Shifter: The Bag Man, Tenba Fulton v2 14L

  • I have a bag fetish. I will admit. But there is a semi-delusional rationale to why I lust for the containers of life. By my count, I've got eight or so bags used to house all kinds of things my life and job demand. Each is designed for a specific purpose, a specific fabricated need. And in the midst of this system lives the bag for daily use. And this, my friends, leads me to the Tenba Fulton v2 14L. The Cadillac of bags is really two bags in one. So sit back, pour a tall one and let me explain this ever-critical aspect of my life.

    I remember watching an aging Magnum snapper walking down a street in Bangkok with a Domke F bag thrown over his shoulder, leaning hard over like he was chasing the America's Cup. I've done the backpack/fanny pack balancing act ever since. The Domke sits in the shelf behind me, a memory from my youth. Still use the belt pouches though.

    The best part of this review is how the bag is used and far more important than the stitching or the zippers.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  2 года назад +1

      It's funny you mention that. Zippers and stitching are SO good across bag platforms I never really even had to think about it. Zipper size is important but otherwise we seem to have nailed this aspect.

    I just want to say, I sincerely appreciate your rather in depth review of this bag. It seems to be the only actual review of it, especially in the 14L size, and in English. Lol I just ordered this after trying on the smaller 10L size, and after watching probably 100 videos of what seems like every bag on the market. While I will be picking up something higher end down the road, the Tenba FultonV2 14L seems like a properly good every day carry backpack.

      I think you will be happy. I am. And the 14L feels about perfect.

    • @Dudeitsjonny2
      @Dudeitsjonny2 2 года назад

      @@DANIELMILNOR505 I am curious though, do you know if the 14L will comfortably hold a 70-200? It looks like it will size wise, but given that the idea of the bag is to be lightweight, I would think the added weight would kind of defeat some of the purpose?

    Hi Daniel, based on your recommendation I recently purchased the Tenba 14L version 2 bag (in the UK) and I’m very pleased with it, so thanks for your review. In the past, I viewed bags as distinctly “camera bags”, or “travel bags”, but this product really does serve both purposes very well and it’s a great solution - not too big and bulky, but still with plenty of room. The camouflage option is definitely worth going for and in the UK is only £10 more expensive, so a “no brainer“ really - Thanks - Peter.

    I have just taken delivery of mine. Very happy with it. Small, waterproof (nearly), comfortable, etc. It's a bit Tardis like IMO. If you're a Fuji user you're going to love it cos you can fit a bunch of stuff in the camera cell...one body and up to 6 lenses (little lenses admittedly). Two bodies and a few lenses is also doable if you need a backup. Tonnes of room in the daypack for essentials. Front compartment is good enough from the looks of it...haven't got a laptop yet to check dimensions, but it should meet my future needs. There's no such thing as a perfect bag, but for me I'm struggling to find fault. Much appreciated Daniel for sharing this.

    Loved this review, and i must say your requirements of "odd" bags seem to fint mine as well haha. I gone through so many, AND i have a problem with he same thing with the back from carrying too many messenger bags over the years. I also have been looking for a bag that is a bit dual in nature as this bag is, with the toploading and the camera gear downstairs :)
    Not many other bags do that, or at least not in the past. But this really hits home with me because of the functionality, the lightness of it, the size and the look. So yeh, agree with pretty much everything you said about it.
    Im going to test it now together with quite a challenge.carrying my Pentax 67 and a lens and some other stuff , but something tells me its going to face this challenge too head on and come out the winner :) as well as my back....hopefully :P

    I just got the 10L version of this bag. The narrrow profile is the main factor why I went for it. Comfortable, and I was surprised to like to roll-top feature that allows me to stuff (more like dump) things into it while on the go. The camera and lens storage give peace of mind. The thickness and width of the straps are God-sent. All that is lacking is that AG23 patch and it’ll be the best camera pack of all time!

    I still have my late 80s Domke F2. I switched the smaller bags in the 90s and for some reason they did not survive. I went with a belt and Domke and Newswear pouches. My shoulders stopped hurting but my hips were taking three brunt of pain. I showed my chiropractor how I carried stuff and he said I needed to add suspenders to it. So I got the chest vest, which is great, but less then ideal for a walking around solution. My North Face small fanny pack is my favorite bag ever.

I do like the quality of Tenba and how they are constantly evolving their bags or making inserts for non-camera bags. Perhaps it might be too large, but you might like the AER Travel Pack 3 in X-PAC for those D.C. downpours. It fits the Peak Design Camera Large/Medium Camera Cubes and the quality is fantastic. Most important is that it doesn't look like a camera bag like this. And also if you want to use it as a day pack you just leave the insert at your place of stay in a safe space. I almost got the camo fulton 16L, but opted for a Shimoda x30, just to fit all my gear and crap when flying. it's a rolltop as well, and that is a deal breaker for me. I replaced an fstop gear rolltop with the most absorbent fabric of all time, which isn't helpful in oregon.

