Do you recommend the new VW Buzz, the VW electric buss concept coming out?
What are your thoughts on the 3600 V6
I have a 2014 Acura MDX that has 86k miles and the transmission is shifting hard. Hard to believe that at 86k miles the transmission needs to be replaced. Ive never missed a maintenance. What are your thoughts?
Nissan hell no scoty
Scotty, do you ever like any vehicles for tall people? Some of us are over 6 feet tall.
See....Scotty isn't just a Toyota fan...he just liked dependable cars.
FACTS💯💯💯💯
Don't forget, inexpensive too, that's our Scotty, He's not a hater He just hates bad car companies.
That my favorite comment I see!
@Steve Silvas If dead presidents were all Scotty cared about, why not endorse the cars that would keep his repair business in the green....like GM for instance?
No he should be Toyota fan because they are good
You know a car is well made when you still see them on the road 20 years later. I still see these around. The paint is faded, they have some scratches and dents, but they are still going.
komradkolonel exactly. About the only 20 year cars I still see around are these and 90s Toyota Camry’s and corolla’s.
@Al-Tamimiif that can be done in a country that lays down road salt in the winter then it is far more impressive
Yes I see them alot myself.
What about Saturn's? Lol common Scotty when you gonna give Saturn cars some respect? Lol
@@03056932 " lays down road salt" I looked at AutoTrader the other day and saw a 98 Nissan Maxima. Unfortuantely it was in Minnesota...... and had rust on the sides.
I have a 99 Altima, it runs like a dream. All my friends who bought newer models, have since replaced them, still got my old boy, 198000 miles and going. 😍😍😍
I have a 2002 Altima SE with basically the same drivetrain as the Maxima in the video except I have the 3.5L engine.
Still running great after 240k. Everything is original under the hood except for one fuel injector and the fuel rail pressure regulator.
I have a 97 Maxima GLE 235,000 miles. Still runs great. Original motor/trans.
My '99 is about to hit 100k miles
This person took good care of his car. The interior still looks like new
D.O.A. Perhaps
Never driven !!!!
yes, but also the fabric (clothes) used in that maxima model is of very high quality, just yesterday I just saw one similar to that, with the interior in excellent condition
I have a 2000 I drive it everyday to work in construction field. Just quality materials used!!!
@@robertc7531 that was before Renault took over Nissan
Yes this Maxima is very reliable and the real Nissan car quality that last very long time, no garbage CVT and Renault involvements, u absolutely right Scotty!
My brother in law have that car with a Manual very fast and I drove it and it's stupid fast I love that car
@@1985toyotacamry i totally agree and the current Maxima should have manual as well or at least 8 speed automatic not that disastrous CVT!!! Such a big mistake from Nissan.
@@abt4702 they did it with the Accord a 10 speed auto or a 6 speed manual. Maybe the next refresh they should at least compete with the Accord 2.0 sport 6 speed. Like go back to their roots. And maybe they would actually sell some good cars.
@@1985toyotacamry Exactly, the current Maxima engine is superb in terms of performance but pairing with CVT was the dumbest mistake by Nissan ever! I had it but the reason i got rid of it bcs of CVT. This Maxima deserves MANUAL or DCT not garbage CVT! I really hope Nissan will recover from that mess they did and start making good cars again.
Yes he is they were good cars what really killed Nissan was the CVT
My pops still got a 1997 max still going strong same transmission and engine at 338k
That's impressive
My sister still has her 99 maximal that has 428k on the clock and its backup for whenever anyones car breaks down. Runs like a new car
Amazing to go threw the comments and hear these stories of Nissan's going for ever
Pops is a smart man.
@Silver N Black Mopar coming from someone with an FCA product as a profile pic don't think any FCA would last more then 150k miles even the viper was plague problems!
I owned a 99 Maxima sold it with 159k on it. Drove it from Denver, CO to San Francisco It was climbing the mountains as if driving on the flat land. Impressive car
It makes me cry when I watch this video. Nissan used to be my favorite company.
Toyota Executives: *Wait now hold on a minute*
The boys at Nissan: *WOOO*
Toyota has nothing to worry about. 😉. By the way, the new RAV4 hybrid is an excellent American car. (2020s are built in Kentucky)
@Rob Basque scarebus!
