Alloys and spoiler mainly to be rid of the world's ugliest plastic hubcaps and improve the 'droopy-trunk' styling. My father use to own a 99’ Nissan Maxima. It was a smooth ride. And when I look back and I see them on the road, those are sweet cars. New maxima looks nice but they started to go bleh. So those 99’ are damn nice rides.
I was looking for a maxima , over here its called a cefiro couple years ago when I’m looking for a car. Heard the engine is smooth like butter and the bells and whistles inside are pretty sweet for a 90s car. Too bad didn’t get one at the end of day because used car dealers are scams and owners either don’t sell theirs or its just in crappy shape
Aaaaaaah! You telling me? I am proud former owner of same '99 Maxima - crashed it, then bought from 72yo man '03 Maxima in 2014 with 47k mileage!!! Added 60k to date and never been happier. Amazing vehicle! Regular service - no problems whatsoever.
@@yungblade7 Yeah, they're great. I had a 5th gen and that was even better (really liked how that one looked, it was an '03 SE Titanium edition). I currently still have a 6th gen one which is still an awesome daily driver.
My 2007 Nissan frontier Manual transmission just hit 464k miles. Same engine and transmission. No major problems. I keep up with the regular maintenance.
I really miss my 4th gen maxima. It was a 96 SE 5 speed manual. Such as amazing car. Comes from the factory with a VLSD differential and was not only very quick (0-60 in 6.6 sec, 1/4mile in the mid-low 15's stock) but was reliable and super practical. All around a great car.
My Dad had a 90s Altima back in the day. I remember him saying it basically needed a tune-up, new plugs and oil change and stuff. I'm not sure how long he ran it like that but I do remember he went a whole winter without doing anything to it and it ran perfectly. Said it was the most reliable car he's ever owned next to his Maxima.
@henree simp Not much of a Toyota guy buy my wifes mom gave us her 2002 camery for free and it has 190,000 miles and still runs grwat So yes i would agree the older camerys are good 👍
YESSSSS! I have a 95, fully loaded black on black with a standard. I LOVE IT! Best car I've ever owned. This series is super reliable but so underrated. Hopefully, now that will change. It's luxury brother, the Infiniti i30, is equally great, shares same driveline. You don't see these cars for sale often because they're so good.
Renault company makes very good and reliable cars. They sell very well in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. But Americans won't find out how reliable it is unless they give up the old-fashioned V8 engines that consume more than a truck.
Was still goalie as far as the later 2000 years...Had an 07 Infinity (Nissan) G35 6spd manual for 11 years Sold it last year only because I needed an suv to take my lil one around. Never had a single issue. Extremely reliable. Miss driving it!
I've got an Renault-based '08 Versa with 214k miles, in spite of losing the heater core, & head gasket leak (i used blu devil) last year, it still starts up every morning
I have a 2001 Maxima GLE that’s needed basically zero service apart from routine maintenance in all of its 22 years. Apart from the headlight and taillight shape it’s identical to the 4th generation. Rusty but trusty, starts right up every time.
Scotty, you brought back a lot of memories on Datsun/Nissan. My mom owned a '78 Datsun B210 hatchback. It was a small, but very well made car. My mom really liked it. I drove that car around when I was a kid. I remember my grandfather telling me that the car would be in the junkyard in 5 years; it outlived him. I owned an '83 Nissan 720 Pick-up. It was a good truck, and I drove it for 15 years and learned how work on vehicles with that truck. The truck is long gone, but I still have the factory repair manual for it! Now for one better than the Maxima. My wife bought an '89 Nissan Sentra when it was about a year old from a rental car company. She was driving it when I first met her in '92. I have meticulously maintained the car over the last 23 years and she's still driving it. I've changed out some things, but the main things are all original. The car is still going strong. The problem I'm starting to have is that some parts aren't available anymore, things like the air flow sensor. I've offered to buy my wife a Mustang, a Camry, a Lexus, and she just says, "I love my little car." Our mechanic says that it's the best maintained Nissan in our state. It's been a great car, and it was Made in Japan in the glory days. Thanks for the great video and bringing back those great memories of Datsun and Nissan!
Lexton Ravaee ive got a 2000 too with 190k miles. Only thing that has went wrong is the alternator. The OEM alternator when out at 189,000 miles! If that isn’t a testament to Japanese quality, I don’t know what is.
