I don't know how I stumbled on this video, but I'm glad I did. The first car I ever had was one of these. Everything but the trunk rack and the color was the same. Glad to see these getting put back together, I miss mine to this day.
Found you via RCR. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Chrysler K-Car Turbo Coupés when paired with manual transmissions - LeBaron, Daytona, Sundance, et cetera. But my ultimate dream from that era is the Chrysler TC - basically a Le Baron Roadster (two-seater). There were a few dozen made with a 5-speed manual gearbox - something it’s competitor, the Cadillac Allante, never got. And those manual roadsters got a special Maserati designed 4-valve head.
I might eventually want one of those Maserati's as well! Would be cool to casually say "yeah I have a Maserati" and it is a unique piece of automotive history
@@triptheroad In my opinion, there hasn’t really been “true” Maseratis since probably the late 80’s or so. Nowadays, they’re just the exotic subsidiary of FIAT, which is part of Stellantis, and so they share FIAT-Chrysler platforms and components, and the engines are ultimately Chrysler-based V8’s. I own (technically my grandfather’s) a Maserati Khamsin, and sort of own another one in the form of my Citroën SM. The SM has a 3.0L Maserati V6. Both of those cars were designed when Maserati was owned by Citroën, so the Khamsin in turn has the same hydropneumatic suspension/steering/braking/clutching system as the SM.
My first car 88 LeBaron, hardtop, 2 door, digital dash, turbo, infinity sound ... but 3spd auto. Dad knew a guy at the body shop because he worked at Ross Park Dodge in Pittsburgh(now closed) and got it painted chili pepper red for me. That's crazy, this was Greensburg area Pennsylvania I grew up. I'd love to find one.
Sorry to comment a year later and also for my bad english. I am a 18 year old guy from finland and I bought a 89 lebaron gtc and i've done very much to get it on the road again. Shortly after purchase, I realized that the floor was completely rusted out and spent a year welding it. After the welds I took it for inspection... It in fact did not pass for various of reasons. The rear brakes started to lock up during the inspection, emissions were too high, rear wheel bearing was shot, the left lower control arm was wiggly and parking brake did nothing. Then I was broke so it stood a year in my bacyard. during the year a tree fell on it, destroying the rear glass, the left side mirror and left a few dents to the roof. fast forward like a month from that point, the engine bay caught fire since the fuel lines were weakened from the tree falling and started leaking on the hot engine. now I have replaced all the electronics and vacuum lines that were damaged by the fire and have done close to everything for the car to pass inspection. I still have to build a new exhaust system on it since the last owner straight piped it with no catalysator or mufflers. I hope you find this little struggle of mine with my lebaron even a little entertaining and I wish that you too will be able to enjoy your chrysler on the road as soon as possible. wishing you all the best.
What a score. I love these hard top coupes. had a grey/blue on silver one many years ago, with manual. I was a Daytona nut but that Lebaron... YUP. Good car. I live in rust country and dumped it when it started poppin.
I am a little nervous because this one is from the PA rust belt and I have found a few spots I should address sooner rather than later, but the last owner did take really good care of it even when he couldn't make time to get it back on the road
I miss my first car.1980 Lebaron. 318 with 727 transmission. It was my childhood car. I should have kept it. Im so disgusted with myself for not keeping it. We have people who call in and complain if there are “too many” vehicles in my yard, which is private property, but the never ending headache of complaints and trespassing cod enforcement officers takes its toll.
Just found this video/channel-while I've never owned a Chrysler Lebaron-or simlar 80s turbo mopar-my daily driver for about the past 7 years-yes-by choice-is an '88 Dodge Aries-the engine of which I rebuilt about 3 yrs ago-so I can appreciate your Lebaron story-updates? Update video?
Hopefully posting a couple videos early this year, and ramping up to a monthly video schedule before 2025. Lots to work on and film once I get the ball rolling again!
Hey Trip! Thanks for the content! I would love for you to continue this series and then maybe later pull out your old, first dodge shadow and talk about its quirks and problems! Thanks!
@@triptheroad id certainly watch it! But unfortunately I can't speak to the desires of others. Thanks again! Will be following your channel moving forward. Road to 2k let's goo!
In the future, if you get nickel/copper lines they are much easier to bend by hand and have the added benefit of not rusting. I use that stuff wherever I replace lines.
