What are the best books you've read this year? :D
The Alta’s Six
Babel by R.F. Kuang 🤩🤩 so good. Also, The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
The Book Eaters by.Sunyi Dean. Superbly written dark fantasy.
Spin by Robert Charles Wilson, The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne, Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett, The Binding by Bridget Collins, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, The First Law by Joe Abercrombie (I read all six books in this series in one go and fell in love)
The sword of Kaigen
The rose code
Words of radiance
The fifth season
The book of the unnamed midwife
Wrong place wrong time
Translation of my fake dad's review: "I’m ashamed that you’re my daughter. It’s the worst book I’ve read in my life. If you ask me about it again I’ll disown you." Which is of course a joke lol He's 1/3 into it and enjoying it so far!
💀💀💀 the way you just transitioned to the next book with no context lmaoo
Keeping a straight face was so hard haha
So happy you translated. I don't understand French and not even my father, who does know French, didn't understand it
*Impatiently waits for someone that speaks French to watch this*
Really would have lover a translation of it 😂
OMG je suis crampée... Ton père est dur, c'est vraiment un bon livre!! 😂
J'ai adoré 😂 il t'a donné des raisons ?
Non c'est une blague, il va etre sous le choc quand il va voir cette video XD
I said "I’m ashamed that you’re my daughter. It’s the worst book I’ve read in my life. If you ask me about it again I’ll disown you."
Which is obviously a joke. He's 1/3 into it and enjoying it so far!
J'ai pleuré de rire! 😂
You're soooo right about the childfree representation. I'm also childfree and she's the villain everytime. Or she has an illumination and suddently decides that she needs children and becomes "good"!
Oh the second one is so common in movies/tv shows and I hate it -_-
That's the patriarchal way of thinking. That's why US has all those anti abortion laws. It's disgusting 😒
@@BookswithEmilyFox Same here. And the "accident" that makes her realize how empty and sad her life was before. I hate that.
Im looking forward to my “empty sad life” with cats and books 😂
I hear you sister. I am also childfree and honestly I kind of feel like a villain myself because of the backlash I receive every f*cking time I mention it. Am I the bad one tho? I think I am not.
I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and have binged a ton of your vidoes! You have inspired me to try Brandy Sandy and the Lilith's Brood trilogy, already love Kindred. 2022 was not my best reading year but a couple of my 5 star reads were Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, The Last Flight, Fairy Tale, Funny You Should Ask, and An Immense World. And Emily Henry is my favorite romance author!!!!! Thanks for all your thoughtful reviews!
I love how much overlap we have with books and hearing you gush about books I already love too :) It means I have some great new adds for my TBR of the ones I haven't gotten to yet :)
I’m currently reading “Kindred” and loving it, so thanks to you!
So many recs through your videos that I would have never thought to pick up- made it my best reading year too! Looking forward to Octavia Bulter next year!
Love the background especially with that cute sweater. Puts me in the mood to cozy up by the tree and read 📚
Hi Emily! I am Italian and I have read the Whole Brilliant Friend series. In Italy it is now considered by many a modern classic, my Italian professor even organized an international conference where he invited the English translator to talk about the problem of translation and why she (I believe they are a woman) left words in Italian. There are also Post Grads writing thesis about this series of books, because of how ground breaking it was. I highly recommend watching the HBO adaptation as well! It is 100% faithful, all the characters are portrayed by Italian actors and talk on Neapolitan!
We do not yet know who Ferrante is! We know she is a woman, but her true identity has never been disclosed.
I thought I had heard that the translator was revealed to be the author!! Thanks for correcting me
I was about to ask you about that amazing lipstick but thankfully you put it already in the description 😂
Also thank you SO much for putting the book titles in the description as well! Sometimes I struggle to get them right
I have a great year of readings this year, my best books I read this year are : Our Part of the Night by Mariana Enriquez, Kim Jiyoung born in 1982, Notes on Grief by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Rain by Kim Ng Chew, Hundred year of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez,My Cousine Rachel by Daphne du Maurier, Sweet Tooth by Jeff Lemire, 20th Century boys by Naoki Urasawa, and the Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Special mention for Our Wives under the sea by Julia Armfield. Thanks for this video ! ❤
I'm currently reading Wrong Place Wrong Time because of you and I really love it so far💗💗
Yes! Loved Razorblade Tears! I’m putting Octavia Butler on my TBR!
