"Chase me" was their debut, released on January 13th (a Friday), 2017. It must have been nerve-wrecking for the members, re-debuting with a genre that is not popular in Korea after Minx failed. (5 of them were Minx before.) But they already doubled their sales with this. And they stuck with the Rock/Metal vibe until today, now selling 50 times the albums than Minx did.
This is the start of the Nightmare arc, which spans 6 MVs and 1 Japanese release. They are Nightmares here, and the Nightmare hunter is trying to dispel them - how that turns out is shown in the next one, Good Night.
Good Night is one of their heavier releases, and I love it. The K-Rock girl group Rolling Quartz also did an excellent cover of it. I personally think they built the forest in a studio, it does not look completely real to me, but I could be wrong. The Nightmare hunter casts spells to trap the members, but they get the book from him and turn it against him, trapping him behind the mirror.
The next song in the Nightmare arc, "Fly High", is from the album "Prequel", which is a strong hint to consider. 😉 That is also a very interesting song.
"Fly High" is probably the poppiest of the Nightmare arc. It was not done by their usual production team as well. But it makes sense, since this is a prequel, so bringing in a bit of the Minx sound makes sense to me. There are really heavy parts in it as well, which clearly state that they are not Minx anymore. And I love the dark parts thrown in, they really make the song special. The light part sung by SuA after the metal break is in major, while the rest of the song is in minor. That is why it stands out so much. They did the same in Good Night, but a lot shorter.
About the MV: You can see Yoohyeon burning the spider, which brought the curse of the spider queen down on the members. You will see the spider queen again in You and I. In Native American mythology, spiders are considered protectors, that is why a Dreamcatcher resembles a spider's net. That is a brilliant connection to their name! 😊
In "You and I" you can see the spider queen coming for Yoohyeon. She is the old woman that is being photographed - only to rob Yoohyeon's spirit. Also, earlier we see Dongie being pinned to the wall by needles, what is usually done to insects. For me, Yoohyeon's spirit is being pulled out here and thrown into the white dimension, which we will see again in Piri. The spider queen takes over her body, which is why we see JiU grab her neck in the end.
If you ask me, I believe "You and I" is a direct follow-up to "Fly High". For me, the story continues here through to Piri, and Chase me would then follow Piri chronologically.
I highly recommend to check out the dance practice as well, because Dami does something very special that didn't make it into the MV.
"What" is still in my top 3 favorite title tracks. It's heavy for a Korean release and I love the syncopation in the second half of the chorus. Story-wise this is the first time they wear non-uniform outfits, which I believe is because they lost Yoohyeon (or at least her spirit) and are kind of broken. You can also see them search for her alone, not as a group. For me this is a song about the loss of a loved one and what that does to a group or family. I might be reaching, but this is the meaning for me.
"Piri" is the last part of the Nightmare Arc (their Japanese release "Breaking out" can be seen as an alternative ending). In "What", the girls have been searching for Yoohyeon, and here they find each other again, but in the end they are all stuck in the white dimension. A Piri is a Korean flute that was used historically to signal danger, and that is what Yoohyeon does here when the members arrive. She is the one capturing them one by one, to rescue them and bring them to safety. They are together in the end, but still stuck. Dreamcatcher don't do happy endings. 😉

