'Xpander' is taken from ‘Sasha : re-Fracted: Live at the Barbican’ limited edition Blu-Ray (1000 signed copies)
The limited-edition signed Blu-Ray enables fans who missed the two record-sell-out shows in May to catch up with the lucky ones who witnessed Sasha’s towering presence dominating centre stage at his live performance debut.
Sasha’s focus on the future and fresh worlds to conquer made it unlikely he’d revisit his seminal cut, which electrified dancefloors in 1999 and has been spoken of with awe ever since. So he began a seemingly new piece on stage, which then revealed itself to be a special new rework, bringing the stunned audience to their feet in a goosebump-inducing joyful finale.
"From day one everyone was like “We’ve got to do Xpander!"” Sasha says. "Of course, it was the scariest thing to tackle because it was such a big old record. We slowed it right down, put this really teasing intro in it that sounded very [Steve] Reich-ian. The moment that it opened up and the riff came in was a really special moment at the Barbican."
The rework rounded off Sasha’s live interpretation of his highly-acclaimed Scene Delete album on the eminent Late Night Tales label along with tracks from his back catalogue, on keyboards and accompanied by vocalists, band and string ensemble.
The Blu-Ray package includes the full show (plus interviews with several of the musicians and singers, including Charlie May and Dave Gardner), along with two audio CDs for both halves of the show and a high-quality audio download. Each booklet is individually numbered and personally signed by Sasha.
"It was a mountain to climb. The last few days of rehearsals, it just got tighter and tighter. It went from this frantic atmosphere a month before the show, everyone panicking, to suddenly everyone going, “Oh this is working, it’s going to be great!” It achieved everything and more by doing it the way we did. In terms of a personal achievement, the fact that I’ve learned to play again is such an important part of this for me. The way we worked together, the way we interacted with each other, just buzzing off each other and playing as a band, I’ve never had that before." SASHA SEPTEMBER 2017

Like many, I have a relationship with this track that goes way way back. All throughout my life I have listened to this in various stages of growing up, the highs and the lows. When the synth finally hits, it's like a kaleidoscope of memories and emotions from all those times long gone - that rush is unbelievably emotional. Sasha, you're a legend - my life wouldn't be what it is today without your input in electronic music.
Thank you for describing what i thought i was the only one...
Im am 100 with you on this
you i adore you friend and i have been on exactly this same journey... thank u for saying it better than anyone ever could 😘
Any of y’all know the chords for this track?
It sounds like a cliche, but it isn't, I was there the first night he ever played Xpander in a club, one of his favourite clubs by the way, source?, Sasha, I asked him and he confirmed it, it wasn't the finished version, but even then it was ethereal, was February 1999, about 5 months before it released.
Fucking hell, the goose bumps I got when the huge synth came in nearly broke me in half. Expander is truly an emotional roller coaster for me, even still, after all this time. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Who else has listened to this over 6 times?
Dustin's Fish Tanks more like 60 times
Dustin's Fish Tanks
I must be on viewing 25 now 😎
mrBSho haha- I'm over 12
I've listened to it probably more than a hundred times... No bullshit... Fucking amazing...
I've got it on audio as well... Downloaded it and converted into audio... I've got all of them.. I was there... Front row, to the of the stage...
This track will go down into history books.
First time I ever went to a club, I knew nothing about dance music, me and my mates went to Cream and Sasha was doing a 4 hour set.
Changed how I saw music.
He’s still by far the best DJ I’ve ever seen.
They call him the man like and that’s because he is.
Already has
definitely will !!
My Wife's Sister reminded me of this tune by Sasha an absolute belter 👌
History books only wankers will read
Still one of the most extraordinary things I have seen in live music. I cannot describe how incredible this sounded in the Barbican Hall.
Just seen it now first time, i get where your coming from... gota admit sasha has created a monster tune here 👍
Agreed as i was there also an amazing night :)
I would imagine it was absolutely thunderous live.
Still brings tears to my eyes thinking about this show. Unreal I was even there.
Sasha is different from all the other DJ's. His sets have always the " voyage voyage " vibe 🔥🔥🔥
5:28 - When you're a classically trained cellist and you realize you've stumbled onto the musical equivalent of Alice's rabbit hole.
I love this comment.
Yeah
adore uuuu
LURVE this comment-I’m classically trained also!!!
This version of this song can only be described as eargasm…
one of the most important tracks ever written
Amen to that, my friend!
Xpander
Mixed By - Neil McLellan
Producer - Charlie May
Written-By - C.May*, D.Forbes*
@@MassaPositiva It's no secret that Spooky did all the work.
The greatest piece of music ever made.
sbandoboy yeah honestly never know why everyone gives sasha credit for it.
classic never dies
I believe most people here will agree that Sasha is one of the most (if not the only one) influential person on electronic scene. Sasha and John Digweed is unbeatable duet, they set a new benchmark (and they always were) in the electronic music - starting from Renaissance: The Mix Collection defined the way of real electronic music perception, music taste of the generation and showed people how beautiful music can be.
The Legend, the One and Only - Sasha.
