Dude youre really good at connecting the points... im an intuitive learner myself (completely self taught) and have figured out most of this by myself by now.l, however thank you for pointing out that Dorian/lydian and phrygian/mixolydian are the same scales, much appreciated! The breakthrough in modes for me was when i finally figured out that if you take C major scale and simply start playing from D you get 2nd mode, from E - third mode and so on :)) guitar is such a trip :D
I just got serious about playing again(in 96' my best friend/guitarist died and I quit for 15yrs). Then dabbled, till about a year ago. I have been adapting a new idea to playing(close to this), any scale can be learned by learning the 7(or 5) notes, then moving the root. Remember to go down 1 fret on the "B" string. They all actually wrap back around. This also helps people to learn where every note is a lot quicker. I recently found your channel. I just started a 2nd channel(I do knife making as my main channel) just for my music(old, new & lessons). Great work, love this lesson... Take it easy.
playing the guitar is a skill, but teaching and getting ideas and information across effectively is a gift. thank you, ive played guitar for two years and always overwhelmed my brain with the modes. i understand now perfectly
most informative eye opener of any mode lesson ive ever watched.. i had a feeling youd be the person to offer the best chance of understanding this. thanks my man
OMG this is great!! I've studied theory, but i've had a hard time memorizing the scales.. Using the pentatonic and seein the added notes was so helpful!! Thanks
Exceptionally good video, this is exactly the way i learned modes a while ago but i missed the intuitive part you mentioned here, where modes can be split in to the major/minor variants, this really opened my eyes more and now they seem much less intimidating. Another excellent exercise that helped me, maybe good idea for part 2 ;) is turning each of these modes into their corresponding chord progressions, so the feel of each mode is heard in rhythm and chord progressions... The diminished is always the fun one ;) Back in the day, I remember making a quick song for each mode to quickly illustrate the feel. Now i can sort of identify modes in popular music all the time. and have a good idea which genres adopts which modes.
Could you tell where did you learned it? I think it's interesting topic especially when i finally understood something about modes and scales after watching this video :D
I cant remeber from where, it was a long time ago, but its the same way you turn the major scale into chords, however the formula : [ Major-minor-minor-Major-Major-minor-Diminished ] keeps shifting with each mode. So since Dorian is the 2nd degree mode, the Chords would be [ m-m-M-M-m-Dm-M ] Therefore, for example A Dorian ==> Am, Bm, C, D, Em, F#Dim, G (play these chords after you run the scale, you will hear the exact same harmony) So Can you tell me what the chords for A Mixoledyian are?
TheSabatuer Thanks for answer! So my answers will look like this. If myxolydian is 5th degree mode so it goes [M-m-Dm-M-m-m-M] so i think chords are the same as for Dorian A, but in diffirent order (D,Em,F#Dim,G,Am,Bm,C)
Almost perfect, you got the chord families correct, but the A Mixo notes are not the same as the notes as A Dorian, remember in the video there were small changes, some notes added, some removed, those changes would change the chords as well. So A mixo is --> A, Bm, C#Dm, D, Em, F#m, G Try playing the scale then the chords in sequence and see if they match up. Then try making a progression with some of the chords start with A7 Best of luck and happy new year :D
TheSabatuer Ok, i think i get it. Thanks a lot man i hope i will understand this and maybe some day i will help someone as you helped me :D. Happy new year too!
The dog moved at 6:10! I never saw any of the dogs move in your videos. *lol* xD Oh and thank you so much for the videos!!! I know how to play piano but I didn't quite get into how the guitar "works". Your videos help a LOT! So thanks a million for taking the time to make these awesome videos. :)
Finally a colored, modified, and very well explained pentatonic pattern that shows the difference....For those with very little theory, include all five shapes with the mode changes...
0:50 (paraphrased) "How are you supposed to know the theory and which notes are offset in the scale" ===> With EYES! e.g. Eyes on even the cheapest keyboard makes everything MUCH clearer (even obvious) by comparing the C major scale to whatever other scale or mode is under discussion. "Wiping away" the subtleties and complexities of the (TWO dimensional) fret board and focusing on the ONE dimensional (LINEAR) keyboard helps clarify everything.
Your channel is one of the best one for learning to play guitar (and also music theory) well, holistically. Is there someone where a "map" of the videos, binding them into a curriculum or course is available ?
your awesome man. great lessons always! preface: im sure you dont beat your dogs. when the video starts the dogs are on thr couch and looking at you. then your on the couch. little dog looks skeptical. then you have the guitar and the little dog freaks out a bit, its not funny but it is funny to see his body language change so fast
I am a total guitar newbie and your videos help me a lot. Thanks for that! But I do not yet get the importance of scales. Why should I learn them? Should I at all? Some input from more experienced players would be much appreciated!
Thank you for this. You have no idea how badly I needed this. I just have one question. Is this applicable to the other four shapes of the pentatonic scale as well? I'm not fully done with the video yet, so apologies if you've already addressed this. I know I probably won't get a response back from the man himself but if anyone around here can help a fellow learner, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you!
I'm sure you figured this out by now but for anyone else yes as long as you know where your major and minor root notes are. All positions of the scales exactly contain the same notes with each one adding only one or two higher notes to the sound
I get it but it’s very fast & confusing. Would it not be easier to relate these to the chords, as you did in the finding minor/major chord video. So you relate the A shape to the root etc. The graphic’s very confusing showing all the intervals on one string rather than those that relate to what you're talking about?
Hello, sir. I started playing guitar and its been 4 months. I saw your Sherlock theme lesson and was wondering if you can do Doctor who them as well and if you could, please do Howl's moving castle theme. thank you for the videos
haha yes, pentaonic is the only scale I know on guitar! ok, so that's not unusual. and have felt a little boxed in, but if I can learn modes from this as a jump off point, then that's great news! will give this a try! ! thanks! :)))
Adolfo Costa hey thanks for this reply. I’ve been struggling with this concept for awhile now. Searching video after video trying to figure it out. But what you wrote or how you wrote it here makes sense to me. Thank you so much.
Hello sir! Amazing ! Is fingerstyle lesson of wonderwall by oasis anywhere next? Please try for that song. I just couldn't make it happen. Hope you'll give it a shot!
I know this technique of teaching the major minor but I never liked it because I actually found it more difficult. I actually think maybe in the beginning 3 frets was too big a jump ? My first teacher combined them all in charts . That way wasn’t easy either lol.
Great lesson but could you flip that image on the top left to actually match your fretboard? It is upside down mirrored now which is majorly (hehe) confusing 😅 Well at least to me....

