I think another reason why the art community is so toxic is a majority of the audience is children/teens, and that age group has no idea what the difference between *harassment* and *accountability* is. A lot of the time, these kids/teens will harass creators when they do/say something wrong and if they're called out on the harassment they say something like _"I'm just holding them accountable!!!"_

One of my biggest issues in the art community is generally people who self deprecate themselves in order to compliment you and expect praise in return after their self deprecating behavior. Then if you don't answer of block them, you're apparently an egotistical jerk when in actuality you have boundaries and don't appreciate peoples deprecative behaviors? And people get up all in their feels over this or make you feel bad for drawing,,, then project their insecurities of their own art onto you and expect you to comfort them...

I definitely get a little guilty pleasure in some drama channels but the repeat videos of "problematic people" is getting old. It's not fixing the issue and its not changing their behavior. The saddest part about the toxic nature of the art community is that "big creates" (people who have a large influence.) Almost never talk about this stuff, and are usually are the ones stirring up the drama. And on the rare occasion that they do talk about it they just don't change, or don't try to fix the situation.

Fantastic discussion. I call this phenomena "purity culture", we as the viewing internet audience assign a pedestal to others and enforce that viewpoint as part of purity. When they do anything "problematic", especially minor, we get to assign ourselves the higher ground and talk down to them. It doesn't benefit anyone, and it's really problematic beyond the ridiculous way the internet runs-- it leads to adopting these polarized views on certain nuanced topics, sometimes leading us to extremist beliefs that genuinely are more hurtful (like segregating colleges by skin color again), oftentimes denying all people the ability to admit to a mistake and be forgiven for it. Why should anyone admit to making a mistake in 2022 when you know you're going to be clowned on by strangers? Canceled anyway for making a mistake? No, it leads to a full purity mindset. You can't just post your earnest opinions in your space, because your entire identity might be boiled down to a bad take and diminish all of the good you've ever done. A great example is I was canceled for saying Pokemon's Leon in SwSh doesn't demonstrate good care of his little brother, who is another character of color, which either makes him a malicious figure or an ignorant one to his family's struggle. Because of this claim that I was racist somehow for criticizing a fictional character of color, I lost my platform which I was actively using the sales for BLM donations to George Floyd's family.

As I'm listening to this, I have the dumbest grin on my face, because all the points I've been saying to my friends, peers, etc online- you hit all of them. Cancel Culture is honestly one of the many things that scare me in this day and age, ESPECIALLY when it comes to the art community. I purposefully avoid looking at art memes, speedpaints, and other channels like this because some of the talks are extremely repetitive, and only cover one side. That's why when I see topics like this come from youtubers who took time to do their research, look at all the sides, and come to a conclusion that I leave the video feeling content and informed. Aka, that is you :3
Btw, lovely genshin art. I kept staring at the lineart feverishly and wondering how the hell have I missed you as a talented human being. Tis illegal. Thou deserves more recognition. it sucks to have to think on what you should and should not draw or include in your art piece, because you are worried on getting criticized based on the color of the character, or the eyes, or maybe even the size of the nose. in my opinion, if the art is appropriate then there's nothing wrong with it. 💕

The toxicity of the art community never fails to scare me away from participating in any community project.
If there is one person that decided to hate your guts they will do their best to spread misinformation about you and be sure you can not set foot in any project at all. The best part is; I never got the chance to talk about this because their reaction was to instantly ban me from any media.
Me talking about this issue (without any names involved) in a sarcastic way on my profile as in "oh so it's ok to treat people like that, cool thanks." is apparently toxic and another reason for me to be canceled ... yeah nice.
This all is just so surreal to me and I kinda wanna laugh and cry at the same time, because at one side it is good that group did not let me in because there is something seriously wrong with their ways and it's better not be part of that, but on the other hand it hurts being silenced and targeted by accusation without ever the chance to explain or talk for oneself in this matter.
And I am sorry to put that in your comment section, but this happened just recently and takes up my mind and I need to get this off my chest, I guess.

I take guilty pleasure in watching the drama unfold in the sense that I love watching this cesspool of a community crash and burn again and again without really commenting on it or really becoming emotionally involved. Why should I care when its members have repeatedly proven themselves to be ignorant, childish, and malicious? Why should I care when the drama channels that comment on it are only out there to sensationalize it and to push narratives for profit? It's disgusting. So disgusting and stupid and petty that it's amusing. It's incredible how many people seemingly lack the ability to think for themselves.

