My Apple Watch sat about 25’ under for two weeks after cliff jumping. A diver found it and was able to call my dad from it after charging it. The water resistance is no joke

Don’t put alcohol on displays! It dissolves the glue under the display causing blobs and lines to appear. They may not be immediately noticeable but it affects some of the layers in the screen causing discoloured lines to appear when looking from different angles. Never bring alcohol near things you don’t want to chemically react like some types of plastics, glues or other stuff that easily dissolves. Never use alcohol near a screen. Just use a spudger or something else thin to cut through the glue and apply lifting force on small areas.
Does the gold / white-ish border on the screen mean permanent damage? Or is it some screen protector or something with dirty adhesive?
I am purely hypothesizing, but it's probably the glue between the screen glass and the OLED panel starting to die. if that's the case, it probably won't affect day to day use of the device much beyond the discoloration.

If I remember correctly from the original video (which is like 3-4 years old at this point (it's linked in the description)) the display works pretty much perfectly and it's just discoloration although it is probably technically permanent damage

Sounds like my key fob for my Jeep. Accidentally took it swimming in the lake last week and it got ruined. Had to get towed home. Managed to grab a new one on Amazon and swap the board over with a new battery connector and battery. After cleaning up the issues, it worked fine. Still replaced it just to be sure.
It never occurred to me that I would be stranded if my car key fob broke. I have new anxieties. 😂
You won't be. They have backups. In Toyota, you hold the fob against the start button and it works when dead.

I found a Garmin smartwatch this year when I was in the Maldives. This poor watch spent around 4 months in salt water between corals and I managed to just clean the battery charging connector and resurrect it. This is how I know when the last activity was logged on the watch. I'm not so sure how to find the previous owner though!

The original video is ancient, but you can get a fiberglass scratching pen to clean off electronic contacts. A scratcher has been the saving grace for me on multiple occasions

Instead of isopropyl alcohol you can buy tuner 500 to remove corrosion from parts. And if there is a lot of corrosion you can use contact spray used in cars. Thats a bit rougher though.

@JerryRigEverything for the most part the first generation Apple Watch was just splash resistant not fully water resistant. It wasn’t until the second generation of the Apple Watch, where I got waterproof.
That, and the first generation had some more luxurious options being made in real gold and rose gold, etc.

As a pedantic silly scientist I can’t help but say that one of your primary tools, isopropanol, or isopropyl alcohol is simply pronounced phonetically as iso pro pill alcohol. Where does someone even buy a 24K Gold Apple Watchcase? In the old days there would have been a skilled, hand-created message of love on such a device-but I’m guessing modern back-sensors don’t like being covered with superb calligraphy that might help watch and owner reunite.