I miss the old videos when he said "Hello this is Assfasaffg". By the way, great lesson. Best teacher in RUclips
I still don't know his name and I've watched hours of his lessons.
Blossom Russo Same here man, same here. Imagine if his name was actually "assfasaffg", lol
Blossom Russo same for me, he should write it someday
His name is Assaf Levavy, for those who haven't been able to make it out when he says it.
Names are for tombstones... I don't care. To me he's one of RUclips's most inspiring guitar teachers. Simple as that. :)
parts i got. combined with many days of work, this is really helpful. donation coming up. props.
Your method of teaching, compared to many others, Is More, Simple, Straightforward, and
Enlightening... you teach/explain well
most informative eye opener of any mode lesson ive ever watched.. i had a feeling youd be the person to offer the best chance of understanding this. thanks my man
The best explanation of the practical explanation of the modes I have ever heard. Well done and thank yiou
11yrs playing and now im finally learning. bro subbed. my god. ill finally be able to understand theory hopefully.
Great lesson! It's like it all makes sense now, thanks a lot for uploading and for making a great lesson without overcomplicating it!
I've always used the modes but you gave me a better understanding of how it works... Thank you... I'm a fan...

This is one of the easiest and simple explanations of modes I have seen, nice job.
Thanks a lot. It finally came clear to me after many years of frustration, i get it now. Very happy.
You are a genius man. Keep do video to us. Thank you for all
Finally learnt the modes. Great lesson. Keep up
Best mode lesson I know from RUclips. Thanks you!
Thanks so much for this lesson. Finally starting to make since..

Great Christmas present, your the best man. Truly the best. Thank you.
Great use of pentatonic thanks.
wish I saw this video years ago. Perfectly explained and easy to visualise.
Great approach! Been waiting for this the entire week. :)
Thank you so much as always.

You lost me with the green notes . Where did they come from? Did you add the major scale to the minor pentatonic scale?
i am beginner..so have u got a seprate intuitive lecture on pentatonic scales?
Great lesson!!!!

Complimenti come sempre! Potresti dirmi cosa usi per registrarti nei video? Grazie!
Would have been helpful if explained which key the modes I were in . Personally got very confused.
they were mostly on the key of A
TheSabatuer
All we're key of a
Too confusing, where do I start?? Are your lessons in order in any way?
Adolfo Costa hey thanks for this reply. I’ve been struggling with this concept for awhile now. Searching video after video trying to figure it out. But what you wrote or how you wrote it here makes sense to me. Thank you so much.
