Cycling around the Zwin Natuur Park to Sluis
Having started at De Panne and ridden the length of the Belgian coast (see

Cycling from Reading to Slough along the Thames

A nice, worthwhile ride, but tough in places and marred by the sheer number of 'kissing gates' we encountered. This was part of our plan to join up or rides covering the canal network from Avonmouth to London. Just Hungerford to Reading left to do now.

Having returned to Oostburg after a great day visiting Middleburg, Veere and Vlissingen, it was too perfect a night not to go out for a little finale ride to the coast and the picturesque little town of Cadzand-Bad to enjoy the peace and quiet in Zeeland.

This video inspired me to go on my own trip from Calais to amsterdam in 2025, so thank you!
@@cobym2262 Thanks - I'm sure you'll have a great time. That part of Europe is perfect for cycling.
Liked the video, but could not stand the nusic any longer /si turned offeadful,
@ttonypayne5077 To those who fail to appreciate the reasoning behind the "nusic" (sic) choices I make, the volume control is a handy thing.
Brilliant
It was a good ride to do. No problems riding through the tunnel.
🤣🤣🤣 that's typical..I was looking at buying a property on the Aylesbury spur between Bates boat yard and merry mead farm and you cut that section out...never mind it was a nice ride all the same!!!.🤣🤣🤣
@caravanstuff2827 Thanks. Sorry your bit didn't feature, but glad you still liked the video. Living alongside a canal sounds like a great idea.
Fond memories Steve. Great video and soundtrack!
@davidmortimore254 It was another great weekend - looking forward to doing something like it again next time.
Enjoyed this but you missed so much out and the music could do with being ditched
I have been looking at this route for some time, I have done a few tow path distance cycles before but always get to that part in a route where I miss the bridge to cross in order to miss the dead end or wrong direction, I don’t suppose you have any notes you could share on the bridge crossing etc Like others have said, I couldn’t do it in one day, in my twenties/thirties I could of but now it’s a tootle, coffee stop, sandwich stop, sight see lol respect for doing it in a day
@@TimmyTours I don't have the route documented I'm afraid. I've learned it all largely through trial and error. Most of the times that the towpath switches from side to side, it's pretty obvious what to do. The only times you need to be wary is when you're nearing canal junctions so as to avoid being forced to turn somewhere you don't want to go. Do you use Garmin? The route planner is pretty good and usually knows when to switch sides during route planning. Failing that, zoom in on Google maps - the towpaths are usually pretty clear, then make a note of any landmarks (pubs usually do it for me) and figure out how many miles it is from when you pass something until you need to think about what side you need to be on. Even if it goes wrong you shouldn't ever have to backtrack very far and it's usually possible to hump bikes over lock gates - i.e you don't necessarily need to wait for bridges.
Very good road surfaces. Streeting a chopper here in Kowloon beats me up!
Doing this soon, Northampton to London to raise money for course.any useful tips 👌
@@fabiobear3089 I've ridden London to Northampton twice - 95 miles. For me, it's about eight hours of riding time, plus stopping time. Pleasant enough when dry, but I wouldn't fancy doing it if it was muddy and slippy. There's a mixture of surfaces - grit, tarmac, bare earth and grass and it can be quite tough on the wrists. There's a couple of really long sections between towns - South of Blisworth and also South of Leighton Buzzard. It can feel quite remote on those bits. You'll have to go over the top of the Blisworth Tunnel, but that's quite straightforward. Obviously, it's flat and traffic free, but keep your wits about you as there'll be dogs, kids, joggers etc. Also be wary of the edge, of mooring bollards and how close passing cyclists come. Ring a bell before passing under little bridges as you may not be able to see if there's anything coming the other way. If you plan to stick canal-side all the way, plan ahead to see where you can stop for drinks/food etc. There could be miles and miles between facilities. Hope that all helps, but if there's anything else you want to know just pop more questions up. I hope it goes well and would love to hear how you get on.
Thanks, it was mainly a very nice trip down Memory Lane and I could still feel those cobbles as your camera shook. The sections that I wasn't familiar with looked great and it all looked so very civilised.
A good worthwhile ride to do. Very poignant in places.
Thanks for posting this, it was a great mixture of fond memories and hopefully future discoveries. I can't believe how far you got before stopping for lunch and you still finished by 13:00 ... that massive spag bol must have been packed with energy. I was surprised how much more there was after Oostende, I'd love to do that one day. The music was great, especially the Sandstorm section and you can't beat a good Flemish banger.
It was a pleasure to do and fairly effortless really. I'm sure you'll love it.
Great vid, in fact I'm loving your vids mate, brilliantly done, nice bit of Brummie legends ELO to kick start this vid too, very fitting!! 🙂🙂
Thanks, I always aim to incorporate music specific to a area, or that is in some way memorable to my time there. Sometimes the tracks might be in-jokes relating to specific circumstances. Glad to hear you like the videos. I've got quite a lot more Midlands-based ones up as I do like it up there.
Yeah I thought that especially when Slade came on as you got to the black country, glad you like it up here the midlands, Birmingham and the Black country are great places with plenty to see and do there and of course they both have a lot of interesting history 🙂@@duveleffe1701
@mrlardster Keep an ear out for more Midlands tracks in the Day 2 and 3 videos. I drew the line at Musical Youth though.
Yeah will do mate and I can't say that I blame you for that 😂😂@@duveleffe1701
Thanks for sharing this, it's very nicely done. It looks a great route and you were blessed with nice weather, I'd like a dabble myself some time soon. Another excellent choice of music and a nice tribute to Bruce at the end.
It was a great ride to do. Well worth the effort of travelling up there. Tranquil flat disused railway lines, amazing tunnels and probably one of the best stretches of canals I've ever ridden. Topped off with the Foxton Locks Inn - such a superb location. On the way back, we stopped again at another pub called the Brampton Halt, just behind Pitsford & Brampton Station which was also really good.
Even though I live 70 miles away Foxton locks are one of my favourite places in the UK to visit. I agree the Inn there is really good.
I live in Kent, so getting there is a bit of a mission - but well worth it. I stumbled across the locks by accident on a trip from Leicester to Northampton via canal last year. I've got a video up showing that ride too.

