      True story here, as a kid I was absolutely terrified of being kidnapped. Not so much for me being hurt, but that I'd be *ransomed*, and cost my parents a lot of money. I have no idea specifically why this was so on my mind, but it was the 80s, I'd probably seen an overdramatic PSA on TV, or some bad soap opera. At any rate, from a young age I also carried a knife everywhere, just in case. My grandfather was an amateur knife maker so he gifted me a couple, because he knew I was such an enthusiast.

      To this day I carry a tiny 3cm folding knife on my keys. Infinitely useful for cutting loose threads, opening mail and packages (and really easy to sharpen as there isn't much there). but in the back of my mind there is always the thought that if i'm kidnapped or something, I have a blade to possibly cut through bindings with. or if lost in the woods suddenly, I can make cordage for tourniquets/shelter or process a fish or something.

    In a way, the concept reminds me of Japanese martial arts (I mention those because that's what I know) that study the use of the folding fan for self-defense. The idea was to be able to defend oneself in a context where it was not possibile to carry weapons, due to formality or necessity.

    • @butwhataboutdragons7768
      @butwhataboutdragons7768 Год назад +11

      I've no doubt that in a lot of societies throughout history, common people have carried knives for self-defense, just not "officially" for that purpose. At least of some size. Even in the most disarmed places possible, you can't stop people from carrying a knife they'll need for eating, or for work, or something. If nothing else, even long knives are very easy to conceal. Certainly there would then also be informal, maybe even self-taught, methods of self-defense, that would not have been recorded.

But the real meat of this video (heh) I think reminds me of a set of secret weapons you can get in the game Skyrim. While utensils are everywhere in the game, most are just designated as junk items and thus unequitable... except for a couple of select sets found here and there. On those, they *are* listed as weapons in the game and thus letting you use them as makeshift weapons. Sure, they're terrible in the role, doing barely any damage and are as bad as the shiv you can get, basically just a pointy stick barely as long as the a regular dining knife, but they are weapons in the game and a set you can use if you so chose to.

    Shad, I think it would be an interesting video if you were to go down the common weapons listed in the equipment section of 5th edition D&D Players Handbook and develop some special rules for each one to give them some individual flavor.
    This would go beyond the limited number of weapon characteristics that exist (reach, versatile, two-handed, etc.), and give each weapon something that would make it more than just a damage dice value; but would still be a simple rule to give the user something a bit different. BUT, it would be on the player to know the specific abilities and remember to use them.

    • @AnotherDuck
      @AnotherDuck Год назад

      I think the main problem with that is that 5E is designed to be simple, so a lot of those differences are abstracted away, and as such only appear as narrative flavour. You have basically the same hit chance regardless of weapon (but there are a lot of character modifiers), and the vast majority of melee weapons have the exact same reach. After that, the hit dice is really the distinction, and even then it's often not a huge difference anyway.
      When it comes to adding stuff to weapons, I think it's also important to not step on racial and class abilities, feats, and other things that would get obsolete if you can accomplish the same thing just by picking a specific weapon.
      But overall, I think details like this is a great topic with your DM during session 0. Having a video about it with suggestions wouldn't be a bad idea.

    The 2 prong fork, if the sword is glansing off something metal (say armour) You might be able to angle the fork in a way the sword slides into the fork gap on it's own, though you'd have to be well practised and very very fast. It would be a freak occurrence but it would expose their sword arm to direct attack if you got away with it, maybe even disarm them, which then that sword could be yours or a follow up attack (or a follow up to force a withdrawal so you can seize the sword).

    Shad go watch some of the Slingshotchannels videos on arrow penetration. I don't think that the penetration of your knife is anywhere near the penetration of an arrow. (depending on distance and circomstances of course). Yoerg often shoots arrows through a coconut in ballistic gel while your knife's penetration is limited to the length of its blade.

    Shad, throughout your sword videos you go on a lot about reach. I think I remember in one of your videos you talked about the disadvantage of reach for a sword, and this may be one of those situations.
    If you have a short knife, you have no reach, but if you get close enough to easily stab your opponent with that knife, you are now so close that the reach of a sword is practically useless. Of course the sword wielder still has the guard and pummel to attack with, but you have a knife that is in very dangerous proximity of your opponent's body.
    Also, I think hitting the lung might not be the best option, especially on a monster. It could eventually kill the creature, but that would take several minutes to happen. Maybe stab in as many places as possible!

