@@3mp69 It is VERY different in the US, which is where Doug's perspective on this is coming from. Those cars simply are not seen here, basically ever, so yes it is indeed weird to see one in the wild. Here the Ford F150, Chevy Silverado, and various SUVs account for, at a guess, probably 85% of the entire (new) market. Another 12% or so will be your standard sedans, with the rest being the few coupes they still make, like the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette. I saw a Volvo wagon a couple of years ago, when I was car shopping. It was on a Volvo dealer's lot. I was honestly amazed, since the last time I'd seen one was back in the 90s. It's a really pretty car and I had to talk myself out of getting it, sadly, since it wasn't what I needed at the time. They're so rare here because there's simply too small a fan base for them, everyone wants a truck or standard SUV.
Ok Doug, you have an international audience. When you talk the market you mean the US auto market. Volvo station wagons are NOT weird in Europe. The US SUV's are not popular in Europe because of steep taxes (based on weight) and are sometimes difficult to navigate and park on European streets. So for Volvo, VW, etc. to have production lines for station wagons and sedans is not weird at all. They are just not aimed at the US market. Just spilling some of them to a few customers in the US may make sense to them.
Came to say the same thing. Wagon's are literally the opposite of dead in EU. Sedans and coupes are pretty rare out here while hatchbacks and wagons are everywhere. A lot I think does come from taxes and regulations. I for one don't even have the option to get a sedan or coupe as a company car, it must be a 5 door wagon/hatch/SUV and I think that's pretty common. That said, it's much more practical. Especially considering how many people cycle in Europe; I like being able to fit a bike or 2 easily in the car. Not possible in a coupe or 4-door.

As a 1995 Volvo 960 Estate owner (3ltr 24 valve straight six) I love the spiritual grandchild of my car but I sill think the last Rear Wheel Drive Volvo beats the newer Front/4 wheel drive versions. That said the S80 V8 AWD does appeal to my insane brain!

Except that nearly every iconic SUV started as a 2 door, and the 2 door versions are all much more desirable (and valuable) than the eventual 4 door. The OBS Chevy 2 door Blazers, the "O.J" Bronco's, 2 door Jeep Cherokee's ... just to name a few. The same goes for the "failed" Subaru Baja. You can buy a 2nd Gen outback for $1500 ... but a roached out Baja is still $7k. The "problem" with 2 door vehicles is that manufacturers got lazy, and they don't want to make 2 body styles ... so they default to 4 doors.
Well that's because the car market in America is very fickle. All it takes is for one company to put out a fleet of unpopular cars and the entire company goes under. So they only focus on the most popular segments to get the most money. That's why a lot of the subcompact cars are dying out and being replaced with boring crossovers. To us, these "normal" cars are weird because they're becoming increasingly rare, unfortunately.
I just bought the Outback Wilderness. It’s a car Subaru fans wanted. They’re already taking them off-road, lifting, installing beefy tires, etc. The car handles amazing, looks great, turns heads, and is insanely capable for going off the beaten path while keeping the wagon intact. I have no doubt the Wilderness editions will have solid resale value like every other Subaru special edition vehicle. Very very pleased.
How many people wish they could order any car they wanted, walk into a dealership and order a 1969 Firebird or a 1996 Impala or even a 1987 F150, 1978 Ram Charger, just whatever you want in any model year
I'm almost 100% positive that Doug does the editing himself since there has been next to no editing in any of his videos until just recently. It seems to me like he's learned some basics and enjoys it enough that this is just him learning and practicing before possibly using the skill to make some changes to the type of content he uploads to his channel. I agree that the editing in this one was definitely a bit too forced and cheesy. It's great that he's learning, and hopefully he learned something from the mistakes in this video, but hopefully in the future he'll have the foresight to realize that experimental changes/practice edits fit much better on the 'More Doug DeMuro' channel than they do here on the main channel.