Thank you for providing year with books, love to listen to you✨ Have a great New Year and hollidays, may your biggest wish come true next year.
Emily you are the only person on BookTube I can fully trust. Every book you liked and recommended I ended up loving too! Recently went into Becky Chambers and wow why did I wait so long haha. Bonne année ✨
So happy to hear you’re loving her too! Bonne année!
"Parable of Sower" and "Parable of Talents" were my favorite reads of the year. This was the Octavia E. Butler year for me as well. Loved "Kindred" so much.
been loving audio books recently.. just got thru atomic habits finally and it was definitely helpful!❤
Hey Emily! When hearing you talk about post-apocalyptic books I inmmediatly thought about my favorite book ever called After the Lights Go Out. It's a very character driven story focusing on a small town in Australia and what happens in the following days afters an electromagnetic pulse makes all technology useless. I loved it so much and I'm sure you will too :)
Yayyy my second favorite time of year, only after Halloween. 🎉 Now to add all of these to my 200+ book list (almost all told my Emily), even though it takes me months to read a 200 pg book now 😂 have a good end of year Emily! ❤️
SO EXCITED! 🎄🎅🏻💚🎅🏻📖📙📙📖📚📚📙💚🎅🏻🕎❤️🎄🎅🏻💚💚❤️❤️📚📖📙📙💚💚🎅🏻❤️❤️🕎❤️🎄🎅🏻💚💚❤️❤️📚📖📖💚💚💚🎅🏻🎄❤️🕎🕎❤️🎅🏻💚💚🎄❤️📚📖📖📙💚💚🎅🏻🎄❤️❤️❤️🎅🏻🎅🏻
Wonderful book recommendations-thank you! My faves this year were 2 by Julia London that made me LOL…You Lucky Dog & It Started With A Dog. Very refreshing to read between more intense or dark sci-fi/fantasy!
Razorblade tears was great! And yes, I was emotionally invested in the morally “grey” characters! Never would have picked this up without your reco. 4/5 for me!
I love your list. Razorblade Tears is my top read of this year. My Brilliant Friend has been on-off my TBR this year. I’m surprised you recommended it based on the other reviews I’ve seen. I just read The Christmas Wish by Lindsey Kelk and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll give Emily Henry another go. I’m not drawn to romantic books in general. Finally I think I’m going to try some Octavia E. Butler next year. I’ve only read Kindred (5 star!). Merry Christmas Emily!
There are a lot of romance books that do not romanticize toxic men, quite the opposite! I actually have been seeing a new trend of romanticizing the nice guys, which is awesome! I have very similar taste to you (example, I also hated “the hating game” cause I found it toxic), but I absolutely fell in love with the romance genre in the past 6 months because it’s the most fun and wholesome thing ever (if you find the right books!).
Oh for sure! It's just not my main genre so the few (
I tried the hating game and was so confused about the hype for it, I did not understand their relationship dynamic at all and found them both irritating 💀😬 what are some others you’d recommend instead?
Anything by Emily Henry but also “Dial A for aunties” (the romance takes up only about 10% of the book!), “It happened one summer” for something really fun and over the top, and Abby Jimenez’ books (I find her style similar to Emily Henry’s) :)
@@michelacarletti3671 thanks!!
You and I have such similar reading tastes, I loved almost everything you recommend.
I actually picked up My Brilliant Friends thanks to you, even though it's really not what I usually read, but you sold the book to me, and it's one of my favourites this year 😄
I agree! I binged the whole series over the summer and still can't get it out of my head!
I'm waiting for summer to finish it!
My favourite books of the year were Book Lovers, Know My Name, Carrie Soto Is Back, A Holiday by Gaslight, Animal Farm, Catch and Kill, The Color Purple, Just Mercy, Daisy Jones & The Six and The Winter King. It wasn‘t a bad year for me, definitely better than some of the previous ones.