I remember feeling so confused when people were attacking Hopeless Peaches, and I was even more confused to see people immediately turn on their heels and support her again. So many people online refuse to think for themselves when situation like that pop up. If a creator did something bad (like accidentally insult someone) and they were legitimately sorry about their actions and want to change for the better, they are immediately shot down and the people refuse to forgive them, despite the fact that the creator is trying to change for the better. All this toxicity and cancel culture is just causing people to not be able to grow as people and learn from their mistakes and instead, puts in this harmful notion that everyone should be perfect, despite the fact that nobody is perfect.

Believe it or not but people have accused me of being a ‘MAP’ because I shipped two ADULT FICTIONAL characters who one of which is a demon and another is a human. And so because of the age gap between them, they started to call me a MAP. But the thing that’s funny about this is, not only am I a child, or was at the time of shipping these two characters, but the fact they called me a MAP for shipping two characters just because of a completely legal age gap. So by their own logic, the people who created Twighlight are MAPS because Edward is a hundred year old Vampire and Bella is a human being.

(Sorry, I don't trust myselfe to spell her name right >.< I'm not even sure if I heard it right!) And the reason I disagree with, is that twitter exists and that both asian and european artists abd cosplayers have been bashed and witch hunted for doing similar things as well. For example drawing disney princesses with switched clothes/roles, or cosplaying characters that are dark skined, or, in rare ocations mainly regarding asian cosplayers in this specific example, cosplaying characters with lighter skin. Mainly by beeing called racist and the other usual harassment.
It feels like an over all sickness spreading around, not stopping at anyone. People just somehow really love destroying people for portraying themselfes/creating crossovers or similar things of stuff that makes them happy. They just use different methods to attack different people.

I wonder if it's in part because the internet itself is rather young. Online communication has evolved a lot and is a fairly recent in its place in the world, so it would make sense that it's still catching up with its social rules and expected behavior. Not that it's in any way excusable for people to do these kinds of things, but it is interesting to think about

    This needs to stop
Imagine being an artist as a kid and drawing p*dophelia but then years later as you are an adult and knowing that is wrong you appologize for the drawing. But some angry kids call you a "p*dophile" for drawing that kind of stuff with ocs. This is an example from TheGreatRouge drama that still bothers me till this day and i hate it when people say my oppinion on this drama is "valid" when it's just an oppinion.
Most youtubers/artists who are called out of p*dophelia are men and adult woman where some people have screenshots of a person doing p*dophelia. Calling an artist a "p*do" for drawing it instead of doing it feels wrong. And i was cancelled over "names" i never used on amino.

yeah uh ppl calling her a hypocrite don’t know what it means… she’s allowed to have a moral base and can be against certain things as long she isn’t toxic about it. If she was toxic then yea hypocrite, but having a opinion on a matter isn’t hypocritical. Someone can dislike/critique things, get over it.
and if anyone wants to argue me on that, just don’t. I personally don’t care, nor is my mind going to change. It’s better off if we mind our business, than cause a petty war.

You say this is a “past few months” thing, but this kind of toxicity in the art community has existed for as long as I’ve been on the internet (1997-98, I think, not counting local BBS and things like that).
Anyway, my point is that this is not new. It might be new to you, but it has been going on for decades. Since as long as people have been sharing their artwork online in any sort of public view. I know people who have been harassed, defamed, ”cancelled”, and ultimately took all their stuff offline. I even know of someone who threw their portfolio away and has never picked up a pen since - and they were an amazing artist.
And, actually, you can certainly hear about it from before the internet as well; but we’re talking about the internet, which has definitely enabled a much more widespread and public view of it.
It is really sad and detestable how mean people can and will be. How people will gang up on someone. How people just want to hurt other people.
As for the exact issue you mention about a POC drawing herself as an anime character, I have heard of that and still don’t get the issue. There are literally black anime characters (rare, but still). Anyway, my heart goes out to that person and anyone else it has or is happening to. I’m so sorry.

