have to be to get him on your side.
I'm two years too late, but I liked to use Milka and put her in the center of the top row, flanked by Wain, Randolph, and Deckard. Three Red SF's boosting her make her arrows super effective, especially when she gets Artea's Bow!
Meh, I'm not a fan of this game. The dungeons were boring. It's not super tedious because you could just climb up and down the stairs until the next floor's stairs spawned next to you or near you. Did that when I didn't feel like getting lost. And don't even got to mention how grindy the game is. Bosses will slaughter you if you don't grind at least 5 extra levels before you fight it. Even then, you'll barely win in some bosses. Boss battles weren't very rewarding to beat either. Unlike in other games, where beating a difficult boss would be rewarding, here it didn't have that feeling. Bosses here felt super random in their pattern. On one turn, a hit would barely hurt me, but another turn suddenly half my party is wiped out. I constantly felt like I could lose in any moment due to luck. Overall, battles were a pain. There were times where characters would get one shot, even if they were in the back row. This would even happen in monster encounters. The healers ended up sucking because they were so slow that by the time you needed to heal someone, they were already dead.
I really liked Lufia 2, but this one just bored me. The random dungeons are lame, the story is not as interesting, and the combat is dull. It was disappointing to me.
