The HST stop signs were used during the Olympics as some of the sailing was done at Weymouth and they used HST due to the amount of people wanting to travel.
IIRC one HST ran from Bristol to Weymouth and back on summer Sundays up until 2015-2016
Not going to lie, I thought that the new castle hst reigonal sets were gonna be used. I thought this because with the hst already replacing older multiple units, like the class 150. I would not be surprised if this is actually implemented in the near future, and why would they upgrade their mark 3 coaches? To not use? XD
Of course, I do understand why they were used in the time of the olympics, however I could have thought of way more better ideas (like combine 3 class 158 units to make a 6 car train, as there were over 100 sets built, so there wouldn't be a "shortage"), so you don't reduce the amount of hsts on the mainline out of london. Don't hesitate to give any rebuttals about my essay of a comment (second opinions)
damn man u look like voldy
@@nachiketkejriwal9433 i bet you look like stephen hawking but if he was ugly
My family and I went to the sailing at Weymouth in 2012. We drove down rather than taking the train, but even if we did it would have been a SWT 442 from Waterloo in all probability.
I think the GWR colour scheme I think is the best of all the train services.
GWR used to run a Summer Saturday only HST from Bristol to Weymouth and return for a couple of years called The Weymouth Wizard.
I had the pleasure of visiting Britain 🇬🇧 in 2005 along with my son. We did spend a day in Bath. I must say that if you haven't visited Bath, it is well worth going out of your way to see. It is lovely and the Roman baths are incredible. I think Bath and Canterbury are a must for all visitors to Britain.
Aren't you nice
I live on this line! Haha! GWR keeps on saying that they will upgrade the capacity on this line however its been 4 years.
Also at trowbridge you can change for the Transwilts line. Nothing special just thought to point that out.
Amazing video. Can't wait for the next one
Thanks Dylan. I enjoyed the ride on this scenic country route. I really like the elegance of the GWR livery too - both exterior and interior.
Thanks Dylan. I would dispute one comment you made though, I think Weymouth station is quite delightful and probably fits well into its surroundings. Being in the town centre I cannot see why it would need lots of amenities apart from the essentials like a ticket office and toilets. Great video Dylan. Cheers, Bob
Beautiful green train in a beautiful green landscape!
I can’t believe it but for some reason these GWR 158’s look like brand new, even being 30 years old. Nice vid by the way!
Those 158s have great, comfy seats.
Beautiful villages or towns along that route. The interior of that train was pretty. Loved the green and gray combination.
These videos are so much better with the new audio narration. Excellent! 😊👍
Wow, the scenery between Bradford-on-Avon and Avoncliff was gorgeous! I want to live there! That poor little train looked rather lost in the immensity of the Bristol station. You could misplace it entirely in a station like Waterloo. 😂 Another fun journey. Thanks, Dylan.
went there for new year, stunning little valley, there happens to be a scenic walk between the two towns, then you can get the train back as they are very common! if you ever happen to be in the area i highly recommend.
Yay! A 158! I love this classic train :D
Thanks for filling in another gap in my UK travels between Westbury and Bristol via Bradford on Avon. Back when I was planning my 2018 extravaganza, I had planned to travel from Stourbridge Town to Torquay using a Great Malvern to Portsmouth service between Worcester Shrub Hill and Salisbury but got stymied by a Track Possession in the Bristol Parkway vicinity and ended up diverting from Worcester to Reading to Basingstoke and then taking up my original plan along the South Western Line to Exeter.
GWR have done well with their interior presentation of the Class 158 units. Pity about the flimsiness of the tray tables though.
Another point of interest for you though. Melbourne has a suburb in the Dandenong Ranges named Upwey. It is on the Belgrave line (en route to our famous "Puffing Billy Railway") and the station features an island platform with a remotely controlled crossing loop (similar to those on the West Highland line in Scotland)
Cheers from Downunder.
Last time I did that route was in Mk2 coaches behind a class 37 diesel loco, but then it was about 20 years ago!
I used to use the line from Dorchester West to Bath/Bristol on a regular basis to avoid the even worse overcrowding on the Portsmouth-Cardiff services, as posters have said there used to be HST workings on Summer Saturdays, whether they'll use short sets this summer or in the future remains to be seen.
Great video as always Dylan . Loved the scenery even the beach views . Loved it all . And a great looking day for traveling. . Take care
Nice video, well filmed, and as you say beautiful scenery which you really picked out. But also good comment about overcrowding, which is all too common! Do one on MCR- Cardiff in a two car DMU. You'll have to stand all the way! Outrageous TfW.
158s are decent enough trains, if a bit noisy. The are a little claustrophobic, but they do have lots of seats, especially compared to the 185s that replaced them on TransPennine services (too many doors!).
Nice little video Dylan with pleasant scenery. Thanks you sharing
I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't the end of the line and the trains used to continue down the middle of the road to the harbour. Sadly the Health and Safety brigade put a stop to that.