I was "cancelled" in 2020 For saying a word i just learnt existed and didnt know was bad , And it caused me to be burnt at a stake practicly by an army of 9 year olds lead by People who have petty
revenge plots against me for little arguements or stupid things that would and have happened years and years ago when me and those people where younger
And they used this to lie about me being some big monster. And for the whole year i was misgendered and deadnamed by all of them, even having my meltdowns from my autisum used against me by them knowing what triggers/makes them go on , I struggle to calm down whenever i have them and im not even sure why but thats not the point. They basicly made me lose every single person i loved And constantly goated and clowned me every time i spoke or posted anything even if it didnt relate to anything they where saying. And they would pin people i loved and cared about against me and lied to them about me constantly, Spreading things like "She`s transphobic, homophobic, everything phobic etc etc!!"" Something along the lines of that. And i`m a ftm aswel as homosexual. so this makes absolutely no sense to me how they thought that made any sense, I`m not fully saying what happened becuase its really graphic and nasty and i dont think anyone wants to hear much about a 13 year old being harrased into a attempt to end therselves by a group of confused children being lead by a 17 year old sadist who wanted nothing but to see me lose everything i loved just becuase I said one word that i barely knew much about at the time. And even when i`d do something wrong or say something genuinly wrong. It wasnt the type of things they where trying to say i was doing or that i had done, They where worse then me with what they had been doing. I`ll sugar coat it here because i dont want anyone to feel more uncomfortable if it already is making them.
They would call Me names/label me constantly . most commonly "Toxic" "clown" even some despite their preaching about how slurs are horrible calling me the R word .
They also would intentionally and i mean INTENTIONALLY Cause me to panic and scream at them because i had no idea what to do sense it was always 50 vs 1
They would use it as black mail and publicly put me on blast on their blogs for the stupidest of things . aswel as much. much more things they`ve said.
as someone that had to deal with that side of cancel culture, I can just say. Jesus christ i hope this dies down eventually because now that this is So frequant it could happen to anyone.
Even someone whos preteen or even younger at this point in time from what i know. They`re very very vicious when it comes to chosing who to tear apart (cancel culture wise ) Its good when its actual bad people, But the problem obviously comes when its a literal child/minor infact just ANYONE easily affected by these kinds of things
They dont stop even when you beg them to or do ANYTHING to make it clear you want them too
They dont stop when you appologise for what you havent even done, and they proceed to pick apart your appology And lie about it being made up looking for any reason to call it a bluff.
I`M really sorry if this is messy But talking about this makes me nervous so i end up scrambling around but
The damadge from cancel culture Is extremely horrific depending on who severe it was of an experience and for me ive been left with paralizing fear anytime im put into A situation simaler to it or any conflict in fact. I cant imagine how horrible the trauma/ptsd people have after they`ve been attacked by not just hundreds or tens like me, BUT THOUSANDS , MILLIONS depending on there popularity. in a community i used to mostly be in a 14 year old was cancelled because their style was simaler to another person in the community, yes. THEIR ART STYLE. and they where attacked by thousands maybe even millions of people. I think things have died down with that sort of part of the issue but i can only hope sense i havent checked in a whilleee..

I’m an artist who is starting to be more and more popular in the Omori fandom and that genuinely makes me feel a bit scared, because i perfectly know what kind of shit happens when you are popular, people start seeing you as a perfect god/goddess who wouldn’t do anything wrong instead of a human being that makes mistakes and will go extremely wild if you make a really little mistake. Every human has their own flaws and shouldn’t be expected to be perfect. Ofc, everyone makes mistakes but that’s just a part of life and we all learn from those mistakes.

Anime characters come in all body shapes, sizes, and skin tones. It makes no sense to say a Black woman should not make herself into an anime character when Black people already exist in anime, i.e., Machiko from Machiko and Hatchin, Mohammad Ali Jr and Oliver from Baki, Canary from Hunter x Hunter.

       @RadioactiveVikings oh, absolutely - conflict is impossible to avoid in any environment where large numbers of people interact, but things are definitely getting worse as of late. it's just so frustrating because there's really no right answer - even if commentators are trying to just make things better and respectfully, constructively comment, they're still risking just making matters worse by dragging it out. i'm in the same boat myself - i want to talk about these things, but it's so difficult to do so without unintentionally making matters worse ;; @RadioactiveVikings oh, absolutely - conflict is impossible to avoid in any environment where large numbers of people interact, but things are definitely getting worse as of late. it's just so frustrating because there's really no right answer - even if commentators are trying to just make things better and respectfully, constructively comment, they're still risking just making matters worse by dragging it out. i'm in the same boat myself - i want to talk about these things, but it's so difficult to do so without unintentionally making matters worse ;;

@@DuchessCelestia I feel like its gotten very bad. I know a lot of stuff came out because of CS but there were so many artists that got dragged through the mud for absolutely no reason. I strongly believe a hopless peaches is "retired" fully because of videos that weaponized her mental health against her. And im sorry but i know there are a lot of fans of Omnia, but i feel she is slowly becoming problematic and is also one of the folks who truly milked HP's sitaution and used speculation over fact causing many to go against HPs. And then there was never really an apology. And i know this is probably considered an unpopular opinion but i just really don't appreciate art commentary videos especially ones that go after other artists.
