  • A quick trip from Brindley Place up the Birmingham Canal to Wolverhampton and back. Nice towpaths through lots of industrial heritage, with a long scary tunnel along the way which turned out to be a lot longer and darker than I expected.

Thanks. I love cycling in this area. I've got another trilogy of videos up showing us leaving Leamington Spa, riding through Birmingham to Wolverhampton and beyond. Then down a disused railway before turning onto the Staffs and Worcs Canal. We stopped at a pub in Womborne before carrying on to Stourton and turning back to Birmingham on the Dudley Canal - riding through the Netherton Tunnel. Incredible day.

I had intended to use my lighter hybrid bike but I had various problems with it just before this trip, so, ended up dusting the cobwebs off this MTB which belongs to my son. I've just looked at the likely route on Google Maps - looks like the Shropshire Union Canal would get you from Ellesmere Port to Wolverhampton, then you could pick up the Birmingham Canal Main Line (which I ride on this video) into the centre of Birmingham. It comes in at about 82 miles - nice ride! I've never ridden the Shropshire Union, so I have no knowledge of its suitability for cycling. When I ride new canals, I plan a route using Google Maps and Garmin Connect Software. Strava has a similar route planning facility, but personally, I prefer Garmin connect as I'm more used to it.