@@afish8883 Yeah, but he lives in the US, and I'm willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of his viewers are American. Knowing who your 'customers' are is crucial to success, so it makes sense for him to take up the American perspective on a lot of these cars. Almost nothing can be considered 'weird' if you adjust your perspective on it to fit the audience it was created for. It's incredibly expensive to make and sell a car of any sort obviously, so even some of the truly weird examples (no matter where you may be from) were put into production because some kind of market research said it would be a viable product.
I think Doug must have realized that the videos on More Doug Demuro weren’t getting nearly as many views. Having two RUclips channels honestly makes no sense, especially when one is way more popular and gets way more views than the other one does.
@@yungboicontigo9278 No need for a second channel aside for sucking up more money. @@ROSCOLUX302 Yeah, that's my point exactly. Doug had to create a fake car to lure us in to convince us that actually weird cars still exist. He couldn't use a real car for the thumbnail because none of the cars he features are actually all that weird.
Yeah i think im done being a subscriber, his content has become clickbait nonsense. I'm just tired of it, i preferred his earlier videos with no nonsense editing and just going over the car features and quirks.
I can't say I agree with Doug's definition of weird. The V90 and Arteon especially. It's unusual to see them in the US because those body styles aren't as popular anymore, but they're literally just conventional cars. Off-trend does not a weird car make.
Ever since the GLA 45 came out, they were selling them at MSRP or charging markups (at least in CA). It's a grown-up hot hatch and it's quite fast. They don't make many of them in the first place so no inventory overstacking which means they don't have to really discount them to get them out of the showroom. And the older generation GLA 45 holds its value really well in its respective segment. So it's actually a desirable car but often overlooked.
@@yungboicontigo9278 Shooting Brake and Wagon are often different concepts. Shooting Brakes seem to be the supposed middle between the 4-door liftback sedans and wagons. Less wagon looking but with a big trunk opening. Compare Passat Variant (Wagon), Arteon Shooting Brake and normal Arteon (Liftback). For a comparison Liftback vs normal sedan, take a look at the Ford Mondeo.
You know, it occurred to me while watching this that the Avalon TRD doesn't make sense in the U.S (or even the euro market) but it absolutely makes sense for japan. In japan people put race wheels on kei trucks, bodykits on their crossovers, etc. I think we lose track of what car culture really is in japan because of how big the drift scene is, but if you go on google maps, you're way more likely to come across a lowered kei van with aftermarket wheels and a crazy racing bumpercover and rear spoiler, than you are a drift car. The Avalon TRD fits in nicely with that culture of "I want my car to be cool and personalized but I don't really care if it's fast, I'm not racing it". I'd be willing to bet money that that car was designed with solely japan in mind, and just happened to end up going to other markets too.
The OB Wilderness makes more sense when you look at the absolute explosion of aftermarket off-roading demand/supply for Subarus in the past 5-7 years. Still a hilarious full circle situation, no doubt. 😂
Lol, I owned a 2012 CC. It was actually a pretty decent car. I bought it with $32k miles for ~$10k about 4 years. I ended up taking it across country and it was great for that. It also definitely had some weird quirks, like the fact that it's only 4 seats with, even though it is a 4-door and has space for a middle seat.
The thing with this list is so many of these cars aren't here, are going away, or are unavailable. The i3, V90, and Avalon TRD have already been confirmed to be discontinued at the end of 2021. The Avalon itself will be killed after 2022. The right-hand-drive Wrangler is basically non-existent. The Mazda is not even on sale yet assuming it comes here. The Durango SRT Hellcat had a production run of 6 months which was spoken for almost immediately and is gone after 2021. That's 6 of the 11 cars.
@@Ivan-np3ls I meant in the US, I'm sure it'll still be on sale in Europe. After this year we'll only get the lifted V90 Cross Country. Regular V90's are extremely rare here. I think Volvo was only selling about 200-300 a year and you had to special order them.