Kings wood junction to Birmingham 2 hours 🚴
Well done.
Do you have the GPX file for this route?
It's an easy enough route to follow - I just rode alongside the canal through Solihull, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Braunston, Stoke Bruerne, Milton Keynes, Berkhampsted and onwards to London. There's a couple of tunnels to cross over at Braunston and Blisworth but the routes over the top are pretty obvious. Then, at London (Bull's Bridge), there's a couple of options depending on whether you go on to Brentford or Paddington. If you just Google 'Grand Union Canal Route', there'll be plenty of entries presented to show you the way.
The IWA used to do a walking route from Gas st, Brum to Regents canal London including overnight stays such as B&Bs and campsites. I think I may still have it from 25 years ago. The EEC helped finance the upgrading of the towpath for bicycles but it seems they've probably been neglected over time again. At least it's mainly downhill to sea level I think. I never got around to doing it unfortunately because I went sea sailing instead ending up as crew on tall ships after a heart bypass surgery. Too old now.
There's running events that do it too, over two days. At the end of this video, I pass a few of the athletes. On another of my videos we're heading towards Birmingham and pass them not long after they'd started ruclips.net/video/3Y-G0GydPS8/видео.htmlsi=nEEc-mDYegqFEkLC -
Loved this! Wonderful music and camera. But please please please display or link a map of the path you took. Some of us fans aren’t familiar with England but would like to do this trip too someday. 🙏🙏🙏 I’m off to Scotland next week to ride the canal from Edinburgh to Glasgow.
Thanks for your kind comment. I've got Edinburgh to Glasgow firmly on my to-do list. You should find the Falkirk Wheel quite fascinating. I'd love to hear how you get on. I'll see if I can figure out a way to include maps/links or whatever. Meanwhile, if you can access the "Open Canal Map" App, that will give you a great insight into the UK canal network. I've got lots more Canal rides on my channel too - a lot of which are in the Midlands region. Safe travels....
Nice route mate. Thanks
plan to do this trip on the chopper bike....one day
Good luck with that - take plenty of spare nuts and bolts to replace those that get shaken out!
well done
That's a great video, and it looks a lovely ride complete with tunnel and ferry. I learned a lot about the area and its geography and the footage promotes how interesting and peaceful it is. As ever the soundtrack hit the spot and I now know Dire Straits weren't singing about a City in Spain.
It was great to get back up to my homeland and I hope to be back soon. Going through that tunnel was a big tick on my to-do list. When I'm putting these videos together, I often struggle to find music that isn't just repeating the same old stuff - but there was so much material that fitted this ride perfectly, it was an easy one to do. Most of the tracks are meaningful or sentimental to me in one way or another. The Spanish City was a huge part of my childhood.
Thinking about getting a chopper, owned a mk2 when I was a kid, looked at a mk3 and it needs a few parts swapping the seat for one, not looked at the mk4, what is the largest frame size you can get? and what about e-bike legal conversion?
I'm afraid I'm not the fount of knowledge on these. I'm from the time of the Mark 1s and 2s. I don't know anything about the later variants. I've heard it say from some of the lads on these rides that there was a 'Tall Frame' version of the Mark 1 I had my Mark 1 recreated at a specialist shop youngs-cycles.co.uk/ The chap there is really knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and I'm sure he'll have all your answers. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Love this thank you . I can't get out on bike these days for various reasons but I can use an exercise bike for short periods so I have been putting your videos on TV and having virtual rides . Having rode this route many many times it's a very welcome addition to my virtual rides .
Thanks. It was good to go through the Tyne Tunnel. This is the first time I've been back there in almost five years. Hopefully it won't be that long until my next visit. Sorry to hear you're not riding, but I'm glad to hear the videos help.
Hello, i just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I suffer a lot from anxiety and have real issues making myself get out and about on bicycle trips. Watching your videos are a real source of encouragement. I am planning a Dunkirk to Netherlands trip once the weather allows. Also great music choices.
Hi, thanks for watching, and thanks for your kind words. I’m often riddled with anxiety before a lot of my trips, so I always take every precaution available to me - I always make sure my bikes are professionally serviced, have good quality components and plan my routes as much as possible to stay close to railway lines so that, if there’s ever a problem, there’s always a route back to ‘civilisation’ should the worst happen. I have the most puncture-resistant tyres that are available and carry spare inner tubes/nuts/bolts/cable ties/locks/bike frame number etc. etc. and also tools to fix the most common problems. I’ve ridden from the French ports to Amsterdam three times, and have done countless other trips in France/Belgium and the Netherlands. They’re so much more geared up for the needs of cyclists over there, you’ll never be far away from help if you need it. If I can ever be of any help, just pop me a comment - I always reply. Take care and enjoy your cycling while you can.
Nice route. Dreadful music.
Turn the volume down then.

