A "slight pinch" he says. I've had three fillings so far where it felt more like a "slight pinch" followed by my entire face getting struck by lightning.
The only concern about mercury in Amalgam (but not big though) is related to the process of Amalgam removal. While dentist is removing the filling there is releasing of mercury steams (due to heating and drilling into Amalgam) that are somewhat toxic but the concentration of toxic substantions (gases) are not that high anyway to cause health alteration.

I just got my filling today and it hurts now bc the numbing wore off and I have to get a root canal friday and several other fillings at almost 17yrs old
I hope it went well! Getting a root canal is never fun. I just had to get my 2nd root canal a few days back on a tooth that had an almost 20-year old filling. It reminded me of just how annoying it was to have to take small bites so that I am not chewing with the new root canal.
It depends on the type of formulation the doctor will choose, but the standard, Lidocaine with 1:100000 adrenalne will keep the area numb for about 4 hours. If he works on upper teeth, particularly in the posterior area (the molars), you won't really notice it take affect; it's felt very locally. It's a bit different for most upper teeth in the anterior area or the lower teeth, because the anesthesia usually affects the tooth\teeth in question, as well as areas unrelated to it\them.

Of course, if prognosis is guarded, the dentist should ask you what do you want to achieve from your treatment. A conservative approch, that would usually cost less is an option, if the clinical situation allows it. If prognosis is poor, root canal treatment might be more appropriate. And also, don't forget that most teeth that go through root canal treatment are inevitably weakend by said treatment and by the damage caused by bacteria, and a crown is required as well - a significant price jump.
The pain he talks about can be caused by several things. Most importantly, it can be caused by the chronic irritation that the pulp had to endure from the bacteria that made you see a dentist to begin with. It's hard to judge how the pulp will react to the treatment, and you need to "give it time" and see if things are ok. Usually we're talking about a 3 months period. Treating deep cavities sounds mondain, but it quite complex, and never certain, but trying to save a tooth is a noble goal.

I had some cavities on my teeth, but a dentist fill them up.
Wouldn't it be better to have the patient bite down on the soft amalgam before hardening it with the light? This would allow for the filling to obtain the indentations of the upper tooth so that discomfort will be reduced (Just my opinion, because there could be a reason to not do that)
Wouldn't that mean you would have the top and the bottom teeth stuck together, as you would have asked the patient to close their mouth before it was completely dry. That would be a bit awkward and not easy to fix. You might have to book them in for a follow up appointment where they drill them apart and start again,
Have it replaced as soon as possible. The part of the tooth that held the filling catchs food easily and at the same time it's harder to keep clean. It also leaves the tooth weakend. It's heart breaking to see patients that say their filling fell off, or broke off weeks or months before they decided to do something about it, and the tooth is completely decayed and soft. Don't relay on pain, having any or not at all. I'd recommend to take care of it quickly.