You did a really good job of interpreting the MVs actually! You put together a lot of stuff in the first three that most reactors I’ve seen don’t pick up on the first time around. The second half of the series definitely gets more abstract and up to interpretation though, so it’s not surprising you were a little lost. I’ll put a little summary of all six below.
Chase Me: The girls each embody different Nightmares who haunt this hotel, and the man is a Nightmare Hunter who is looking for them. He eventually finds their photograph, which according to some legends kind of contains a picture of their souls and is connected to them, and their spell book.
Good Night: The girls are essentially split into two beings-there’s their “evil” selves who are possessed by the Nightmares and act according to them, and their “good” selves which are trapped in the spell book and being tortured by those same Nightmares. The girls manage to get the spellbook back, trap the Nightmare Hunter, and burn the pages of the book to become whole again and leave the hotel. Dami drops the spellbook in the woods so that others won’t find it.
Fly High: As you guessed, this is a prequel showing how they became Nightmares in the first place. The girls were originally witches living together in this mansion, until one day Sua and Siyeon found the spellbook in the woods and became trapped by it. Next was Yoohyeon, who tried to run away one she saw what was happening, but once she left the protection of the mansion she became possessed as well. With the spellbook’s power growing stronger, she was able to return to the mansion and kill the spider that protected them-as spiders are the ones who weave dreamcatchers and protected their dreams. The spellbook is hidden in the mansion for Dami to find, and she, Gahyeon, and Handong all fall to the curse. Jiu, the last one left, encounters a physical manifestation of her Nightmare self who has come to capture her as well, but before this happens she’s able to seal the mansion’s gate so none of the Nightmare girls can leave.
You and I: A bit of a time skip here. We’re back to the present where the girls are living in a new era after freeing themselves from the Nightmare Curse. They’re still witches and seem to run a photography studio, using people’s photographs to cast spells on them. All is well until the Spider Queen comes to take revenge on Yoohyeon for killing the spider in Fly High, trapping her in the dream realm. The rest of the girls attempt rituals to find her and save her, but she fails to reach the portal in time. Also Sua may or may not be complicit in the Spider Queen’s revenge and other things, as we see her in the same room as Yoohyeon and the Spider Queen, and it’s her who originally finds the spellbook.
What: More time has passed and the girls are now living in the present day. They’ve been unable to free Yoohyeon but sometimes encounter her reaching out to them in their dreams.
Piri: Yoohyeon finally finds a way to call the other girls into the dream realm, but they end up separated and must wander through the maze of nightmares to find each other. The hand that snatches them is actually Yoohyeon, bringing them back to the safe realm of her white room. They’re still not free, but finally all together.

Yeah i definitely would not be able to catch all that the first time😂. This definitely helps me understand the nightmare series more. Its crazy how there's so much more then just the music in their mvs and that the lore is so deep.
I definitely need to watch a video explaining all the storylines

Their MVs can definitely feel overwhelming, and the imagery is often very vague on purpose, I think. I've seen some people who can watch the MVs and interpret them fairly well on the first listen but I'm definitely not one of them.
Piri was my first DC song. I heard it while driving home from work one day in 2019 and I immediately loved it. When I got to a red light I grabbed my phone and 'liked' it, then promptly forgot about it. I rediscovered Dreamcatcher with their Scream MV in late 2020/early 2021 and was immediately hooked. I've been following them since.
You have a few other MVs that you've not reacted to, btw.
Breaking Out - Alternative ending to the Nightmare Series and their first Japanese title track
R.o.S.E. Blue - Collaboration with Girl Cafe Gun mobile game
Endless Night - Japanese Release, one of their heaviest songs.
Eclipse - Collaboration with the Kings Raid mobile game for their anime.
Reason - This is their 6th anniversary fan song and the MV is part retrospective and partly animated.
Looking forward to what you have next.

You got Chase me and Good Night pretty figured out, they haunted the guy then trapped him inside while they got out. You're right that Fly High is a prequel showing how they became ghosts. They got cursed by the spider JiU caught which was apparently a spirit - that's why it gets creepier as it goes on - and then Yoohyeon killed it and they got forever trapped (until Good Night)
I might have some of that wrong, but I think that's the juste of it. Not completely sure how the rest of the nightmare series connects to that main trilogy. You and I looks like it could still be a prequel set after Fly high since the Spider Spirit looked like it was haunting them, maybe it's them breaking bad before haunting others? Someone will probably explain those ones as well, or video if you watch one

The way Dami rap which you call 'not really rap but it's rap', yeah it's called melodic rap. It's go well with the song beat this way and doesn't feel "off tune". Moonbyul from Mamamoo is truly master this type of rapping ( that's understandable since Mamamoo is the strongest group vocal-wise😅). I find Dami and Moonbyul really similar. Both participate in vocal line, both have lower tone compare to other rappers. The fact that Moonbyul is Mamamoo main rapper but also has vocal support and can sing seriously is phenomenal. I dont know if Dami want to focus more on her vocal, I think she want to lean more on music production. I love her no matter what

How to tell the members apart. ...
Dami and Gahyeon have very distinctive looks. No problems here.
Sua and Siyeon look alike. Pro-tip : SuA has a higher nose bridge.
JiU and Yoohyeon sometimes look alike. I don't have this problem, and I have no suggestions...
Yoohyeon and Handong look alike. Yoohyeon's face is a little smaller and with a more 'V'-shaped chin. Handong face is more oval. Yoohyeon is skinnier : she has a fashion model's body, while Handong has more of an athlete's body.