I love your honest commentary. Like you, I abhor brightly lit railcars that remind me of an all night laundromat or 7-11.
Finally I can relate. I’m often on these trains weekly so I can understand any opinions!!
The HST stop boards were for the Summer Saturdays train to and from Weymouth which has not run during covid. This was in response to the sometimes severe overcrowding on the 2 car sets at this peak time. In the past some diagrams were for loco hauled services, sometimes double headed. This has been my local line for almost 50 years and has seen some interesting workings in that time but not so much now. Very much enjoyed your video.
Very much my old stomping ground, as I lived in Bristol between the ages of 20 and 27. Last time I remember doing the whole trip to Weymouth was in a power twin, first generation dmu - which absolutely flew over the then jointed track between Castle Cary and Dorchester West; and our return was by a class 33 loco with five corridor Mk 1 coaches! I think it was on my 23rd birthday - so just before class 150s were introduced in 1987 (Cardiff - Portsmouth services were given class 155s and later, 156s around the same time). I'm absolutely flabbergasted to see so many people waiting on the platform at Frome - in those days it was never any more than about 3 or four people and indeed, some trains even by-passed the town!
Very nice. Thank you for sharing!
A most enjoyable video. Well done.
That was a excellent trip report ! Looks like a very scenic trip.
Thank you for sharing it with us... :):):)
GWR are (once the class 150 sprinters have gone) going to run castles on several stopping services
My favorite DMU, thanks for the great trip report
Absolutely beautiful! Makes me long for spring.
Another good video showing some great scenery 👍
Wow, what a stunning looking route. It’s on my list for my visit to the UK in the summer. Thank you Dylan! 😄
You should go to Portugal instead of the British Empire
@@budapestkeletistationvoices no. No. No.
Thank you for a most interesting review. The GWR 158s have been nicely refurbished, but as you highlighted, overcrowding on the Weymouth route is often very unpleasant. A 2-car unit is too small, and sometimes two units are coupled together, but that should be the case all the time !
Beautiful scenery..seemed like a pleasant day trip.
That's a lovely and scenic route on a 158
certainly a nice scenic route. thanks again
Great video!
Thanks, Dylan! I watched your video.
Rather shocked at the lack of masks in 9/21. This format is really cracking Lad! So much better.
That was a very jolly trip 😊. Lovely scenery and even though the train got quite full there was a cheerful buzz from the passengers. I enjoyed it.
Thanks for another great video.
Although I was surprised that you didn't show the old railway lines that go to the harbour.
GWR (First Great Western) used to run Bristol to Weymouth summer weekends HST'S, using full length HST's.
Why no longer tho?
@@georgedowns4034 because GWR use HSTs as castle sets
Bath is indeed a beautiful city - and definitely some wonderful looking places along this particular route - do want to travel to some of these places at some point!
Living on the South coast and making full use of a family railcard when children travelled for a pound! Have taken this route many times!
Entirely agreed with all comments!
An entirely lovely route!
Great trip report
Nice coverage
HSTs were on this route during the summer but I think on Saturdays only. Similarly there were FGW HST services to Pembroke Dock, but again, Summer Saturdays only. I travelled on the latter once but it took forever , made enjoyable by the drop down windows on the doors of the HSTs so that I could lean out. Good video as always.
Great video
Great trip.
The heart of wessex line is also used for when SWR operate summer services down to Corfe Castle via the heritage railway there.
Beautiful scenery
Great video👍👍👍
I live on this line and work on the signalling equipment in the area - you were lucky to get a 158! Most of the services are done by the scabby 166s with 3+2 seating, no tables anywhere to be seen, a lack of plugs/USB chargers in a lot of them and an extremely irritating whine that comes from the air conditioning.
Love your videos, i am from Norway
Putting only two coach train is always gonna get jammed packed
A beautiful route all round through Dorset and between Bradford on Avon and Bath.
Dylan, you need to come to Canada and take VIA Rail to a destination (like the _Canadian_ from Toronto to Vancouver) or _if_ you're here in Toronto, take a trip on a *GO* Transit ( *Government* of *Ontario*) train to Niagara Falls-you'll enjoy it, a lot.
Nice vdos Dylan
I love this line, the 166 trains as well, it is local to me, the liveries on these trains and 166'0s, and especially how comfy the 158s seats are! GWR 158s have the comfiest seats in the UK (that I have been on), beating the 170s!
I much prefer the 158s to the 166s .
The class 165/166s are probs the most boring trains around tho
@@georgedowns4034 I disagree, they still have character compared to other trains.
@@LWR1 so who do u think takes the crown then?
@@georgedowns4034 I personally think that 150s/156s are dull.
