  • Deanna Tikhonov WHNP-BC gives an overview on IUDs, or intrauterine devices in this video. If you are considering getting an IUD, this episode is a great tool to help you decide if this method would be right for you!
In this video I discuss the different kinds of IUDs out there which include a non-hormonal IUD and hormonal IUDs that have progestin within them. UPDATE: The FDA has approved one of the hormonal IUDs for 6 years, so now there are options for a 3 year, 5 year and 6 year hormonal IUD in the U.S (my video references 3-5 years).
I review how each IUD can effect your periods a bit differently and how effective the IUDs are at preventing pregnancy. I also discuss what the procedure is like for insertion and the risks associated with insertion.

Thank you for the informative birth control methods! I've been debating between the iud and the patches for the past couple of weeks and you've made things a lot clearer for me.

Thank you so much for this information! Do you or anyone here watching have experience with failed copper IUD and/or Paraguard insertions? Or being told your cervix is not dilated or large enough to insert it since its a larger IUD compared to hormonal IUDs? My provider tried to insert the copper IUD (Paraguard) twice (second time with 100 mcg misopristol) and they said I was not dilated enough and my cervix opening is too small since I've never given birth. Wondering if this is legit or if I should see another provider...?
Update: I saw a different provider who seemed to have more experience with IUD insertions for those who have never given birth vaginally. She was able to insert it no problem. So, lesson learned: always get a second opinion and do your research when it comes to your birth control options.

Your welcome Emily! Unfortunately this does happen sometimes and is a legit scenario. In my experience, doing the insertion on day 1 or 2 of your period can help immensely as your cervix naturally opens up slightly. Sometimes seeing another provider can be helpful too.

I’ve been having large blood clots with heavy bleeding and I’m on my period everyday with abt a one day break, but I’m taking the progesterone IUD. I’ve been taking it for almost 6 months. Do you know why that is?

Hi Jamia, the progesterone IUD should not be causing this after 6 months. It's definitely best to schedule an appointment with your provider to check for proper IUD placement. Sometimes if the IUD is lowering down from the uterus these symptoms can occur.

Can you take the mini pill while having the copper iud?

Hi Tierra! Yes you could but this would be something that would need to be discussed with your provider of how long you'd do this for.