That's hilarious
Will never beat a toyota
@Rob Basque ya even we had a 2011 micra and it was ok on the road then we got a 2015 showroom one and it is as rough as anything and there's tons of vibration in the car especially the floor and it's very noisy engine it's like it was made for a 6 not 5 speed
That car with the 5spd was a sleeper too back in the day .
Agreed. The 90s Maximas with a 5 speed manual were sweet indeed. Just got a 96 SE a little over a month ago. She hasn't been treated the best but I'm in the process of putting her back to rights. The guy who sold it to me told me his mechanic said that it needed a water pump and the No. 5 injector replaced and his wife didn't want to put the money into it so they sold it to me for $600.
That's true I had a 91 & 96 maxima SE both 5sp & they were fast . But the 96 was way faster & had great power when u stepped on it !!
My auto trans is on its way out but my buddy gave me a donor car to do a 5spd swap which I'm planning on doing once the weather is more favorable.
RUclips Mexican guy Nissan Maxima this dude smokes cars at the drag race track 😂
@@matthewwach7693 you're gonna have fun with that. I did the 5 speed swap about 10 years ago to one of my many maximas along with the plastic intake manifold from the 2000-2001 models. Did a 3.5 swap later on and till this day is probably my favorite project.
I bought my 1996 nissan maxima GLE with 87,000 miles on it while still a senior in high school. I'm 35 now, it now has over 237,000 miles. Original transmission and engine still going strong, not a single electrical issue, AC still blows cold. Haven't had to do anything other than an alternator and starter, and of course keeping up with engine oil, transmission oil, brake fluid, steering fluid, coolant, spark plugs, etc. This car will probably outlast me!
*Someone forgot about the 1 million mile Nissan Frontier with 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual that's all original.*
Nissan has to go back to its roots by bringing back it's Datsun
Nissan has to go back to it's roots by telling the Europeans to GTFO and start building good cars again.
More like.....DEADSOON....
Their was strong talk from Nissan they were going to do just that. Read that: Was.
They still make Datsun in other countries like India and Russia
@@xFlared I like that that a good one
Aaaaaaah! You telling me? I am proud former owner of same '99 Maxima - crashed it, then bought from 72yo man '03 Maxima in 2014 with 47k mileage!!! Added 60k to date and never been happier. Amazing vehicle! Regular service - no problems whatsoever.
03 Maxima's are awesome
4th gen maximas are beasts
@@yungblade7 Yeah, they're great. I had a 5th gen and that was even better (really liked how that one looked, it was an '03 SE Titanium edition). I currently still have a 6th gen one which is still an awesome daily driver.
Haha same! Crashed a 98 , got a 96 everything worked... Very comfortable, solid speed and cornering, reliable. Great car
Got a 2001 Maxima, 260,000 miles and going strong!
When you said good Nissan, I knew it had to be 20+ years old! Those maximas are some great cars, I'd love to find one in good shape with a 5 speed manual!
I have a 1995 Nissan Maxima myself bought it with 161k miles now has 164k miles still runs great.
Sweet I have a 96 with 166k miles, I've been restoring it the past year or so.
For how much did you bought it ?
Can i buy it off you?
I will drive across the cou try if i have to. Screw my 2014 Versa Note.
@@JoeUrbanYYC Yep, all the 90's Nissans Hondas and Toyotas were absolute bulletproof. Still have my 99' Accord V6 (FOR 13 YEARS) and it runs smooth as butter
@@josephbell2160 nice my next car might be a 99 Acura TL
I had a 1998 Nissan Altima for a few years. I had no trouble with getting to school and back. It was just a nice reliable car .
Still driving the '98 Altima I bought in 2005 with 124K. It now has almost 220K, and it's the second most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Most reliable was an '87 Isuzu pickup!
What did you pay for it? Might be a good project car to leave in my driveway and fix up for cheap.
Thanks!