I had one of these, got it up to 275,000 miles before I let it go. It still ran perfect when I sold it, just sold it to get something newer. It had great acceleration as well. If it was manual I probably would have kept it.
@CheezusCrust wouldn't go that far. While they are reliable and you might like them, there isn't as many frontiers on the road as tacomas and that's including all of the newer and older ones. User ratings from the frontiers averages out to a 6.2/10 whereas the Tacoma averages out to a 7.7/10.... 🤷🏻♂️
My girlfriend's dad bought a '96 Maxima, same generation, back when they were brand new, he eventually passed it down to my girlfriend when she was in college, now I'm driving it today, 25 years later. Still trucking along with 207,246mi on it. Reliable car. Solid engine and auto transmission.
I've got a 97 Maxima . It was an engine built to handle 500 hp detuned to 200 hp. There are guys on RUclips that have turbo charged them to 500+ hp and they hold up. The 99 was the last of that gen. 200 hp was actually pretty good for the years it was made. Very comparable to the upscale BMW 5 series for that time but way more reliable.
Actually owned one. A Manual. Loved taking my siblings to church in it straight up. I have driven the Avalon lately. Found a great place to reserve one.
We got a 97 we’ve had for 16 years., brought t our kid home from the hospital when she was born and now the kid drives it, 240 k miles and everything still works and no major repairs. Kid autocrossed it last year and it held up! It’s getting tired though
When they made great product, they managed their financials poorly. When they got better financial management, their products' quality dropped. But, now with Ghosn gone, hopefully they'll slowly regain those spirits in the 90's
Nissan cars may suck However my 2013 Frontier has been bullet proof 7 years 260.000 miles One broken leaf spring. Wife hit a loose TT rim on the highway . Just replaced struts and shocks with Bilstien and Old Man Emu leafs The truck runs and drives like new. Not a spot of rust. Truck has spent it's entire life in Up State NY in the Finger Lakes. I will be buying another soon.
I had a ‘99 Maxima SE. Great car except for the ignition coils, which were a known weakness. I ended up selling it to get something that could haul more stuff since the Maxima’s seat didn’t fold down.
Yes!! My first car was a 1997 (same model) Nissan Maxima GLE. My parents got it for me in High School. I looooooved that car. It was luxury and sporty!
Yes I've owned the same vehicle year/color/trim put 180k miles only replaced starter (did it myself easy job)at 120k that's all. Sold it still running today. The best Nissan ever.
Yesss! I had a ‘97, and I’m sure I would still be driving it if it didn’t aggressively rust away! Right before I got rid of it, I took it to get struts replaced and the mechanic is told me he couldn’t do it because the entire undercarriage and wheel assembly was rusted out. I bought it with high mileage and got it to almost 300k miles. The motor was still whisper quiet and strong the day I took it to the junk yard. That car was the most comfortable and most enjoyable car I have ever driven!!! And it was fast!! Every time I see one on the road or in a parking lot somewhere, I wish I could have kept it!
One of favorite cars I ever had was a 2002 Maxima (Made in Japan) with a six speed manual. That VQ35 engine was bullet proof! The only reason I had to get rid of it was because the body and frame was disintegrating from rust. I live up in Ottawa, ON, Canada so there's no shortage of salt on the roads during winter. Otherwise it was a great car and fun to drive.
that looks exactly like mine. But mine is 5 speed. Its been sitting in the garage for over 10 years now. I want to sell it, but i can only get $350 for it... It has a perfect body and paint. My wife just wants it out of the garage, but it is the fastest car I have ever owned. I loved driving it. I parked it because the front wheel bearing went out. I replaced it, and found the half axle on that wheel also was out. And I just never got to it.
Pre 2000 Nissan VQ series are modern marvels. My VQ20De did 300,000k before it went out. Only because of years of bad fuel, untimely servicing and & radiator clogging. Letting all those things persist over the course of the last 3 years of its lifespan nailed the coffin for that engine. & thr funny thing is, a full engine job would have recoditioned and fixed everything but would have taken 2 months to do. Time.was not on our side so we just bought a used engine. I agree, 1999 maxima/cefiro/altima is the last real gem from a very japanese nissan