    • @kikixchannel
      @kikixchannel Год назад

      That depends on the scale of the injury. If it's only one lung, it wouldn't really be that deadly, at least, not unless the wound would be quite large. If it's both lungs though, and to a degree that the lungs stop functioning properly, the effect can be almost instant as the huge glutton for oxygen that is the brain would quickly start shutting down functions from lack of it. It doesn't matter that it would take several minutes for a beast to die if it couldn't properly see or maintain balance after a few dozens of seconds, or maybe even lose consciousness.
      Furthermore, any decrease in oxygen intake will noticeably slow down and weaken a creature as oxygen is necessary for production of energy. If you're low on energy, you're not going to be able to use your full strength and speed. As such, puncturing a lung will always increase your chances against a creature that attacks you in a short time, even without taking into consideration whether it is lethal or not (it doesn't need to be, by the way).

      @@kikixchannel watch some hunting videos

    • @kikixchannel
      @kikixchannel Год назад

      @@josephnebeker7976 There's no need. It all boils down literally to whether or not you manage to affect the lungs job at getting the oxygen into the blood stream. This may or may not work depending on a number of factors that may seem totally random, buf if you are fighting a large beast with a knife that cannot get you a quick kill, 'gambling' on this is much better than trying to kill by a thousand cuts.
      It is a biological fact that lowering the oxygen in the blood stream is going to lower the faculties and strength of the individual, all the way up to loss of consciousness. It is also a biological fact that lungs purpose is doing that, and that heavy activity (like fighting) demands higher oxygen intake, meaning that the lungs are under greater stress and more subject to any failure.
      What is also a fact, however, is that if you just pierce the lung with an arrow or a bullet, it may not actually cause said lung to stop functioning (nor lessen its ability to function, not considerably), so your argument to watch 'hunting videos' is quite pointless on that note alone. A small circular hole after a bullet, or a hole that is plugged by an arrow, is a vastly different thing than a long cut that was probably torn while the knife was inside and was pulled. Hence why the effect on the speed of the process is different.
      This IS why I talked about both lungs AND that they need to stop functioning properly. It is NOT a granted if they are pierced. Countless people were saved with no lasting effects exactly because a lot of damage to lungs does not need to have severe effect and can be saved from with proper treatment (and there's enough time to actually do it). What these have in common though was that most of them were not caused by somebody using their full strength with the intention of screwing your lung up as much as they could.

    I write books, shows, etc. and design games in my spare time, with hopes for sustaining myself on it in the future.
    In one of the games I've been designing, there's this boss which is a giant, and he has a massive health pool. He has a mechanic where, from when he first takes damage and about 30 seconds (could be changed later) into the fight from that point, if you haven't been able to kill him yet, he winds back time on himself, to where he stood, his condition, etc. from just before he started taking damage (slightly akin to Ekko's ultimate in League of Legends).
    This means you either have to do a lot of damage fast, either by setting up a lot of traps, delayed spells, etc., deal massive damage through stats and hitting him in critical areas, or... you can throw weapons in the area he will respawn, timing it to when he "re-spawns", such that he spawns with the weapons/items inside him, for massive damage (possibly killing him in one blow by getting something big in his brains).
    I would be happy to take Shad's or anyone's critique on this.

    One thing a lot of people tend not to consider is that an adventurer isn't going to be marching 24/7. Assuming you are travelling, you'd likely spend 8-10 hours or so actually travelling at best, then set up camp and then... What is your adventurer doing once camp is set up and food is good and maybe they are on watch? One common thing mentioned in various series is whittling. You in a forest? Grab some wood while searching for kindling and whatnot for that fire, then start whittling away. Which means you likely need a knife to do so. That knife might have other uses as well. But regardless, I think it is important to come up with something for your adventurer to want to do in their downtime. Read books, whittle, do some tailoring/sewing/embroidering, etc. And think about what sort of extra gear they'd need to do so. And what uses you could have for that gear.
    A weird hobby I once gave a druid I made was pulling stuff. Carts, wagons, whatever. She loved to pull stuff along the road. Her animal companion also loved to pull stuff, and the 2 would sort of fight over who got to pull the cart/wagon. This led to a bunch of campaign changes from the DM in how he approached stuff, and changes in my gear prioritization. The DM changed to making stuff like foraging or getting supplies more important, because we had way higher carrying capacity because wagon, but also it led to us thinking about how we'd deal with the wagon when going somewhere we couldn't bring it like into dungeons. The wagon even had a little shrine for my druid on it, and I would put effort doing things to make pulling the wagon easier or making it look fancier. I had to consider how to actually pull it since I was an aasimar and my animal companion was a chocobo-like creature, and the 2 of us would not be using the same methods to pull (you'd need a harness for the bird, while I would need something to push or pull like a wooden bar in front). Was fun, thinking about how to integrate that wagon into stuff. How to get it to locations, what to do in dungeons, etc. Let us get way more aggressive in looting since we could just strip all the bandits naked and sell all their gear and stuff (dm ended up ruling we got like, 1/10th normal sell price for such gear just to keep us from getting disgustingly rich immediately, and he actually had to be careful giving enemies even masterwork gear).