Small thing but I’m totally adopting "unfamiliar" as my explanation when it comes to Bible stories. For some reason I always feel the need to explain that I didn’t grow up in a religious household & have no clue about any Bible stories. There’s so many references to it (supposedly) in books and I never know what to say about it.. "unfamiliar" is short, sweet, to the point & moves the conversation along lol
East of Eden is my favorite book of all time! I reread it every few years. So happy to see it on a favorites list!
Wrong Time Wrong Place was a total surprise for me. I thought it would be one of those mom finding out secrets about son but wow, it's actually scifi and pretty good! I agree with you that the first half was better than the second half but I guess the ending probably would become the beginning of the next book. I'm not sure if this will turn into a series but it might.
OMG! LOVEE Beach Read and Book Lovers too and Emily Henry so much 💚🎄🎅🏻🎄📚📙📖📖📙📙📙📖🎅🏻💚💚🕎🕎❤️❤️🎄🎅🏻🎅🏻🎄🕎📚📙📖📖🎅🏻🎅🏻💚❤️❤️❤️💚🎅🏻🎅🏻🎄❤️📚📙📖🎅🏻🎅🏻🎄❤️❤️❤️📚
Excited to find out 👀
Ahh im so happy u loved Book Lovers! Love Emily Henry so much and her banter is *chef's kiss*
So happy to see Razorblade Tears and Book Lovers on this list!! Those were so good 🥰
They absolutely deserve the hype!
Hi Emily ! I've bought "The Book of the Unnamed Midwife" and "Kindred" this summer. Can't wait to read your favorites !
(la francophone en moi a beaucoup rigolé 😂)
You'll have to tell me how it goes!
The Book of the Unnamed Midwife is in my read list. Good video.
Adding all these to my list! This year I absolutely loved The Guncle, Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, and....wait for it....Open Book by Jessica Simpson (don't judge, it's great!)
I wasn't a fan of Kindred, but the Brood series sounds super interesting, I've added it to my TBR. My favs this year were, Notes on an Execution, Sign Here, Wrong Place Wrong Time, Nettle + Bone, and Nothing to See Here.
notes on an execution was really good! still one i think about months later.
I just finished reading Razorblade Tears. It was very good. Cosby addressed a lot of issues really well.
Yes! I really liked how he handled the racism/homophobia topics!
I wish I had liked Blacktop Wasteland as much :/
Added so many books to my tbr for 2023 😍
I feel the same about romance books. The amount of romanticized toxic relationships is really problematic. That's why I can't stop raving and recommending "Radiance" by Grace Draven, which is a fantasy romance that can be read as a standalone. It is one of if not the healthiest relationship I've ever read.
I really enjoyed Radiance until the last third of the book. After then everything felt so rushed that it ruined the book for me a little bit. Not loving that one crushed me. lol
Hahaha I really believed you xD Funnily enough, that's truly how my husband reacted when I read him The Picture of Dorian Gray, he really couldn't stand that overly flowery writing style. 🥴
I already had Kindred on my TBR, but you're the one who convinced me to add My Brilliant Friend and East of Eden as well. 🤗
I really loved watching this video, I couldn't help listening even to the genres I'm not interested in, especially because a few of these usually don't work for you. Glad you found new unexpected favourites. ☺️
Ouf classics can be rough. That one I remember that whole chamber where he describes in lenght everything he likes lol
I had to refilm that portion so many times because I kept laughing XD
I've always tried to mix it up genre wise but this year it was really all over the place!
Now that i hear you talk about romance i realize that for the end of the year i'm re reading a short easy romance read. Its called Flipped &, even though it is more of a "highschool read" bc the story ends in their teens, its really a nice read. There are some points were you have some things about certain missunderstandings but to me they make sense bc they mostly happen when they are young. With the story you see them grow & how their relationship changes. The back of my edition says:
" Bryce: all i ever wanted is for juli baker to leave me alone.
But there was no going back, i liked her.
Julie: one look at bryce loski & i became a lunatic.