I don't understand Doug's confusion or negativity about the Santa Cruz. It's basically a smaller Ridgeline. The Baja partially failed because the width of its bed was a limiting factor if I recall. The Santa Cruz can fit tall objects a small SUV can't, 4' wide materials a Baja can't, and can tow most reasonably sized recreational vehicles.
None of these cars were particularly weird, the Santa Cruz was the “weirdest” but it is just a small truck based on a crossover. What about the Veloster, they still make it, it is basically an Elantra GT but with 3 doors.
For me as a German it is absolutely absurd that the Arteon and the V90 Wagon are called weird. Over here they are pretty much as normal as it gets. Especially the V90 is just a Wagon. Everybody here wants a wagon so of course they sell like crazy over here. SUVs are still kind of considered to be unnecessary unless you want to go off-roading.
For me, as an American, it's absurd when Germans tweet me pictures of Mustangs they see and they get all excited. But then I remember that context matters and things that are unusual in some places aren't in others :)

The Santa Cruz is a segment for small-mid size pick ups. Here in Argentina they are quite famous, you have the Fiat Toro, Renault Oroch, the Maverick will come soon and so on. Basically mid size SUVs such as the Ranger are too expensive, so these are cheaper options for lifetime city oriented drivers. So, in our market, it's not that weird TBH
@@lucas8913 what downsides of a truck do you speak of? the main downside of a truck is poor fuel mileage, big, hard to park, etc. Many reviews have already stated the Santa Cruz drives like a Tucson with an open bed instead of an enclosed cargo area. I don't really see what is so weird about that.
Just purchased a Wrangler. Earlier in the summer when supplies were, the Wrangler pickings were VERY slim. However, in Mid July we found two dealers in the Chattanooga area that had Wranglers in stock. The hitch: they were right hand drive Wranglers. We passed.
After insulting us with click bait, Doug argues they still make weird cars today, then shows 11 cars that are not weird...certainly not Fiat Multipla weird anyway.
I get that you only chose weird cars from established brands, but I'd like to throw the XBUS into the ring. American Volvo V90 driver here. Though Volvo always maintained that the non-CC V90 was special order only, a Jalopnik article a few years back alerted me to the fact that there were in fact some V90s that were making it East Coast dealerships and sitting on lots. A found a few on Autotrader, bought a V90 T5 Inscription through my local dealership in the Midwest, and haven't looked back (except to marvel how good it looks when parked). I'm no hardcore Volvo wagon fanatic. I just wanted a special, beautiful car with presence, a fantastic interior, plenty of space, and efficiency that a SUV cannot match. Did I mention it's a beautiful car? This model looks long, low, and stunningly handsome without being jacked up an inch or two and the tacked-on plastic of the Cross Country. People that don't know what it is remark that it's a great-looking vehicle, and once a month, someone who knows EXACTLY what it is (a Doug Demuro subscriber maybe) will excitedly approach and ask how I got it. And... of course... Volvo recently announced they'd stop sending them to the USA. Makes my wagon rarer, but I'm sad others won't get to enjoy owning this model.
I think you hit on an important point here: cars aren't always born weird; often, they're made weird. Take the Durango Hellcat: 3-row SUVs, especially the Durango, are so common that you often don't notice them. The Hellcat engine, while absurd to some extent, makes a kind of sense: if you want to brag about horsepower in a car that costs under $100,000, or you actually intend to use it for racing (imagine! A Hellcat racing), it makes sense. Cross-pollinating engines (especially performance engines) makes sense: it allows you to get more out the engine and charge more for whatever vehicle you stick it in. All three of these things in some way are practical or otherwise make sense. _Combine_ them and suddenly you have a three-row SUV with a racing engine making 707 horsepower.
@@jadesoda5305 I can tell you're an angry Dodge stan. I never said that a Hellcat can't be used at the track or that it would be bad at a track, merely that the people who can afford them probably won't use them for that purpose.
Stellantis has expanded its global market. It’s not uncommon to see brand new RHD Wranglers in the Caribbean. If it’s no extra cost for Chrysler to build them, then it makes sense. Also they make them in the US anyway!
The Avalons and Camrys look great I reckon ..an AWD version with a bit more power would be an awesome car I reckon. Being an Aussie I'm a sucker for most fast/fastish done up sedans.