Call me daft but i've always liked the sounds of the 158 engines
Very nice ❤️❤️❤️
going to be catching this to tankfest this june ☺️
The HST signs are for the old Weymouth Wizard summer Saturday HST service from Bristol :)
Wonderful trip beautiful scenery what more can anyone ask for
Canadian here. There's a surname in my family "Froome", which is pronounced the way you say Frome. North Americans will pronounce Frome as Froh-m. Its just what we grow up with.
amazing video dylan mate i loved the interia and livery but i prefer my northern 158s and livery
6:45 the hst stops were due to a Saturday summer service to fit more people in 2016-2018 (around that time)
I enjoyed the journey. I was a bit surprised by the price. You've had some trips that were much longer & much cheaper. The leg room is ridiculous. That wouldn't be comfortable for anyone. The seats seemed fine, but.......... It was a busy train. I do enjoy seeing the sights thru your eyes. See you on Friday.
Gwr don’t really do advanced fares on this route and the Cardiff and Portsmouth route.
I remember this line from my childhood - I used to live at Toller which was on the now closed branch line from Maiden Newton to Bridport. Good to see good usage of the line. As you can see from your report there isn’t a lot of opportunity for passengers on the stretch from Dorchester to Pen Mill
HSTs used to run summer Saturdays.
The GWR Class 158 DMUs are very reliable. I have been on the Class 158 on South Western Railway from London Waterloo to Salisbury but not on Great Western Railway.
I expect that you have pointed this out in previous programs but on 158s and 159s ( 350-400h.p.) it is worth sitting away from engines if you can get one of those seats. 170s (425 h.p.) are the best of the dmus of that period for lower engine noise and insulated suspension.
A hst Castle set stop that runs now on the regional services
Hi nice DMU. :)
A crowded train was something new. I've gotten used to your background being absolutely silent. Nice scenery with a few too many hedges here and there but really opening up with beautiful views around the River Avon. I'd think there would be more difficult town names to pronounce in Wales.
"Gotten" Says all we need to know. Or is it Kno?
I don't _know_ if HSTs have used this route, but I could punt a guess. There has in the past been a seaside special from Derby to Skegness on summer Saturdays using HSTs. May be similar?
Noisy but nice trip..
Ayyy Trowbridge my home
Done that trip a few times between Bristol and Bath. Absolutely rammed everytime I have travelled. A 2 car train is rediculous
I do love me a good super sprinter
I always wanted to see what the other end of the line was like. If I'm taking the intercity to London which departs from Gloucester at about 7:47, the inbound train leaves at 7:38
A day ranger is cheaper then a single? Thats mad!
Ah...castle Cary is my local 🤣 you came on in the rarer platform 3
That’s a refurbished class 158 as the non refurbed trains had the blue FGW seating
Full marks for Frome, but Keynsham is pronounced as Kane-sh'm. If you want another example of hard-to-get-right place names, how about the village in Sussex where I grew up - Herstmonceux? Another interesting trip!
Great video Dylan. I still wish the class 158 in their edited 3 carriage formation still ran the vast majority of the Cardiff - Portsmouth rather than the class 165 and 166 turbo's
The Turbos are awful for those longer distance routes aren't they, they should only be used on short distance commuter routes.
Yes not many 158s on that route. I had one from Bristol to Southampton last Saturday though
Yes not many 158s on that route. I had one from Bristol to Southampton last Saturday though
@@s125ishhow many 158s are on the Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central services?
@@JC-il6psWell I Mean The Turbo's Were Bulit Originally For Commuter Services Out of London Paddington and London Marylebone In The 1990s And They Still Do It Now Out of Marylebone But Sadly Not Paddington That Much Anymore Because Those Rubbish 387s Showed Up
Casual Train, nothing too special, no worries!
Westbury also serves Brighton a couple of times a day. However GWR are withdrawing their trains that run from/to Brighton mid-May 2022. 😔
How about doing a report on the Cambrian coast line with the 158's they use on that
Hello, I suggest you do the Class 444 from there. Great video.
He did the 44 to poole
if im honest i just stay sat with the extra legroom with the tray table and 4 seats
U should do a "sprinter battle" which toc has the best 158 swr, gwr, scotrail, emr, tfw
The refurbished EMR ones look very similar to this one
@@andrewwilson6240 just looked it up and ye ur right
8:48 I've did a video here nice little station
Looks like a 3 car train would be better - despite all the new stock on UK rail, still getting overcrowding on these third tier routes and a serious underinvestment in stations
Weymouth 's dismal depot looks like crappy Amtrak stations.
They use 3 car 166s but not as comfortable
I don't like the seating arrangement. I can't imagine a long trip having to face someone you don't know. Otherwise, looks like fun.
PS -- Nice to finally see what you look like without the mask.👍
Frome: I must’ve heard someone say it correctly once somewhere, because I guessed ”Froom” in the Jay Foreman’s “Map Men” video on place names in England and I was right.
Power sockets must have been put in when they were reupholstered
Is Chentnole still the least used station in Dorset?
