The truth is that the grasp or not of the bell constitutes a basic differ between O goshi, Uki goshi and Tsuri goshi (based on Kodokan) and personally, I agree with the argument. However, i think that the most important point to notice is the use of the hips ( Uki goshi-> rotary motion, Tsuri/O goshi-> vertical orbit, lifting) and that is exactly what Sensei Siopis wants to show us. Also, we should clarify the kind of judo we want to practice on. In traditional Judo we may not grasp the belt, but what about racing judo? Each sensei modify their own style (without, of course, altering the basic structure of the techniques°otherwise, we talk about a completely different martial art) Always happy to discuss the details with other athletes! :)
I do not understand your distinction between traditional and competitive judo. Each technique has its own name (for a good reason) given by the founder himself and each one is executed in a specific way. Whether it's traditional or competitive doesn't change a thing. The element of distinction between Ogoshi and Tsuri goshi is grabbing or not the belt of uke.