@@henri6595 I paid $3400 in 2005. At the time, comparable Camrys and Accords were going fior $5000 - $6000 +. I've been 'fixing it up' as my poor-man's 'Maxima sport-sedan' for the past few years. Added 5 factory alloy wheels ($100), a trunk-spoiler ($45 including matching trunk-lid), and upgraded to 2000-01 Altima headlights.
Parts from Pick-N-Pull and Ebay.
Alloys and spoiler mainly to be rid of the world's ugliest plastic hubcaps and improve the 'droopy-trunk' styling. Most important - the spoiler is visible through the back window as a parking-aid, and provides a level area for boxes and packages while I'm unlocking the rear door!
Thanks for the reply! What would you say the real world MPG is, considering all the years and miles?
@@henri6595 this was way back in 2002, my parents go it used and it was there for my brother and I for about 5 years. It ran fine and eventually they sold it off. No problems with it and did the job getting me and brother from point A to B.
I really miss my 4th gen maxima. It was a 96 SE 5 speed manual. Such as amazing car. Comes from the factory with a VLSD differential and was not only very quick (0-60 in 6.6 sec, 1/4mile in the mid-low 15's stock) but was reliable and super practical. All around a great car.
"This Nissan is better than a Toyota"
*Hold my Celica*
Isn't that the truth.
Yes only this model
@henree simp Not much of a Toyota guy buy my wifes mom gave us her 2002 camery for free and it has 190,000 miles and still runs grwat So yes i would agree the older camerys are good 👍
Not much of Toyota guy either but I'd love for the Celica to come back. Mainly for my NFS Underground nostalgia and I'd consider buying one I guess.

Scotty won't work on a car unless it has leaves stuffed under the hood!
Sean Thompson Scotty likes working on cars that fix themselves.
True! 😆
Almost always leaves!
You could party in that thing like it's 1999
My daily driver is a 1998 Maxima GLE for the last 6 years. Thanks for the video Scotty!
Mine too!
👍for reliable cars. Thanks for the thoughts on the low profile tires Scotty. I couldn't figure out why my new car rode so poorly. Now I know.
Future Kilmer, "Charge up your Capacitors." Probably not.
Here's why toyota's naturally aspirated batteries are reliable.
Then you get this higher and higher pitched charging noise :))))))
Flux capacitors yay
YESSSSS! I have a 95, fully loaded black on black with a standard. I LOVE IT! Best car I've ever owned. This series is super reliable but so underrated. Hopefully, now that will change. It's luxury brother, the Infiniti i30, is equally great, shares same driveline. You don't see these cars for sale often because they're so good.
I use to own a 99 Maxima SE with sporty alloy wheels and fog lights, this brought me memories.
Do hope Nissan and Renault split up I’m a Nissan fan they make really good looking cars.
Renault company makes very good and reliable cars. They sell very well in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. But Americans won't find out how reliable it is unless they give up the old-fashioned V8 engines that consume more than a truck.
My father use to own a 99’ Nissan Maxima. It was a smooth ride. And when I look back and I see them on the road, those are sweet cars.
New maxima looks nice but they started to go bleh. So those 99’ are damn nice rides.
I was looking for a maxima , over here its called a cefiro couple years ago when I’m looking for a car. Heard the engine is smooth like butter and the bells and whistles inside are pretty sweet for a 90s car. Too bad didn’t get one at the end of day because used car dealers are scams and owners either don’t sell theirs or its just in crappy shape
Ya I especially hate the cheap looking plastic black grills

My girlfriend's dad bought a '96 Maxima, same generation, back when they were brand new, he eventually passed it down to my girlfriend when she was in college, now I'm driving it today, 25 years later. Still trucking along with 207,246mi on it. Reliable car. Solid engine and auto transmission.
Yes!! My first car was a 1997 (same model) Nissan Maxima GLE. My parents got it for me in High School. I looooooved that car. It was luxury and sporty!
My Dad had a 90s Altima back in the day. I remember him saying it basically needed a tune-up, new plugs and oil change and stuff. I'm not sure how long he ran it like that but I do remember he went a whole winter without doing anything to it and it ran perfectly. Said it was the most reliable car he's ever owned next to his Maxima.
