    I certainly appreciate your "bubbly" attitude. This video was very helpful as my family is telling me I need to get my hearing checked. 45 years working in industry at 100+ db will probably create hearing issues.

    • @DefiniteHearing
      @DefiniteHearing  Год назад

      Yes it will. Typically 8hours of prolonged noise exposure of 80+dB will do it too.

    Good explanation of the Audiogram. and glad to see how mine compares to someone else. I have a hearing loss that is profound, but did not really understand the definition. For me the lower frequencies are about the same as normal hearing, but starts dropping off in the middle of the speech range. I have had bilateral sensori neural loss since around birth, but did not get hearing aids until I was about 45 or so. That was when I first heard birds chirping outdoors!

      YES!! Hearing birds chirp is evidence that the hearing aids are working properly. I love hearing their little sounds; they're fascinating. I'm so grateful to hear this video and hearing aids help you!

    This video is very useful but because there's music playing over the words I'm having problems hearing it.

      I am so glad the video was helpful and that you pointed out the distracting music. I do the closed captions myself - turning those one will help with understanding and for future videos, I'll be sure to take care of the music. problem Thanks for letting me know. :)

    I'm still pretty young (18 yrs old) and my parents have always been in charge of my appointments, but I'm starting to take control of that for myself so learning what the audiogram actually means after 18 years of not knowing has been really interesting!! I am relatively the same as you, maybe a little worse. I drop off at about 2000 but like you, my left ear is stronger. Thanks for sharing!!!

      Hi! It is great to e-meet you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it helped you. Way to take charge and learn what an audiogram means! More power to you! Thank you so much for sharing about your loss. I think that it is so fun that we have matching strong left ears! :)

    Learning for myself. Had an audiogram 10 years ago and then yesterday. I’m 60 with severe loss in higher frequencies. Hearing aid time has come. But I may be able to get by for awhile with Apple Earbuds and iOS 14/15 - I’ll give it a try anyway, $100 vs $4000.

      Interesting! Hearing is a precious sense! Apple air pods will increase the volume all around, not just the frequencies your hearing loss needs. If you find your ears ache after wearing the airpods for a while, get a free 30 day trial of hearing aids from an audiologist. Costco has inexpensive hearing aids as well.

    Thanks for sharing! Would love to hear more about discriminatory calculations and how they are done. Also what typical audiograms may be for normal hearing x age groups

    • @DefiniteHearing
      @DefiniteHearing  4 года назад +1

      You're welcome! I like those video ideas! Just so you don't have to wait for a video, my discriminatory counts were calculated based on my accurate responses. For example, the audiologist would say a list of different words and I would repeat the words I heard. The number of correct words divided by the total number of words asked resulted in my discrimination percentage. Regarding the typical audiograms, -10 to 15 is considered normal for children and -10 to 25 dB is considered normal for adults (18+). I hope this helps!

    I've never been to an audiologist, but at least I know what to expect. I have an Auditory Processing Disorder,. which means I find it difficult to hear conversations in noisy environments, or I have trouble understanding certain accents or tones of voice.

      @DefiniteHearing  4 года назад

      Hi there! Yes, it is interesting how through that we can hear some voices better than others!

    • @oddfellowfloyd
      @oddfellowfloyd 3 года назад

      I read that, if you don't have a hearing loss along with your APD, hearing aids won't help (unnecessary amplification), though you can inquire about FM system devices that aren't hearing aids, but will help filter out noise and focus in on voices better. :)

    What is Severe hearing loss

  • @laurenteague3705
    @laurenteague3705 3 года назад +1

    I watched another video from an audiologist that stated not only do they look at your audio gram but also they mostly look at your word recognition scores to determine if you need hearing aids. I am pretty sure this is why I didn’t qualify for hearing aids. Even though my audio gram and acoustic reflex test showed that I have mild asymmetric sensory neural hearing loss, my word recognition scores were 100%. I don’t understand how that is possible, but Would love to know your thoughts on this? My family and I are getting increasingly frustrated because I have difficulty understanding conversations (especially with background noise) and I constantly need things repeated. Thanks!

    • @DefiniteHearing
      @DefiniteHearing  3 года назад

      Yes, those word comprehension tests are done in an isolated environment with no distraction. Plus, they use the same words every time so if you're like me and no the words, it is way easy to "pass" that "test". In my opinion, if an audiogram shows a loss, it should be aided despite comprehension scores. In my opinion, hearing standard of care is completely behind every other field of medicine. For example, with even the slightest vision loss, people use reading glasses. For the slightest pain, pain meds are prescribed. But for hearing losses, many are not bad enough. (Insert my eye roll.) Therefore, I highly recommend finding an audiologist that will listen to your concerns and help you find a pair of hearing aids that meet your needs. Sound is worth hearing and it is worth being involved in all conversations.

    Whoa. Amplifying for severe hearing loss? It's quite puzzling because if you were to amplify those noises, wouldn't it make your hearing worse, since chances are, they'll be amplified above 85 db? and why?

    • @DefiniteHearing
      @DefiniteHearing  2 года назад

      Definitely amplifying for a severe hearing loss. ESPECIALLY for babies in order to acquire speech. Depending on your hearing loss, amplifying will not make your hearing loss worse. Without amplifying you're just missing out on sound. For example, I have a moderate to severe hearing loss. It is like my ears are just locked at a lower volume threshold than yours are. Now if I wear hearing aids, I can hear what you can. My loss is not degenerative. Therefore, if I do lose my hearing overtime, it will just be due to normal human aging, not sound amplification by hearing devices.
      My ears aren't any different than yours in terms of "handling" the "severe, 85 dB+" volume and amplification. They just don't start hearing until that point.

    Why are you playing a background track when explaining hearing loss?

      Fun fact: I hired someone to edit this and couldn’t hear the music in the background. I’ve ensured no music is put in going forward (as much as I’m able to).