Alexey Kozlov Yea, but not a patch on the likes of Aphex twin and Squarepusher, those two are modern day musical geniuses. Sasha & Diggers I do love though as DJ's.
Alexey Kozlov The God Alexander
Nope, just 2 out of many but certainly have/had an ear for music.
Sasha is the only influential person on the electronic music scene? What are you like 12 years old and you read that shit online somewhere? You have no fucking idea. Don't presume to speak for "most people here" when you spout such utter nonsense. Dick-sucking blind worship like that is incredibly pathetic, and betrays your lack of knowledge regarding serious electronic music since Sasha was in nappies. The last line alone is enough to make me want to vomit.
John Arundell looks like you perfectly described yourself, try harder - I believe you can vomit in comments better. Cheers!
smiles, tears, goosebumps, smiles, goosebumps, tears, euphoria extreme...this is the full stop in the grammar of music - the perfect, the absolute, the complete, the period .!
2024 and still fresh as day 1
I'm serious about this. I *CANNOT* find the words to express how I'm feeling right now. This is just......................just.........
Happy birthday xpander!!🎁🎁🎉🎉20 years old!!
Jesus Christ what a rework. God bless this man
If you have a friend who insists Tiesto pioneered Trance music, please direct them to this video, thanks.
psykofuk mix 2
or cut friendship...
@Graham, King of the Britons! Agreed KLF Pure Trance 88 mix.. saw them live at Land of Oz summer 89.. ooh ooww
@@dantegomez7432 hahahaha
Sasha invented Progressive House, not trance.
i want this played at my funeral...
ha ha ha
Is it soon ed ? If not your have to remind us closer to the time
You could turn it on, set to loop, then pull the plug
LOL....Brilliant...
Me too!
Incredible. Every person on the stage deserves to be credited, not just Sasha.
Sasha didn't even produce Xpander, it was Charlie May.
@@Albert_O_Balsam No it was Sasha, Charlie May and Duncan Forbes. See the sleve notes of the Xpander EP.
This was such a fantastic night, a real privilege to have been there.
Blessed you are
it must of been amazing ! I'm watching it at home that's goosebumps !!!!
I didn't see you
Martyn Weigh same here and
Listening in 2021, still get goosebumps! All hail Sasha #legend
can confirm still happens in 2024
I can't even explain feeling when listening to this. Absolutely magic.
Yeah
Totally agree
The original was my “gateway” track into trance/progressive music still giving me spine tingles to this day. Still got E.P on vinyl too!
Same man! 🙌🏼
Damn Xpander is first trance track I heard 20+ years ago. I still have the CD single of it. Sasha is amazing still to this day.
I cant even start to explain how much i love this guy.
I know the feeling man. /\---- Sasha ----/\
Neither can I. Changed my life. Met him at fabric and couldn’t string words together
@@optimusprime95 lucky you meeting the legend 🙂
this has to be sent to space
Goosebumping over here, blood rushing everywhere :O
Spot on there m8,wow!
Amazing isn’t it 🎶👌
Have you slashed your wrists in a freezer
To have Charlie May there just makes it extra special. Not many songs put the hairs standing. So beautiful.
This must've been a rare treat for those in attendance of a certain age who have swapped raving for spending their weekends at a garden centre or some shit. As much as still enjoy following Sasha there's no way I'd go out my way to see him in a club environment now. I'd Just feel so out of place at my ripe old age of 38. But God damn I'd love to have been at this.
I saw S&D back in ‘18 at the ripe old age of 46. Sasha was okay back in the early nineties, never saw him again til a crap set at sankeys soap, around ‘00 - never blown away by him tbh, but that’s cause proper techno and solid house always walks all over prog house I guess..
WOW not gonna lie It took a few minutes to take it all in but around 5 and change I felt like I was 20 again running all over NYC having fun..... saw Sasha in NYC in 2004 right before we got married, Great memories Great Music
ONE OF THE GREATEST THINGS IVE EVER SEEN !
I've listened to this everyday for the past 3 years and I'm blown away every time. masterpiece.
So so lucky to have been there and to be able to see it all over again makes it even more special. The boy done good
Go on Sasha!!!!
i keep coming back to comment this is that good.
Probably one of the best things I have ever seen and heard. How much I wish I could be there... What a tribute to a masterpiece of art that Sasha produced.
You have to have the balls to try and rework such a timeless masterpiece that made your name as an iconic legendary DJ and producer and make a hell better banger
I'm sure it sounded better in ya head
@@busybee6889 yes
A very special version of a very special true progressive track. Sasha is an enormously talented man... Don't forget Charlie May too!
Yes! Charlie May is an exquisite musician!
Sasha just a good DJ
So many emotions.
Yeah
I was searching for Danny Tanaglia and had to stop by here, this is so groovy. Relaxed, fell asleep to this and ended up in my living room dancing the this. I want it looped for 8 hours. Pandemic can't hold me down with grooves like these - So refreshing!
Thanks to Charlie May. Sasha. Dave Gardner. Barry Jamieson. The true team ever. Thank you guys. Respect
This is a masterpiece. I'm genuinely impressed.
You had never heard the track before?
