Thailand is the Brazil of sepak takraw, and Malaysia is the Argentina. Both Teams always find themselves in the Finals but other countries from the region and also from the east such as Japan and Korea are also getting better on the sport. Growing up as a Malaysian, the sports are embed into our live. We even love our Malaysian STL (Sepak Takraw League) which is probably the best league for the sport at the moment. It was also believed to existed long since 7th century in the region, and later modernize when Malaysia and Thailand agrees to call it Sepak(Malay) Takraw(Thai) to modernize it and now it has its place in Asian Games.

Well sepak takraw does go way back in the history... indonesia, thailand, malaysia, singapore and lot more used to be like one country, so it's not weird for we to have a lot of similarities, but somehow one of these country claiming almost everything is originated from their newfound country after the 2nd war... a lot of fight broke out to determine which is their right and originate from them but actual reality is it's all in the past and we can't justify which island does it belong too, we could just call say it originate from nusantara and all can be happy but no, not for the shallow minded people...

For international competitions, they use the same flooring material as with badminton. Thus, they cover the floor with Taraflex or Gerflor, which is a plastic mat. It is the event that makes the Southeast Asian Games truly Southeast Asian. They have at least three disciplines now. The most famous is regu, which is 3 v 3 on court. They also have doubles, which tends to be played more in the Philippines. Then, they also have circle takraw where a team of players tries to keep the ball in the air until the can shoot the ball through hoops suspended from the rafters.

Dude, in the olden days, it is customary for the Malays to introduce children as young as 3 year old in Silat (a local martial art) training. At that age, we don't teach them combat, but introduced certain moves and "warm-up" routines (so to speak) to train the flexibility and agility into them. Plus the village lifestyle of the olden days, kids climb trees, jump off trees, swim, run, do all sort of things that would train their tendons and small muscles. Like, calistenics without calistenics, yoga without yoga.
We sit on the floor, eat on the floor, work on the floor, and that too requires flexibility.

The ball is made out of Rotan, which is a type of leafy plant that grows commonly in southeast asia, the ball is also hollow so its quite light, however if the ball breaks, it can make sharp edges that will cause cuts and bleeding.
Traditionally its made with rotan but i believe modern balls are made with plastics.
