    Honestly, I am a 31 year old game development student at University in the UK (First Year). I have kids and in specific a two-year old that lives with me and after switching careers during covid after I completed a Software Engineering course. This channel is great and it would be awesome to see how you managed to "learn" through career changing at a mature age with a family. The biggest milestone I have faced is doing this around family-time, with my partner also having a career.
    Keep it up, subbed for sure!

      My son is 2.5 and it is not freaking easy, I admit. I'm super fortunate that my day job provides enough for my wife to be a full-time mom. But I've gotten pretty good at watching tutorials on youtube with my phone in one hand and a bottle for my 8 month-old in the other :) I think its a cool thing to be a sw engineer in the post-pandemic world because you can work from anywhere. You are awesome for making it happen.

    • @MrSparkleYT
      @MrSparkleYT Год назад +7

      @@advancenine No I fully agree, that's great! Yeah our career came at a point where we lost our eldest daughter during labour, then covid hit and we had time to think. We both decided to pursue new careers. However, Covid in the UK meant a lot of time together (due to nation-wide lockdowns, so mid-studying for qualifications and an un-expected but welcoming 2 year old sister for our late daughter now exists here and boy I agree, it has been a challenge!!
      It's nice to hear about your supportive partner! But yeah, in regards to the bottle trick you was doing. There has been many of nights, I have offered the late night shift, just so I can squeeze those hours in for practice xD.
      Quick question, do you happen to have your own Discord community setup yet, this could be something that would help show your games developments and entice people to the product?

      I recommend devoting yourself to a good course not the ones you follow copy-paste what the instructor does, but a really interactive one that challenge you, take 20 minutes a day to start with, but do it everyday this will become a habit and you will be good in no time, if you practice like 3 hours only on weekends your progress will be slow, so in other words divide and conquer. Good luck in your new hobby, you are still young to do the change, I did it at 34 and it´s going great.

    Saw a post of yours on Reddit regarding this project. Keep it up, it's looking great. Always remember, no matter how hard it gets, finishing a project feels better than working on a project. The ability to look back and say, "Hey, I did that. It's a thing I did and it is out there for everyone to see. I made something." To you and anyone watching, there's a power in that and it makes the whole process worthwhile. The sleepless nights, the banging your head on the keyboard, the self doubt. Don't ever stop, you got this. You've all got this.

    I was always overwhelmed by thinking my games would need to be 30-50 hours long to stand out. But I have now seen time and time again, that a short game can do just as well.

      Sometimes even better, specially for smaller devs. If you are a new studio or indie dev showing your first game, it's far more likely that people will give it a chance if it takes them a couple of hours to complete than if it takes them 30 hours. Those huge time commitments are usually reserved for huge AAA experiences or devs that people know they can trust to deliver a experience worth spending all of that time.

    • @mattmurphy7030
      @mattmurphy7030 Год назад +3

      Making 30-50 hours of content by yourself is virtually impossible. AAA games have THOUSANDS of employees and barely hit 30-50 hours most of the time.

    You totally got the right approach, your experience from releasing games shows immediately.
    Some tips as I'm currently prepping for a top down style game myself. In my project I attached the cinemachine camera (virtual camera?) to an anchor point that's directly parented to the player, whose local position can then potentially be used to create offset (pan the chamera, or lower it).
    Cinemachine also offers softening / damping, gentle camera sway (so it isn't entirely static) and movement prediction so that it pans a little bit in front of where the player character is heading.
    There's way more, you can have the camera orbit around the player in a circle while still remaining focused on the player target for example.
    Alright that's it. Good luck!