Hear hear.. Dreamcatcher is the best bro. The story, the lyric, the meaning, the music, the melody, the vocals, all put together in the best way possible. I am not putting down any other groups but i haven't seen any group do what they do, tbh. I love few other groups but man, Dreamcatcher just placed different in my heart.
There is a video explaining the arc. Of course its just a theory among theories. But the gist of the story is, Fly High is the start of the story, they were cursed by the Spider Queen. So they became Nightmares trapped in that mansion. So in Chase Me, the guy hunting them wanted to catch them and manipulate them to his desire. But Good Night was showing he was actually tricked by them and they got out and he was trapped inside the mirror world.
So in You and I, Yoohyeon was trapped in a portal cursed by the Spider Queen (she was the one who specifically unalived the spider), so the members tried to save her but instead being hunted by their own nightmares. The story continues in What, where they were put in different places but their intention was to free Yoohyeon from the curse. Piri was the end of the nightmares where they all got caught and became forever Nightmare.
So Breaking Out (Japanese release, alternative ending to Nightmare series) is the other story where they overcame the curse, reunited and became free.

I think Dami's raps or parts that aren't even raps but aren't quite singing sometimes serve different purposes. The part that wasn't a rap that you mentioned in "Fly High" that didn't rhyme, her rap in "What" and in "R.o.S.e Blue" are almost narrative. Especially "R.o.S.e Blue" but I won't explain because it's a story in itself I don't want to spoil lol

I also recommend the explanation video ruclips.net/video/F8I150_tRRI/видео.html but indeed there are some parts that are up for personal interpretation. But it is needed as only from the 6 M/Vs some parts cannot be guessed as those are only known from external resources. Also Dreamcatcher Lyrics help a lot in understanding BUT they are super confusing at first as many cases they have double meanings and poetic so hard to translate. But as have said, the visual references of BEcause took me 10+ watches and an external guide so it is normal for them.
Another comment is that Piri has an extremely complex and "weird" production at first (it has plenty of experimental parts almost a bit too many layers and textures and hard switches) but it has a huge growth value. For most people it needs 5-10 listens before it climbs to its rightful position, so make sure not to exclude it just yet and give it a few more listen as it needs it.

For me it was the contrary, I loved PIRI the first time I listened, because it was one of the first Dreamcatcher songs I encountered, but now is my least favorite title track (although I still like it), and I think the pililili part is too cringe for some people 😅

  • @deen4305

Not your fault with the faces. For instance Jiu and Yoohyeon, and SuA and Siyeon looked nothing alike in minx. The company deliberately styled SuA and Siyeon the same way in nightmare series to give them the creepy twins vibe since they had similar features, they then started pushing JiU and Yoohyeon as the main characters once they became the most popular members and started styling them similarly to push them as narrative foils (this also pushed everyone else into the background, eg Gahyeon and Handong have barely a few seconds of screen time in deja vu). After "what" they started styling the girls in clothes and makeup that reflected their personality instead of using uniforms. Only Deja vu and BEcause have identical uniforms because deja vu has clothing as part of the choreo and BEcause has the identical doppelganger- creepy doll theme.
Yoohyeon and Handong are the only ones who actually do look alike to the point even their own mothers were confused and BEcause had them as each other's doppelganger and the styling reflected that.
    tips for older videos-
Siyeon is tall and has a rounder big face, SuA is small and has a small and extremely pointy nose and chin.
JiU has a flattened nose and wide lips, Yoohyeon has a round nose and a small narrow mouth on a long face with bigger eyes, Handong has a sharper nose and the biggest eyes.
other than that gahyeon has big fox eyes and a cat smile that curls at the corners and Dami is basically this : ] when she smiles.

The album titles or each title track help contextualize what you're watching. I think you spend a bit too much time exclaiming how you don't know what's going on, when you could be putting the attention on actually seeing what is happening. It's also fine to just not worry about it at all and just take things in. Regarding getting familiar with faces, I agree that the personality and behind the scenes video content is better suited for that, especially since their styling changes from one MV to the next.
Oh and Maison still isn't Manson.

I think the explanation video you ment is thhis one (ruclips.net/video/F8I150_tRRI/видео.htmlsi=DXdwXU5VaLQ9Ctzs). It is really hepful explanation video but for me, full moon part could be excluded. Also, there is no offical sotry line to the nightmare series cuz there were no confirmation about the story line from both girls and the company. Lastly, check out the Breaking out MV since it is an "alternative ending" to the nightmare series.