It's interesting because VW's cars in the US are actually.highly mainstream where as they exact same car models in Europe actually are quite luxurious. Look it up, vw trims down their Arteon and passat for the American market.
It's pretty much just the 86 twins, the Miata, Veloster, Civic Si, WRX, Mustang, and Camaro. Inflation adjusted, these kind of fit that mold. And offer more performance compared to those old cars.

A lot of the cars Doug think are strange, it's probably that they are strange in the US, elsewhere it is not so. The Defender for example, the 90 (two door) is a legend of many decades, so that think will sell like hot cakes outside of the US. The small Merc AMGs sell a lot as they finally enable more people to afford an AMG, and what you call previous version is the A not a GLA, it is damn popular here in South Africa.
Hey Doug, two little side notes that are may interesting to you: 1. Take a look on the Volkswagen T-Roc cabriolet (it's literally the thing in modern) and 2. Wagons aren't actually dead in europe. I think they have a big comeback in the last couple of years (and it's beautiful) :)
I daily drove a 1987 subaru brat for 7 years starting in *2009*, crossed the country with it 5 times round trip(NC to WA), 4 round trips from Washington to Alaska. Now I have a 2011 vw jetta sportwagen tdi, which feels like a luxury rocketship from outer space compared to the brat.
The shorter wheelbase Land Rovers from the very first Series I to the very last Defender 90 have always been two-doors. It's hard to claim that they were a failure.
Well this video (like most of Doug’s videos really) had its primary focus set on the US market. But the majority of the cars discussed actually do make a lot of sense in other markets such as Europe.
I’m Italian, and Italy it’s not just the country you would list for “TRUCK” sales but man, Hyundai Santa Cruze it’s fantastic! I love the mix between a rough off road vehicle and a FWD family car! It’s exactly what market needs nowadays expecially in countries not so popular with large V8 american pick-up! Which, by the way, are cool but way to large, way to expesive, way too much for Europe. Hyundai will sell this thing!
I work at a Hyundai dealer and we have already sold a bunch of them and we just got our first one in a week and a half ago definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but will be a big seller for people that want a truck styled vehicle but not the full truck features.
I think we should define weird car. Because none of these cars was weird. Because none of them was out of place. They are all versions of existing cars. Just changed a little bit and/or more horsepower (who doesn't want that). The older cars just poped out of nowhere with nothing before or after them in the lineup.
Yeah they're barely weird compared to a couple decades ago... But car design has matured and experience seeing the sales numbers has pushed some common sense into manufacturers
I personally like the idea of the TRD Camry and Avalon. They look awesome and having the option of a sporty version of these very reliable and practical family sedans is very cool in my eyes. I also wouldn't say they aren't any faster than their regular counterparts. They don't have any extra horse power but they have better tires, brakes, and a stiffer tuned suspension. Those extras add up to a better handling and more nimble vehicle. I also saw some videos here on RUclips where they lapped the XSE versions against the TRD versions, and the TRDs were indeed faster. Maybe I am just weird myself, but I think these TRD sedans are awesome and would totally buy one if I had the cash hahaha.
funny because I bought a loaded 21 Arteon about 3 weeks ago and I LOVE it, styling inside and out and that its uncommon to see a fastback sedan especially from VW.. I see people looking at it all the time because no one knows what it is since they don't sell and VW oddly doesn't market it

I know a GLA250 owner. He lives in an old city neighborhood in a city where parking is very limited and the road conditions are quite poor. The subcompact crossover allows for better suspension, better headroom, better ground clearance and greater luxury than other compact cars while better accommodating city street parking than an SUV. It’s a niche, but cars like the Mazda in this video and the GLA250 the are what he prefers. Likely would not pay $60k+ for one though.

Defenders were sold as 2 doors for decades, I fail to see that as a failure.
I bought a Chevy tracker as a 2nd car because I wanted a 2 door SUV

@@tedschmitt178 But Doug didn't title the video "11 weirdest cars on sale in America" did he?
Well that's because the car market in America is very fickle. All it takes is for one company to put out a fleet of unpopular cars and the entire company goes under. So they only focus on the most popular segments to get the most money. That's why a lot of the subcompact cars are dying out and being replaced with boring crossovers. To us, these "normal" cars are weird because they're becoming increasingly rare, unfortunately.

