Erich Fromm on Sigmund Freud - Man is not a thing (1962)

Two points:
1. WHY are some "materials" not in awareness? The point is that it's not about the trivial fact that obviously we dont hold in our awareness all our memories of all our experiences. Rather it is about those that are barred from consciousness or awareness either because of the intolerable pain of the memories or because of their conflict with the person's moral principles (especially those represented in the super ego).
These "unawares" are not easily retrieved, on the contrary, they are surrounded by strong walls of protections from the awareness. And this is why they create so much trouble to the person, and why it requires such a skill from the therapist.
2. Some of Freud's problems with his own revelations were the shock they created in his community, whose secrets they found threatening to be revealed. It was not (which would be difficult enough) that people had to consider their own unacceptable subconscious and concealed wishes and drives, but that in actuality there was a lot of immoral behavior in Freud's close circles which was now to be uncovered by the testimonies of the patients, which were now beginning to come out to the light.
So Freud's genius was among other things in his daring to challenge very dark devils of his time and society.

You make a great point about caucasian male schools of analysis practicing immoral illegal behavior like it is no big deal
this is more prevalent than ever
for example when the internet started there was no child porn on the net now there is so much illegal child pornography it is as if everyone is a pedophile it makes more money than all major telecoms combined & nobody cares
In the face of AI capabilities nobody cares
thus even academics (my own 'liberal' severely mentally ill sibling is a Fulbright & pro criminal pediophilia & domestic abuse she avoids criminal records & acts like they are not real not realizing that not everyone has this entitlement to ignore their own criminal histories)
these pro crime academics think that this means it is time to normalize criminal abuse along side science & that is totally unironic & unhinged but they believe it so much that they target & abuse anyone online who fights crime or fights against crime
All of this is a dark period like when Goya made a dark series of paintings in the dark alone: it is like Goyas painting Saturn eating his son it is suicide it is cannibalism that no one is addressing
Cannibalism of all work & information & science: the extremely abusive enslavement of children & women by other women & men alike
androcentricity has women as the scapegoat for everyones inadequacies the 'patch up' for 'race problems' ( "we all get along if we blame this random woman here now we have race figured out") & marriage problems ( "we all get along if we blame this random woman here now we have marriage figured out with trafficking, hookers & porn") sexual dysfunction ( "we all get along if we blame this random woman here now we have sexual dysfunction figured out") &ETC
This is really about untested--- intellectual limitation/s : 'it is all a woman's fault '& women join -- just as much as men--- scapegoating their own gender -- even as they rake in money $$$$ lecturing everyone about feminism or stripping naked & selling their body like meat cuts
The longer everyone ignores this elephant in the room the faster we all reach the end of our species
Dean Snow discovered that women invented painting from hand size: at a time when feminism didnt exist
this is because no one can paint when being criminally abused so the cognitive reality was totally different then because these women were all treated like treasure & they made masterpieces that rival modern art
but of course no one cares because other women are slaves & scapegoats inferior & must be blamed for everything & totally ignored & not allowed any reality or personal history but being a punching bag for only the most inferior women & men to abuse to 'make everything seem 'normal' they will never be able to prove other wise you cannot commit , ignore, & fight crimes at the same time can you??
