I'll never forget the scene at JFK of a mother who had learned her child's flight had gone down with no survivors. She collapsed to the floor screaming "My baby!" over and over. It still haunts me all these years later.
Yes. I remember that scene too. I was staying at ymca in new york & remember the breaking news on the television. A horrible evening.
According to an interview that I read, Mrs. Jeannine Boulanger, mother of Nicole Boulanger who was on that plane, doesn't remember that moment.
😢😢😢😢
Actor David White aka Larry Tate on Bewitched TV show lost his son Jonathan White 33 in this crash.
It's interesting who had tickets for this flight and would have perished if not for random last minute changes.... Mats Wilander, who was one of the 3 best men's tennis players at the time, changed his ticket the day before. Kim Cattrell (Sex In The City) missed the flight due to a late night of shopping. Johnny Rotten also was delayed and missed the flight. The entire band The Four Tops changed their flight at the last minute. Wild!!!
Wicked good facts bud.
I was 6 years old at the time but since it was right before Christmas I'll never forget this awful tragedy. Adding to the somber nature of the event is the fact that I had an older cousin who went to Syracuse University, an institution that was profoundly affected. She didn't want to talk about the crash during the family gathering Christmas night or think about returning to campus after Christmas Break. Very surreal memory nearly 36 years later....
Sure miss Peter Jennings 😢!!! When network news still had credibility.
I read a rumor online that the late Christine Cavanaugh was supposed to be on the flight, but missed it because she was at a gas station talking extensively to a friend of hers on a pay phone. I don’t know if that story is true or not, but the fact that she’s been gone for almost ten years, and that Pan AM has been gone for more than three decades make it extra hard to know what really transpired.
35 years ago today.
Some say this attack contributed to Pan Am's demise as many people blamed Pan Am for this tragedy and thus reduced the earnings for the airline as a number travelers, and potential investors who could have helped restructure and rescue from bankruptcy avoided it. Wonder if this had not happened, or some other airline had the misfortune Pan Am would have survived for longer or still be around. So sad it was nearly before Christmas, I saw in the news that the guy who made the bomb was finnally under US custody.
It was already on a downward spiral, but it was the nail in the coffin for pan am
I think they failed to implement procedures that didn't let luggage on the plane without it being linked to a passenger. Airlines had started doing this after the Air India bomb, but not consistently
Go into custody
Quite a few celebrities missed that flight including the sex and the city actress Kim Catrell, Sex Pistols as well as gov officials from other nations
Pan Am, the celebrities and government officials were forewarned that that plane had been targeted. Pan Am discounted that flight so as not to have an empty plane. That's why there were many foreign exchange students on board. They thought they were getting a great deal. I lost a close relative. Major settlements were reached by the families because of government and corporate complacency. Part of the settlements was that the families cannot disclose the heartless gory details of all involved in this slaughter.
I also read a rumor that Christine Cavanaugh was supposed to be on there too, but missed it because she was at a gas station talking to a friend of hers extensively on a pay phone.
The bombing of PA-103 was a tragic loss for Pan Am, those 270 lives didn't deserve to die on this way!, Rest In Peace everyone onboard flight 103
This was the finishing blow to Pan Am, had the bomb failed they might still have been flying, or the end would’ve been sometime between 1995 and 2001.
It was an hour late leaving London, otherwise wreckage would have been @ the bottom of the Atlantic
This was the final hit to pan American world airways survival 😔😔😔
There wasn’t a petrol station there🙄 It was a residential street. I drove past there almost every day.
I drove past at 6am the next morning going south. The Armco in the central reservation was crushed by 103. There was debris everywhere, the road surface was marked by 103. Where a white painted bungalow had been was a massive hole starting immediately at the side of the road.
A shocking sight although the fires had been put out by then.
So sad.. I was just watching a documentary about this flight. The actor that played Larry Tate on bewitched lost his son on this flight.. I believe. Just ridiculous and no reason for this!!
I was 18 years old when this horrific crash happened.
I was 24 stationed in Bamberg, (then W. Germany). We had a guy who flew home (back in the states) for Xmas around the same time this happened. We didn't know he was on that aircraft or not. Thank God he came back okay. I nearly cried when I first saw him. He was a good dude and nobody wanted to see him hurt.
This happened on my 13th birthday
The plane was supposed to blow up over water, but it was delayed taking off.
I was nearly 3 months old
I was 12 when this happened.
Same here...1976.
The worst part of this is that the passenger cabin stayed pretty much intact so passengers were conscious as they fell to their deaths.
Nah…..violent decompression like that more than likely killed them instantly. Just because the cabin was intact doesn’t mean they were still alive as it was falling.
@@thefrase7884 it’s well known that many almost certainly were conscious.
They may have become unconscious quickly due to decompression/lack of oxygen, but regained consciousness as they got closer to the ground. Just awful.
There were signs of some people being conscious for a bit, including a person clutching a crucifix and a woman grabbing tightly her baby.
If they were conscious they were probably in a state of severe shock and confusion. They’d probably be thinking they were dreaming. You definitely wouldn’t be thinking rationally.
Donate me some.