@@victorblock3421 that is true however over the years some car companies have rapidly declined in terms of quality more than others and I think Nissan is one of them
Yeah, so I bought my one-owner, top-spec '98 UKDM Maxima (called QX in Europe) in 2012 with 57k miles on the clock. Shipped it back to NZ in 2018 coz didn't want to sell it to some Brit who would have just trashed it. My brother still has his '95 JDM Maxima (called Cefiro) with the 140HP VQ20DE engine and for a 2-liter V6 that he's had for 15 years now, it still hustles.
Steel Talon - they are - I’ve seen a few articles that suggest Nissan Japan is trying maneuver their relationship w Renault and revitalize their lineup and offerings
I still own one of these and I will never give it up. This car and the Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Vic all the Panther platform cars, better get one before they're all gone..
@@Proxyyy825 It's funny because you know people wonder how to save money build up a savings etc. Cars like the Panther platforms are exactly how you do that. Buy something that you get once and can still be driving it two decades later. Easy to work on, parts everywhere and cheap. Let the suckers in the new cars that look at you like you're dumb think that they are winning the game with their empty bank accounts from their $600 note.
Really miss my 95 Maxima SE best car I ever owned 380k on it when it got totaled. Timing chain tensioner, water pump and fuel injectors where the only things changed on the motor. The trans was rebuilt once and normal maintenance. Even had automatic climate control and heated seats. Everything still worked after 20 years. Awesome car
I have a 99 Maxima and it's got over 325,000 miles although mine wasn't taken very good care of. Doing the coils plugs valve cover seals rebuilding the injectors because the pintle caps were broken knock sensor fuel filter purge valve etcetera
As a huge Toyota fan I had 2 of these, a 97 and 98.. They were great cars as long as they didn't rust.. They did better with premium fuel, but the drive train was solid as hell.
I am the original owner of a 2002 Nissan Xterra. I have replaced the timing belt twice. Paid once, did it my self second time. Replaced water pump, alternator, front brakes, u-joints, radiator twice-dropped hood on a tool-oops, 180k miles, two sets of shocks. Been happy with it. Everything still works
One of my favorite vehicles, that I used to own, was a 1992 Nissan Sentra E coupe. It had a GA16DE engine, a four-speed manual transmission, manual windows, manual locks, no power steering, and steel wheels. I bought it with 85,000 miles on it, and it finally gave out at 481,000 miles.
Nissans of that era were generally better than toyotas in value and performance , while offering fantastic reliability. Renault later said Nissan overspent on parts by a huge margin and ruined things by cutting costs excessively.
Nissan Maxima are the best I ever had. I have a 1997 and has 354,000 mileage and just last month engine started linking. Transmission still good with BOSS speaker. Which it’s awesome. I have no complain ... for the mileage ... AMAZING! 👍🏼🚗
Daughter had a '99 Maxima for a good while. She had to have the muffler replaced twice (it's at the back of the car). She drove the wheels off of that car. She got married and wanted something bigger. Her Maxima was a good car. Loved that V-6 engine. Close relative of the Z-car engine, I understood.
Many cars have the muffler in a forward position under the car. They run hotter and are less prone to acidic condensation and last longer as a result. When mufflers are at the rear of the car they run cooler and are more prone to acidic condensation and will fail more often. Ask Scotty.
I have a 2000 maxima and a 2002 maxima which I bought new and I still have them up to this date. The quality actually starting dropping in 2004 when the maxima was no longer built and assembled in japan. So 2003 was the last great maxima Nissan ever built. 😢
You know Scotty with over 3 million subscribers, you drive up the resale value on these inexpensive rides & make it hard for cheapskates like myself! I love your content! Wish you were here in Southern California.
JDM FR3AK yea. Their Nissan Titan is good and honestly the only good thing that Nissan makes other than of course the old Frontier. 370z, and Gt-r but those are good only because they were created pre-Renault. Honestly they should really make the new Frontier good and reliable like the Titan while also being competitive against other mid-size pickup trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado etc. It is crucial for them to be doing good in at least the midsize pickup range. Because the Titan is such a flop that I don’t see it getting a new generation sadly.

