Bob Catlin SA Slayer
S.A. Slayer was one of Central Texas’ most celebrated underground metal bands until its final chapter in 1984 (Jason calls them the Texas version of Mercyful Fate). With recent news of reunion gigs booked at the 2025 Hell’s Heroes and Keep It True festivals, we caught up with guitarist Bob Catlin for an update and history lessons, including the infamous 1984 Slayer vs. Slayer gig, the highly collectible 1983 “Prepare to Die” EP, his foray into industrial metal with Evil Mothers and Pigface, and how former S.A. Slayer singer Steve Cooper was the coolest cat in the room.

I grew up in San Antonio and once I was old enough in the early 80s, spent many weekends seeing local bands from San Antonio, Houston, and Austin. I have seen most of these bands, many more than once. I left for the Army in 1987 and when I came back from Iraq in 1991, one of Bob’s bands was the first show I saw live. Petting Zoo. That was a damn good band as well.
Thar was so Awesome 🤘 It's always a pleasure to be around Bob. I remember hanging out at his house when he recorded a few songs for The DAYZY Chain 🤘