@@flachi32 Good for you.
@@duveleffe1701 What's that? Hawaiian noises? He's banging on the bongos like a chimpanzee!
That's such a good insight into the Newcastle area, much of the ride looked lovely. I really enjoyed the Geordie themed music - I couldn't place the theme tune about 50 minutes area, I used to watch it, maybe late 70s/ early 80s? Nice one with the photos, they looked great.
Thanks - it was a really enjoyable and varied ride. The section after the turn onto the Derwent was new to me and a really pleasant experience. The Waskerley Way goes quite a bit further beyond Consett, so getting right to the end of it is definitely on my list the next time I'm up there. I think the track you're referring to is 'Dancevision' by the Human League. I don't recall it being used as a TV theme, but it certainly sounds like the sort of thing that should have been. My next video will show the Tyne heading in the other direction - Out towards Wallsend and through the recently refurbished Tyne Cycle Tunnel before crossing back on the Shields Ferry and heading back up the coast into Northumberland.
We would love to see what the scenery would be like as you give us ideas when we do these videos for RUclips but we walk the route but do it in stages but we would love to see more and we shake your hand for that.

Can Aylesbury to Birmingham be done
Towpaths all the way - there's a couple of lumpy bits at Blisworth and Braunston where climbing up and over tunnels is needed, but they're not too much of an issue. There's a few rough sections when you're in remote areas - particularly in between Blisworth and Leamington Spa, which can be challenging, but passable, so don't let that put you off. It's a fantastic experience.
Hi just wanted to ask have you cycled from Aylesbury to birmingham on the Grand Union Canal From come outdoors with us
Hi, I've ridden from London to Aylesbury twice and I've ridden on the rest of the Grand Union several times - usually heading North from London and getting trains back, but also South out of Birmingham to a range of places, including to London in a day, but not specifically a single journey from Aylesbury to Birmingham
Only cycled through it once - it was fairly busy, the air quality was bad enough that I decided never again.
I guess I must have been lucky to have gotten a good day. It's probably best avoided at rush-hour I imagine.
Droitwich Spa is actually Stoke Prior Nevertheless a great video.
Leuk om hier nog eens doorheen te rijden... Hulst is mooi geworden.
Het is een leuke stad en ik kijk ernaar uit om op een dag terug te gaan en er meer tijd door te brengen.
Great
Thanks - it was a great day

4:22 dig the recumbent...looks like a Phoenix 700 (used to be Rans Recumbents). Relaxing video to watch. Voted & Sub'd.
Thanks for this, im watching the whole thing for research. Im planning to do most of this route soon on an electric bike with 4 batteries. Ill then recharge at a friends and do it again in reverse. It looks the sketchy bits are between warwick and milton keynes. As i only have 16" wheels and no suspension I might pop on and off down the country lanes at that section.
Thanks for watching. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic adventure. Yes, the section you mention is probably the most challenging. It's quite remote and therefore doesn't get much activity on it from other towpath users. A bit more insight in the section from Warwick to Braunston can be seen in this other video from 32.00 to 42.45 ruclips.net/video/DdKz6WlyyfY/видео.htmlsi=OdRYTudaHEZDJslz The roughest part, I'd say, is in between Napton Junction and Braunston. Good luck with it and I'd love to hear how you get on.
At 32:12 we pass each other. My late pup Wals is watching you ride past.
Were you heading far? That Tardebigge flight must take some time to get through?
i would just like to say what a fantastic video & the music to go with it as well 10/10 is there going to be one of these bike rides in 2024
Thanks. I don't know if anything like this is planned this year. If I hear, I'll post a comment. I've got a couple of other similar videos up - one recorded in Brighton and the other in Amsterdam.
Thanks for posting your ride, lot's of nice familiar sites and I really enjoyed your tour around Bergues at the end. When we were there the whole square was closed off for maintenance or something so we'll have to return to see it properly.
Thanks. I hadn't uploaded this video before as I'd already done a pretty similar one from the same trip. That square in Bergues seems to have had work being done to it for years. It's also evident in this video, which is a year and a half old.
I'm saving this video for future reference.Makes me so sad that English roads are generally shit for cyclists.
Fully agree with you there. It's really special cycling over there and I look forward to getting back at some point. I've got lots of other videos up which I filmed in the Netherlands too if you get the chance to check any of them out.

That's where our main storage areas were - but there was no direct access through the building. We used to be up and down with trollies of books two or three times a day.