I have a 98 Nissan Sentra manual
Scotty: "The A/C, still blows cold as can be!"
The Nissan: set to heat
2:10
Haha. Good catch🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Ac wasn’t even on
I had a ‘99 Maxima SE. Great car except for the ignition coils, which were a known weakness. I ended up selling it to get something that could haul more stuff since the Maxima’s seat didn’t fold down.
Just bought a 99' Altima with 120k miles. Really good condition with absolutely no issues whatsoever
I had a 96 maxima with a 5 speed. I loved that car!! Sold it at 240000 miles. I won’t hesitate to get another one
I also have a 96 Maxima 246000 miles. Car take a long time to start
You should've kept that maxima and performed some maintenance on it. Those Vq30/35 motors are awesome.
Love me a Datsun. Maximas rock.
Actually owned one. A Manual. Loved taking my siblings to church in it straight up. I have driven the Avalon lately. Found a great place to reserve one.
Your the man Scotty!!
I love how you say the A/C blows cold as can be and the thermostat is set a little on the warm side. That says a lot if its blowing cold. I have a nissan maxima 2000 model and man I can really put that car through some real street racing and it doesn't give up. Those engines are amazing!!
Have a great day Scotty! My neighbours watch your channel too, cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Get a Frontier in one of your videos Scotty!
@CheezusCrust Frontier from that gen is a value for money..the best midsize ever made.
The brand new Frontier's tray is pretty flimsy and twists easily
@CheezusCrust wouldn't go that far. While they are reliable and you might like them, there isn't as many frontiers on the road as tacomas and that's including all of the newer and older ones. User ratings from the frontiers averages out to a 6.2/10 whereas the Tacoma averages out to a 7.7/10.... 🤷🏻♂️
Especially when there was a 2007 Frontier that reached 1 million miles.
@CheezusCrust the sales generally reflect how good they are.
Hey Scotty just picked up a Nissan Altima . With the VC turbo engine ...
I only got because you speak so well about Nissan.
I almost got a Camry but I noticed half a dozen senior citizens taking test drives
And told myself I don't want to be driving in a Grandma car
HOLD UP, I HAVE A VERY NICE CAMRY SE SPORT N IM NOT OLD...NICE , RELIABLE and Dependable Vehicle!
Was still goalie as far as the later 2000 years...Had an 07 Infinity (Nissan) G35 6spd manual for 11 years
Sold it last year only because I needed an suv to take my lil one around.
Never had a single issue. Extremely reliable. Miss driving it!
Scotty, you brought back a lot of memories on Datsun/Nissan. My mom owned a '78 Datsun B210 hatchback. It was a small, but very well made car. My mom really liked it. I drove that car around when I was a kid. I remember my grandfather telling me that the car would be in the junkyard in 5 years; it outlived him. I owned an '83 Nissan 720 Pick-up. It was a good truck, and I drove it for 15 years and learned how work on vehicles with that truck. The truck is long gone, but I still have the factory repair manual for it! Now for one better than the Maxima. My wife bought an '89 Nissan Sentra when it was about a year old from a rental car company. She was driving it when I first met her in '92. I have meticulously maintained the car over the last 23 years and she's still driving it. I've changed out some things, but the main things are all original. The car is still going strong. The problem I'm starting to have is that some parts aren't available anymore, things like the air flow sensor. I've offered to buy my wife a Mustang, a Camry, a Lexus, and she just says, "I love my little car." Our mechanic says that it's the best maintained Nissan in our state. It's been a great car, and it was Made in Japan in the glory days. Thanks for the great video and bringing back those great memories of Datsun and Nissan!
bought I 99 maxima with 60,000 on it a couple years ago. I love that car
Lucky, keep it clean. They like rust....
Hitachi ignition coils, keep em handy
I seen one with 341k miles. I was in disbelief. U talking about getting your monies worth 👍
Hey Scotty can you do a video about the first generation 4Runners? Keep up the great work Scotty I watch every episode.
Right away - A32 Maxima came to mind. My dad used to own a 99 Maxima SE, was an awesome little car....