Correct, I just happened to have a whole roll of the correct size steel left over from the s10 build. I'll probably redo all of it in the future if I can get it up on a lift to rust proof.
DERE HE IS!!!!!!! I think it probably took around 5 years or more to find my hardtop lebaron coupe with the options I wanted (aka everything) we need to get mine and yours together sometime!
Is it very rare to have that type of car? Here in lithuania there is one car IDENTICAL as this one same colour same thing mechanical, 5speed, the seats are the same and only for €2k (im sure could go down to 1.5/1.6k)
I have found a car exactly exactly like yours, 2.2 mechanic turbo just the right side mirror is broken. And few things to repair like breaking pads, chasis needs to be repair, the headlight cover is stuck. I wish i was a mechanic to maybe repair the car and save money. I havent bought it yet but im starting to like these cars even tho i just found out about them 3 days ago hehe. This owner had it for 16 years. What else to look out while checking this beast? What if the voice system is not working, is that a sign to not buy the car?
I would join a few facebook groups to get some model specific advice on what to check for. The biggest thing is to make sure that it runs and moves, generally from there you can bring any car back. If it doesn't start at all, it's really hard to determine what's wrong with it. I am in the SDAC (Shelby Dodge Auto Club) group and a few Lebaron Groups. The SDAC guys know a lot about the turbo systems on these cars, they are just a wealth of information for the 80's and early 90's Chrysler stuff too. If the voice alert doesn't work, I'd still consider buying it as that could be something as simple as a bad component on the voice alert module
I'm such an idiot. I had one of these cars in my youth.... even collected (from the junkyard, when the junkyards were full of these cars) a very nice headliner and overhead console. I foolishly sold the car and the person who bought it, didn't want the overhead console so I through it all into the dumpster. I used to think these cars would be available for ever for next to nothing. Oh how wrong I was. I'd love to find another today. Would trade straight across for my Shelby Daytona. As much as I love my Daytona, it became one of those "Never meet your Hero" moments. After years of lusting after one and then having one literally fall into my lap..... I still prefer my Lebaron coupe. Would you be interested in an original 1987-style Infinity I cassette player? I still have like..... four of them.
I'm actually trying to find a few extra infinity radios, I bought a couple but I need to perform the repairs on them, and I also have bought three more Lebarons since making this episode 😂
Sadly you're right about the parts getting hard to find, and the junkyard isn't a bargain anymore. I reluctantly buy parts for these from the yard because it's one of the only options when a car very occasionally shows up in one, but I've stopped going for more common car parts. I bought a shipping container to stockpile as much stuff as possible related to these cars, I have a 27 gallon tote filled just with digital dash clusters, another with wiring harnesses, another with dash bezels, etc
Hello. I am from Sweden. I have just bought a 1990 Chrysler Le Baron. I have the same problem with the headlight motor as you have. I cant find the fixing kit on e Bay. Do you have a number or a good name to search for the artikle so i can find it on eBay? Thank you for the help. sincerely Ove

That was the Badass car everyone wanted in Mexico back in the 90s.They used call it Phantasm
The hardtops look so much nicer than the verts.
They handle a lot better too
I loved my hardtop 89 LeBaron! Auto, no turbo, but 4 wheel disk brakes. Great car.
Best interior for these cars.
Wow, and I thought KITT was the only one who could talk...🤯
back in the day, the LeBaron was a nice ride....not bad for a souped up K car
It rides nice too, it needs new shocks and CV joints which will probably be addressed in a future video
Happy to see you back on your projects and congrats on the new ride

It's awesome to see you restore this car. I have an 85 mark cross convertable and a 87 New Yorker turbo that sits in my garage. My BMW sits outside.

My cousin had one the same color. It was sharp when it came out.
Congratulations. There is shockingly so much junk out there. What I wouldn’t give for a coupe or convertible turbo 5-speed…

When you say cuts power ,I had a vacuum line break on my daytona. It would run fine then all of a sudden, cut out. Just FYI (hard plastic lines)
This was actually the fix, I need to finish part 2, been getting ready to move to our next house so I've been slow to edit content

For sure! Probably too late to get some fall foliage shots but definitely once I get the car detailed some more
Hey, I have a 90 convertible like the one in your video. Can you make an update video on how it's doing?