Added 5 factory alloy wheels ($100), a trunk-spoiler ($45 including matching trunk-lid), and upgraded to 2000-01 Altima headlights.
Parts from Pick-N-Pull and Ebay.
Alloys and spoiler mainly to be rid of the world's ugliest plastic hubcaps and improve the 'droopy-trunk' styling. Most important - the spoiler is visible through the back window as a parking-aid, and provides a level area for boxes and packages while I'm unlocking the rear door!

03 Maxima's are awesome
4th gen maximas are beasts
@@yungblade7 Yeah, they're great. I had a 5th gen and that was even better (really liked how that one looked, it was an '03 SE Titanium edition). I currently still have a 6th gen one which is still an awesome daily driver.
Haha same! Crashed a 98 , got a 96 everything worked... Very comfortable, solid speed and cornering, reliable. Great car
My 2007 Nissan frontier Manual transmission just hit 464k miles. Same engine and transmission. No major problems. I keep up with the regular maintenance.
Scotty won't work on a car unless it has leaves stuffed under the hood!
Sean Thompson Scotty likes working on cars that fix themselves.
True! 😆
Almost always leaves!
I have a 98 Nissan Sentra manual

YESSSSS! I have a 95, fully loaded black on black with a standard. I LOVE IT! Best car I've ever owned. This series is super reliable but so underrated. Hopefully, now that will change. Do hope Nissan and Renault split up I’m a Nissan fan they make really good looking cars.
Renault company makes very good and reliable cars. They sell very well in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. But Americans won't find out how reliable it is unless they give up the old-fashioned V8 engines that consume more than a truck.
I had a 96 maxima with a 5 speed. I loved that car!! Sold it at 240000 miles. I won’t hesitate to get another one
I also have a 96 Maxima 246000 miles. Car take a long time to start
You should've kept that maxima and performed some maintenance on it. Those Vq30/35 motors are awesome.
Was still goalie as far as the later 2000 years...Had an 07 Infinity (Nissan) G35 6spd manual for 11 years
Sold it last year only because I needed an suv to take my lil one around.

I have a 2001 Maxima GLE that’s needed basically zero service apart from routine maintenance in all of its 22 years. Apart from the headlight and taillight shape it’s identical to the 4th generation. Rusty but trusty, starts right up every time.
Love me a Datsun. Maximas rock.
My daily driver is a 1998 Maxima GLE for the last 6 years. Thanks for the video Scotty!
Mine too!
I have a 1992 Toyota corolla sprinter with 4A-GE engine and manual transmission - still runs great .
i have a 2000 nissan maxima and i love it, 248,000 miles and still daily driving
Lexton Ravaee ive got a 2000 too with 190k miles. Only thing that has went wrong is the alternator. The OEM alternator when out at 189,000 miles! If that isn’t a testament to Japanese quality, I don’t know what is.

01 Maxima SE Smooth At 143,000
I had one of these, got it up to 275,000 miles before I let it go. It still ran perfect when I sold it, just sold it to get something newer. It had great acceleration as well. If it was manual I probably would have kept it.
Get a Frontier in one of your videos Scotty!
@CheezusCrust Frontier from that gen is a value for money..the best midsize ever made.
The brand new Frontier's tray is pretty flimsy and twists easily
@CheezusCrust wouldn't go that far. While they are reliable and you might like them, there isn't as many frontiers on the road as tacomas and that's including all of the newer and older ones. User ratings from the frontiers averages out to a 6.2/10 whereas the Tacoma averages out to a 7.7/10.... 🤷🏻♂️
Especially when there was a 2007 Frontier that reached 1 million miles.
@CheezusCrust the sales generally reflect how good they are.
Found a great place to reserve one.
bought I 99 maxima with 60,000 on it a couple years ago. I love that car

Hitachi ignition coils, keep em handy
We got a 97 we’ve had for 16 years., brought t our kid home from the hospital when she was born and now the kid drives it, 240 k miles and everything still works and no major repairs. Kid autocrossed it last year and it held up! It’s getting tired though
Bring back the Nissan, that built cars for the HUMAN RACE.
I have a 93 maxima as a daily with 425k in miles still running strong ,
Yes I've owned the same vehicle year/color/trim put 180k miles only replaced starter (did it myself easy job)at 120k that's all. Sold it still running today. The best Nissan ever.
Scotty sure knows how to sell a car!
What octane you put in it?
that looks exactly like mine.
In Central America, I saw nothing but 90’s Nissans. No wonder
Always i wanted to see an honest video about this car, and i see it today. It's my first video about this car. Very happy to hear that is a good car.
I seen one with 341k miles. I was in disbelief. U talking about getting your monies worth 👍
I never thought I'd live to see the day when Scotty did a positive review for Nissan. Most impressive 💪
All Nissans in the 90's were great cars, as good as Toyota, Honda, Mazda.
@@victorblock3421 that is true however over the years some car companies have rapidly declined in terms of quality more than others and I think Nissan is one of them

As a huge Toyota fan I had 2 of these, a 97 and 98.. They were great cars as long as they didn't rust.. They did better with premium fuel, but the drive train was solid as hell.

Only if you get the manual transmission.
JDM FR3AK the new 2021 Nissan Frontier is probably gonna be ruined and turned to crap like all other new Nissans.
David Zuluaga hopefully not they been doing good on there truck platform.
This sample of a 99 Maxima is well taken care of. Most cars if taken care of with routine maintenance will last a good while.