    👍🏼 I’m also the backpack’s guy 😂😂😂 I hate carrying stuff in my pockets.
    I have some questions that has nothing to do with that….
    I was taking a good look at my Magnum Contact Sheets Book (studying this book it’s like taking a photography posgraduated course 😂)..I realized that many times some photographers in the field don’t interfere at the reality of the scene but kind of direct a little bit their subjects. Bruce Gilden, tells that at the Yakusa reportage, he asked the yakusa fellow to do the lighting cigarette scene again. In your opinion, what is the limit that the photojournalist or the documentary photographer can go in terms of directing the scene?
    And second question: Thomas Hoepker sad that at the picture of the group of 5 people, apparently calmly hanging together in East River, with the smoke of the 9/11 at the background (amazing picture in my opinion) doesn’t tell the true about what was going on with them and if you take a look at the contact sheets, those people are actually worried and discussing what has just happened. What are your thoughts about that?

    Quick question…how big is the laptop sleeve? Tenba’s website says it’ll take a 14” laptop, but their video and the retailers are saying 13”. I need to get a new MacBook and would prefer the 13” air, but common sense is saying go for the 14”. I ask cos I would prefer not to have to get the full fat Fulton to fit the larger laptop. What size is the laptop you put into the bag?

    • @DANIELMILNOR505
      @DANIELMILNOR505  2 года назад +1

      Mine is a 13 and it fits with room to spare. I heard the new 14, which I have on order as well, is the same size but they handled the screen real estate a little better. I'm hoping like Hell it fits. At this point, I'd rather have a new Air because it will do everything I need including process 4k easily.

      Just got this from Tenba…
      Laptop sizes are measured on the diagonal, much like televisions. So, the dimensions of the sleeve just have to meet or exceed the laptop dimensions:
      Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch: 22.1 x 31.25 x 1.55 cm
      Fulton v2 14L sleeve 22 x 33 x 2 cm
      When the bag was launched, we stated it would fit a 13-inch laptop. Then Apple introduced their new 14-inch machine, it was a happy accident that the v2 14L sleeve was big enough to fit it.
      Of course, there are plenty of 14” laptops from other manufacturers that are too big for these bags, but I hope that by providing the dimensions of the sleeve that customers will check before buying.

    Fine review & a bit of nice dry humour thrown in for good measure. 👍
    I currently use a Lowepro flipside Trek 350ii, for when i"m out in the sticks. Looking for a similar style/layout of bag for Urban duties. The Tenba 14L Camo looks like it would fit the bill. Would anyone know how big the top compartment is? ie dimensions and volume (normal height & fully extended). My Flipside fits camera & 3 lenses in bottom & DJI mini 2 with its bag in the top section quite snug. No room for much else though, ie fleece etc. With the rolltop I'm hoping for a bit of extra space.
    What I like about the Rolltop on the Tenba compared to other bags. It looks neat & not like Paddington Bears school satchel. A lot of other so called boutique brands just look plain odd to me.
    Cheers...

      I typically have my mini iphone tripod, sunglass case, binculars and jacket in the top and still have plenty of room. And the bottom is mostly empty as I only carry an audio recorder and one body/one lens. The 14 is the best because it fits easily on the plane.

      @@DANIELMILNOR505 Thanks for the reply Daniel. I have just purchased this bag. Super chuffed with the quality & look etc. Can fit my camera gear in the bottom section quite easily & drone With a lightweight fleece squeezed in the tip section. However I think the harness (the padded section) from the top of the bag to the adjustment straps are far too short. With the chest strap in place, there is not enough space to put my Peak design capture clip in the ideal place. In the process of finding out if the 16L version has a longer harness. To anyone considering the 14L I am 5'11" & medium build as a reference. I wish camera bag manufactures would take a leaf out of trekking bag such as Osprey which offer different sizes & the ability to adjust the harness. Not everyone is the same shape & size. 👍

    Sounds like my bag system. I have a Vanguard shoulderbag since 30 years. Then I ordered a Neewer big backpack/trolley to put all my Nikon gear in, but now it's too heavy to put on my back. I also have a Hama revolverbag. Because the shoulder bag has become too heavy I ordered a small Amazon Basics backpack, which is comfortable carry, but not as practical as a shoulder bag. I have another Amazon Basics shoulder bag, which I had intended for my son. Well maybe my daughter will take it when she continues in photography.
    I have a plastic bin too and I feel the same about tripods, although I have 2 (one was an inheritance).
    P.S. my ex-wife sounds the same as your wife, but I can advise not to feel negative about your wife. Vibes seem to spread in my experience.

      I love all my wife's quirks. I really do. It's part of what makes marriage so great. Knowing they will never change, and shouldn't change. It's about adaptation. I love shoulder bags but my back does not. On those rare times I get a massage, each time the therapist will say "How do you not have headaches?" "How did you walk in here?" "Aren't you in chronic pain?" So, it's backpacks for me. But how great is it that we have all these choices?

    I don’t like your choice of Tenba or any of the others. One important point you made about carrying a bag from one shoulder causing the “S” effect was more about something that should be ergonomic. Camelbac, non photographic backpack, are better ergonomic packs. Tenba like many other packs are nothing but a soft box with straps, so maybe these manufacturers should get in touch with Camelbac designers.

    • @DANIELMILNOR505

      I've been using Tenba bags for the past fifteen years and have traveled all over the world with them. They work really well, and this new one is awesome even when totally overloaded. (I test it over the past few days.) The S effect was from carrying a heavy bag on ONE shoulder over a ten year period. The human back wasn't meant for that. Every press photographer I know has the same issue. The pack eliminates this issue, at least it did with me.