But all those years i liked him? I never really knew him"
I think you should try it, it isnt an adult read so some things are more surface level but its super intresting. If it catches your eye but not really enough just watch the movie, its a great adaptation
I am also looking forward to Happy Place by Emily Henry.
I haven't got around to reading much this year. We are having a virtual Christmas party Friday the 23rd. Live on our channel. Special author guests are joining us and we are running lots of giveaways. It will be a lot of fun, with a quiz to finish. We are going to be having a few drinks and it may get a little silly. We invite you and your audience to tune in and engage in our fun community chat. Hope to see you there Emily. 😊
I'm also not a big romance reader... but Beach read as become one of my favorite book of all time! Just seing you speaking about it, i want to reread it again 😂
I feel the same way about romance novels as you - was about to give up on contemporary but then found Emily Henry also.
My first Octavia E Butler was the Xenogenisis trilogy, then the Earthseed duology, and then Kindred. Loved them all but Kindred is my fave.
Are you planning on reading the Patternmaster series? I'm hoping to read all 4 next year!
@@BookswithEmilyFox I’ve read the first two, Wild Seed and Mind of my Mind. I do on completing it next year. I enjoyed Wild Seed. Mind of my mind was good but not as good as Wild Seed. But very keen on Clay’s Ark.
Merry Christmas happy holidays Emily! Xoxo 😚 🎄💚❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄💚📚📙📖📖📙📙❤️❤️🎄🕎🕎🎄💚❤️❤️💚🎄🕎🕎🎄🎅🏻💚🎅🏻📚📙📖📖📖❤️💚🎅🏻🎄🕎🕎🎄💚❤️🎅🏻🎅🏻📚📖📖💚🎅🏻🎄🎄🎄🎅🏻
Kindred is one of my favorite reads this year!! And even though the show is a little different than the book, it was still good (in my opinion).
Talking about time loops, have you ever watched the tv series Dark? I think you would love it 🙈
I read the hole series of My Brilliant Friend this year and it is fantastic, can't say wich book is my favourite, just that I love them all hahaha. And besides My Brilliant Friend, some of the best books I read this year were Pachinko, the Daevabad trilogy and The Sound And The Fury
hey! I'm a newbie and loove your videos
Octavia E Butler is my favorite of all time. I also have all her books. And they all get 5 stars. Except her short stories. Fledgling and the Wild Seed series are my favorite
the Best Book I read this year is probably burial rites.
and now I am gonna watch your collection of new faves
If you liked Burial Rights you Need to read The Mercies by K.M. Hargrave! It was my favorite book of 2020
I'm so scared of East of Eden 😫 might have to try it someday
Loved this also I knew these books were gonna be on this list 😂
Here's my best books of 2022
1. Dolores Claiborne by Stephen king
2. The great people by mena suvari her memoir
3. Billy summers by Stephen king
4. Not my father son by Alan Cumming his memoir
5. The cactus by Sarah Haywood
6. The heart principle by helen Huang
7. A King of Battle and blood by scarlett st claire
8. Iron widow
9. The charm offensive by allison Cochrane
10. They never learn by Layne Fargo
Looking beautiful 😍 you inspire my sweater game
You really make me want to read something by Octavia E. Butler! I've read Beach Read and I just didn't like it, for me it was just cliche and nothing special. I was waiting for something more, based on the hype around it. But I would still like to try another book by her but I'm a little scared I won't like that either lol.
I have loved almost all of the books on your list. I have enjoyed Emily Henry’s books too and they are NOT in my genre, I also didn’t like People We Meet on Vacation. Octavia Butler was ahead of her time. East of Eden is the only book I’ve read as an adult where I wish I had read it in a classroom setting where I could have been part of discussions.
I love east of eden I totally agree with you
definitely going to check Butler's books you convinced me
mais la première couverture de liliths brood que tu as montré olala en tant qu'artiste ça fait mal 😭
Elena Ferrante is great! I hope you love the ending of the series, it is truly haunting
Ok, mais là! Je tombe sur ta chaine pour la première fois, je me dit que les recommandations sont intéressantes et PAF! tu es québecoise? Je m'abonne hahaha Can't wait to ear what your dad will say about Razorblade Tears and you made me move a few books on top of my TBR list
Mon accent me trahi lol
I'm sorry but your dad reaction LOL! Who hasnt been threated to be taken off the will once or twice? Also, im adding a few of your books on my 2023 TBR.