In Central America, I saw nothing but 90’s Nissans. No wonder
Always i wanted to see an honest video about this car, and i see it today. It's my first video about this car. Very happy to hear that is a good car.
awesome video scotty. I've owned three of these maximas and they are the best. most people have no idea about these cars and how good they are.
3:30 this one had me bursting out laughing yo wtf they painted the wheel on it
Scotty sure knows how to sell a car!
I have a 1992 Toyota corolla sprinter with 4A-GE engine and manual transmission - still runs great .
I've got a 97 Maxima . It was an engine built to handle 500 hp detuned to 200 hp. There are guys on RUclips that have turbo charged them to 500+ hp and they hold up. The 99 was the last of that gen. 200 hp was actually pretty good for the years it was made. Very comparable to the upscale BMW 5 series for that time but way more reliable.
I see his check bounced.
i have a 2000 nissan maxima and i love it, 248,000 miles and still daily driving
Lexton Ravaee ive got a 2000 too with 190k miles. Only thing that has went wrong is the alternator. The OEM alternator when out at 189,000 miles! If that isn’t a testament to Japanese quality, I don’t know what is.
My 5th gen has 260,000 now.
2001 Nissan Maxima SE at 309k still rolling very nice
Mine is 2000 too...216,000 runs greattttt
White pearl..sporty..
01 Maxima SE Smooth At 143,000
The 99 Maxima is a perfect example of why I like the older cars. I have my mother's 98 Altima with 58,000 miles on it and it is absolutely dependable and rides well. I did have a 90 and 99 Maxima and after looking at new cars, I wish I still had them.
Scotty, thanks for all You do, I Learn a lot of cool car info.
I never thought I'd live to see the day when Scotty did a positive review for Nissan. Most impressive 💪
All Nissans in the 90's were great cars, as good as Toyota, Honda, Mazda.
@@victorblock3421 that is true however over the years some car companies have rapidly declined in terms of quality more than others and I think Nissan is one of them
I had one of these, got it up to 275,000 miles before I let it go. It still ran perfect when I sold it, just sold it to get something newer. It had great acceleration as well. If it was manual I probably would have kept it.
I had a '93 Maxima "4 Door Sports Car". The car just wouldn't die. Pretty much so traded it in on Penske Truck rental when I moved cross-country.
This came into the shop back in 1999, it had a manual, and it was getting a state inspection. That transmission and car were so smooth and refined.
I see those all the time, still on the road. Damn good cars, I wish Nissan would pull their heads out of their asses and get rid of Renault!
Steel Talon - they are - I’ve seen a few articles that suggest Nissan Japan is trying maneuver their relationship w Renault and revitalize their lineup and offerings
I still own one of these and I will never give it up. This car and the Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Vic all the Panther platform cars, better get one before they're all gone..

Scotty, I had a ‘96 with manual transmission. Loved it, till it was stolen. These days I drive a 2013 Infiniti G37, which you also gave a favorable review of. I will always love that Nissan 6 cylinder. I had it also in my ‘87 Hardbody Heavy Duty
The 2001-2002 R34s and S15s are still worthy of buying (in a few years when they're legal, LOL).
Scotty: "THE AC BLOWS ICE COLD".... as its set on heat XD
Scotty is spot on! My friend in college had one! This car was great back in the day!
Nissan Maxima are the best I ever had. I have a 1997 and has 354,000 mileage and just last month engine started linking. Transmission still good with BOSS speaker. Which it’s awesome. I have no complain ... for the mileage ... AMAZING! 👍🏼🚗
One of favorite cars I ever had was a 2002 Maxima (Made in Japan) with a six speed manual. That VQ35 engine was bullet proof! The only reason I had to get rid of it was because the body and frame was disintegrating from rust. I live up in Ottawa, ON, Canada so there's no shortage of salt on the roads during winter. Otherwise it was a great car and fun to drive.
What octane you put in it?

Yesss! I had a ‘97, and I’m sure I would still be driving it if it didn’t aggressively rust away! Right before I got rid of it, I took it to get struts replaced and the mechanic is told me he couldn’t do it because the entire undercarriage and wheel assembly was rusted out. I bought it with high mileage and got it to almost 300k miles. The motor was still whisper quiet and strong the day I took it to the junk yard. That car was the most comfortable and most enjoyable car I have ever driven!!! And it was fast!! Every time I see one on the road or in a parking lot somewhere, I wish I could have kept it!