Hey Doug, two little side notes that are may interesting to you:
1. Take a look on the Volkswagen T-Roc cabriolet (it's literally the thing in modern) and
2. Wagons aren't actually dead in europe. I think they have a big comeback in the last couple of years (and it's beautiful) :)
Can only agree on the wagon thing! Imo they are one of the most beautiful types of body styles!
the troc cabro isnt sold in the states, which is sad
Kudos to the editing, "Durango Doug" and Noodle popping up in the truck bed had me laughing!
Doug's so enthusiastic about everything.
yeah that's what makes him fun to watch
you got the title wrong
"Here Are the 11 Quirkiest New Cars on Sale Today!"
there you go
I see the Arteon regurarly in Germany and honestly, I think it's hot af. The only coupe/sedan I'd ever get since I'm more of a wagon type.
The shorter wheelbase Land Rovers from the very first Series I to the very last Defender 90 have always been two-doors. It's hard to claim that they were a failure.
As a defender 90 owner, I second this. I don’t have a family yet (only 25) and just think it looks cooler.
The first Range Rover was also two door. Does Noodle (Doug's dog) need a choice of three doors to get into the back ?
He knows better than you.
Instead of cooking dinner for his kids Doug tells them to check out Cars and Bids
2 years later and I actually see a lot of the Santa Cruz’ around
Well this video (like most of Doug’s videos really) had its primary focus set on the US market. But the majority of the cars discussed actually do make a lot of sense in other markets such as Europe.
I'm not sure he cares about other markets. Most americans don't
Who the hell doesn’t know what cars and bids is at this point Doug. Like enough already 😂😂😂
It’s that or we get outside sponsors. More of a baller move for him to sponsor all of his videos by plugging his other business.
Weird cars in the past: odd design, odd interior, differently misplaced instruments, unusual utility, unusual style, extremely ugly.
Weird cars now: lol big grill, wow big engine, um... luxurious wanna be car..., um... higher than average ground clearence.
I agree with you, I'm also from Europe and would love a car like this
Doug: ALL 2-door suv's failed. Ever.
Suzuki Samurai/Jimny: Am I a joke to you?
...while highlighting a 2 door SUV in his Cars and Bids promo.
I think they are still making Lada Niva somewhere in Russia ...
@@RudeCorona my bad, how could I forget the Niva. It's cool!
Yeah, Suzuki’s are really popular here in Brazil, great off-roaders for the price
@@animes2k I am sure there are other succesful 2 door suv's I am forgetting right now. The original Range Rover comes to mind lol
6:44 what about the Suzuki jimny 🤔 and vitara
lada niva 4×4

Perhaps they're like what the Toyota Veilfire is to the Alphard luxury minivan?
funny because I bought a loaded 21 Arteon about 3 weeks ago and I LOVE it, styling inside and out and that its uncommon to see a fastback sedan especially from VW.. I see people looking at it all the time because no one knows what it is since they don't sell and VW oddly doesn't market it
Doug should do a list of rare cars that you wouldn’t think are rare. I am not saying cars like the Koenigsegg CCXR, rather sort of regular looking cars that are made by regular companies. Like the Chevy HHR SS Panel.
Or the Mini Clubvan
I’m from South Africa and Land Rover is one of the most popular suvs around here.. the older 2 door landies, even 2 door pajeros are very sought after here and every mom that can afford one wants one😂 to be completely honest most of the new land rovers ive seen around my area are 2 doors, the mom’s love them
The moms must hate their children 🤪
I know a GLA250 owner. He lives in an old city neighborhood in a city where parking is very limited and the road conditions are quite poor. The subcompact crossover allows for better suspension, better headroom, better ground clearance and greater luxury than other compact cars while better accommodating city street parking than an SUV. It’s a niche, but cars like the Mazda in this video and the GLA250 the are what he prefers. Likely would not pay $60k+ for one though.
A rare back to back filming or Doug didn't change his shirt.
Uai das ior mam laiks diks sou mach ?