Haha he didn’t say that so it’s all good 😂
I swear you’re the only person that reads scifi. Makes me so happy
I don't understand why it's not more popular!
15:28 😂😂😂 geez dad, don’t hold back! Lol
I’m waiting for the phone call after he sees this XD
To be clear he definitely did not say that. He's 1/3 into it and enjoying it lol
All this Emily Henry praise might just actually make me read a romance and I'm terrified
Hi ! I want to share with you about one book: "KAYAN KOLLYN- The spiral of the Ellmott & messenger of the secret." a great fiction of adventure, mystery, ART, an ancient CRAFFARTT, and science. once you read it, you definitely love it, because it speaks about all dimensions of life, without the barrier of the beliefs and social divisions.
Love your content!
Waiting for your review ❤❤❤
I really want to read Wrong Place Wrong Time because of your videos. I think I could easily have ignored it if not for your recommendation
You should check out the novel, The Galactic Time Trap
In my country the only transaction of Emily Henry is People we meet on vacation and there the characters didn't speak for quite some time because of miss communication 😅. I didn't like this book but I'll try book lovers because of you.
I'm reading Beach Read currently and I CANT get past the first 100 pages! I do not know what it is but I was almost about to give up on it. I'm gonna give it another try after this video aaa
I also DNF‘d this under 100 pages. The chemistry and relationship did not work for me. Better luck for your reread to you!
I just watched Reagan’s review of “Light from Uncommon Stars”, and it sounds right up your alley - wholesome SciFi. It seems kind of like Becky Chambers. 🙂
I read it this year and while the beginning is similar, I really didn’t care for the ending or the second half of the book really :/
@@BookswithEmilyFox How did I muss that you read it?!?! I watch all your videos religiously. Must’ve forgotten that one. Whoops!
I read so many this year it's hard to keep up lol
My number one most surprising book of the year was the Justice of kings which is the first grimdark fantasy I've ever read. It is so underated but it was thought provoking and amazingly well written. I loved it. Highly recommend if you are into political fantasy. 😊
My first grimdark was The Blade Itself...so good!
I have to ask you guys, WHEN DO PEOPLE READ?! I started my first job last month.. I wake up at 6:30 and come back from work at 18pm, I’m always hella tired to read or do anything, I have a nap, I have dinner and then at 10:30pm a go to sleep… and repeat everyday 😢 so when do you read? 😩
I did a video about it: ruclips.net/video/-0HApoxY1EA/видео.html
For me when I'm too tired to read even a few minutes, I go for audiobooks (in the shower, while walking, doing dishes, etc.)
can u post the list please?
For all the people that don’t speak French, here’s what the father said: Emily, I’m ashamed that you’re my daughter. It’s the worse book I’ve ever read. If you speak about it one more time I’m going to disown you.
Emily your father seems to be such a nice person. < Si tu me parle encore une fois de ce livre je te déshérite… > Merci papa chéri!
Je n’ai jamais parlé de cette façon à mes enfants et j’ai lu le livre!. Je suis choqué 😱 ! You never know how your child will react.
He didn't say that at all, I made it up lol
Your dad hating the book is so funny. I thought you where going to say how much he loves it XD
He’s actually enjoying it so far! He’s not done yet, I was just joking lol
I need to pick up legends & lattes 😤
Just a note on My Brilliant Friend...it takes place in Naples...not a small town :) I agree it is a great book...all 4 of them :)
I looked it up because I could have sworn they grew up in a small town. Apparently they were from an isolated neighborhood. Thanks for the heads up!
@@BookswithEmilyFox ❤️ Naples is a crazy, beautiful, passionate chaotic city. If you ever get a chance to visit, I highly recommend the experience ❤️ Also, the oldest pizzeria in the world is there.