Just by watching this video, I think I got my eyes on my first car 😌 this 1999 Nissan Maxima. Thanks for what you do Scotty!
2000-2001 still good. Same engine, even more perfected. Look for a 5 speed manual.
yzrider17 1983 thanks for the info! Will look into it 😌
Love your shows that you make Scotty Kilmer.
hello and thanks!
@@scottykilmerhi, could you talk about the hyundai xg 350 in one of your videos?
I have a 2004 Maxima QX. It's an A33 (despite being made in June 2004) with the VQ30DE engine. Currently has about 210tmls on the clock, but works without any issues. Only problem is a slight clunk from the right front corner, which may be due to a worn motor mount. Suspension itself is fine.
I have a 2001 Maxima GLE that’s needed basically zero service apart from routine maintenance in all of its 22 years. Apart from the headlight and taillight shape it’s identical to the 4th generation. Rusty but trusty, starts right up every time.
If Nissan gets rid of Renault, perhaps they will make good cars again. Had a nice big trunk for those late votes?
So fast there is no good comments to read while watching the video :-(
I had one of these and it was great!
I've had 3 of the 3rd gen maximas all performed incredibly and are fun to turbo...and vq30de's are one of the best built engines as well as one of thee most sought after engines ever!...but the '95-'96 weren't governed...and finally the ride was good!
I’m glad you finally covered this I’ve had 3 go past 500k with original motor and trans. 95-2002/2003
Ugh I miss the glory days of Nissan. Used to be one of my favorite car brands. These days you couldn't pay me to drive one of those piles of 💩💩
I own a 1995 Maxima, I just replaced the water pump, I’m so glad it’s still kicking and I really hope it makes it through college
Nice to see you Scotty on RUclips.
Samsung motors assembled sm520 series(sm518~sm525v) with parts of Nissan Maxima and sold them in South Korea from 1998 to 2001. Perhaps 2002 Renaut over taken Samsung motors
In my house there are two, 2001 sm525v and 2004 sm520v.
And 2001 sm525v is better than 2004 520v. Ther had been no problem with 2001 sm525v. But 2004 sm520v(by Renaut) had been repaired because of some electric parts and Its engine oil has been leaking a little since 2019.
But still I like them all.
If Nissan was so good in the 90s how come they were on the verge of bankruptcy that Renualt had to step in for a cash infusion ? Fiat and VW, with less quality always have cash to roll in to; their vehicles appeal to emotion. Having quality alone does not seem too profitable unless you are Toyota.
I had an 85 Sentra had a timing belt, then had an 89 Sentra had a timing chain. Sure liked the timing chain better, it didn't break.
Nissan was in so much debt before 2001, and they were building their cars with high quality parts..hence why they last so long. Because they were so close to being bankrupt Renault had to come in and lower production costs, hence quality of the vehicle went down to turn Nissan's profits around, they then started to make millions after Renault took over. Then Customers notice "I used to own a old Nissan and it lasted forever, but the new ones don't!?" Go figure...
@@Pokemonguy16RS Right. The moral of the story is that as much as we complain about quality ... it isn't actually profitable. I am from Europe and Fiats have always been bottom of the barrel rust buckets and yet they always have money somehow.
Daughter had a '99 Maxima for a good while. She had to have the muffler replaced twice (it's at the back of the car). She drove the wheels off of that car. She got married and wanted something bigger. Her Maxima was a good car. Loved that V-6 engine. Close relative of the Z-car engine, I understood.
Many cars have the muffler in a forward position under the car. They run hotter and are less prone to acidic condensation and last longer as a result. When mufflers are at the rear of the car they run cooler and are more prone to acidic condensation and will fail more often. Ask Scotty.
I love those old maximas especially manual trans...super tight, comfortable and fast.
Hey scotty, should i buy a 2009 honda accord coupe with the 4 cylinder engine? Its an automatic with 92k miles and its in really good shape. Thanks for the content and all of the advice you give!