    If you had to fight some one who had a sword with a knife there are two schools of thought:
    A) Try to enter a grapple (preferably by flanking them while they are engaged with some one else). In a grapple the swords length becomes a liability, and the knife's shortness an asset.
    B) Run; He's got a sword!
    Either way NEVER try to "fence" them with your knife. If there is no safe way to enter a grapple, end the fight some other way. Now on to spoons, there is an additional spoon material you neglected to mention, cow horn. Townsends youtube channel has a whole video on it but if your last name is Horner, your forefathers made spoons and combs.

    I personally explain damage as placement of the hit. Take 5e, for instance. A rogue's sneak attack doing massive damage is indicative not of their weapon hitting harder, but of them being able to land more precise hits thanks to moments of opportunity (Lungs, armpit etc). So while a dagger can be as lethal as a sword, it's ability to land that lethal blow in combat lands it a lesser damage dice.
    However, I utilise Coup de grace for my games; if a player finds themselves in a position where their target is truly helpless (E.g., subject to a magical binding like hold person) and there are no other threats present? They could outright kill their target with anything that makes sense.
    For instance, you've got some gang member tied to a chair for interrogation. When you're done, you could- as evil as it would be- simply take that little knife and open their throat up. They can't stop you. However, in combat that same knife wouldn't have nearly the same opportunity to kill.

    You could use your trusty sling to hurl said eating implements at creatures from range when rocks and sling stones are at a premium. (no adventurer should leave home without the much youtube hated and maligned sling).

    Very happy to see this video and an inteesting thought occured to me as you were decribing how each weapon could be used.
    The better your martial arts skill the more likely you would be able to do something with those utensils that could be deadly or at least give you an upper hand against humoinods for sure but potentially anything you know the anotmany for.
    I know at least a lot of modern based nitjsu has simular things they do where as they are grappling you there is a ninja star in the hand to be able to cut you or maybe drop you onto ot as part of the move a good location like a core muscle or tendon would cause someone a lot of trouble in the future fight and some preadtors even hunt that way with classics like a hamstring attack the the prey cant tun and is not as mobile.
    So i can see a lot of potential in the knife for sure, the most common of them.
    The spoon surpisngly there are some good bits an often ungaurded section of most armour is the throat if during a grapple or pass though manuver you could take a solid jab at someones throat well that would cause some damage.
    And if the hands are not protected during a wrist based grapple rap the hands with a spoon and you have the chance the person will have to drop the weapon.
    The fork one more prong or spork like could do a lot of damage but there is a lot of risk to it.
    But all of these ideas are best used with martial arts manuaevers over basic sword play manuvers they would have some cross over but the advantage would be to the martial arts weilder i belivie.
    But there is defiantly more potential use out of them than i would have given it credit for.

      Really depends on how in depth and granular the systems in the game are.
      The simplest and fastest way that I've seen is in Dark Souls, where daggers have a unique animation when used as a weapon during backstabs and ripostes. Usually doing equal or more damage than the strongest weapon your character can wield.
      The most accurate but still video gamey method would be making daggers a weapon type and skill that you can level up. Having a high Dagger skill will make the gamplay and combat of daggers much more practical viable by using that weapon type's strengths. Get into a grapple and pull out the dagger and stab your opponent killing them in seconds. Compared to having a low Dagger skill where the only thing you can do is swing it around and stab with it like you would a sword and deal laughably little damage.
      The most realistic is in VR like Blade & Sorcery.