EMILY!!!! God damn it, Emily.... So I read Kindred. Wtf were you thinking!? That book was so depressing. Fascinating, extremely well written, and thought provoking but by the end I felt sick. I would never be able to reread it. I enjoyed it though. OEB is a great writer, I have to say. I haven't stopped thinking about it since I finished it.
Haha sorry (but not really!). I was feeling the same when finishing Parable of the Talents "one of the best books I've ever read and I never want to reread it!" That's how her books are lol
Last one at the party by Bethany Clift is a brilliant post apocalyptic book (& written by a woman!)
East of Eden,Cannery Row,Of Mice and Men,The Grapes of Wrath!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
(Note: I live in South Korea) Many Korean men will lose their minds if a woman publicly “comes out” as a feminist. Literally in the recent summer Olympics there was a female athlete who won 3 (3!!!) gold medals for South Korea in archery…but her hair was short (gasp!) and there were a ton of men demanding she be stripped of her medals because she “looked like a feminist.” It was absolutely disgusting. Of course there a ton of great men in SK but there are also a TOOON of angry incels.
I think a lot of people see kpop/kdrama and don't realize that it's not reality :/
I could not agree more 50 for The People We Meet on Vacation. It feels like it was written by a different author and no chemistry.
This has possibly been my worst reading year. Not when it comes to number of books, though. I’ve just barely had any 5 star reads.
Oh no that sucks! I hope you'll have a better time in 2023!
Same here! Read a lot but not very many stand-outs. Here’s hoping we both have better reading years in 2023!
I love Kim Jiyoung, born 1982.
Also, the backlash against Irene when she recommended this was weird (and kind of emphasises the point of the book) because I know RM of BTS also recommended it and I don’t remember any backlash for him 🙄
I am shocked (not) lol I guess at least some people will pick it up so we'll take it!
Look at us reading Korean lit because of idols. I read the same book because Kim Namjoon of BTS recommended it & I loved it!
Please translate what your dad's thoughts were, I'm so curious
"I'm ashamed that you're my daughter. This is the worst book I've read in my life. If you speak of it again, I'll disown you." Which is of course a joke lol My poor dad had no idea. He's enjoying the book so far!
Not a best of the year, but I have finished The Three Musketeers and enjoyed it 20x more than The Count of Monte Cristo
So far I'm liking it!
Hey! I’m doing a video series on my channel in 2023 of reading my favorite booktubers best books of 2022. Would it be okay to include you?
Of course!
@@BookswithEmilyFox Thank you! So excited to read your favorites :)
I read Book of the Unnamed Midwife a year or so ago. There were parts I hated and parts I loved. I gave it 4 stars ... but still not sure I can keep reading the series. Perplexing, huh.
I hate the cover of My Brilliant Friend --- but you're convincing me to try it.
HAAHAHA, Emily! Super critique livre, ton papa! 😅
C'est une blague! Il n'a pas fini, mais pour l'instant il l'aime lol
1982 was great!
I have 10 days left and 10 books to complete my 100 book reading goal *pressure*
Ouf that's rough! I have some recommendations (some REALLY SHORT but fantastic books!) if you want ruclips.net/video/1uJ0g6lLvKc/видео.html
@@BookswithEmilyFox Thank you, Emily! You're my reading fairy god mother! :)
Most hated character in Parable of the Talents? You mean almost everyone who isn't an actual child? Pretty much every adult in that book disturbed me somehow.
Okay you're right lol
SPOILERS
But Mark can choke.
My issue with “People we meet on vacation” is that the relationship felt incesteous . You’re correct, there was no chemistry. That’s my issue with friends to lovers. If it is a YA I can buy if it or if it is a short term friendship I can deal with it but to be friends for years I get the ick.
My issue with that book was also that I read the whole book with this massive buildup to ~what could have possibly happened~ and the reveal was so... anticlimactic
Only a side note... But what did your dad actually say? I don't speak french and I don't get anything 🤣🤣
"I’m ashamed that you’re my daughter. It’s the worst book I’ve read in my life. If you ask me about it again I’ll disown you."
It's a joke though lol He's enjoying it so far and had no idea I would mention anything in this video... needless to say he was a little shocked XD
@@BookswithEmilyFox thanks so much for answering!
