    My 3 year old child was very attached to his pacifier. We followed a very similar process to this. In case it helps anyone, we eventually got rid of it by taking him to a Build-a-bear shop, and let him put his dummy inside his new teddy bear and watch it get stuffed and sealed up. He then fell asleep with his new teddy bear. Had two nights of tears and then never looked back. He loved the idea and was very excited to get his new bear

    My son weaned himself off of the dummy at 11 months. He just stopped wanting it for a few days - would immediately spit it back out, even mid-crying (think he was dealing with some teething and it just irritated his mouth), so I kinda just went with it, rather than make a rod for my own back further down the road. I chucked them in the bin and never looked back. He hasn't missed them, either. All this did surprise me, however, as he was very much a dummy baby before then.

    • @EmmaHubbard

      Thanks so much for sharing! My son also did this too. He started to spit out the dummy at naps and bedtime at 5 months so I decided to remove it as he was no longer wanting it. It’s great when they give you clear signals that the dummy is no longer needed.

    Thanks for another helpful relevant video! Do you have a suggested age that you would take the pacifier away before they get too attached? My little one is 9weeks and I’m hoping to avoid getting too reliant on it in the first place…. I have noticed that sometimes she already fusses when it drops out in early sleep in the same breath, when she gets in deep sleep she often spits it out and resettles herself. 😅 I’m confused!!

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Год назад +3

      It can be really confusing. If you are open to stopping the pacifier earlier I recommend ditching it when your little one is between 4 - 6 months. At this age a baby's sleep matures and they start waking between sleep cycles and may start to wake up more frequently at night if they rely on a pacifier to fall asleep but it has fallen out during the night/nap. I hope that helps!

    I was addicted to sucking on my thumb to fall asleep and developed dental problems. I also had almost a bunion on my thumb. So my mum put woolen mittens on my hands at night. Sucking on them was such a hairy experience that my habit was over in no time. For some reason I was too well behaved to take them off myself.

      Hi! For an 18 month old you would still do the same steps - so limit the pacifier use to naps and bedtime, teach them other coping strategies (at this age it is more about you helping them calm back down by providing comfort and regulating their emotions), deciding on a date, then removing the pacifier at bedtime and helping them learn another way to fall to sleep without the pacifier.

      Hi! It's a little hard to tell you exactly why your little one is waking frequently throughout the night. One of the reasons might be because your little one uses an external sleep association to fall asleep and therefore wakes every sleep cycle to re-create that sleep association. For example if your little one is older than 4 months and needing to be fed, rocked, patted (etc) to sleep then it is highly likely your little one is waking between sleep cycles looking for this external sleep association to fall back to sleep. In this situation the way to get your little one to stay asleep for longer is to help them learn how to fall asleep without an external sleep association.

    Need advice. My husband unfortunately, in a fit of frustration/anger, took the pacifier away from our 2.5yo just before bedtime because she didn't want to be held by him (that's a different issue all together of her preferring me over him and it hurting his feelings). So she was forced to go to bed without. It's been a little over a week of no pacifier but she's still having a hard time at night of waking up and crying. To add to it, there have been a couple big events: she moved to a new room at daycare with new teachers, and she's recovering from a cold. It's hard to stay strong and not give in but I feel like she needs it back for just a little longer until she gets used to things again. Do I continue to stay strong even though it was so abrupt in taking it away? Or should I give it back temporarily? Please help.

    Babysitter/nanny here. 😊
    Here's what worked for the littles I watched.
    In the day time tell them you want to hear them talk and that you can't understand them when they have it in their mouth. Then politely remove it and encourage them to use their words. Never understand what they are saying when it is in their mouth and magically understand them when it is out. They will get frustrated with it on their own and will stop using it by choice.
    At nap time? Have it in another room so you have to go and get it. In my experience it went something like this.
    First time you are back instantly. Second time it takes you a minute. Third time a couple minutes. Fourth time five minutes and after about a week or two they eventually fall asleep without it. Then you can tell them "Wow! You don't really need it any more because you fell asleep without it on your own last time. You're growing up so fast!"
    Good luck!

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Год назад +3

      HI Rebecca you have already achieve the first step (limiting the pacifier to naps and bedtime). which is fantastic. The next step is removing it. At this age my preferred method is to go cold turkey as it can be confusing for babies to have pacifiers for naps but not bedtime.
      If you would prefer to do it more slowly you can remove the pacifier for bedtime and continue to offer it for naps (as when a baby naps during the day they are in lighter sleep and it can be tricker for them to fall asleep without the pacifier).
      However, either way your little one is going to have to learn how to fall asleep without the pacifier. This might mean you need to develop a plan on how to help your baby learn to fall asleep without a pacifier. Hope that helps.

    I’m a FTM and a SAHM of a 3 month old. My baby doesn’t really use a pacifier but prefers to use my breast to soothe him. I nurse him to sleep in a swaddle for a nap but sometimes feel it would be easier if he just took a pacifier since my boob can’t always be available to him. I’m noticing he likes sucking on his hands but will sometimes start to suck his thumb. I’m not sure if it’s best to encourage him to use a pacifier for nap time or not. He was soothed by it most in the very early weeks but lately only seems to like my nipple to calm him. Any insight or advice would be appreciated since this is all new to me. @@littlegreendress6243 I slept with my son until he was about 10-11 months old. I started drying up around that time since he was eating more and mostly using me for comfort.
      After that I sleep trained him in his crib. He was used to naps in there for a few months already. And judge this method or not, I knew what my son could handle. We did the CIO method. First night he screamed 45 minutes, second night 30 minutes third night about 15 min then he was cool. He usually only cries out at night when he’s sick or in pain now.
      Every child is different but I just went with the flow and followed his lead. I feel like I waited until he was old enough to learn to self soothe but young enough to not have a hard habit to break.
      Go with your gut. Where I am now with a 20 month old is way different than when he was 3 months old. Hang in there! 9 months seems like a good time to start pushing him to be a little more independent when he sleeps. Starting with naps in the crib was helpful I think.

      It really depends on when you want to drop the pacifier. You could do it now which parents often do if it is causing short naps and frequent night wakings. If you choose to continue to use the pacifier I would recommend you start limiting it to naps and sleep time only (so leaving it in the cot), as being pacifier free during the day will make it easier for your little one to talk/babble and reduce the risk of dental problems in the future.

    My daughters and grandson never used a pacifier. They didn't want it.

    My 10 month old only uses it at night to fall asleep. I’ve tried but he just cries to the point of vomiting if he doesn’t have it.

      I can only speak from my own experience, but we waited til 15 months to remove the pacifier at night. Now my son can fall asleep and stay asleep without it. You could try postponing removing it for a few more months.
