Lego Rotary Engine (Wankel engine)

- This is a model of a rotary engine (Wankel engine) made with Lego bricks. The model is based on the Mazda 13B-MSP "RENESIS" engine, which is mounted in the car Mazda RX-8.
This model is submitted to the Lego Ideas (August 19). I would like to ask your support:. I would like to ask your support:

This is the kind of stuff that Lego should sell as a product.
True, this stuff, and not this Ducati Race Bike (Only good for Parts restock) junk!
This could easily be a Lego Ideas set. And I would totally buy at least two.
Lego: 18-99
yes
I’d buy it. But I do have to say I built the bike. And it’s dope af
The addition of the light brick really makes this an excellent model. Good work.
LEGO technic: rebuilding modern technology with horrendous tolerances!
(In all honesty, I was impressed to see this made!)
Gotta say, thx for explaining to me how a rotary works! Also very nice build. Im pretty young too, so using legos rally helped!
*slightly lower tolerances than an actual rotary engine
@@sneab-jp6du That is true 😆 I did read once how rotary engines have a problem with the engine block heating unevenly...
Akiyuki! you are a genius!
Not to be meant but the rotary engine is old not new

That was really cool but it was driving me insaine that the walls didn't stay in contact with the apex seals
I think that shape is just impossible to do in lego lol
Lol it’s realistic because most rx8’s don’t either 🤣
@@thereagan2001 LMAO
As an RX-8 owner I appreciate the creative way you illustrated how this amazing engine operates! I just wish I could change MY Apex seals that easily!! Lol
To quote one of my friends, even the Wenkel doesn't like the Wenkel design. Physics loves to break it.
@@kirknay Wankel might not be fond of being a Wankel but god does she sound awesome! I mean, i dunno if ive ever heard a single rotor, and only know the 2, 3, and 4, but they all sound great up there at 10k+ rpm.
@@PRXFpv Ikr, there's a guy around where I live with a 4 rotor RX7 with a huge turbo on it, it sounds almost identical to a Mazda 787B, especially at idle. It's incredible.
Same here my man! 😁
@@kirknay that's why you gotta add another rotor :D It also doesn't like being a wankel because too much heat is bad but it makes a lot of heat, and almost all of it on one side of the engine
The demonstration of the chamber shape @1:36 was absolutely beautiful!
lego has so much potential in teaching kids the basics of mechanics and electronics, this is the kind of stuff I'd love to see in schools
In my old school we had a robotics class.
I never got to take the class but when ever I had free time like during recess or before school hours I'd enter the classroom and play around with the vast legos, building and writing scripts to make the robots move around and complete tasks
Bro if THIS is the basics, I'm scared.
Instead we learn about 6 oranges that cost $99 for some reason is better than 8 oranges that cost $78. And how many John needs to buy for his dog to feed to his wife, that can eat 2 oranges at 8 miles per hour. Then we need to know how many seconds it will take to snort 87 grams of cocaine, which is what the person who that of these problems is on. Now we divide them to know how many cars are on highway 32 when it is 8:37.
Here comes an FD driver and he only has one line of conversation.

This would actually be a Rx8 engine or a 13b msp not the fd rx7 engine a 13b rew do to the side exhaust ports. 13b rew has peripheral exhaust ports.
Looks like your apex seals went bad mid build, such a shame
It's a Rotary, it would get broken anyways
@@thytor756 Who you kidding. Rotaries are darn near bullet proof. It is everything around them that breaks. Usually from all the heat they produce. Mine was good well over 100K it was the radiator that finally broke that made me give it up. And only because replacing the radiator cost more than the car was worth.
@@koloth5139 sure bud
Koloth Most cars easily reach 300k. I believe the big failing point of wankel engines are those seals.
@@Engineer9736 And a rotary will easily reach 300k as well if you're doing the maintenance. The seals do wear, but not any faster than piston rings if you're changing your oil properly.

this thing has probably got about as much compression as my rx8's engine...

The engine would have to be made out of metal legos and then the legos would have to be welded together.

As a long time rotary car fan (my first rotary car was an 85 RX-7 GSL) and even longer LEGO enthusiast, I salute you for an awesome video!
I've been wondering, how does this type of car engine work? You say you're a long time fan of these types, and I was hoping you could share some insight
TrainBoy227 YT Just like a typical 4 stroke engine that uses the up and down motion of the cylinders, connected to the crank shaft, to turn the drive shaft, the spinning rotors are connected to a crank shaft which in turns drives the drive shaft. Rotary engines have the benefit of putting out more horsepower for a given size engine (the Mazda R8’s 1.3 liter engine putting out 232 hp). Being smaller, the engines can be mounted further back (behind the front wheels) and lower to the ground meaning you can design a better handling car around a rotary engine. Also, rotary engines also have fewer parts.
However, rotaries are not as fuel efficient as their four stroke counterparts and require more dedicated maintenance. Failure to perform routine maintenance, like oil changes will result in premature failure. Lastly, the seals at the tips of rotors (the apex seals) will only last so long (60k to 100k miles - maybe a little longer if the engine not driven hard) and need to be replaced. However to do so means pulling out the engine and opening it up to access the apex seals.
All in all, rotaries are quirky engines and require more attention but they are amazing to drive and they love to be pushed to their redline. It is not an engine for an every day commuter that just wants a point A to point B vehicle, it’s an engine for a driving enthusiast that will appreciate its quirk and give it the maintenance it needs.
@@AstroNerd Another thing to point out is that the actual rotors inside the engine rotate at 1/3rd of the speed of the "crank" aka eccentric shaft, therefore if one of these were to operate at 10,000 rpm for example, the rotors themselves would rotate at less than 4,300 rpm to be precise.
That LEGO rotary probably last just as long as the ones in the pre face lift rx8.
Akiyuki: makes Lego Wankel engine
Me: he can't make it brap, can he?
Akiyuki: 3:12
If you listen carefully. The rotary is saying "Brap Brap Brap Brap Brap"
2:53 made me whoa with understanding
Keep in mind that he only shows one side of the rotor (equivalent to one cylinder), for clarity. In reality, all three sides of the rotor act simultaneously, similar to a three-cylinder engine.
Pyrrha Nikos And with 2 rotors, super smooth.
And then they added the light that was synced to it.
@@timehunter9467 I know... my first car was an RX-7 FC. Still kick myself that I sold it...
@Pyrrha Nikos big oof, I’d like a 787B just because it’s got 4!