Absolute legend, Sasha has been top of the game since 1988 and he's still rocking crowds nowadays, but this is a higher level of preformance than DJing, huge respect! I was close to buy tickets for this but couldnt because of my honeymoon, I'm kicking myself I couldnt make it :(
I was living in London and had friends from Nottingham down to visit that weekend. We chose a Thames boat party then Ministry afterwards. Had an amazing time with Ministry being better than all the clubs I visited during the 2 months I spent in Ibiza last year. Had I known this was LIVE HOWEVER.....
Should've made it PART of the honeymoon mate ? My fiance and I are getting married in Feb 2019, doing the reception on the river and then going to see Orbital that night - can't wait !!!
jesus christ. my god. this is insanely euphoric.
Can you realise the privilege it is to really appreciate the original music and this one ? Make me high just listening both 🤩🤩 #eargasm 🤤
when you think it can't get any better... comes this version
that riff will always melt me. I played the original at joof editions a few weeks ago
Nothing better than capturing the entire sound by watching it all being performed live with an array of instruments and talent.
What an amazing spectacle
I remember I went to see Sasha at the Arches in Glasgow back in the day when he had just made Xpander. When I heard him bring it into the mix I went around telling randoms that they needed to listen to this tune, as if they weren't going to anyway. When I could see how much they were all into it I stood there grinning like a Cheshire cat, somewhat proudly as though I had some part to play in it all.
Nice story, brings back some of my own memories :)
Miss the arches ;(
Sean Simpson Lmao.. Legit material back in the day right 👉
Classic I’m sure we’ve all done that move back in the ecstasy days , I was lucky enough to be a regular at Shelly’s when Sasha was a kid like myself and then when he went to renaissance I was one of the “geezas” in notts and derby’s so I was there all the way with him and digweed and I’ve always known how lucky I was 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Within the first minute chills up and down my spine
What i love most about seeing this video is how much he looks like just a regular dude. Dad-bod, balding, and he just kills it! No gimmicky outfit, just him and his music. A compete legend
“And make no apologies for linking your thinking to computer technologies!” Faithless...
Anyone getting tingles? Absolute perfection 👌
Hearing this through expensive headphones brings a shiver to ones spine!!!
2019 and they still can't come close to a man like Sasha
The man. Was some night ❤️
I see this track as Sasha's sonic evolution. He kept the heart of the track the same whilst elevating it to completely different dimension, a calmer one, a more refined one. Creating off branches in between to connect them all at the end. Look at all these people at 8:20, they're dancing in a concert hall to an orchestra just like in the 90's Manchester sweaty warehouses where Sasha started off. Certainly a pinnacle for Sasha's school of sound.
A man like Sasha.....THE dance music master........legend!
He is remarkable since, he is making producing creating magical music, but this is another level. Reaches out to the stars. Listening to the masters work since '96 ;)
Holy shit. I havent felt goosebumps like this. Outstanding. One of the best things i have heard.
7:10 - 'At my signal unleash hell'........ goose bumps.. watched it over 40 times.. what a masterpiece
4 mins 37 or so when that incredible Xpander riff comes in. . . 😍😍😍
This is where the goosebumps start to rise . Fuckin masterpiece !
- mythique Sasha Xpander - 90s song love
unreal live version of an absolute monster anthem.
i love that it's a little slowed down too, feels housey esp as it finishes up. deeeeep
My God. What I wouldn't have paid to have been there. Wow.
Utter genius. This has to star in a film soundtrack. Always been my favourite DJ going back to renaissance days. 😊
Awesome track. Heard it while driving on BBC radio one
Monumental piece, takes me right back to the year 2000 tearing up the tracks in Wipeout 3 in my zero-gravity ships on Playstation. Hits me right in the feels
Absolutely amazing.
One of true music pioneers. Phenomenal tune !
The son of god. The man like. The greatest Dj in the world. The greatest Dj of all time.
And he’s from North Wales like me so hop on
One of the first artists I heard that pulled me into this wonderful world and the first song I heard by him. This is absolutely, undeniably, a masterpiece! Much love
Mine too!
This 1999 track became one of the best live performances of 2017, absolutely amazing
Sublime. Amazing collaboration.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
X-pander is the best, the sound we hear will crush the rest..

Fantastic! Seeing Sasha perform live is pretty high up there on my bucket list!
The switch at 7:13 ist just pure bliss.
class as always from Sasha....goosebumps
Wow, what a performance - CLASSIC!!!
a true masterpiece
Had the honour of watching this in Manchester, believe me people, no better DJ has ever walked this planet. Now he's playing and planning more live music... Check out his baille fabric99 remix.... Genius.... Bit of a sub note, but gonna say anyway, lot of iconic NY djs leaving Gods great earth, rip, but this man should be mentioned in the same breath as all the greats... Always pushed somewhere different.. Mixing skills, whether it be on Technics, Ableton, or Cdjs... Fuckin phenomenal 😎
Stunning!!!!
So exiting and refreshing to see a Orchestra to be used in that way
What a group, what an undertaking, what a performance, what a wall of sound. I salute Sasha always and everyone involved. Much love
OMG!!!! goosebumps..!!!!!!!
A special night & this was most definitely the highlight.
