  • The Man with a 30 Second Memory!
Ein Mann mit einem 30 Sekunden Gedächtnis.
A small docuclip of a man with the "most severe case of amnesia." With only a memory of his wife and his musical abilities, he essentially has no place in time.

After 9 or so years, his mind calmed down almost as if having adjusted to the new reality.
Instead of constantly freaking out like he used to do, he developed a skill for maintaining a constant state of taking his present environment and surroundings for granted, and simply 'going with the flow'.
Watch the full documentary, it's very, very fascinating

***** Honestly, I know what you mean. But even if you love your mom and dad in a really intense way, they annoy you when they keep asking "how to turn on the internet" or when they want to talk with you in times when you'd rather be alone.
Of course if you love someone you try to support them as much as you can in hard times.
But at some point, you probably feel like it's enough; like you deserve better than that
Maybe I'm totally wrong, I don't have a relative with this kind of problem, or any problem close to that -, and I've never been in love with someone- so yeah, my opinion may be wrong

The sad true lies in the first minute of the clip, he has no memories of the past and *no expectations of the future*. It's not that he "doesn't remember how to freak out", that's a basic natural reaction and not memory based. He just doesn't know what to expect.

my grandfather constantly thought he had just returned from a trip and was terribly jetlagged.
If anyone brought too much attention to his inability to remember, it was confusing and upsetting. Powerlessness can be an extremely scary thing, and many older people struggle to come to terms with it, in a way he was free from that.
We learned to just try keep up a charade that felt natural and comfortable for him and focus on *now* - does that taste nice? what do you think about this painting? lets listen to some music.
Interestingly he was able to recall long term memories of his childhood and younger years, the sorts of things we hadn't really heard about much before.

I suppose there is ups and downs to this. Depression like not having seen your wife for many years while she is away, and the joy like seeing her for the first time in many years everytime she come through the door. If life could be described as a rollercoaster, then his life would be like a steap hill waterslide. There are boring steps to get on top, then a funny ride down the slide, rinse and repeat. While the rollercoaster has many exciting turns, ups and downs different angles.

To clear some confusion for commentors: He never lost his memory. He got ill and the fever destroyed his hippocampus. What he lost was the ability to create new memories. Muscle memory is stored seperately in the brain, which is why he can remember to play and walk. He still has his memories from his 20s, before he got sick, and his hippocampus was damaged. That's why he recognizes coffee, words, the concept of chicken and his wife... things he already had learned about, but not his current residence or grown children. And it's very real.

hey genius, the hippocampus is part of the brain, specifically the medial temporal lobe. muscle memory is largely stored in a part of the brain called the cerebellum. different types of memory is stored in different parts of the brain.
imagine trying to clear confusion up for people but being wrong about what you're saying.

@@0aux hey, Einstein, did you watch the video? he knows how to talk, eat, he can identify objects and people, he knows his wife, his kids. he can play the piano. he remembers something is wrong with him because he randomly starts talking about doctors. these are all stored as different types of memory. so he has memories, genius. he just has anterograde amnesia. you, mr. genius, are closer to having no memory than this guy. have you checked your brain recently, genius?

This is sad, but the look of pure joy on his face every time he sees his wife, as if she'd been gone for years, that's so bitter sweet, bless both their hearts.

I remember reading a non-fiction book about similar memory issues , and despite all the struggles it causes, there is one good bit! Due to the incredibly short nature of people like clive's memory, their friends/children/partners etc. can give them a piece of amazing news that may make they incredibly happy, but they can then be told this news repeatedly throughout the day , and everytime they are told, it will feel like the first time , so they experience the joy and happiness of learning that information over and over again.

I find it almost serene. Just as he says, it's like death: The sadness of those around him may be clear, but he's none the wiser. At least he's different from the rest of you. I honestly envy him somewhat. If I could just experience it for a day... though, I may be lost in it forever and know no better. Utterly fascinating.

His excited reaction to seeing his wife every day is so wholesome and made me cry though. Love and music are the strongest forces in the brain and tend to surpass memory issues like with dementia and alzheimers.

after a head injury in a near fatal car wreck my dad now has dementia and though the short term memory loss isn't as severe as this man, this still reminded me a lot of my dad.

A fate far worse than a physical death. A total death of the ego, its experiences, and its personality. He's been destroyed as a human being at the most base level. Like a bulb, flickering off and on again. With only his procedural memory, he can remember how to play the piano. He's barely more than a simple, albeit confused, machine.
